The sponsorship was facilitated by the SANParks Honorary Rangers, a group of volunteers who raise funds and provide services in support of South African National Parks (SAN- Parks). The handover, which took place at Addo’s Main Camp, saw equipment such as binoculars, tents and sleeping bags, backpacks and chest webbing handed over to the park rangers. “We are extremely proud and see it as a privilege, through our dona- tion of equipment, to be part of this counter-pouching efforts. We want to thank the honorary rangers for the important role they fulfil at the park,” said Linda Joyce from Unitrans. Norman Johnson, Addo Elephant National Park Manager, said “We can not deal with this poaching threat on our own. We need the partnerships of business, private enterprises, gov- ernment and the honorary rangers. Together we can make a difference. “We really appreciate this dona- tion of much needed equipment and will utilize it to the best.” According to Megan Taplin, mar- keting and communications manag- er at Addo Elephant National Park, the rangers will use the equipment during day and night patrols aimed at preventing potential poachers from entering the park. “The much-needed equipment comes at a time when the country- wide rhino poaching crisis has result- ed in a battle led by various conserva- tion and law enforcement authorities against the poaching syndicates. “Figures issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs last week confirmed a total of 225 rhinos killed illegally since the beginning of 2012. During this same period, 148 suspects have been arrested for crime related to rhino poaching,” said Taplin. The total of rhinos killed during the year has risen to 227 after the kill- ing of two black rhinos during the weekend at the Madikwe Nature Re- serve in North West. Unitrans has also sponsored vari- ous monitoring systems in Addo Ele- phant National Park, including cam- eras, which are placed in the field to detect threats to wildlife in the park. “The sponsorship also covers heli- copter flying time to aid monitoring of the park’s wildlife.” At the handover, some of Addo Ele- phant National Park’s 88 rangers demonstrated their patrolling skills. The sponsorship also covers ad- vanced training for selected rangers over the next few years to ensure they have the most superior abilities to target any threats. According to Taplin the handover forms part of the ongoing national sponsorship agreement between Uni- trans Volkswagen & Audi Division and the SANParks Honorary Rang- ers, which was officially launched in September 2011. For each new and used vehicle retailed at the 13 partici- pating Unitrans dealerships, R500 is donated to assist counter-poaching ef- forts in SA National Parks. Maak seker jy verwyder alle bankstate enskuldbriewe as jy nie uitgevang wil wordwanneer jy ’n vrag vullis in ’n rivier stortnie.

South Africans this week celebrate Child Pro-tection Week and in support of this campaignthe local police in conjunction with UitenhageChild and Family Welfare Society visited vari-ous schools.
As law enforcement officials, police mem-bers have a vital role to play in protecting thevulnerable children of our country.
One of the strategic priorities of the policeis to reduce the levels of crime against womenand children. The theme of this year’s cam-paign is: “Working Together to Protect aChild.”
Members from Uitenhage police and socialauxiliary workers officially kicked off thisspecial week by visiting Innes Primary Schoolin Uitenhage.
W/O Werner Arndt informed Grade 4 - 7learners regarding the different types of drugsand the dangers these drugs can cause. Policemembers also spoke about the possible dan-gers of the usage of the different social net-works – and not to provide personal informa-tion for everyone to read and see.
Members have continued with their visitsto different schools during the week.

There will be a variety of stalls including ted-dy bears, porcelain dolls, antique dolls, DinkyToys, newborn baby dolls and even sought-aftercollectables from the pre-World War era.
The EC Doll & Toy Fair is being held everyfourth year and will attract collectors fromafar. The province was always known for itsexclusive private collections of dolls and toysand Port Elizabeth during the 1960s wasknown as the only place in the county witha “dolls hospital”.
“Although it is a small group of people whoare members of the club, they are very activeand have exquisite collections. It will not allbe at the fair, but those interested in antiquedolls and toys will surely enjoy this fair,” saidSarene Carter, a keen doll collector fromUitenhage.
Also present at the fair will be the Minia-tures Club. The fair will be held from 08:30 to13:30. Refreshments will be on sale.

