Bottle Banks in Old Norwich Road Apologies to Mike Stephenson of Old Norwich Road for not attributing him with last months letter about the bottle banks. Incidentally it has been much tidier the last few weeks but the challenge will come as the banks fill up.

    Walter John Clutterbuck

Having seen a couple of photographs published in the EDP recently I was prompted to look on-line for more information. The final photo of the series was entitled Our Marsham Forge taken by Walter John Clutterbuck (1853-1937) of Marsham Hall in 1922, and part of the Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre which unfortunately closed in February.

I quote: Walter Clutterbuck came from a wealthy Wiltshire family but spent much of his life (when not travelling) in Norfolk, first at Northrepps Cottage, then Marsham Hall. As a young man he was a supervisor in a Ceylon tea plantation for a time but ultimately had no need to work. His main passions seem to have been travel and photography and which he successfully combined. He published four travel books and at the age of 39 married an artist Violet Smith who had connections locally. Walter Clutterbuck was an accomplished photographer

The Norfolk Heritage Centre holds the main body of his photographic work: 35 albums and 48 exhibition prints. The albums are a record of home life and travels including visits to Norway, Brittany, Tenerife, St Tropez, Japan, Dalmatia, Belgium and India.

He exhibited his photographs at the Royal Photographic Society in 1911. Some of his photographs can be viewed on the Norfolk Heritage Centre web site.

I couldnt find out much about Violet, but she seems to have been a successful artist. Was she the Mrs Clutterbuck who was founding member in 1919 and for many years President of Marsham WI, I wonder? Perhaps there are still Marsham residents who already knew about this Marsham couple and their work.

In March two of our members enjoyed a day at the Norfolk Federation AGM held in St Andrews Hall in Norwich. As reported in the EDP this meeting was attended by more than 700 people from 150 institutes

around the county. Speakers included Greg Smith, the Chief executive of the Royal Norfolk Agricultural

Association, and Katie Soden of Priscilla Bacon Lodge.

The speaker for our March meeting here in the village hall was Neil Storey, who came to talk to us about

The Great War and we were joined by a few of our partners and some visitors from The British Legion.

Neil showed slides of young Norfolk men in uniform preparing to go off to serve their country. The three

    sons of the 3rd

Earl of Leicester went as well as all the male staff from the Holkham Estate, and the Countess

of Leicester became involved with the work of Red Cross nurses. Regiments were formed by many Norfolk

Estates and employers such as Colonel Barclay at Hanworth, the Sandringham Estate and Colmans of Norwich to mention just a few.

Our competition for March was to bring along a medal or badge of any sort, and we had quite a nice

selection. Our Group meeting this year is to be held at Reepham Town Hall on 9th

    May and the speaker on

this occasion is an anaesthetist from the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital with a talk entitled Its a Gas that promises to be amusing! The next craft project will be an entry for the Royal Norfolk Show, the theme being Norfolk in a Basket and hopefully we can come up with some good ideas for that.

Our May meeting is on 28th

when we will be reading through the Resolutions and deciding which one

Marsham will vote for at the WI National Annual Meeting in June. New or returning members are very

welcome to come along and join our meetings, transport need not be a problem as we could arrange for you

to be picked up if you need to be call me on 01263 732606 or email at [email protected]. Meetings are usually held on the 4

th Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.
