COURTENAY — Our Story: A History looks at St. George’s United Church’s long history in Courtenay, but it also highlights the church’s current work in the Comox Valley.

“The church has been a very important part of the community throughout its history … and it has played a significant role in the life of the Valley in many, many ways,” says 100th anniversary book committee member and book editor Pat Brandon.

St. George’s was built after Joseph McPhee donated three lots of land on Fifth Street in 1912 for the church site; by Dec. 28, 1913 the church was opened. Needing more space, the current land at Sixth Street and Fitzgerald Avenue was purchased in 1941 with the plan in mind to move the existing building over to the new site.

A basement was dug out, but because of the Second World War, the project was put on hold until 1946. According to the book, the building move was completed with so much care that there was “neither a crack in the plaster nor a sound from the bell tower.”

Brandon’s husband Ray was the church’s minister from 1970 to 1992, and Brandon herself has been an integral part of the church ever since the

Brandon family moved here in 1970. Still, Brandon says she was surprised at how much St. George’s has contributed to the community after she researched for the centennial book.

“When I delved into the history and the present activity, I had no idea — and I’ve been going to that church for quite a while — I had no idea it was so extensive,” says Brandon. “For me, the most significant part was what we’re doing now, and that’s about the Sonshine Club, and about the Pastor’s Pantry and other smaller groups that supplement that as well.

“We’re still very,

very active in the

community and that’s the part I was surprised at.”

The Sonshine Club serves hot lunches to between 150 and 200 Comox Valley homeless citizens five days a week — at least 30,000 meals per year are served, according to the book.

From the United Church Women’s fundraising efforts, to various youth groups and programs, to community outreach

initiatives, St. George’s has always strived to improve the community, says Brandon.

“We were the genesis for the day-care centres in the Valley, which I think is a really significant thing because they

met (at St. George’s) for a number of years, and then they bought their own facility and began to branch out,” continues Brandon. “Now, there are 17 day-care centres in the Valley.”

While most of the � shing boats have been pulled out of the water and are winterized and stored away until April or May, many locals are heading south for a vacation with � shing in mind. Don Larsen and Rob Harris are relatively newcomers to � shing have been having fun � shing in Mexico. Two guys � shing for four hours in Mexico is far less expensive than � shing in Campbell River. In Mexico the day � shing is around 200 dollars for the guys, and they had lots of action. This past summer the anglers from Campbell River were on a trip with Larry Stefanyk to Kamloops and Rob was featured on the � shing magazine put out by Larry. Many of the � shing guides who work the north � shing lodges are back in Campbell River for the winter and will return to the north in May and stay and guide all summer long and some will � sh right until the season end. Doug Canton will � sh every day and will be heading back for another guiding season in 2014. We had our � rst snow of the season last Thursday and soon steelhead � shing will

pick up. Anglers will be headed to the Gold, Nimpkish, Salmon and Oyster rivers, most say it’s a little early but January the destination for the most is the Gold. John Drewett from London England is a visitor on the Gold and � shing will be done again in the New Year.Doug Canton

When people find out I’m a yoga instructor, they often remark, “Oh, I should do that; I keep hearing how good it makes you feel.”

This is often followed by, “But I’m so inflexible; I don’t think I’d be good at yoga.”

This is akin to saying, “I want to make music on the guitar, but I’m not going to take lessons because I don’t know how to play.”

Ten college students at the University of

California at Davis recently participated in a study of the effects of taking yoga classes four times a week for eight weeks. Measurements were taken of muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, lung function and other parameters. What the study found was that flexibility increased by as much as 188 per cent.

You might be

thinking, “Sure, those were young people, and they were doing

four classes a week! My body is too stiff to respond like that.”

However, what I observe in my classes is this: when people commit to attending regularly,

their bodies change, no matter what their age. They DO become more flexible. That flexibility helps them shoulder-check while

driving, it makes it easier to tie their shoes and other activities simply become more enjoyable. All in all, they feel younger.

Perhaps you’re hesitating to attend a yoga class because you think you might be asked to do more than your body is capable of. A good teacher, however, will emphasize that you breathe deeply, move slowly and pay attention to what feels appropriate for your body. This will help you stay within your

comfortable and safe range of motion. So yes, you can do yoga if you’re not flexible. In fact, limited flexibility is a great reason to try yoga in the first place!

And if you stay with it, you might be amazed at the transformations that you experience.

While most of the � shing boats have been pulled out of the water and are winterized and stored away until April or May, many locals are heading south for a vacation with � shing in mind. Don Larsen and Rob Harris are relatively newcomers to � shing have been having fun � shing in Mexico. Two guys � shing for four hours in Mexico is far less expensive than � shing in Campbell River. In Mexico the day � shing is around 200 dollars for the guys, and they had lots of action. This past summer the anglers from Campbell River were on a trip with Larry Stefanyk to Kamloops and Rob was featured on the � shing magazine put out by Larry. Many of the � shing guides who work the north � shing lodges are back in Campbell River for the winter and will return to the north in May and stay and guide all summer long and some will � sh right until the season end. Doug Canton will � sh every day and will be heading back for another guiding season in 2014. We had our � rst snow of the season last Thursday and soon steelhead � shing will

pick up. Anglers will be headed to the Gold, Nimpkish, Salmon and Oyster rivers, most say it’s a little early but January the destination for the most is the Gold. John Drewett from London England is a visitor on the Gold and � shing will be done again in the New Year.Doug Canton
