A lower Canadian dollar and a slow recovery in the U.S. and around the world bode well for the B.C. economy in the next two years, a new report from the Business Council of B.C. says.

“The U.S. economy is gaining ground, the Eurozone is out of recession, and Asia, particularly China, continues to expand at a robust clip,” said executive vice president Jock Finlayson as he released the BCBC economic outlook

report Tuesday. “The weakening of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar will also help

lift B.C.’s export of goods and services to the U.S., prompt more U.S. travellers to come to B.C., and serve as

a headwind to cross-border shopping.”

The report forecasts improvement in U.S. demand for lumber and other building materials, wood pulp and even natural gas, which has fallen to historic lows with a surge of shale gas production around North America.

Recovery of the struggling B.C. coastal forest industry was echoed at last week’s Truck

Loggers’ Association convention.

“I’ve got a desk covered with resumes of people who work in the oil patch,” said Don Banasky, operations manager at CopCan Contracting Ltd. and FallTech Logging in Nanaimo and vice-president of the TLA.

Banasky said there are openings for road building, driller-blaster, grader and excavator operators

in his operations, and some employees at remote oil and gas developments are anxious to work closer to home.

The BCBC report holds out hope for a B.C. government that has seen its much-advertised jobs plan fizzle in the past two years.

“Following essentially no net employment growth in 2013, we see the B.C. job market recovering

in the coming year,” the report says. “Growing exports, higher non-residential construction outlays and some increase in consumer spending will translate into greater demand for working and more hiring by B.C. businesses.”

The report forecasts that two liquefied natural gas processing plants and pipelines to supply them will begin in 2015.

Paul Taylor, former president of the Insurance Corporation of B.C., has resigned as chair of the ICBC board after a year and a half in that position.

ICBC issued a brief statement

saying Jatinder Rai, a member of the board of directors since 2008, has been appointed interim chair.

A spokesman declined further comment on the reason for Taylor’s

departure.“Mr. Taylor was

appointed chair in July 2012 and his leadership has helped guide the corporation through challenging times, including the downsizing and restructuring of the company in late 2012,” the ICBC statement said.

ICBC imposed a 4.9 per cent rate increase for basic vehicle insurance in November, citing increasing injury claims and higher payouts. That followed an 11 per cent increase in basic insurance rates in 2012.

ICBC cut 260 positions in 2012 after an audit of its operations showed its management ranks had increased 41 per cent between 2007 and 2011.

Taylor resigned as president of ICBC in May of 2008.

B.C. environment ministry biologists are asking the public to

watch and report bat sightings this winter, as they try to track a

disease that has killed millions of bats in eastern and central Canada and the U.S.

White Nose Syndrome is a fungal disease that kills bats during their winter hibernation period.

It is believed to have been introduced to North America and to spread primarily through bat to bat

contact. No cases have been

reported in western North America so far.

British Columbia biologists are working to understand how to protect bats from the syndrome and how to help populations should the disease arrive.

If you see bats flying during the day, dead

or dying bats or the location of winter bat roosting sites, provincial biologists are asking you to report sightings at 250-387-9500.

More information on B.C. bats and White Nose Syndrome, see the “current issues” section at  www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/wldhealth/.

Do you feel pulled in too many directions?

Are your nerves strung tighter than a tennis racquet?

Do you rush around from morning to night barely remembering to breathe?

While some stress is normal and healthy, when it’s out of balance it can wear you down.

One natural, proven way to relieve stress that thousands of busy people have already discovered, is yoga.

“But I don’t have time for yoga!” you

might respond. Just as our vehicles require regular oil changes to prevent costly breakdowns, so do our bodies require routine preventative maintenance.

As a wise person once said, “we can take the time to be sick, or we can take the time to be well.”

Caring for yourself with good food, social and spiritual nourishment and regular, enjoyable

exercise accomplishes for your well-being what an oil change

does for your car.

Hopefully, you already have some of those things in place. But if your life feels out of alignment, yoga can help you re-balance.

A beginner’s Hatha Yoga class will involve some basic yoga postures, combined with simple breathing patterns, and

perhaps a short guided meditation. You’ll be surprised at how relaxed and peaceful you feel after just an hour or so.

You might also enjoy Restorative Yoga, a style that uses items to support your body as you relax in different positions, mostly on the floor. Of course, if the thought of lying quietly sounds challenging because it’s just too different from your high-speed life, a beginner’s class with more movement might be more suitable.

Some styles of yoga are stimulating rather than calming, so if stress relief is your main motivation, do a bit of research before signing up.

The right class will help you breathe more deeply and leave the studio smiling.

Catherine Reid is a Registered Yoga Teacher, offering a variety of classes in the Comox Valley. To experience the rich health benefits of yoga, call 250-898-8414 or visit www.catherinereid.ca

Part One

I wish for you all a healthy and vibrant 2014.

