PORT HARDY—After coming up empty-handed a year ago in the annual Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day poster contest, Veronica Barnes did not have particularly high hopes when she entered this fall.
So it came as a bit of a surprise to the Grade 10 student at Port Hardy’s Avalon Adventist Junior Academy, swept prizes across three categories to achieve a rare “triple crown” in the local portion of the contest for elementary and secondary school students.
For her wins in the colour poster design, essay writing and poetry categories, Barnes qualifi ed to advance to the zone competition against students from across the northern half of
Vancouver Island, and claimed a $90 cheque in a presentation by George Kearey of Port Hardy’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch.
“Last year I tried really hard and got nothing,” said Barnes. “This year I said, ‘I’ll just do it to get a grade.’ I just rushed through it and got fi rst place.”
Kearey noted the only thing tougher at the local level is adding a win for black-and-white poster, the fourth jewel in the contest. Frankly, he said when asked, the triple crown is a very uncommon feat.
“Oh, bloody rights it is,” Kearey said. “You try to do it.”
Barnes was one of 13 Avalon entrants competing against students in other Port Hardy schools, and just one of six fi rst-place winners.
Danielle Lacasse was a double winner in the Grade 8 competition, for her essay and her colour poster. Other fi rst-place winners were Matthew McDonald (Gr. 10), Audrey Johnson (Gr. 9), Serenity Galitzine (Gr. 7) and Devin Gullacher (Gr. 5).
It was the best showing yet in the contest for the small private school, principal Clifford Wood said.
“Oh my gosh, they all moved up,” he said. “Each student placing fi rst, second or third received a cash prize and a certifi cate for each category.”
Barnes had been home sick for three days and nearly missed the awards presentation by Kearey. The presentation turned out to be something of an early present for the student,
who said she had early spent her babysitting money to help provide a pair of shoes to a needy youth in Africa
through the TOMS Shoe Drop program.
“I got Christmas money,” Barnes said of the Legion prize.
Veronica’s triple victory
Amanda Barnes, a Grade 10 student at Port Hardy’s Avalon Adventist Junior Academy, gets a hug and a cheque from George Kearey of Port Hardy’s Royal Canadian Legion branch. Barnes earned a rare “triple crown” win the in the Legion’s annual Remembrance Day poster, essay and poetry contest.

It is always interesting to come across fi shing pictures that may have been kept boxed up in many homes. Pictures are also bought at estate sales across the province. I came across a picture of a 76 pound spring salmon caught in 1902. Big fi sh and big memories captures on fi leby Thompsons Studio. In 2012 I kept in touch with the fi sh catches at the Tyee Club in Campbell River. At the pier I met with anglers from all over the world and the
experience of visiting with the many anglers is fascinating as each person has a story. The Sport Fishing Institute had a meting in Campbell River and was well attended by sport fi shermen, lodge owners and fi shing guides. As we closed out the 2012 fi shing season strong winds and bad weather kept most anglers off the water. The weather cleared December 14th and the fl at
water and sunshine saw a few boats out near Willow Point. Some feeder Chinooks have been located at Bates Beach. Many undersized salmon have been caught and released and some keepers have been taken in the 10 to 14 pound range. The Vancouver Island trout hatchery has fi nished its fall release of catchable rainbow trout. 63,512 catchable rainbows have been released into Vancouver Island lakes.

