The following article has been sent in by Mark Medler of Allison Street. A little piece of Marsham history.
On a cold, wintry morning with a weak sun fighting a losing battle, a piece of history was recreated in Marsham.Sunday February 28th 2016 was the 40th anniversary of the death of one of Marsham’s old characters, Charlie"Peace" Medler born in 1900. He farmed a large piece of the allotment in the village growing potatoes, springcabbage, wallflowers and "The Norfolk Apple" the turnip, which his grandson Mark still eats raw today after
being given them by him many years ago at the age of 8. Chickens and rabbits took up some of the land too.Last year Mark acquired a 1941 British Anzani Iron Horse, the only working model he could find in the UK, in
memory of his grandad Charlie who used one on his land until he was well into his seventies.
So it was on this Sunday morning that Charlies daughter Sylvia Long of Le Neve Road, grandchildren MartyLong, Maureen Glenn and Mark Medler and great grandchildren, Billy, John and George Medler and great greatgrandchildren, Callum, Liam and Rosabella recreated this moment along with a toast of Rum, Charlie’s favouritetipple. The plan was to plough an area that was used by Charlie. Mark and his sons as well as cousin Marty took
turns to try and use the iron horse but found it to be very difficult and hard work and marvelled that a man in hisseventies was able to use one without difficulty. They were certainly made of sterner stuff in them days!! Themorning brought back fond memories of those who remembered Charlie "Peace" MedlerA special thanks to Duddy Gladden for transporting the Iron Horse to the allotmentsand also to Graham Payne for allowing us to use the land.

Marsham WI
John Etheridge was the speaker at our February meeting. He is a self taught artist who holdsworkshops at various locations around Norfolk and is often on Mustard TV. On this occasion John
demonstrated his use of pastels and brought along a collection of his work. Amongst the events for
April are a Speakers Audition Day at Swaffham, Celebrating Shakespeare at Bowthorpe and an
Introduction to Bridge at Federation Office in Norwich. Our April meeting will be on 27th at 7.30pm
in the Village Hall when Margaret Sims will talk to us “All About Hats”.
I was recently speaking to a woman in Marsham about WI who said she was interested but busy at the
moment and we laughed when she said she might join when she was a bit older! I thought I would
take this opportunity to point out that you don’t have to be “old” to become a member, most of us have
been members since we were quite young! We welcome new members of any age and hope that
Marsham WI can continue for many years to come – after all, local women have been attending
meetings in our village hall since 1919. We appreciate that people have busy lives but being a member
does not necessarily take up much time, we meet once a month at 7.30pm, have a nice evening and are
home again around 9.30pm, although there are opportunities to become more involved if you wish. If
you are a woman interested in joining us please come along and give us a try, you will be very
welcome. If you would like any further information or need transport to attend our meetings you can
contact me on 01263 732606 or at [email protected].
