After you receive a therapeutic massage, there are many way to get the most from your treatment and extend all the great benefits massage can offer. Most often, your Registered Massage Therapist will recommend home care suggestions – if not, you should certainly ask.
One easy way to help your body perform its best following a treatment can be summed up with just one word: water. Staying hydrated after a treatment is extremely important, as your body
loses a lot of water during a massage. Maintaining optimal hydration levels after your treatment will help detoxify and flush tissues.
Once hydrated, a little hydrotherapy is the next best step – using heat and cold according to your specific needs. Ice packs, heating pads, epsom salts bath, hot and cold foot soaks, hot tubs and steam
saunas are all great home care tools to enhance tissue healing when used appropriately. Ask your therapist to suggest hydrotherapy options that are appropriate for you. Next comes the part that most of us overlook or under-perform: stretching. Stretching is very important post-treatment; after your muscles have been released from tension, stretching helps re-lengthen them, increase your range of motion and create a more balanced resting position for your muscles.
Your Registerred Massage Therapist may also suggest foam rolling, which can help reduce muscle adhesions after and in between treatments. Foam rollers are great for larger areas and muscles groups; for smaller muscles a tennis ball can be used. After your next treatment, don’t forget to ask your therapist how to get the most from your massage with a few home care suggestions. This care is often neglected but accounts for a large part of your treatment success over the long term.

A unique tasting experience has come to the North Island and food lovers will be delighted.
Signature Oil & Vinegar specializes in fresh, high quality extra virgin olive oils and Italian balsamic vinegars.
When you walk into the shop at 2060 Guthrie Rd, in Comox, you will be greeted by 37 gleaming stainless steel containers called fustis, each with a different product available for tasting before purchase.
“That’s the only way you really know what you’re getting,” says co-owner Lisa Whitmore. Olive oil, it seems, is not created equally. When Whitmore and her business partner, Sigrid Lees, went to Oakland, California to study the olive oil industry, they were stunned to learn a significant percent of what is available in grocery stores does not meet the standard for authentic extra virgin olive oil.
Unlike wine, which improves over time, olive oil loses its health benefits and flavour within a year, even if the bottle has never been opened. The date on bottles in grocery stores is the date the product was bottled, not the date the olives were pressed. Signature is bringing in fresh olive oil twice a year from seven different countries, including Italy, Australia, and Chile. Each of the oils is subject to a full chemical and sensory analysis and nothing but the highest quality product is shipped.
The aim of the new tasting bar is to change the way consumers understand the benefits of olive oil through accurate information, tastings, and education on why fresh is always best.
Sampling these products is much like wine tasting. There are substantial differences in character between the different kinds of olives. The staff at Signature can guide you in pairing the
right oil to the correct balsamic. All of the vinegars are organic, made in Modena, Italy, and barrel aged up to 18 years.
“The blackberry/ginger dark balsamic paired with Persian Lime infused olive oil is amazing on spinach salad,” says Lisa. The products can be used in everything from marinades to pasta sauces. Their philosophy is fresh plus natural leads to delicious.
The prices are reasonable with a 200ml bottle at $12 and a 375ml at $18.
“This is an everyday product,” says Sigrid. “We don’t want to be a special occasion boutique. We want to be your next stop after the bakery or the grocery store.”
The new shop has been open less than a month, but plans to expand into evening tasting events and olive oil 101 sessions. The tasting bar is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There are a number of shing guides that work in the Campbell River area from May to October and some shing guides often relocate to other areas of the province to work. Painters Lodge is the largest employer of guides in the area and some of the guide’s log countless hours on the water catching sh for their clients. Last year the shing was great and this year another exceptional shing season is expected.
Precipitation is needed in the area and the higher water will have trout moving in the Campbell,Oyster,Salmon and Quinsam rivers.A great river to sh is the Elk and when the
sh are in the pools the anglers will be gathering and dry y shing will start in May.
The trout can be sluggish this time of year in local lakes but when the weather warms most pothole lakes sh well. South of Courtenay Spider lake is a destination not to miss in the spring. Higher elevation lakes are still frozen over. Smaller lakes can be shed on a regular basis and a few to name are Echo, Snakehead and Mirror lake. Mirror lake can be a fun spot to sh but there is little access to this spot.

The Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society (VIMSS) has awarded six Vancouver Island athletes with travel grants for the 2013/14 winter season. These grants help to offset the costs associated with traveling off-island for advanced training and competition. In this way, VIMSS seeks to nurture local emerging athletes and
help prepare them for provincial, national and international competition.
The following athletes were awarded VIMSS grants for Winter 2013/14: Teal Harle, Freestyle Ski (Campbell River), Mei Pond, Freestyle Ski (Nanaimo), Avalon Wastenays, Nordic Ski (Campbell River), Thomas Bergvinson, Slopestyle Snowboard (Courtenay), Mel
Pemble, Para Alpine Ski (Victoria), and Maja Nymann, Alpine Ski Racing (Campbell River).
“These grants will especially be useful this winter season as the athletes have had to travel even more this winter due to the lack of snowfall on Vancouver Island”, said VIMSS Chair Karen Bonell. “We wish all of the Vancouver Island
athletes success in their competitions.”

