BY R O S E M A R Y

For the pas t three years makeup exper t s have been teaching women to sof ten, flat-t e a and blur eyebrows. Now t h e y - a r e camouflaging them a l toge ther wi th the no-brow look. The exper t s a re c laiming t h a t because of the emphas is on "b ig eyes," brows instead of f r a m i n g the eye and punc-t u a t i n g the face de t rac t f rom it. The way to the no-brow look is by looking to the hai r -d resse r or a change in make-up.

Hair can he cut right over the eyes in a special no-brow cut. Or just the shadow of a brow can be achieved by blanching or running the broiv into the eyelid. Bleached eye-brows leave most girls with reddish brows which can then be toned down with smokey eyebrow pencil or cake, dabbed or brushed on sparingly. For those who prefer not to use bleach, brows can be deem-phasized by brushing whitener on the upper eye lid, above the liner and brown or gray shad-owed Lids. The result—the ulti-mate in the wide-eyed look.

Yule Cards Create New U.S. Industry

A new indus t ry was born when the first regular ly pub-lished Amer ican Chr i s tmas cards were introduced in 1875 by Louis P rang , the g rand-f a t h e r of all American greet-ing cards .

Th i r ty - two years ear l ier , John Calcott Horsley, R. A., pa in te r and i l lus t ra tor de-signed the first known Chris t -mas cards fo r h is f r i e n d S i r H e n r y Cole, the i naugu ra to r and first d i rector of the Vic-tor ia and Alber t Museum in London, England.

W h i l e no a u t h e n t i c a t e d " f i r s t " American Chr i s tmas card has been discovered, some h i s to r ians believe t ha t R. H. Peace , a l i t h o g r a p h e r of Albany, New York may have pioneered the first American Yuletide g ree t ing which he l i thographed about 1845. The card included a "commercia l" by extending a " M e r r y Chr is t -mas and a Happy New Y e a r " f rom "Peace ' s Grea t Var ie ty S t o r e —in T h e T e m p l e of Fancy."

P rang , a skilled p r i n t e r f r o m Germany, a r r ived in Boston in 1850 and opened a small litho-g raph ing shop where he spe-cialized in de l ica te ly - t in ted flower p r in t s .

By 1870, he w a s well estab-lished in Roxbury, Mass., where h is reproduct ions of oil pa in t ings were so finely exe-cuted t ha t he enjoyed a sizable business in England in com-pet i t ion wi th leading pub-l ishers there .

A woman employee in his London office suggested t ha t he p r in t "Mer ry C h r i s t m a s " on some of his floral p r in t s . By 1874, he had developed a good Br i t i sh Chris tmas card t r ade , and hence felt encouraged to offer his cards to the A m e r i -can public in 1875.

for every degree above normal on any day in the fal l , sa les will drop off one per cent. And with every one-tenth inch of rain that fa l l s between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on any day sa les are inevitably depressed by one per cent.

Women who a re a lways on the lookout f o r a new piece of f u r n i t u r e t ha t is inexpensive, d i f fe ren t and will lend dis t inc-tion to a room may have a find in paper cha i r s now on the marke t . The chair , made of polyethylene-coated laminated fiber, weighs less than two pounds, costs only six dollars and will suppor t child or adul t . I t s inventor , a young Eng-lish des igner named P e t e r Murdoch, is now work ing on addi t ional styles for cha i r s and a line of paper tables, in ant ic-ipat ion of the day when all f u r n i t u r e can be disposable.
