Welcome to Sydney Adventist HospitalWe are proud to hold the first ever HealthMoot at the Clinical Education Centre, Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga, Sydney.

The Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH), known as ‘The San’, is an acute-care private hospital with 441 licensed overnight beds and is the largest single campus not for profit private hospital in NSW. Each year more than 2,200 staff and 750 accredited medical practitioners care for over 50,000 inpatients and 175,000 outpatients, including approximately 2,000 babies delivered and 20,000 cases presenting to Emergency Care. Opening in the leafy suburb of Wahroonga in 1903, Sydney Adventist Hospital has a long and reputable history of caring for patients for nearly 110 years.

In 2010 San Education transitioned to Moodle, and created an eLearning platform which enabled Hospital Educators to add the digital environment to their training programs. This move forged the way to a new state-of-the-art Moodle upgrade which was released in 2013, with significant uptake by staff.

Clinical educators are developing training solutions tailor-made for the busy clinical environment. Using scenario-based best practice online training packages staff are exposed to critical theory and clinical skills prior to caring for patients in the clinical setting. . This innovative outlook is bringing together the best of eLearning throughskills workshops, clinical simulation labs and clinical skill assessments, to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Clinical Education Centre The Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School (SAHCS) is housed in the Clinical Education Centre. It is the first Clinical School of The University of Sydney to be based in the private sector. The Sydney Adventist Hospital in Wahroonga (known as the ‘San’) has been an associate teaching hospital of the University since 1994 and now provides outstanding training across all stages of the Sydney Medical School program. Uniquely, multidisciplinary teaching opportunities are provided by academics, hospital specialists, nursing, allied health professionals and practitioners within the private sector, in conjunction with outpatient clinical and community settings.

The first ever Health MoodleMoot in Australia, is proudly being co-presented by Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH), and Pukunui Technology.

Our focus has not been on high numbers, but instead on providing a quality program and opportunities for the Moodle and health community to connect and interact. Moreover, this is an opportunity to celebrate the emerging approaches, trends and innovative improvements in healthcare education.

Moodle LMSMoodle is a software package for producing internet-based courses and web sites. It’s an ongoing development project designed to support a social constructionist framework of education. The project is currently directed by its founder, Martin Dougiamas.

The design and development of Moodle is guided by a particular philosophy of learning, a way of thinking that you may see referred to in shorthand as a “social constructionist pedagogy”.

Moodle is provided freely as Open Source software (under the GNU Public License). Basically this means Moodle is copyrighted, but that you can edit and customise the software to suit your needs. Due to this, Moodle has an active online community of developers who are constantly adding to the application the needs put forward by todays teachers.

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It’s also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.

Keynote SpeakersMartin Dougiamas Martin is best known as the founder of the Moodle, the popular free course management system used by millions of teachers around the world. As the Executive Director of Moodle Pty Ltd in Perth, Western Australia, he leads the team of software developers at the heart of the Moodle project and the global community of 54 Moodle Partner service companies that help provide funding for this independent open source software project.

Martin has a mixed academic background with post-graduate degrees in Computer Science and Education. He continues to focus on researching how educators approach internet-based education. His major goal for the future is to improve the quality of education by encouraging social constructions and collaborative practices within online learning communities. Dr. Glenn Singleman M.B.,B.S. Sydney University

Dr. Singleman is Australia’s most experienced expedition Doctor. He has been on countless expeditions to remote parts of the world including Antarctica, Mt Everest, the Karakorum Himalaya in Pakistan, the Garhwal Himalaya in India, and on a number of deep ocean explorations, including the Deep Sea Challenge expedition in 2012 to the Mariana Trench, with Hollywood Director James Cameron. Here in Australia Dr. Singleman is medical director for many ultra sporting events including ‘The North Face 100’ and the ‘Big Red Run’ in the Simpson Desert. Dr. Singleman also holds a number of world records in Extreme Sport. He has post graduate qualifications in Communications, Underwater Medicine and Remote and Rural Medicine. He has been working at the San for over ten years both in Emergency and Intensive Care.

Session Outline - Extreme Medicine Dr. Singleman will share his experiences caring for the medical health of teams on remote expeditions, together with his processes of critical care management, leadership and peak performance.

At the end of this workshop, participants will have a clear understanding of how to plan and deliver a successful blended delivery training strategy that promotes exploration, simulation, sharing and collaboration in healthcare education.

