The police, defence force and vari-ous government departments haveembarked on a nationwide opera-tion called ‘Operation Paseka’ to en-sure that all people in South Africaare safe during the Easter holidays.
“Security throughout the prov-ince will be heightened in prepara-tion for either the influx or exodusof people from their respectiveprovinces,” said police spokesper-
son Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu.Planned operations are intended
to primarily prevent crimes, partic-ularly serious crimes suchas aggra-vated robberies, crimes againstwomen and children, the prolifera-tion of firearms, illegal liquor out-lets and counterfeit.
“The national and provincialroads will also be closely monitoredto detect speedsters and other con-
traventions with a view to drasti-cally reducing carnage on our roadsaround this holiday period.
“The police will focus on stop andsearch operations, roadblocks, spe-cial operations which will includebusiness, house and cash-in-transitrobberies, vehicle hi-jackings andthe illegal use and abuse of liquor,”said Lt.Col. Naidu.
The police have vowed to be out
in full force this Easter period andthey will not tolerate any criminali-ty.
“The abuse of alcohol has the po-tential to lead to more crimes beingcommitted either by or against theindulging person, therefore suchabuse and drunkenness will not betaken lightly.
“Drivers should make alterna-tive arrangements should they de-
cide to drink,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.Parents are advised to keep a
close eye on their children whenvisiting the seaside. Never allowtheir children to wander into thesurf unaccompanied.
The message from the police is:“Together we can do more to fightcrime and enjoy this Easter break.”

UD REPORTER
Call her gutsy, call her blonde am-bition, callherwhateveryouwant- the fact is this woman has gotwhat it takes to have successfullymanaged her business for the pastdecade in an industry known to beexclusively a man’s world!
Elize van der Mescht took overownership of Uitenhage Scrap MetalDealers at 15 Sellick Street during2002, after her beloved husband, An-ton, passed away. This blue eyed, well manicured businesswoman hasquickly spotted the trick of the tradeand as a result her business has esca-lated beyond many people’s expecta-tions.
Her business “savvy” and charmwere soon heard of by Nedbank andthey nominated her as BusinessWoman of the Year.
Dressed immaculately, sitting inher leather chair at an organised of-fice desk, files up to date and diaryscheduled to the hour, Elize had thefollowing to say to the UD News re-garding her career:
From modelling to scrap dealing“I believe with my whole heart
that I am the Lord’s ‘witbroodjie’ asI am spoiled with so many blessings.
Success depends on one’s way ofthinking. It’s up to each and every-
one of us to decide whether we aregoing to allow ourselves to be influ-enced by negative thoughts. I chooseto not linger on set-backs and nega-tivity. I choose to keep focused on thepositive and have high expectationsof myself.
The economy is so often blamedwhen a business goes through trou-bled waters, but one has to be clever.Adapt, work hard, try every trick aslong as it is honest, but don’t go theoverdraft way - that is a catch-22 fi-nancial situation.”
She had to bid her love for model-ling goodbye, but did it with flair asshe entered a whole new industry ofscrap metal dealing, rust, dust andtight competitiveness.
“As a child, whilst my brother andI were playing he expressed the de-sire that one day he wanted to be apreacher. I replied that I wanted tobe a successful businesswomanknown by all. He became a preacherand I am now living my childhooddream. I guess its proof of the sayingif you can dream it you can do it!”
Go out and make a difference“My motto in business is to begin
with ‘A’ but investigate the opportu-nities from ‘B’ up to ‘Z’ as at somepoint you need to move on.
I detest laziness and hate losers. There’s no reason to run away fromtrouble. Tackle it and sort it out -that’s the only way to secure growth
in your business. It must be a case ofonce bitten, twice shy, otherwiseyou’ll never learn.
I think one of my successes in thisscrap metal industry is that I respectthe men in this business. I keep a pro-fessional distance and follow my ownhead. I’m no copy-cat. In a way Ithink I’ve matured in this kind ofbusiness.
I am not office-bound and prefer togo on site and be in touch with thepracticalities of the business.
It is important to enjoy whateverkind of work one is doing. I simplylove what I’m doing. I like people andthink I must be doing somethingright as most of my staff are still withme from when I took over the busi-ness.
One can have a thousand employ-ees, but without managing skills todirect and lead them, all the hardwork will be without success.
People should however alwaysbear in mind that they are not indis-pensable. Somewhere, sometime nomatter where you earn your living, there will be a successor.”
Time to chill“Privacy is very important to me.
Apart from the little bit of sport I en-joy, I also have a passion for travel-ling and to explore this beautifullcountry of ours. One needs to focuson one’s private life and ensure thatone keeps the balance between work

The River Kai comprises three “small town”(Despatch) guys with very different styles ofmaking music, which is true to each of them.
In fact the sound of their songs cannot beconfined to one specific genre and borrowsfrom styles such as blues, funk, hard rock, me-lodic rock and Indie.
Gerdie Strydom (guitarist and vocalist)started working on the bulk of the current ma-terial in early 2010, recording the music on hislaptop. A gifted musician, he relies on a tunedear and gut feel to conjure his rocking riffs andenchanting melodies.
Later that year Strydom, handed his record-ings over to long time friend John-Ray Tait(bassist) to write lyrics for the songs he con-ceptualized.
Tait, a word wizard, went on to write lyricsthat complemented the feel of each of Stry-dom’s songs. The lyrics created a story linelinkingone song to thenext. StrydomandTait, have collaborated before in the bands, FFD(2000–2004) and then again with Kantlyn
(2004–2006). FinallyEnricoOdendaal slotted inas the drummer and quickly merged withStrydom and Tait, bringing a fresh style andperspective to the material.
The finalized trio have since fine tunedtheir sound and rapidly generated a buzz withtheir distinctive style on the stages of PortElizabeth, Grahamstown, KKNK and EastLondon.
The River Kai recently recorded a musicvideo that is currently playing on MK. Songsto look out for will be “Blessed Eyes” (a hi-fifriendly upbeat song, about kindred spirits inthe heat of passion) also playing on Algoa FMand Bay FM.
Then there is “The Passion” (a hard rockripper, about a Hero triumphing over evil) and“Shaka” (a feel good Afrikaans melodic rocksong, about going back to your roots).SLook out for them tomorrow with Shawn
Phillips at Veldbrandfees 2 in Port Elizabethand on the 27th April with Heuwels Fantan-sties at Anibrandfees in Uitenhage.

Twenty-five speedway riders and Aussie sidecars from Johannesburg, will be heading forPort Elizabeth.
Allied Speedway in association with theWalkerville Speedway Club are staging anoval track extravaganza, featuring the verybest South African speedway riders.
The first leg will take place at George Motorclub tomorrow with the second leg at VictoryRaceway in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
A speedway bike is unique in that it has nobrakes and no gears. The bikes are driftedsideways around the corners. The speedwaysidecars, like their two wheeled cousins alsohave no brakes or gears. These scary monstermachines carry a passenger in the sidecarknown as a jockey. The jockey is essential tokeep the bike stable and this is done by someacrobatic moves to distribute the weight ofthe rig especially around the corners.
Gates open at 15:00 and racing starts at18:00. Entry fee will be R50 for adults and R20for kids. For more information contact BobbyHack 0082 667 0427.