The B.C. government wants to keep the 50-year-old Columbia River Treaty with the U.S. and recalculate the power, flood control and other benefits it provides.
Energy Minister Bill Bennett announced the decision Thursday to stick with the treaty and try to convince the U.S. government it is a fair deal. B.C. gets “downstream benefits” worth between $100 and $300 million a year from the treaty, and the U.S. has suggested that is too much.
“We believe, with all due respect to the U.S., that if all of the benefits in the U.S. are identified and valued, that in fact Canada probably does not receive enough,” Bennett said Thursday.
“There hasn’t been a major flood in the U.S. since the Canadian dams were constructed,” Bennett said. “Before the Canadian dams were constructed, there were some horrible floods causing loss
of life and billions of dollars of damage. So the treaty was negotiated 50 years ago on the basis of producing power and controlling floods.”
The treaty has no expiry date, but it contains a 10-year termination clause that can be invoked by either country.
The U.S. State Department has the final say on whether it will continue the treaty or give notice to withdraw by 2024.
Officials at the Portland-based Bonneville Power Administration have recommended a “modernized framework that
balances power production, flood risk management, and ecosystem-based function as the primary purposes addressed in the treaty, while also meeting other congressionally authorized purposes of the U.S. project, such as irrigation and navigation.”
On the B.C. side, dams on the Columbia system provide about half of the province’s current electricity supply.
Bennett said he expects tough negotiations, but he is confident the treaty can be settled.
“Yankee trader is an expression that I’m
familiar with,” Bennett said. “They’ve always done very well on the softwood agreement it seems to me, so I’m not expecting an easy ride
or anything. “But the history of
the treaty is that the two countries have collaborated very well.”

Well, lookie here.
One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion.
That’s defi nitely not democracy in action.
The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offl oad the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.
Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected offi cials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board.
That’s gotta tell you something.
Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.
What’s going on here?
Email Christy Clark at [email protected] or call 250-387-1715. For more info, visit RethinkItBC.ca. #RethinkItBC.
This Message is brought to you by:
While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

For the fifth annual Dine Around the Comox Valley, those looking for a special night out can explore the $37 menus at five area restaurants, including Avenue Bistro, Bisque, Locals, Prime Chophouse & Wine Bar, and The Breakwater at Kingfisher Oceanside Resort.
Each menu includes a choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert for $37, with options ranging from ling cod to cordon bleu, and water buffalo bourguignon to seared albacore tuna.
The menus offer guests the opportunity to explore unique pairings of dishes, both between courses, and on their plates.
“The shorter winter days lead to romantic and warm winter
nights, especially when you add an amazing three-course meal into the mix,” says Sandra Viney of Avenue Bistro. “For anyone looking to treat that special someone to a delicious meal, Dine Around is definitely the time that provides the best value for their dollar.”
As an added bonus for this year’s Dine Around, two contests are offering participants the chance to win big.
Anyone who completes a survey after visiting a participating restaurant is entered to win the prize of dining out for the year, which includes 12, $50 gift certificates to restaurants throughout the Comox Valley.
And, anyone who signs up for the
Discover Comox Valley newsletter will be entered to win a night at the Best Western PLUS: The Westerly Hotel & Convention Centre, a bottle of Coastal Black

■ Report your income: If you earned income in 2013, you need to file a tax return.
■ Turning 19: Even if you earned no income in 2013, if you turn 19 before April 2015, you
should file a return because you will qualify for the GST/HST credit. But you have to file before you can receive this benefit.
■ Yes, NETFILE: This will be the first year first-time filers (other than immigrants) will be allowed to file using the Canada Revenue Agency’s NETFILE system.
■ Keep your receipts: A good rule of thumb is if you think it could be a tax deduction, keep the receipt and find out later. Trying to find or replace receipts later can be challenging. Remember, charitable donations, medical expenses and some transit passes are tax deductions.

Some tips for submitting your first tax return
■ Understand what you are claiming: Lots of people will offer tax advice but not all of it is true. You can only deduct employment expenses under specific circumstances. Make sure you do enough reading to understand what you can and can’t claim. And if you are unsure, you can always ask.
■ Look to the future: You may not be able to contribute too much to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) right away but you should make sure you report income and start building contribution room. This means you will be able to make larger deposits once you start earning more money.
■ Tax Free Savings: You do not report your deposits into a Tax Free Savings Account on
your tax return. Money earned in a Tax Free Savings Account is not taxed on your return but make sure you understand the withdrawal rules so you don’t overcontribute.
