    THE PROGRAM

The collegiate chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at theUniversity of Illinois aims to provide its members with numerous educational, professional, and social activities and opportunities related to vehicular design. Aspart of this initiative, UIUC SAE fields two engineering design teams: Formula SAE

and Baja SAE. Both teams design, construct, and race vehicles against manycollege-level teams from all over the world. Participation in either of these teamsaffords students the opportunity to gain real-world engineering, communication, and leadership skills that are otherwise not necessarily available in an academicsetting. Furthermore, engineering students have the chance to apply the theoryhey learn in the classroom, leading to a better understanding of their engineering

discipline overall. Upon the completion of their degree, SAE graduates are amonghe most highly sought-after candidates for engineering jobs due to their

enthusiasm for the field and their experience with the application ofengineering theory.

What its all about...The Challenge: A fictional manufacturing company has enlisted

he services of a design team to develop a small formula-styleacing car, targeted to the nonprofessional weekend autocross

nthusiast. Based on a strict set of templates and rules, they mustesign the fastest, most effective racing machine possible whileeeping costs minimal, maximizing reliability, and utilizing theatest technologies in racing today. Formula SAE students havehe opportunity to become this design team, using the skillsearned in the classroom to execute this companys vision. Each

ear, competitions are held in various places all over the worldCalifornia, Michigan, Australia, Brazil, Italy, United Kingdom, etc.)

where these design teams are able to bring their car and competegainst some of the best engineering students from across thelanet. At each event, cars are judged based on their performance

n a rigorous set of tests which include acceleration, braking, kidpad, autocross, and endurance runs. However, the cars areot the only element being judged; teams are judged by a groupf industry experts on their performance in static events which

    nclude:

A cost report highlighting the estimated cost to set up abusiness to annually produce 1000 examples of theirvehicle and a business plan to make such aventure profitable

A design report which explains the philosophy andtechnicalities of the design choices made in developingthe car

A sales presentation where the team must attempt tomarket their car to a panel of prospective buyers

Such a diverse set of grading criteria demonstrate how FormulaSAE competitions foster multiple disciplines amongst itsarticipants; engineers must learn not just how to create effective

esigns, but also how to defend their designs and eventually sellhem to a very discerning public.

    DESIGN FOR SUCCESS

or our 2010 entry (dubbed the I10), our teamesigned an evolution of our 2009 car, retaining itsest elements and incorporating several improve-

ments to maximize performance. Most noticeably, wepted to use carbon fiber bodywork for the shell of

ur car, the first time our team had done so in severalears. In addition, an aerodynamics package con-isting of a diffuser and wings was designed to maxi-

mize cornering ability, another first for our team.hese ambitious changes proved to be very benefi-ial; our first competition at Michigan International

Speedway (widely considered to be the world cham-ionship event ofhe series) yielded13th place finishut of 120 com-

etitors. We alsoad an exception-lly strong show-

ng at our secondompetition at the

Auto Club Speed-way in California, taying near theop of the fieldntil the last dayf competition

when an unfortu-ate chain failurerevented our carrom finishing thendurance com-etition. Nevertheless, we managed to finish 15th outf a field of 56 competitors, bolstered by the highcores received in the prior events. Going into the011 season, we are greatly looking forward tourther evolving our design. Most importantly, weave opted to place a heavy emphasis on simulationnd modeling to help us further refine our package

nd extract its full potential. Here are some shortlurbs from our team leaders about what their goalsre for the 2011 contender:

Engineed by Dale Sormaz & Prashant Jayaraman)

Simulation will be our main focus of this season, sub-

jecting our Honda F4i engine and its intake systo extensive modeling within the GT-Power engsimulation suite and CFD software, respectivBoth will allow us to refine our operation pareters and geometries to achieve better

economy and a better-balanced powerbDevelopment of a variable intake geomsystem is also in the works. All models wiltested and validated through dynamometer ting. Integration with the electronics teamanother key goal as we plan on researching fully exploiting the capabilities of our new Mo

    M400 ECU.

    Suspension(led by Joe Korte

Brad Knicker)With an already hicompetitive suspensystem, our goals2011 are to improvecars aerodynamic igration and increthe cars roll stiffnand wheelbase walso reducing weightentative two-increase in wheelbwill maximize stabat higher speeds allow for a more eftive underbody diffu

and encourage further drivetrain developmentfurther reduce weight, we are redesigning our bcranks to use less material and are investigathe use of carbon fiber A-arms. All this work widone alongside our standard work of reanalyour prior work with bearings, wheel choices, upright designs, all in the effort to shed weight

    improve handling.