To that end I will continue to educate you as much as possible on ways you can take charge of your health. My last article generated a lot of comments and quality of supplements is certainly a related topic.

Patients will hear about some herb or neutraceutical in the news then bring the query to their doctors, MD’s and ND’s. ND’s (naturopathic physcians) are well versed to answer these questions whereas MD’s may not be due to their lack of nutritional education. Patients need targeted and individualized therapy and they need guidance on what is the best remedy to choose.

Here are some common questions to ask when choosing a remedy.

1. Are dietary supplements and herbs safe and effective?

a. Risk of taking dietary supplements

is very low compared to what the media would have you believe. Knowing the companies you are using and their quality control procedures

raises the confidence of both practitioner and patient that “do no harm” is being followed. There are some interactions with prescription medications but as long as the patient is being monitored these can be addressed on an individual basis. There are lots of myths out there and with the help of knowledgeable practitioners these can be dispelled over time.

2. Do I need a multivitamin?

a. Most multivitamins provide a B complex and a mixture of minerals

and anti-oxidants. I find the dosage of all of these are not adequate as you can’t fit therapeutics dosages into one capsule. Even in the face of a “healthy diet” the concern is the depletion of the soils’ nutrients so that the so called “healthy diet” does not have in fact healthy levels of adequate nutrients.

b. If a patient eats mostly organic, grows a lot of their own food, eats from the garden most of the year, and eats predominantly wild game, organic chicken and turkey and lots of wild fish, then this person is not likely to need a multivitamin. They may still need probiotics and fish oil and other certain remedies to treat their health condition but a multivitamin is generally of minimal importance.

c. What is the age and the health of the patient? If the patient is an otherwise healthy young women then she might be low in iron and minerals and may need help

with those but if the patient has high blood pressure and diabetes then they require long term specific nutrient supplementation in therapeutic dosages to make a difference. In this case magnesium is a common deficiency and the amount required is not found in a multivitamin.

d. What was the health of the mother during pregnancy? To determine requirements for children I look at the mother and the lifestyle of the family. Many youngsters are very depleted by their early teen years.

e. What are you looking for in a multivitamin? The dosage of the B complexes should

be upward of 50mg per capsule and selenium should be 100mcg. Calcium and magnesium should be several hundreds of milligrams. This is where this becomes impossible to put into a single multivitamin so I suggest a hefty B complex in addition to a good dose of minerals including the above.

I suggest what I

call a “Foundation for Health” to patients and their families. A lot more people are taking charge of their health as they want to stay out of hospitals and avoid drugs and surgery. This is our important

role as naturopathic physicians.

Dr. Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.DrPincott.com

CAMPBELL RIVER’S ECONOMY IS ON THE REBOUND!Hello 2014! In just a few short years our economic situation in Campbell River has done a 180 degree turn and things are just getting started. Look at what’s happening in our city these days and we still haven’t broken ground on the new hospital and Hydro projects. Construction is booming and we’re just getting started!

Just a few short years ago our situation was much different. Our Mill shut down, logging was affected by the stock market crash, as was the world’s economic situation. Things were very bleak back then. Many of our citizens fell on hard times and did what they could to make it through to the next day. If this sounds like what you, or your family, have experienced, and you are concerned with how that may have affected your ability to purchase your next vehicle, we may be able to help. Whether you are a First Time Buyer or a Last Time Buyer, our team can help guide you!

Henry (Ford) Albrecht and Aron Welsh are two Automotive Financial Brokers with a combined experience of 25 years in the business. Together they have been assisting and helping customers with their transportation needs even in the face of financial hardships.

Page 10: North Island MidWeek, January 29, 2014

10 | NORTH ISLAND MIDWEEK | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2014

I, Barbara Balon, am writing on behalf of my mother, Doris Page who recently purchased an Iron Man bed with a recovery foam mattress from your store. First of all we would like to thank you for the wonderful service. I had phoned all over to the different furniture stores in town looking for a single bed where the head and feet raise and lower and a good mattress. They needed to have one in the store and we needed it to be delivered on the same day. This, I realize is a lot to ask of any store but we were desperate.Mo mom hasn’t had a good night’s sleep going on two or three years. She is up about every half hour going to the washroom. We found that while sitting in an upright position during the day she could go ve ours without having to use the facility, hence we realized that when she was laying at in bed there was pressure put on her bladder. She also has an essential tremor and the only time she isn’t shaking is when she is asleep. As a result of her being up so many times at night, she was constantly exhausted and her tremor was causing her to lose a tremendous amount of weight. Your store was the only that could meet all our requirements. The Iron Man bed was purchased and I am happy to say that Mom has had the best sleep she has had for three years. Thank you all at this store for giving our mom quality back in her life. A good night’s sleep is exactly what she needed.

When you want the best, go to the BEST - MERIT HOME FURNITURE!!
