The body likes routine. But between the heat, holidays and having the kids around, summer may have seen you stray from your usual diet, sleep and exercise regimes. So why not make the most of the cool, crisp days of harvest time and get back into some healthy habits?

Eating healthily every day is a great place to start. If

you aim to eat all the colours of the rainbow, you can ensure you give your body a wide range of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. In addition to leafy vegetables, greens could include asparagus, zucchini, bok choy and cancer-preventing cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. You have plenty of choices for

your orange, red and yellow hues, including apples, apricots, cantaloupe, bananas, yams, squash, carrots and peppers. The blue/purple end of the spectrum signifies foods high in antioxidants, such as berries and cherries, radishes and beets.

Brown is for mushrooms, many of which are highly medicinal and good immune boosters – particularly oyster, shiitake and reishi.

Unfortunately, the little brown and white button mushrooms

and the larger Portobello, while tasty, aren’t as beneficial as the others. Coldwater fish and organic chicken, representing golden foods, offer

good protein. As a busy mom myself, I know it’s not always easy to remember to eat well. That’s why I recommend a great website, whoneedsacape.

com, which touts “40 Meals in 4 Hours.” Using their recipes and shopping list, you spend one afternoon preparing ingredients to be frozen and later popped in a crockpot. Serve it up with a salad and you’re set! I adapt the recipes to eliminate excess sugar and salt (i.e., fresh mushrooms instead of mushroom soup) and use organic meats, and I’ve been very pleased with the results. Now go get cooking and I’ll be back with more healthy habits for fall.

As wise consumers, we all do our best to do our homework and read labels. If the label says “Made in Canada,” that should be good enough, right? Maybe not — at least not when it comes to flooring.

A recent story on the Global TV program 16 x 9 uncovered a sad truth about the state of the hardwood flooring industry in Canada and the US. According to their research, approximately 80 per cent of hardwood flooring that’s imported into Canada from China is from illegal logging practices and can contain levels of toxic chemicals 350 per cent higher than the legal limits.

This really is an instance of buyer beware – there are no enforcers or laws place to ensure all importers are doing their due diligence. By knowing the manufacturers and their ethics, you can ensure you’re not supporting criminal activity or bringing poisons into your home. Canada has strict laws about logging, processing, use of chemicals and worker safety for a reason. All of this really drove home to me how important it is that we as consumers know where our products come from.
