This support is greatly appreciated. For the second year running, Wild Horses MCC in Uitenhage was responsible for selling the most raffle tick- ets out of the seven clubs involved in the organising of the Toy Run. Members from Wild Horses MCC managed to sell at least R34 000 worth of tickets at Pick ‘n Pay Pen- ford. Another achievement for Uitenhage residents is that the lucky winners of the first, third and fourth prizes also hail from the town! The first prize, a R21 000 Pick ‘n Pay Hyper voucher was won by Morné Blignault. The second prize, a XR125 Honda motorcycle from Auto Motorcycles, was won by Zane Wall. Third prize, a weekend for two at Woodlands Country Cottages at Kenton-on-Sea was won by Wayne Jansen with Adelle van der Walt winning the fourth prize, a weekend for four at Blanco Holiday & Guest Farm at Tarkastad. The Toy Run children’s party took place on Saturday, 24th November at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. A total of 300 children were entertained and received party packs, lunch and special gifts. In addition to the children’s party, money raised from the Toy Run will be donated to identified charities name- ly Bethel Safe House, Ncedanani Pre-school, Sunshine Pre-school, Victory Kidz and Zama SA. A renewed initiative by concernedUitenhage residents to beautify andtidy up the town with the commongoal to regain its name as the “GardenTown” has already gained a lot of pos-itive scope.“We need to mobilise the residents ofthe town to join this initiative whichis loosely based on the very success-ful ‘Dorp van Drome’ project,” saidUitenhage resident Dave McCleland.A successful meeting was held lastweek with a number of concerned res-idents to discuss the way forwardwith the project “Dorp van Drome” tobe applied in Uitenhage. The guest speakers were formerBrandwag headmaster, Deon Goosenand Alan Wright. They gave an in-sight into the “Dorp van Drome” con-cept.“To all those residents who came toshow their support, it is much appre-ciated! We will keep everyone in-formed of the project as it develops.“To those residents who already aregoing the extra mile to making theirareas, over and above their own gar-dens, more acceptable and beautified, thank you!“To all those not involved - keep youreyes peeled for our sign boards -which will show you the progress as
we restore our town to the ‘GardenTown’ as it is fondly remembered bymost of us,” said McCleland.According to him they will be ap-proaching business entities in the fu-ture to come on board.“So please, keep your doors open, we
will be knocking on them soon. Afterall, it’s in everyone's interest to makethis project work.”Anyone who would like to know moreregarding the Uitenhage, Dorp vanDrome project, please contact DaveMcCleland on 0082 774 5633.

“Daar is duisendpote net waar jykyk.

SPCA offices across the country arebracing themselves as they try tocope with the busiest time of theyear, often and perhaps not unrea-sonably referred to as “the silly sea-son”.“Consequences of festivities in-
clude the number of runaway, lost, injured or missing animals as a re-sult of the irresponsible use of fire-works or owners being away on holi-day and ‘animal-carers’ being lessthan reliable,” said Christine Kuch, spokesperson of SPCA National. An urgent appeal is made to ask
members of the public to be vigilantin this regard. If animals are leftwithcare-givers, please ensure that theyhave contact numbers for the SPCAand local veterinarians. If anyone is travelling with pets,
ensure that they are not let off thelead. Above all, ensure that all ani-mals have identification with micro-chip ID being the preferred option. It is sad to report that the theft of
animals is increasing so it is vitallyimportant to ensure that gates re-
main closed and locked and that ani-mals are “secure”. The best way toprevent poisonings and theft is tokeep animals indoors at night.“People who have animals are re-
sponsible – morally and legally – fortheir safe-keeping and well-being.This includes during holiday peri-ods,” said Kuch.Check and ensure that all animals
are vaccinated up to date, includingagainst rabies. Above all, don’t leaveanything to the last minute.“Please support your local SPCA.
At this time of the year, resources re-ally are stretched to the limit and theworkload increases. Donations offood, items for sale as well as finan-cial support, are always welcomedand are vital to the survival of everyindividual SPCA,” said Kuch.A final piece of advice is to ask eve-
ryone to carry the telephone numberof your local SPCA with you on yourcell phone so that they canbe advisedof any situation involving an animalwhich may need help or the welfareof which is compromised in anyway.
Make sure yourpets are safe

