For the past 90 years the British Columbia Naturopathic Association (BCNA) has supported the naturopathic physicians of B.C. to provide safe and effective medicine for the citizens of B.C. At its inception, there were only a handful of physicians practicing in B.C.

Over the years our numbers grew, and our members and the BCNA have worked tirelessly to support and promote the practice of naturopathic medicine in B.C. We have seen many changes during

these past 90 years. The creation of the

Naturopath’s Act in 1923 guaranteed NDs (Naturopathic doctors) the legal ability to practice this unique and separate system of medicine.

More recently, the profession has taken its place amongst other health professions in the province with regulation under the Health Professions Act and most recently, with the granting of prescribing authority to qualified NDs. Over the past 90 years the profession has grown and matured to more than 400 physicians

who offer primary care in virtually every community in B.C. Naturopathic medicine is the medicine of the new millennium and the BCNA is proud of the way each ND has contributed in their own unique way to the profession and for each doctor’s role in advancing primary care in B.C.

The word doctor comes from the Latin “docere” which means to teach and each ND will assist their patient

to not only understand possible underlying causes of their disease but also to coach them

in keeping as healthy as possible. ND’s educate by giving lectures, writing articles and using educational material to assist their patients in making

decisions for their health. The ND works in partnership with the patient, rather than “telling” them what to do. Due to the length of the appointments and the ability to

look at all aspects of a patients health, the patient has a chance to “tell their story” in full and be heard.

Over the last 27 years of my practice I have learned:

n There is no right or wrong way to treat a patient, there is just the “patients’ way”. By giving the patient the choice of which direction they want to go with their health, we are acting as a coach for change. When patients come to me they are looking for change and they are not sure what that might look like. With the many recipes

that I provide, food choices and where to find them and meal plans along with a detailed treatment plan, patients are given concrete tools to help them make the change. Making even one change per month and keeping that change is certainly the underlying goal that I present to patients.

n My vision of a person’s health may not match theirs so I try to utilize their health goals with good patient care and education. Many patients don’t want a complete over haul of their health,

they may just want a resolution of their chief complaint. Others look forward and see naturopathic medicine as a way of healthy aging, and a way to keep them out of nursing homes and assisted living as long as possible. My focus is to provide the best care possible to each patient.

n While some patients choose not to pay for additional testing, others see the value in getting more clinical information. The best care is individualized; with additional tests, doctor

n Some patients don’t really want to understand the underlying cause of their illness, they just want to get better and they come to naturopathic physicians as a last resort. These same patients may come back years later when they feel more ready to take more responsibility for their health.

n Many patients come to me

because they have a chronic disease like Parkinson’s, chronic fatigue or cancer and they want to live with this diagnosis and still thrive. With cancer patients I have developed an educational package that they can go away with and study to learn ways to best deal with their illness.

n In fact what naturopathic medicine offers the people of British Columbia is just old fashioned Good Medicine. Our medicine is complementary to many drugs and

surgical treatments and affords patients speedier and healthier outcomes. Many oncologists remark that they can spot the patients following naturopathic protocols as being the healthier ones in their waiting rooms.

n Surgeons often comment on the speedier recovery from surgery that they see in naturopathic patients and General Practitioners are happy to see their patients get off medications such as those for reflux and blood pressure they no longer need

when under the care of naturopathic physicians.

Bird lovers are asked to help protect bird populations and prevent the spread of infectious diseases through the regular cleaning of birdfeeders and birdbaths.

During spring, many small migratory songbirds are returning home from winter retreats to the south. Species such as pine siskins, redpolls

and grosbeaks are commonly found in large flocks at this time of year. This can result in high density congregations of birds around birdfeeders and water sources such as birdbaths. While this is a wonderful opportunity for birders, the increased density of the birds as well as the stress of weather and nutrition

challenges can lead to the spread of serious and sometimes fatal diseases among the birds, such as avian conjunctivitis, avian pox virus and salmonella bacterium. Some of these diseases not only threaten local bird populations, but can spread to pets and people handling affected birds and contaminated

materials. Provincial

biologists are asking for the public’s help to maintain bird health and help prevent the spread of these diseases through a number of simple measures. The most important thing people can do is to clean their birdfeeders and birdbaths regularly. This should include replacing birdbath

water every few days and scrubbing and cleaning feeders and birdbaths as well as the area around them at least every couple of weeks.

Other things bird lovers can do to help include: Spreading out multiple feeders to discourage crowding and Keep the area under the feeders clean.

