Moet egter nie ’n aasvoël in rehabilitasie of

Blenheim House, the property at 4 BairdStreet formerly known as “No. 1 Uitenhage”this year sees its 200th year of existence as oneof the few remaining mansions built duringthe 1800s.
It was originally a single storey house buildin 1815 for J.B. Knobel, a land surveyor, andthe property extended to John Street. The
foundations of the early houses in Uitenhagewere build of river stones embedded in clay.According to architects No. 1 Uitenhage wasbuilt so well that five storeys could have beenadded on the foundation.
BlenheimHousehadmanyowners anddur-ing 1893 Mrs Niven sold it to a then memberof parliament, thehonourable JohnDolley.Atthat stage the house with its 62cm walls con-sisted of a hall, large drawing-room, dining-room, pantry and spacious kitchen as well as
seven lofty, well-ventilated bedrooms, veran-dah and broad stoep.
During 1903 the upper-storey was added tothe house with a large balcony on three sidesof the property. Two gables were erected atthe front of the house portraying the dates1815 and 1903. The house was known for itsremarkable woodwork like the hand-carvedwooden fireplacewhichwas shipped from Ita-ly, a magnificent teak staircase and teakwoodwork on the balcony
TheDolley-descendants continued to live atBlenheimuntil 1976 afterwhich it was left un-occupied and deteriorated. During 1978 the LeRoux brothers Dawie and Pieter bought itfrom the heirs to the Dolley Estate. They re-stored the building back to its unique archi-tectural beauty to house their legal practice.
