Our vers ion o f events begins at 1900 hrs o nthe evening o f 5

November 1990 with reports at Rheindahlen o fa sonic boom. We

that at tha t t i m e tw o of our Phantom aircraft were

conf i rmedthat, at tha t t i m e tw o our Phantom aircraft

carrying out practice intercepts ata very high l eve l over Germany,

under positive radar control and did not fl y supersonic.

simultaneously, t he crew of one o f the Phantom aircraft reporteda

UFO sighting, descr ibed as a l a rge formation o f aircrafta l l in

reheat in finger formation ( s imi l a rto that seen i n the Batt le of

Britain f i lms ) disappearingto the north. The c rews gave chase,

but did not establish further visual or radar contact. Separately,

one o f our Tornado aircraft returning at high level fromt he United

Kingdom saw an array of red lights in the sky and, similarly,

invest igated to no avail. subsequently, the NATO Air Defence

organizat ion reported that there were several unident i f ied high

speed contacts during the course of that evening inthe

same area(western border of Germany /Sou the rn Belg ium) as

the sight ings.
