British Empire

The British legal system,

language and culture were

widespread over all

dominions, colonies and

other territories. Even after

those countries gained

independence, the impact

of the previous British

domination is still evident to

this day.

If "the empire on which the sun never sets” (1)

is mentioned, the British Empire is being

spoken about – the largest one in human

history.

By 1922 twenty per cent of the world’s

population and one quarter of the total

Earth’s area were ruled and administered by

the United Kingdom.

The British Empire was formed from

the “English overseas possessions”.

In other words – the British Empire

was formed from countries

conquered by force, acquired by

political conspiracy or through

trading transactions with Spain and

France between the 16th and 18th

centuries.

Commonwealth of Nations

The Commonwealth of

Nations is a free

association of 53

independent countries.

As colonies slowly gained their independence, especially after WWII, modern attitudes were required and that

situation started a process of

„decolonization“. The procedure was finalized

by the political transfer of Hong Kong to

China in 1997.

Many of the former British colonies joined with

the newly established British Commonwealth

that was officially brought into being in 1931.

Later, this association was renamed the

Commonwealth of Nations.

Commonwealth of Nationas The Commonwealth ideology is

described in the Singapore Declaration

(1971) and the Harare Declaration

(1991), where all members proclaim to

promote „…democracy, human rights,

good governance, the rule of law,

individual liberty, free trade and world

peace.“ (2)

Compare the differences between the British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations

Can you see any new members?

Can‘t you see any old ones?

Page 10: „EU peníze středním školám“

The Head of the Commonwealth of Nations …

…is Queen Elisabeth II but her role is only symbolic.

She does not have any profit from this office.

She is also a monarch of 16 countries (members of

the Commonwealth) called Commonwealth

Realms. „The other members of the Commonwealth have their own heads of state: 32 members are republics and 5 members are monarchies.“ (3)

Most countries of the Commonwealth of Nations use

English as a first or a second language and it has

an official status except in Cyprus and Malaysia.

Commonwealth Games

There are many

multilateral projects.

Except for political and

financial meetings,

there are

Commonwealth Games,

which take part once in

four years and they are

the third largest sports

event in the world (after

the Olympic games and

Asian Games).

Page 12: „EU peníze středním školám“