Brian Toner arranges an outing each year for the players attending the Timberline/CR eagles football camp.Jon-Hameister-Ries and Jesse Newman enjoyed the day � shing last Friday. Painters Lodge is now open and the � shing guides are set up to take people out. A full � eet of boats are available and newcomers to Campbell River can go to the dock and talk � shing with the guides. Many guides will log over 900 hours of � shing in 1 season. When the Halibut opened in mid march the � shing has been great in the Sayward area and in May � sh have been caught close to 60 pounds. The Green can has been good this time of year. Discovery Pier in Campbell River is now open for the season and the big one has yet to be caught. Still early in the season the locals, tourists and � shermen will make this a fun spot to be and there are many stories to be told. Last week there were many whale sightings and a few years ago the seals were � ghting for pink salmon that were caught at the pier. In general last year � shing was slower with bigger � sh being caught. Jamie Dunn caught 4 � sh last year and will once again try to be King of the Pier. This time of year the lakes are producing some nice trout, try Mary Beavertail and Roberts Lake. Mark Dinney got his 7 pound 2 ounce trout � shing Roberts Lake in 95.

When it comes to newborn wild animals, mother always knows best, and so with fawning and calving season underway, provincial biologists are reminding people that newborn deer, elk or moose should not be touched or moved when encountered.

People who find these newborns alone often mistakenly believe they have been abandoned, but usually they have only been left there temporarily by their mother, who will return. Intervening in these situations by “rescuing”

the fawn or calf is rarely necessary and will usually do more harm than good.

It is normal for mother deer, elk and other ungulates to leave their young alone for long periods, returning a few times a day to nurse and relying on the newborn’s lack of scent to protect them from predators. Returning mothers that find humans or pets nearby may leave or can become aggressive to defend their offspring from the perceived threat. The mother will return if the young

is left alone. Although these

newborns may appear abandoned, it is rarely the case, and if they are removed they will

be orphaned. While professional wildlife rehabilitation facilities in some areas of B.C. can successfully rear these newborns, there

is no maternal care and their chances of survival are far less than if they had been raised by their true mother.

This is true not just for deer; many mammals leave their young alone for long periods of time, only to return to feed them at regular intervals. So, if you encounter a young deer or calf in the wild at this time of the year, appreciate the experience, but don’t approach or intervene.

Quick Facts: If you find a fawn or

calf that you think may be orphaned, here’s what you should do:

n If it is lying quietly, leave it alone and leave the area. Your presence will discourage the mother

from returning. n Keep all children

and especially dogs away from the area.

n If you think the fawn or calf is not being cared for by its mother, return the next day to check. If it is in the exact same spot, it may be injured or orphaned. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible, but do not touch or move the animal.

n Do not touch or feed the animal.

On a bright, clear, sunny summer morning in July 2010 a group of 13 intrepid adventurers scrambled onto the 6,000 foot summit of Crown Mountain, high in the wilderness of Strathcona Park.

They had come from various walks of life, some experienced mountaineers and others on their � rst-ever climb.

What united them all was a desire to celebrate the creation of Strathcona, the � rst of British Columbia’s Provincial Parks.

The Strathcona Centennial Expedition travelled for three weeks in July and August 2010 across Vancouver Island from Campbell River to Port Alberni, over 300 kilometres through the heart of Strathcona Park.

They journeyed by

canoe and on foot via the rugged valleys and mountains, retracing the steps of the father of BC Parks, Price Ellison.

Ellison was a rancher from the Okanagan, MLA and Minister in the Government of Sir Richard McBride.

In the summer of 1910 Ellison and a party of 23 had completed this very same journey to assess the suitability of the Strathcona Reserve for park status.

Ellison was so impressed by what he saw and experienced that he wrote a glowing account to McBride’s cabinet.

In March 1911 legislation was passed enacting the Strathcona Act, creating B.C.’s � rst park.

In Ellison’s party was his nephew Harry McClure-Johnson who was the expedition’s of� cial scribe. Johnson

detailed the whole adventure from Victoria via steamship to Campbell River and their epic traverse across the lakes and mountains to Port Alberni.

For a hundred years this beautifully written account of an important chapter in B.C.’s history has been cared for in museum archives along with a collection of photographs by Frank Ward taken along the expedition route.

Now, alongside a twin journal from the 2010 Strathcona Centennial Expedition, Johnson’s words and Ward’s photographs have been published for the � rst time.

Quadra Island author and expedition leader Philip Stone has brought these two volumes to life.

Weaving the colourful descriptions

of the characters and the unforgiving but spectacular landscape, with the expedition photographs, Stone has crafted two books that tell two stories spanning a hundred years.

Strathcona 1910 Discovery Expedition and Strathcona 2010 Centennial Expedition are both engaging reads, dramatically illustrated by photos from each of the expeditions. They are perfect for those that cherish our parks and history.
