The recent windstorm played havoc with the local fi shing scene last week but hopefully anglers will get a break and get out on the local lakes and streams. Speaking with Bruce Bolton from Tyee Marine in Courtenay, fi shing the lower lakes has been ok. Wolf, Maple and Spider are fi shable with open water, and higher elevation lakes are covered in snow. Steelhead fi shing has been good on the Gold River and many anglers will be heading out to the Oyster and Stamp rivers.
I recently attended the Campbell River Salmon Foundation dinner and dance and auction and was delighted to see a number of people that are supporting the works of this organization. I spoke with Campbell River Salmon Foundation Chairman Mike Gage and the amount of money raised to support salmon will be announced shortly. One of the live
auction items was a rainbow trout carved from wood done by local artist Jerry Strelioff. There were a number of prizes displayed on the tables for the silent auction and Brittany James mingled with the crowd selling raffl e cards for a chance to win a fi shing rod and reel. At the Freshwater Marina in Campbell River, the shed got damaged by the wind along with some damage to some boats. There is a closure of shellfi sh harvesting in the Rebecca Spit/Hyacinth Bay/Heriot Bay area relating to a spill from a hydro transformer during the recent storm. Since 1995, William Van Orden has been making replicas of fi sh
and other marine critters found along Canada’s west coast. He has developed a unique technique for creating extremely accurate renditions of sea life. This artist from Quadra Island has his works on display at Impressions Custom Framing in Campbell River.
Last Saturday, Stella Chalupiak and Bonnie Dielschneider were looking
after the fi shing table at the Antique and Junk Sale at the Willow Point Lions Hall in Campbell River.

Social networking sites have seen a dramatic increase in users, as well as a corresponding rise in fraudsters using such networks to rip people off. BBB warns social network users of all ages to be cautious and limit the types of private and personal information that is posted online.
“Your family is ready to head out of town for a week of vacation. You’ve arranged for the post offi ce to hold your mail and a neighbor to feed the cat, but who else knows your home will be vacant?” says Rosalind Scott, Executive Director of the BBB of Vancouver Island. “It’s possible hundreds or thousands of people might know, depending on the personal information your family members have posted on social
networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or MySpace.”
Social networking sites provide a great opportunity for people to connect with friends, share photos and videos, and generally keep people up-to-date on what is going on in their various social circles.
But many people using social networking sites (especially children and teenagers) do not fully understand the implications of posting personal information, photos and comments.
Some users routinely share information about their families, where they live, go to school, when they are on vacation, birthdates and other details that can compromise the privacy and safety of a household or
individual. “Parents,
grandparents, relatives and friends all need to understand the dangers that lurk online. We need to talk about and monitor these dangers, in order to protect the ones we love,” says Scott. “Identity theft and fraud initiated online are problems that are not going away anytime soon.
“We need to be vigilant, keep educated and empower one another to protect ourselves.”
● Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to keep children, teenagers and families in general safe online:
Think about the difference between sharing and over-sharing – While social networking
is about sharing photos, thoughts and experiences, you should never share personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, bank account numbers, passwords or Social Insurance Numbers. Also think about what constitutes inappropriate photos or language and be aware that while you may be able to delete them—you can never fully take them back.
“Never talk to strangers” applies online too – One of the fi rst rules we teach our kids is to never talk to strangers; remind them that the rule holds true when online. And it should apply to adults as well. Even though chatting with a stranger online can seem harmless, the relationship can
evolve and grow until the stranger has earned your trust—and can then exploit it.
Use strict privacy settings – Social networking sites let users determine whom they want to share information with. Be sure to restrict access to your profi le so that only friends or users in safe networks can view it.
Keep the channels of communication open – Let your kids know that you are always ready to talk if they are ever threatened, bullied or feel uncomfortable about an experience they had online.
For more tips on protecting yourself from becoming a victim of fraud visit vi.bbb.org.

CUMBERLAND — Florence Bell is a busy woman.
“I don’t have to be busy but I just am, and if I’m well enough to do it, I do it,” the bright-eyed 82-year-old said with a laugh.
Bell is a member of the Cumberland Senior Lamplighters Old Age Pensioners Organization, the Coal Creek Historic Park Advisory Committee, the Cumberland Museum and Archives and the Comox Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians.
While this may already sound like a full plate, Bell is also involved in other events and initiatives in the Comox Valley
— for example, she co-ordinated the entertainment for the Cumberland Heritage Fair in February.
Bell’s family moved to the Minto Road area of the Comox Valley when she was four.
She has remained here for much of her life since then, and has always had an interest in social and political issues.
“I’ve never joined a political party but I am political,” said Bell. “I support issues politically, too.”
Bell joined the Council of Canadians — a citizen’s organization aimed at protecting Canadian independence — back in the early ’90s, before there was even a Comox Valley
Chapter.While she doesn’t
make it to all the meetings anymore, Bell still calls around within the group to circulate messages, which member Gwyn Frayne said helps out immensely.
And she noted Bell’s great personality.
“She’s been wonderful to work with, I have to say that, and she is always so upbeat and she is a hard worker,” said Frayne.
Bell also petitions various levels of government on various issues through her involvement in the Cumberland Senior Lamplighters.
“We have the right to petition the government on social issues, senior issues,
and we do every year,” said Bell. “We fi ght for...senior’s medical rights. Just you know, daily living – housing issues for seniors.”
The Coal Creek Historic Park Advisory Committee is an organization that’s close to Bell’s heart as it commemorates Japanese and Chinese workers in Cumberland.
Bell said she grew up alongside many Japanese during her school years and they were not treated well, according to Bell.
The organization works “to honour those workers that were not honoured in their day; they were really dishonoured in a lot of cases,” said Bell.
She also puts in time at the
Cumberland Museum and Archives, sitting on the board and acting as a tour guide at the museum.
“I do a lot of tours,” said Bell. “I always do the basement tours down in the mine tunnel because I like that.”
Bell has always been a busy woman; she raised six kids, and helped raise two of her grandkids.
In total, she has 11 grandchildren and fi ve great-grandkids.
At the age people generally are retiring — 67 — Bell got a job cleaning cabins out at Critter’s Cove.
She worked there for 10 years — until she was 77.
Bell said she has no plans to slow down any time soon.
