Many of us have had to deal with a lost pet, either because they got away accidentally
or they escaped from a fenced yard. We find ourselves wondering, “What do I do
now?” The first step when dealing with a lost pet is to check with your local humane
societies or animal control agencies. File a lost animal report with them, making sure
to mention any distinguishing marks or identifications. If your pet has a microchip,
call the company to report that the pet is missing.
However, you shouldn’t rely on animal control or the humane society alone. Spend
time walking where the animal was lost, and post notices around the area and in local
papers. Most lost pets don’t wander far and will be found within your neighborhood.
You can take precautions against losing your pet. Always check your fence for weak
spots. Make sure that your pet always wears a collar on with proper and current
identification, and put its collar back on immediately after a bath. Microchips are also
a great and permanent means of identifying a lost pet.
Upcoming Events: Freedom Cycles of Daytona presents the Freedom Ride and Chili
