Worldwide, one in every five adults suffers from chronic pain.

If you’ve ever been in pain for more than a week or so, you know how debilitating it is. Even small activities become a challenge, and by the end of the day you feel worn out. Pain relief medication helps, but could have deleterious

effects over the long term.

Some healing modalities, such as

acupuncture or massage, may provide relief. Perhaps less well known, though, is that the right kind of yoga can also be very helpful in reducing or eliminating pain. Various

studies have shown that yoga and

meditation can reduce back pain, as well as that of arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia and other conditions.

Simply learning deep breathing techniques in a gentle yoga class will induce relaxation and release endorphins — the body’s natural painkillers. Additionally, yoga’s mindfulness practices help reduce the emotional distress associated with pain,

which can change how the pain is perceived.

As yoga also helps participants become more self-aware, they begin to notice smaller sensations and learn to move with conscious intention.

At the end of class, a participant will often remark that their headache disappeared or their back pain improved.

The simple act of attending a yoga class for an hour or two sends a signal to the

body that it’s okay to rest, it’s okay to breathe more slowly and it’s okay to let go of timelines and pressures.

Tension begins to melt out of tight muscles, and the resulting relaxation can last for hours after the class ends.

If you’re dealing with chronic pain and have “tried everything” except yoga, consider finding a very gentle class or some one-on-one

therapeutic sessions. The effects could be a pleasant surprise – and relief.

Catherine Reid is a Registered Yoga Teacher.

Motorizing your window treatments isn’t just about convenience for those hard to reach windows – it’s also about looking awesome.

That’s right – awesome. How cool are you going to be when you can raise and lower your window shades at the touch of a button? Remember that scene in that movie about the rich and famous superstars in California? Yeah, that could be you. Awesome. Motorizing your window coverings and becoming super-awesome (I just upped it a notch) is easy to do. Here’s how:

1. Call Budget Blinds and book a free, in-home consultation.

2. Choose from several awesome motorized shades (don’t worry, we can help.)

3. Have a sandwich and watch the football game, or a glass of

chardonnay and a rerun of Desperate Housewives. Please, no Jersey Shore.

4. Budget Blinds returns and installs said motorized shades and hands you the remote control – otherwise known as “the Power.”

5. Be awesome. Sit back and impress your friends and neighbours; bask in the newfound respect of your teenage children; watch as your dog obeys all of your commands because it can smell your awesomeness.

In all seriousness, motorized shades come with other benefits besides awesomeness. Perhaps you have a shade that’s way up on the second storey, floating high over a vaulted ceiling. Maybe there’s something physically preventing

you from reaching one of your windows. Or maybe you just need an outlet for your midlife crisis besides a sports car or an ill-

advised affair with the pool boy.

There’s really nothing arduous about it. There’s no wiring required inside your

walls, as the unit is radio-controlled and battery operated. You won’t need an electrician and, unless you want a set-up like the Jetsons, it won’t break the bank.

So motorize a blind. Awesome awaits.

Stuart Tunheim is the owner of Budget Blinds, serving Nanaimo to Port Hardy. His team brings the showroom to your home – learn more at www.budgetblinds.com or email [email protected].

Premier Christy Clark wants rising municipal pay rates to be front and centre in November elections around B.C., and that’s why her government set off a storm at the annual local government convention by releasing an unflattering comparison study with provincial pay.

In her speech to close the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention Friday, Clark told 2,000 local government delegates she is “not here to point a finger” at local governments, but she wants them to do the hard work of negotiations as the province did in the

recent dispute with B.C. teachers. A study by Ernst & Young was released days before the convention by the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. It calculated that unionized municipal staff received pay increases of 38 per cent between 2001 and 2012, twice as much as unionized provincial staff, and ahead of inflation of 23 per cent during the same period.

“I think it’s a legitimate issue to be discussed because it’s taxpayers who pay for these compensation costs,” Clark told

reporters after her speech. “Further than that we’ll wait until we have new municipal councils to speak with, and then we can talk about the next steps.”

NDP local government critic Selina Robinson said the report, prepared and leaked without notice to the UBCM, “hit a group of people over the head with a two-by-four.”

Robinson also objected to Clark urging B.C. residents to choose peaceful accommodation, saying the long and bitter strike that shut schools for five weeks is a poor example.

In her speech, Clark emphasized the importance of resource development, an apparent reference to the battle led by Burnaby against the

proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline. Clark announced the appointment of Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett to lead a rural advisory committee to give rural communities a “fair share” of resource development. She used the example of Princeton, a community of 3,000 that generates $750 million in economic activity from forestry and the Copper Mountain Mine.

Clark admitted the government has “fallen behind” on a promise to extend broadband Internet to small communities, and vowed to renew efforts for communities such as Granisle, where fibre optic lines stopped just short of the community.

Clark wants municipal pay to be an election issue