Dié streek – as die Afrika-oorske-

THE first two houses are un-der constructionat the revo-lutionary Crossways Farm
Village near the Van Stadens Riv-er bridgenearPortElizabethwitha further seven building plans ap-proved.
The installation of most of the bulkservices for the first phase of the de-velopment has been concluded whilework on the services for the firstphase of the light industrial sectionis expected to start in February.
Dr Chris Mulder, a director of thedevelopment company whose firm,CMAI, is responsible for the plan-ning and design development of thisfuturistic village concept, said thedevelopers had hoped to be able totransfer the stands sold to the namesof the new owners by the end of Janu-ary. Some 85% of the plots in the firstphase have been sold.
“Transfer can be taken only onceall the services have been installed.
However, we had to allow the con-tractor, who had to complete work onphase one before 15 December, an ex-tension to the end of January as themore than 500 mm of rain that fell inSeptember and October saturatedthe soil to such an extent that workon the roads was delayed by fourweeks.”
Mulder said there were several as-pects which set this groundbreakingdevelopment apart. “The first is thatit will form an integral part of a dairyfarm and thereby offer the quality oflife associated with farm living.
“The second is that the village, thefirst of its kind in South Africa, willin time be largely self-sustaining andself-reliant. Houses can be equippedwith a battery of photovoltaic panelsto convert sunlight to electricitywhile rainwater harvested off theroof will be stored in on-site reser-
voirs required for each house. Solarwater heating is compulsory. Eachowner can basically decide to whatextent he/she wants to be “off thegrid” or totally independent of theESCOM power supply.
“One of the houses being built atpresent has, in fact, been designed tosupply all its own energy and waterneeds and will even convert organicwaste to cooking gas. It will operatecompletely independently of the na-tional grid.”
Mulder said Crossways Farm Vil-lage, which will ultimately com-prise 750 houses, will have its ownmunicipality controlled by thehomeowners’ association. “It willprovide all the services of a munici-pality; it will maintain infrastruc-ture, roads and public spaces, oper-ate an extensive security and sur-veillance system and see to refuse
removal and waste recycling. Andas it is directly responsible to home-owners, the quality of service andspeed of response are expected to bevastly superior to the current aver-age experience.”
Crossways Farm Village has beendescribed as possessing all thecharm and lifestyle of a country townof yesteryear but at the same time of-fering a modern urban lifestyle sup-ported by the most modern technolo-gy. A fibre-optic data communica-tion network will provide everyhouse with the most advanced levelof connectivity. All the ducts carry-ing the cables have already been in-stalled as part of the services for thefirst phase.
Crossways Farm Village lies nextto the N2 (Exit 707) and is within easyreach of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage,Humansdorp and Jeffrey’s Bay andSt Francis. It will offer convenienceshopping, extensive sports facilities,crèches and a modern clinic. One ofthe best schools in the Eastern Cape,Woodridge College, is an immediateneighbour and a few kilometres fromthe entrance to the village.
Mulder said the farm constitutedan integral part of the developmentthe same way a golf course did in agolf estate. The existing dairy farmwith its stud herd is fully operationaland generating profits. “The ownersliving in Crossways Farm Villagewill not only have access to freshmilk in addition to a range of dairy
products but also to fresh fruit andvegetables to be grown commerciallyon the farm.”
Since opening its doors in part ofthe modern sales complex on theproperty, the Crossways CountryKitchen restaurant quickly became apopular stopover along the N2. Runby the UK trained chef Trevor Steynand his partner, Mika Venter, itsources only products of the area, while all vegetables are grown organ-ically in the restaurant’s garden.
More than one third of the 563 haproperty will be developed as a na-ture reserve and linked to the neigh-bouring Van Stadens Wild FlowerReserve in keeping with the eco-friendly philosophy behind the de-velopment.
Mulder said the Village wasplanned and designed to be for every-one. “We are looking to accommo-date first-time homeowners, smalland working families, professionalpeople, single parents, empty-nesters, some of whom may have re-tired. To this end prices have beenstructured to cover the full spectrumfrom affordable to luxury.”
The first house of 75 sq meter liv-ing space plus a garage of 25 sq metreis scheduled for completion on Dec 15and visitors are welcome to visit andlook at this unique concept. Thishouse forms part of the “Castle”,complete with interior courtyards, playing area and fruit and vegetablegardens.

