Apparently suspects are using remote con- trol devices to override the remote vehicle security system. “This enables them to gain access to the vehicle and take valuable items that were left inside the vehicle. Owners are once again requested to double check and ensure that the vehicle is locked before leaving it. “It is especially applicable when you cannot hear the clicking sound or see the head lights flashing when locking the vehicle.” It should also be second nature to all vehicle owners or passengers not to leave any visible items especially valuable and expensive items such as laptops, i-pads, computer equip- ment or cellphones in vehicles. “Do not leave items like a firearm or large amounts of cash in the glove compartment or anywhere else in the vehicle. “It is against the law to leave your firearm in a vehicle,” said W/O Swart. This project was the brain child of Shaun Gilbert and Nic Bakker from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. It also was con- structed by Rotarians themselves. “This may very well be described as the club’s first physical Bridge of Friendship,” said Aubrey Nel, president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. Aman from Uitenhage was pleasantly sur-prised after receiving a letter from the
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
“I could not believe my eyes! Three monthsago I wrote a letter congratulating PrinceWilliam and Kate on their newborn PrinceGeorge.
“They replied by sending me a photo of theRoyal couple with their baby and it wasaccompanied by a thank you letter addressedin my name,” said Joseph Jooste from Uiten-hage.
“My letter must have been one of severalmillions they received from fans all over the
world. What is absolutely amazing is thatthey did not regard it as only one of millions, but respected my interest in them and actual-ly replied.
“It only took five days since the Royal letterwas posted in England to arrive here at mypost box in Uitenhage.”
In the letter addressed to “Master JosephJooste” from Uitenhage the following waswritten:“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were
most touched that you took the trouble to writeas you did on the occasion of the birth of theirson, Prince George. Their Royal Highnesseshave been overwhelmed by all the wonderfulmessages they have received and send you theirwarmest thanks and best wishes.”

There is something undeniably captivat-ing about Digby and the Lullaby. Perhapsit’s their introspective honesty and un-complicated melodies.
Former Uitenhage resident, RouchelleHubsch (on piano and lead vocals), andDarren Peens (on guitar and backing vo-cals) have cast their indie-folk spell onmesmerized audiences from Cape Town toNew York.
Their debut album ‘The SomewhereWind’ is an independently funded labourof love that took two years to make. Pro-
duced in New York by Kieran Kelly, thealbum features world renowned musi-cians.
“We wanted to make good art,” saysDarren.
“We wanted to create something thatwas beautiful,” Rouchelle adds.
Digby and the Lullaby were on the roadin the Eastern Cape introducing their al-bum “The Somewhere Wind”. They haveperformed at the Old Cash Store and Jef-freys Bay and currently are on their wayto Cape Town.

“No auntie! Don’t go there. They will mugyou!...”
A young passer-by shouted these wordswhilst the UD News reporter visited the openarea at the corner of John Street and Henriet-ta Lane in the central business district ofUitenhage, after receiving complaints regard-ing illegal dumping.
“For fifteen years we have taken it uponourselves to keep this open area clean andhave had the grass cut. The condition with il-legal dumping is a losing battle and a realhealth hazard,” said Salomé Pieterse from thephysiotherapist practice in John Street.
“On Sundays we are urged to come and
clean-up the area in front of our practice sothat our patients do not have to face themess.”
A visit to the vast open site, which also isused as an informal driving lesson site re-vealed that there are people squatting on theproperty.
The two palm trees could just as well bedubbed “twin toilets” judging by the smell ofurine and faeces.
“We suddenly have a problem with flies atour practice. Look at the illegal dumping nextto our boundary wall; it is absolutely disgust-
ing. After one phones the municipality re-questing to have the refuse removed, it is saidit’s the responsibility of the parks depart-ment. When phoning them, we are referred toanother department. It seems that there is nopride in keeping the town clean,” said Pie-terse.
According to her, a few year ago there wasalso a terrible stench which eventually led tothe discovery of a decomposed body in thelong grass.
“These are not the kind of conditions thatwe are suppose to live in.”

By donating blood, you are giving a pat-ient something science can’t create.
The festive season is synonymous withblood shortages and the South African Na-tional Blood Service is appealing to the publicto add blood donation to their to-do list, beforegoing on holiday.

=Your blood is needed ... ! Rochelle Momberg (centre) a Burkitts Lymphoma Leukemia (bonemarrow and ovaries cancer) patient was the special guest speaker at a SANBS function. This 14year old thanked blood donors for giving her a second chance in life. With her are (back fromleft) Nina van Wyk, Nigel Jantjies and Liezl Barnard, all from SANBS. PHOTO:HEILIE COMBRINCK
“If you are not personally in a situationwhere blood is required as part of your medi-cal treatment, it is quite hard to imagine howimportant an adequate safe blood supply is”said Nina van Wyk, Public Relations Practi-tioner SANBS, Port Elizabeth Branch. In South Africa, a blood transfusion takes
place every 39 seconds.“Someone is relying on your willingness to
give of yourself, of your blood in order forthemto celebrate another festive seasonor forsome, just another day.”Rochelle Momberg (14) from Port Elizabeth
was diagnosed with Burkitts LymphomaLeukemia and told her story during a SANBSmedia function.“Before I got sick I heard a lot about cancer.
What I did not knowwas that it would changemy very own life at the tender age of 13.“During the treatment I received blood
transfusions. It made me feel so much betterthat I called it ‘a can of the best’.Iwant to thankeveryonewhodonates ‘a can
of the best’ as it gave me a second chance inlife!”Currently, there is a great need to sign up
more apheresis platelet donors. The ideal Platelet donor is someone who
regularly donates blood, has good veins, weighs more than 55kg and who has one totwo hours to spare for the procedure.Platelet donors can donate as often as
monthly whereas normal blood donors canonly donate blood every 56 days. The procedure is similar to blood donation
but only platelets are harvested and all otherblood components are returned to the donor. The shelf life of platelets is only 5 days andtherefore the donation of platelets is done onan appointment system only.If you are interested in signingupas a plate-
let donor please contact the Special DonorServices Centre on 041 391 8217.
)For more information on blood donationdays and clinics, please contact the SANBSCall Centre on 0800 11 90 31, visitwww.sanbs.org.za or follow us on Facebookand Twitter.
