You are most welcome, we have an open door policy and our food is good.” So said Terance de Jager, owner of Guido’s Restaurant in Uitenhage. His statement fol- lows recent newspaper reports resulting in social media gossiping and an array of e-mails being sent regarding municipal hygiene re- ports done during 2012 at more than 350 food outlets in the Nelson Mandela Bay. “Inspections and hygiene reports are done on a regular basis by both environmental health practitioners from the municipality and our franchise group. This is normal pro- cedure at our kind of business as these re- ports assist us in complying with hygiene and other standards. “We were listed among ‘shocking hygiene violations’ for a report to attend to leaky taps, soap and hand towels at handbasins and to update pest control reports as we had recent- ly moved to our new premises – these matters were attended to promptly after that inspec- tion. “A health department certificate of compli- ance was issued shortly after the sensation seeking article comfirming that we were un- fairly labelled by irresponsible reporting. Another food outlet which received mis- leading bad publicity is Geyer’s Butchery at Despatch. “It was totally inappropriate and unreason- able to publish the reports as in our case it was two minor offences which were rectified almost immediately,” said Fanie Terblanche. The report stated that the sales assistant did not wear her “mobcap” and jackets of two blockmen were lying in a bag on a cupboard in the backroom of the butchery. “The public’s e-mails and comments on Fa- cebook that followed the newspaper report were extremely disturbing and far from the truth.