The curtain closed on the current chapterof the legendary 5th generation Isuzu KBbakkie as the last unit rolled down the lineat General Motors South Africa’s Struan-dale plant in Port Elizabeth at the end of No-vember.
The first Isuzu was built in South Africain 1979 and this, the 5th generation of Isu-zu’s tough one tonne workhorse, was firstlaunched in the South African market inAugust 2004 reaching average sales of 1326units per month with over 140 060 units soldin its generation’s lifetime.
The Isuzu KB has been delivering forbusiness, fleet and individual private own-ers throughout South Africa with over 12 %market share driven by a comprehensiverange of over 20 locally engineered modelderivatives in its eight year lifecycle.
“Building the last unit of the 5th genera-tion Isuzu KB was an emotional feeling. Ob-viously there is some retrospection that weare leaving some history behind us but alsoan understanding that we need to continueto evolve and stay ahead with competitiveproduct,” says General Motors South Africa
Plant Manager, Clayton Whitaker. The 5th generation Isuzu KB showed it
had lost none of its predecessors’ legendarytoughness when, as the vehicle of choice forthe Special Forces units involved in Opera-tion Mandume in 2007, it took on the chal-lenge of eradicating illegal firearms andammunition in Angola.
With this tough mission accomplished Is-uzu then turned its sights on the 72 hourspeed and endurance records set by its mainrival a few years before.
“We are quite excited about the next gen-eration of the Isuzu KB. I really like the ag-gressive styling and clever engineering ofthis vehicle,” says 6th Generation LaunchManager, Patrick McCarty
Quality Manager, Andy Alexander add-ed, “The current Isuzu KB is testimony toa tried and tested product quality recipe.Just recently a competition was run wherethe winning Isuzu KB with the highest mile-age had clocked just over 1 000 000 kilome-tres. There is no better way of proving thequality of a product than this and the IsuzuKB has done this impeccably.”
New generation Isuzuon its way The Star of Hope Rugby Football Club had
a very successful season. They kicked-off ona high note by winning the South AfricanRugby Union sponsored Lagunya EasterRugby Tournament in Cape Town.
As the Club was a first-time participant, this was a major victory for Uitenhage rug-by.
Back home, both its 1st team and 1st Re-serves, won the Uitenhage & District sectionof the Wellman Harmse League. They alsobecame the runner-up in the Mayoral Cup,while the 1st team went on to win the Presi-dent’s Cup.
By winning the Wellman Harmse Uitenha-ge & Districts section, it has put the Club in
a strong position to be promoted to the Ad-ams Cup.
“I congratulate both our teams for thisachievement,” said Timothy Nkonki, theClub President.
He praised the hard work of coach VuyoNompondo, who in turn gave praise to hiscaptain, Siviwe Nkonki, who led from thefront, with the entire team not far behind.
Star of Hope would like to extend their sin-cerest gratitude to everyone who gave sup-port, people who assisted them financiallyand with kit.
“You are not only helping the Club, but al-so helping to build the future of manyyouths. Thank you once more,” said Nkonki.