FROM a very early age we are allintroduced to different shapes, whether it was a triangle, squareor rectangle.
But who would have ever thoughtthat probably the most commonshape of all would cause so much con-fusion – the circle!
Not just any circle, but traffic cir-cles.
The UD News decided to investi-gate this issue and to educate localroad users on how to use circles. Firstreaders should notice that there aretwo kinds of circles.
One is known as a mini-circle andthe other is the roundabout.
Mini circlesAccording to www.walkingin-
fo.org/engineering, the mini-circle is“an intersection improvement aswell as a traffic-calming device andcan take the place of a four-way stopor yield signs”.
The purpose of the mini-circle is tomanage traffic at intersectionswherevolumes do not warrant a stop signor traffic lights.
How to use it:The first vehicle to cross the line
has the right of way – so it reallyworks on the same principle as a
four-way stop or yield sign, exceptyou don’t come to a completestand still, except if another carcrossed the line before you did.
RoundaboutThen there is the roundabout
which is larger than the mini-cir-cle and a type of circular intersec-tion that reduces potential con-flicts between vehicles and im-proves the efficiency of theintersection, according towww.arrivealive.co.za.
How to use it:“Drivers entering a rounda-
bout shall turn to the left and shalltravel round the roundabout in aclockwise direction, and it impos-es a mandatory requirement thatdrivers entering a roundaboutshall yield right-of-way to trafficapproaching from the right,”states www.circles.org.za.
This means that drivers ap-proaching a roundabout mustgive right-of-way to traffic comingfrom the right.
But how does one tell the differ-ence between a mini-circle and aroundabout? Look at the signs. The roundabout’s sign takes theshape of a blue circle indicatingclockwise travelling.
The mini-circle’s sign is an up-side down triangle also indicatingclockwise travelling.
Mini circles vs Roundabouts
Traffic circle confusion

The Memory Factory is geleë bydie ATKV Uitenhage-tak se Feester-rein in Verwoerdrylaan, Vanes
Landgoed.“Hoekom noem ons dit The
Memory Factory?

This week, the Property Poser paneldeals with a rental issue from a readerwhose landlord sent her an SMS in-structing her to vacate his property by
the end of the month. She admits that, since her husband has been
retrenched, they have been in arrears with therental. The couple had offered to repay theamount in instalments or set up a debit order, but received no response.
The reader would like to know whether theycould give their landlord one month’s notice orwhether they should wait for him to obtain acourt order evicting them.
According to Charlotte Vermaak from ChasEveritt in Nelson Mandela Bay, the non-pay-ment of rental means the reader is already inbreach of the lease agreement.
“Depending on the terms of the agreement, the landlord would usually give her notice ofthe breach, affording her an opportunity to rec-tify it.”
Vermaak says if the lease was concluded af-ter April 1 last year and is for a fixed period, the provisions of Section 14 of the ConsumerProtection Act will apply.
“This section only allows a landlord to can-cel a lease once the tenant has been given 20working days’ notice to remedy the breach butfails to comply.”
Failure to pay the arrears or make suitablealternative arrangements would in all likeli-hood result in the landlord cancelling the lease, says Vermaak.
“Whether or not these steps have been takenby the landlord is not made clear by the reader.
She only mentions the text message orderingthem to vacate the premises within 10 days.”
In terms of the provisions of the Preventionof Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupa-tion of Land (Pie) Act, Vermaak says no onemay be evicted from a property without a courtorder.
“A landlord wishing to evict an unlawful oc-cupier has to institute legal action to initiatethe procedure.”
Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in the met-ro says a notice authorised by a magistratemust be served on the unlawful occupier aswell as the municipality, at least 14 workingdays before the eviction hearing. “This givesthe tenant the chance to oppose the action.”
Du Toit says a court hearing will determinewhether the landlord is entitled to an eviction,
taking into account issues such as the rightsand needs of children, the elderly and house-holds headed by women.
“If the court finds that the owner is entitledto an eviction order, it will also assign a dateby which the tenant must vacate the premises. The owner may call in the sheriff to remove theoccupier, should he or she fail to do so.”
In this instance, says Du Toit, it would ap-pear that the landlord might be acting unrea-sonably by not allowing the reader to pay offthe arrear rental in instalments.
“If the reason for the arrears is the retrench-ment issue, and if the reader has offered to set-tle the debt in another manner, then it wouldseem unlikely that a court will grant an evic-tion order.”
Du Toit says the reader may consider con-sulting an attorney to advise her on her rights,or she may use the protective measures in theRental Housing Act should she feel that herrights are being negatively impacted upon.