Gina Veliotis BSc (USYD), GradDip IT (UWS), GradDip Ed (CSU) eLearning Co-ordinator, San EducationGina is a passionate expert in eLearning, particularly in the area of implementing large-scale learning platforms. In the last 19 years, Gina has worked in the VET and healthcare sector, meeting the diverse challenges of adult education, training and mentoring educators to use innovation in adult education.In her current role at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, Gina has implemented a state-of-the-art solution, reshaping learning to support the hospital’s compliance and performance requirements. Sarah Lockton Clinical Nurse Educator, Orthopaedic Ward, San EducationSarah has extensive experience in the acute care environment with a focus on orthopaedic and surgical nursing. She has a special interest in clinical teaching and works in a variety of contexts within San Education including as an RTO Trainer and Assessor. Sarah is currently studying a Master of Nursing (Education) and plans to further her knowledge in Health Research and teaching within the tertiary sector. In her spare time she enjoys training horses and volunteers her time to foster care and rehome cats from death row pounds across Sydney.

Kari Small Clinical Nurse Educator, Emergency Care, San EducationKari has been working as CNE & Clinical Nurse Specialist in the emergency department at SAH for the past 10 years. She has extensive adult and paediatric critical care experience gained through working in a busy emergency departments and PICU in Sydney, Canberra & London. Her addiction to travel was partially satiated during the several years spent doing international air ambulance and repatriations while based in Europe. She has completed post graduate certificates in Emergency and Paediatric Nursing, TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment through San College of Education and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Health Law at Sydney University.

Linley Shields Nurse Educator Intensive Care unit/Cardiac Care unit, San EducationLinley is detail oriented, efficient and an organized professional with extensive experience in critical care nursing. Linley started exploring the effective use of simulation after commencing the role of Nurse Educator in 2008. She completed the National Health Education and Training in Simulation Program (NHET) in 2013, and a Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing at the College of Nursing. Linley co-convenes adult advanced life support training, utilising simulation scenarios on a weekly basis. She is passionate facilitating learners with authentic real life experiences that promote reflection and personal professional growth. Linley will share personal experiences with simulation training including, the problems and benefits within the hospital environment.

Elizabeth ReidNurse Educator, Butler Cardiothoracic Ward, San EducationLibby is a Nurse Educator and adult basic life support coordinator. She has extensive experience in coronary care and cardiothoracic teaching and nursing. Libby has a Critical Care Certificate-Cardiac Major (Alfred/Epworth and associated hospitals), Bachelor of Business- Management (Monash University) and a Masters of Learning and Development (Adult, Professional and Workplace Learning) from the University of Southern Queensland, where she received the Dean’s Commendation for Outstanding Achievement. Libby completed the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment through San College of Education. Day 2 – Abstracts

Evidence-Based Selection of Activity Types for Health Professionals The presentation on scenario-driven eLearning in the healthcare sector, is based on a case study about a ‘virtual clinic’ that Nine Lanterns designed for Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS). We share how (and why) we used interactive scenario videos (that were filmed at the Royal Children’s Hospital using real health professionals) to explore situations involving the life support of paediatric patients.The benefits of the instructional design model will be explained and we’ll explore why it is relevant for health care providers who use a blended learning approach.

Moving From a Paper-Based Portfolio to a Moodle-Based Portfolio Using Only Core Moodle ModulesThis presentation will explore how the ANU Medical School moved from a paper-based Portfolio in 2013 to a Moodle-based portfolio in 2014, using only core Moodle modules. Hear about the lessons learned, the key considerations for such a move and where we go from here.While the rest of the ANU has been using Moodle (aka Wattle) for some years, the Medical School is relatively new to Moodle, launching our Moodle site in 2013. Initial attempts to move the Year 4 Portfolio to Moodle in 2013, using only the Assignment module, met with limited success. The lessons learned were applied and in 2014 the entire Phase 2 portfolio and Clinical Skills Logbook moved to Moodle and utilise a variety of Moodle modules (Book, Assignment, Database, Forum, Choice, Glossary, Feedback and Quiz).

Kate Casey Senior Instructional Designer , Nine LanternsKate Casey is the lead Instructional Designer at Nine Lanterns. She is completing a Masters in online and distance education and is currently (enthusiastically) completing several MOOCs. She has extensive experience in the creation of interactive resources for online and blended learning for adults. Her experience includes storyboarding, collaborative content development, scripting for film and for interactive objects, development of animated simulations and character-based simulations, voice over scripting, editorial quality assurance and development of interactive games. She has a particular interest in collaborative partnerships and in developing content for the health sector. Her work at Nine Lanterns has resulted in them winning several health projects.