Chassis/Integration(led by Damian Kucbor & Arron Calvache)We are looking to further strengthen our chathrough the use of structural carbon fiberpanels while also targeting a 5 pound

eduction in weight. The wheelbase of our car will beengthened to improve handling and balance. Also,we plan on laser cutting our chassis tubes tomprove fit and finish while also allowing for moreccurate load path geometry.

    Drivetrained by Henry Africano)

This years drivetrain will be focused on reducingrag throughout the entire driveline. By usingpgraded bearings that are repositioned to mini-

mize energy losses, more power can be transferredrom the engine to the ground. Integrating the hubsnto the spindles willroduce a more favor-ble half-shaft angle,

urther reducing drag-nduced losses. Thiswill improve ourehicles reliability byimplifying and lighten-ng the system as awhole. Further changesnclude changes to ourraking system; a newrake pedal orientation

will be determined tollow for adjustableedals and bettereometry, resulting in

more solid braking andmproved driver ergo-omics.

Electronicsed by Eric Lui & Jack Sormaz)

One of our major projects for this year is to developwireless telemetry system for real-time monitoringf vehicle data during races. In addition, we are

ooking to reduce the size of our electrical compo-ents and improve their encapsulation and mount-

ng so they can better withstand race conditions.

Aerodynamics(led by Jillian Roettiger)The 2011 aerodynamics package will build on lyears design, focusing on an iterative CFD simution in 3 dimensions, specifically with respect to en

plate design and wing placement. Fabrication will pcraftsmanship and weight savings in the forefrothrough the use of female molds and high strengcomposite materials.

By fulfilling these design goals, we are certain thour program will maintain the high level of succethat it has experienced over the past few years a

that our car wonce again betop performer

the internatiostage. We expthat come May2011, this car wbe competing overall victory both the Michigand Califorevents. At tsame time, have also begto set up tframework for potential re-design of tcar for future se

sons. This would include the possibility of switchfrom our current steel-tube chassis to a carbon fibmonocoque, as well as transitioning to a smaengine. Because such changes would requiregreat deal of flexibility from all the other vehicle stems, a 2 to 3 year plan has been laid out whecurrent sophomores and juniors would be respo

sible for the primary design and development of tfuture car with assistance from the seniors. Wbelieve that by taking this amount of time to refiand test our ideas, a completely redesigned cdebuting in 2012 or 2013 could be highly competitwithin its first year of competition.

Almost all Formula SAE teams, including our own, rely heavily on corporate partnerships andsponsorships to maintain their operation. Despitehe fact that our vehicle has consistently been a top

performer amongst cars built on substantiallyhigher budgets, the cost of remaining competitive isalways increasing. A breakdown of ourprojected budget for this year is provided below:

n most years, around 40% of our total budget hasbeen provided by the Engineering Design Council,an umbrella organization that oversees all studentdesign projects. This year, however, we haveearned that financial constraints have greatlyimited their capacity to help us; recent estimates

rom university faculty estimate that their financialbacking of our team in particular will most likely

drop to under 50% of their previous support levels. Thus, more than ever, we will need your help inmaking our car a reality. By becoming a sponsor ofhe University of Illinois Formula SAE team, you will

    WHY SUPPORT SAE?

be supporting a program with a proven track rec(pun definitely intended) of producing some of finest engineers in industry today. As mentionearlier, participation on a Formula SAE team givstudents the chance to apply lessons from

classroom and experience real-world engineerprojects. Furthermore, participants pick up valualeadership skills which are rarely developed in otcollegiate organizations. There truly is no otengineering extracurricular organization tprepares engineering students for industry Formula SAE. In addition, your support of our tecan deliver excellent return on investment. Becau

we bring our car to competitions around the counattended by schools from many parts of the wo

your company would have the opportunity experience global exposure to a well-reputed groof engineering professionals and academics, moswhom are involved with state-of-the-art engineerfirms and projects. On a much more intimate levwe routinely have sponsors visit our team eitheour shop in Urbana or at any of our competitio

Visiting sponsors not only get to witness the desand construction of our car, but they also have chance to speak to our engineers about thcompany. This allows our corporate partners

develop a one-on-one relationship with engineers, thus making for a much more effectiverecruiting experience.
