FormulaSAEisanintercollegiatecompetitionwherestudentsarechallengedtomarket,design,manufacture,andcompeteinformula‐styleracecars.Thisrequiresacollaborativeteameffortforaperiodofoneyearwheretheywillthencompetewithapproximately120universitiesfromaroundtheworldincludingGermany,Japan,andIndia.Thecarsarerequiredtobebuiltwithintherules,guidelinesandregulationsprovidedbySAE.Atthestartofthecompetitioneachvehiclewillundergorigoroussafetyandtechnicalinspectionstoverifycompliancetotherules.Onlyafterthevehiclepassesallinitialinspections,willitbeeligibleforjudgingandscoringinthestaticanddynamicevents.

BajaSAE®BajaSAEprovidesaspecialsortofchallenge:thedesignofaruggedyetlightweightoff‐roadvehicle.Thegoalsforthisyear’sbrandnewvehicleincludearobustandefficientdrivelinewithacustomgearbox,acarefullyengineeredchassis,andall‐terrainsuspension.Witha4‐hourendurance,anythingcanhappeninBaja.Thevehiclemustbedesignedtowithstandrocks,jumps,collisions,logs,steepinclines,mudandshallowwaterinanyorallcombinationsandinanytypeofweatherincludingrain,snowandice.

Formula‐Hybridisanintercollegiatecompetitionaimedatdrivinginnovationinthegreenvehicleindustry.RulesandguidelinesaresimilartothoseofFormulaSAE,withtheaddedcomplexityofrequiringahybriddrivetrainsystem.TeamsfromaroundtheworldcometogethereachMayatDartmouthCollegetoshowcasetheirinnovativedesignsintheelectricandhybridvehiclemarkets.HereatSanJoséStateUniversitywehavehighhopesforthe2010Formula‐Hybridcompetition.Ourdesignutilizesanindependentreardrivetrainwitheachrearwheelbeingpoweredbyitsownelectricmotor.Wewillconducton‐boardbatterychargingthroughasmallinternalcombustionenginecoupledwithagenerator.Weplantoincorporatecutting‐edgegreentechnologysuchasadvancedBatteryManagementSystem,regenerativebraking,andadvancedmotorcontrols.
