Residents from these areas are requested to vaccinate their ani- mals as soon as possible. “Rabies was suspected after a meerkat acted out of character and bit a dog during a fight almost two weeks ago. “After the meerkat was killed, the animal was tested at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Insti- tute of the University of Pretoria and the dog was placed in isola- tion in an attempt to curb the disease from spreading,” said mu- nicipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron. Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in warm-blooded animals and it is transmitted by animals most commonly by a bite from the car- rier. “After the Onderstepoort re- sults came back positive last Fri- day, the Dog Control Unit worked feverishly to vaccinate as many cats and dogs as possible to con- tain the spread of the disease,” said Baron. Another effective precaution- ary measure is to wash a wound thoroughly with cold water and soap shortly after a bite. A mobile unit is currently busy in the area to treat the animals. Residents can call the munici- pality’s Dog Control Unit at 0041 506 1743 to find out where to find the mobile unit. Abalone found on deserted road Abalone with a street value of ap- proximately R250 000 were found by Uitenhage police on Monday night in a deserted Nissan double cab on the Amanzi road. “Whilst underway to a complaint they noticed the stationary bakkie and investigated. The keys were still inside and they also discovered bags filled with frozen abalone,” said po- lice spokesperson W.O. Gerda Swart. No arrests were made and police are following up on information. Po- lice confiscated about 37kg of abalo- ne. The acting Station Commander and Head of Visible police at SAPS Uitenhage, Col. André Swart praised the members for the effective man- ner in which they performed their duties.

Currently 1 out of 5 suffers from hay fever
Climate change toblame for hay fever
Hay fever may become a problemfor nearly half of all South Africansby 2050 as a result of climate change.
“According to SA’s foremostauthorities on aerobiology, climatechange will significantly increasethe amount of pollen in the air, oneof the most important triggers ofhay fever, with average worldtemperatures forecast to rise 3°C –4°C by 2050,” says Dr Michael Levin,a leading allergy consultant to phar-maceutical company, Pharma Dy-namics.
“Heatwaves often lead to moregeneral practitioner consultationsand sales of over-the-counter aller-gy remedies, including amongpeople who never complain of it,who suddenly suffer because pollenlevels are so high that their triggerpoint was reached. One can draw avery clear link between climatechange and hay fever.
“Warmer temperatures allowtrees to pollinate earlier and longerthan usual. Spring in South Africabegins an average of 14 days earliernow than a few decades ago.
“This means that pollen-produc-ing plants, such as flowers, trees, grasses and weeds have a muchlonger pollen-producing seasonthan in the past,” says Dr Levin.
Currently about 20% (1 out of 5)of the general population sufferfrom hay fever and the figure hasbeen steadily increasing in recentyears.
The hay fever season is kick-started by trees pollinating fromAugust until October.
“However, grass pollen thentakes over with its greatest peakfrom November to March. Manyhay fever sufferers, however, arelikely to experience symptoms forup to nine months of the year in
some areas, because of grasses polli-nating at different times of the year.
Essential treatments for hayfever include antihistamines, which tend to be more effective iftaken early on in the season.
Dr Levin points out that salineeye and nose drops are highly effec-tive in children and can be used upto six times a day, so are very safe.
“If usingadecongestant, it shouldonly be taken for a maximum of fiveto seven days, because one can getused to its effects and could end upwith a persistently blocked nose.Sudden withdrawal after long termuse of decongestants can also causesevere rebound blockage.
Cities will be most affected aswarmer summers are predicted, which intensifies the effects of airpollution and can trigger allergiesquickly in those who are suscepti-ble.

Police warn driversto ‘think twice’
Uitenhage police embarked ontheir festive season operations andwarned drivers to think twice be-fore having that “one last drink”before driving.
Police operations will be focus-ing on trio crimes (house robber-ies, business robberies and carjacking), contact crimes andcrimes against women and chil-dren amongst others.
“There will be intensified opera-tions and increased police visibili-ty.
“This strategic approach will en-sure that the police will be a stepahead of criminals during the fes-tive season and beyond,” said po-lice spokesperson Lt. Col. PriscillaNaidu, from Corporate Communi-cation of the Uitenhage/Hu-mansdorp Cluster.
There will be stop and searchroadblocks held randomly. Policewill also be working with the traf-fic authorities to clamp down ondrunken driving and reckless driv-ers.
“A special operation held recent-ly on a Friday night in the Uitenha-ge area, netted 8 drunken drivers,”said Lt.Col. Naidu.
Police urge drivers to be respon-sible and warn that they will not besympathetic to thosewhobreak thelaw.
“We appeal to motorists passingthrough these roadblocks to be pa-tient and to cooperate with the au-thorities.
“Let us work together so thateveryone can enjoy a crime-freeand safe festive season,” saidLt.Col. Naidu.
