The owner of an auto-mechanical workshopheard of the predicament the SPCA found it-self in when their vehicle was out of commis-sion and offered to repair it at no cost. One of the vehicles owned by the Uitenhage
SPCA is a 2006 VW Caddy, currently sportinga mileage of 370 025km.“Amazing, considering that the Caddy was
built as a leisure vehicle andnot aworkhorse. But it has served the organisation well, andliterally runs 24/7, assisting the communityand animals in distress,” said Deirdre Swift
from the Uitenhage SPCA managementboard.Unfortunately as canbe expected, an ageing
vehicle requires more maintenance, incur-ring costs which the organisation can ill af-ford. Johan Jonker, better known as “Ving-ers” and the owner of Auto Works was theSPCA’s “knight in shining armour!” Accord-ing to Swift, Johan’s response to repair the ve-hicle at no cost was incredible.“He offered to sponsor future maintenance
as well. In addition, repairs are conducted at
very short notice, ensuring as little disrup-tion as possible to the SPCA services requiredby the community.“Our VWCaddy now proudly bears the Au-
to Works sponsorship for all to see,” saidSwift.
The Uitenhage SPCA is greatly apprecia-tive of this remarkable gesture from Johanand other local businesses’ contributions toanimal welfare.“We are proud to be associated with these
businesses,” said Swift.

The Uitenhage Lion Club flagship service project is backup again after a two term lay off for reasons not undertheir control.
The winter jersey campaign commenced in 2006 as aresult of the high unemployment in the Uitenhage andDespatch communities. This campaign is where schoolwinter jerseys are donated to no fee primary schools onlyfor those children in need.
“Normally donations are handed to the schools at thecommencement of the second school quarter for whichwewill definitely aim for next year,” said Lion PresidentAndré van Niekerk
The main source of funds raised to make the projecta reality is derived from the highly successful Lion Rallywhich is held in Cradock over the first weekend ofDecember each year. The primary schools which benefit-ted from the 2015 Lions Winter Jersey Project are Innes,Winterberg, Despatch Primary and Albertyn.

Oppad terughuis toehethulle,

The Vallei Community Veterinary Clinic, together with volunteer community mem-bers, strives to educate pet owners fromdisadvantaged areas in the Sundays RiverValley on basic pet health care.
The Vallei CVC has been running for anumber of years, building a relationshipwith thepet owners andprovidingamonth-ly sterilization clinic to help control the ev-er expanding pet population. Hand in handwith creating a sense of responsibility to-wards their pets, owners are requested a‘donation’ towards the sterilization of theirpets. However the amount they can afford, does not cover the costs. This is where con-tinued fund-raising efforts by volunteers isa necessity to keep the CVC running. The CVC, which is run by SAVA (South
African Veterinary Association) is a coun-try-wide primary veterinary health careorganisation for animals from disadvan-taged communities.
“The CVC tries to fill a need for pet own-ers to be able to provide basic health careand welfare to their animals,” said UlricaStiemie from the Vallei CVC.“Along with offering sterilizations and
vaccinations the CVC also promotes hu-mane education especially to the childrenin these communities, creating awarenessof empathy and caring towards animals, hoping to bring an end to animal sufferingthrough ignorance anduncontrolled breed-ing.”This year, CVCwill be hosting a golf day,
combining a fun day on the greenwith rais-ing funds for the continued sterilization ofthe Sundays River Valley community pets. The CVC invites all golfers to join them onSeptember 12th at the Kirkwood Golf Club.