Scott Wallace Instructional Designer , Nine Lanterns Scott Wallace is an instructional designer with over 10 years’ experience. He has created online education material for clients such as RMIT University, Mercedes Benz, Vodafone, Melbourne Museum, Lingo Media (Canada), The People’s Education Press (China) and Aeon (Japan). In addition to working for online learning frontrunners Nine Lanterns, Scott is currently undertaking a Master of Education at the University of Melbourne with Digital Technologies in Education as his focus area.

Development of a Blended Learning Paediatric Advanced Life Support Program (PALS)Looking to integrate a traditional ALS program into an engaging program that utilised a blended learning approach, a combination of eLearning material written with Articulate software and simulation training delivered in a combination simulation environment using low and high fidelity mannequins. The success of the program has resulted in the roll out of a blended learning approach to Clinical mandatory training, adult ALS, Recognition of the deteriorating patient, and child safety. We found that blended learning delivers an engaging program that is financially sustainable, flexible and provides a platform for continuous skill and knowledge retention. Problems such as lack of an organisational learning management system were overcome with some out of the box strategies.

Lyndall Thorn Clinical Skills Manager, Medical School |Canberra hospital Campus, College of Medicine, Biology & Environment, Australian National universityLyndall Thorn started at the ANU Medical School as the Clinical Skills Manager in 2010. She started working with Wattle when the Medical School moved over from Medonline.Prior to working for the ANU Lyndall worked as a Theatre nurse at the Liverpool Hospital and in a number of different clinical and management roles at the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. Lyndall has a Bachelor of Nursing from USW Macarthur, a Graduate Certificate in Orthopaedic Nursing from the NSW College of Nursing (now the Australian College of Nursing) and a Masters Degree in Health Sciences (Nursing) form Charles Sturt University.

Susan helmrich Clinical Nurse Educator, The Wesley hospitalSusan Helmrich works has a Clinical Educator at The Wesley Hospital. She has a background in intensive care nursing and resuscitation education. Sarah Arnold Clinical Nurse Educator, The Wesley hospital Sarah Arnold works as a Clinical Nurse Educator in the Emergency Department at The Wesley Hospital. Sarah has had extensive experience as an ED nurse in Australian, New Zealand and London. Healthy Blended Delivery – San Education Nurse Re-Entry Program The challenges of delivering education in healthcare are complex and diverse. In 2010, National changes to the requirements of registered nurses to maintain their registration and their ability to practice their profession, challenged education providers to develop a training and assessment program that met both, the needs of the individual nurse, and the stringent accreditation requirements of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. The blended use of didactic presentation, simulation and eLearning was chosen to provide a broad knowledge foundation in students of various learning backgrounds and skill level. This presentation is our story.

fiona Blades Nurse Educator, The Sydney Adventist hospitalFiona Blades has been involved with the Sydney Adventist Hospital’s education department as a clinical nurse educator and nurse educator since 1992. Her background is in oncology, and in particular, the care of palliative patients within the acute health setting. Fiona joined the hospital’s registered training organisation – San College of Education in 2008. The delivery of the Certificate IV in training and assessment and a partnership with Northern Sydney Institute Tafe (Meadowbank) to provide the clinical component of the Diploma of Nursing, introduced her to the benefits of collaborative relationships with public and private health entities.In 2013, San College of Education and Sydney Adventist Hospital was accredited to provide a nationally approved RN Re-entry program. Fiona received the Bill Leventhal Rotary Award for her work on this project, and is the current co-ordinator of the RN Re-entry program.

SMACC (Social Media and Critical Care) - At first glance, SoMe and Critical Care seems rather an odd combination. Web based critical care education has been gaining momentum over the last 5-6 years, and it is now increasingly powered by SoMe. Out of these websites has arisen a movement coined #FOAMed (Free Open Access Medical education), and from this developed a hugely successful conference. In this talk, Roger will explain the origins of the SMACC Conference and its meteoric rise, including the over 25 million twitter impressions the conference has generated, and its staggering 500,000 podcast downloads. It’s not all good, but you’d better get with the program or you’ll be left behind.

Using Moodle Template Courses To Embed Quality Learning DesignOne of the biggest challenges to health organisations using internal educators and subject matter experts to develop online content is how to incorporate quality learning design principles when there is limited access to trained online instructional designers.In this presentation Phil will provide an overview of a solution that is currently being implemented by THO South in partnership with local eLearning design company SproutLabs. Making the Grade: Combining Grader Report settings to meet organisational needs at ACNWhen designing learning pathways for our online students, it’s easy to overlook the importance of how and when grades information is provided to them.