Fishing Guide
I really liked the Queen’s message on Dec. 25.
She spoke of giving of our hearts with love and service. A simple example is I recently put up a small bird feeder which, in the past, the birds have never found! So my heart was warmed when I saw a fl ock of chickadees enjoying their Christmas present the very next day.
I would like to present 12 new things, one for each month of the year, for your consideration in making 2013 an even healthier year than 2012. If the year ahead were to have a personal theme in one word, what would it be for you?
January: Gratitude:
begin a daily journal, writing down fi ve things for which you are grateful each day.
I use Inner Refl ections daily journal and fi nd that it is a great way to keep a diary as well. I include things like hearing a beautiful piece of music on the radio, feeding rotten apples to a deer in my back yard, hearing from or running into a friend and getting a hug whilst doing errands and fi nding my favourite foods on special.
Make it a family affair at the dinner table.
February: Moving more with fun. In
December I found a wonderful yoga program on TV called Namaste TV. There are videos available to make this 20 minute program very enjoyable to do at home. I was
also very inspired to watch Dance Extreme Christmas show at the Tidemark on Dec 14 so I want to check out dancing as a form of exercise. What fun can you
have in order to keep fi t?
March: Eat more colour. Come up with new recipes so that you eat more orange, blue, purple and green vegetables. These vegetables are
great for helping the body detoxify as well as energize you with antioxidants. Soon to arrive on my website is a recipe for butternut squash soup creamed with coconut milk. Pickled purple cabbage makes a lovely side dish as does steamed cabbage.
Adding pesto sauce to steamed broccoli and home made pizza using Udi’s pizza crust is another great way to get vegetables into the kids. Or would you rather just start taking a Greens First drink 4-5 days per week?
April: Body Detox: We now know that we all contain chemicals of some kind so it does a body good to help the cleansing organs drain some of them. Pick one or two
cleansing programs that you like and do them spring and fall of each year, or about the same time you take your car in for a tune up!
May: Concierge Medical Health Profi le: Do you want a comprehensive health profi le of medical testing to see where you are at?
Urinary organic acids, comprehensive stool analysis, genetic detoxifi cation testing, cardiac and infl ammatory profi les are available to help you keep a detailed pulse on your health.
June: Do you have a Foundation of Health? There are basic nutrients that help keep the body out of hospitals and away from prescription drugs and surgery.
Develop a plan to stick with this fi ve days per week to experience optimal health.
July: Be Adventurous: The funny thing about Bucket Lists for me is that as soon as I complete something I add something new!
Have you ever wanted to hike in the mountains but need a guide? Strathcona Park Lodge offers this service close to home or hiking into Hairtrigger Lake at Mt Washington is well travelled. Taking the kids fresh water fi shing to Lake Helen McKenzie is an easy 45 minute hike from the parking lot at the Nordic Lodge, Mt.Washington.
August: Plan for a retreat weekend: See my article: “Filling up the Personal Drip Fund” on how to create a healing, restful solo retreat to recharge your batteries.
September: Spa Day: Have you had a favourite spa experience that you would like to repeat?
Kingfi sher Day Spa in Courtenay comes the closest to my favourite Scandinav Spa, now at Whistler and for something

more rustic Strathcona Park Lodge does have a wood fi red steam sauna on the beach with the lake for a quick cool off! In the European way, “spa” for me needs to include hot and cold water baths or saunas or it is not a spa!
October: Get excited about cooking! Take a cooking class with Amy from Amy’s Kitchen, to learn Asian cooking or with Takao at Takao’s Kitchen to learn how to cook Sushi.
November: Read The Wheat Belly by
Dr. Davis. If there is one
health book to read this year, this is it. I have been recommending wheat free diets for 27 years and now Dr. Davis details the science behind it.
You will feel better even if you just reduce your wheat and grain intake.
December: Get Inspired! Seek out the best culture in Campbell River and be inspired. Twice per year Dance Xtreme puts on a dance recital show that will transport you to Las
Vegas! There are many gems that take place at the Tidemark Theatre including the yearly Banff Film Festival in November.
I adore the HD opera and ballet productions that take place at the Showcase Five theatre at Merecroft Village.
Last month the HD production of the Royal Ballet in London performing the Nutcracker was stunningly beautiful!
I hope these ideas will help instil in you the optimism and resilience to make 2013 be all that you
plan it to be for your optimal personal and professional wellbeing.

Instil optimism, resilienceA recent survey by the BC Chamber of
Commerce has revealed that 63 per cent of businesses do not feel prepared for the transition back to the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on April 1, 2013.
“There are many PST resources now available that BC businesses need to avail themselves of and be made aware of,” said John Winter, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “Many new businesses in BC have never collected the PST, and need brought up to speed so that consumers are not negatively impacted at the cash register come April.”
To help local businesses prepare for the PST, Campbell River Chamber will be offering a PST Workshop on Feb. 6 from 3- 5 p.m.
“The transition to PST will mean a different way of managing sales, invoicing and government remittances that will impact every business in our community,” says Colleen Evans, President and CEO of the Campbell River Chamber. “We want to support our members to make this transition as smoothly as possible and are pleased to be working with the BC Chamber and the Ministry of Finance.”
