All Comox Valley students at the provincial Destination Imagination (DI) tournament qualified for the global finals.

COMOX VALLEY — Every single Comox Valley secondary student who went to the provincial Destination Imagination (DI) tournament qualified for the global finals.

“Our school district has been one of the bright lights in the province on this — it’s one of the best in Canada at this,” says Jeff Taylor, North Vancouver Island regional director for DI and Mark. R. Isfeld Secondary School principal.

This year, “we’re in the unusual, but comfortable, position to decide who’s going to go (to the global finals) because we have more than enough

people qualifying.”Nine Comox Valley

teams attended the provincial tournament Saturday at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Greater Vancouver.

Though the Comox Valley’s one elementary team didn’t qualify for the finals, Isfeld’s three teams each placed first in their categories and an Isfeld and G.P. Vanier Secondary team placed first in its category.

An all-girl Grade 8 team from Highland placed second at the middle school level, and the district also placed third in three categories.

The tournament included team challenges in one of six focus areas — scientific, technical, structural, fine arts, improvisational and

global outreach. Teams had from

September until the tournament to come up with a solution to the challenge.

Teams also had to compete in the instant challenge, which they couldn’t prepare for.

Taylor notes the Comox Valley will likely send four, as yet undecided, teams to the global finals from May 22 to 25 in Knoxville, Tenn.

The worldwide competition saw over 1,200 teams from 16 countries last year.

Although the competitions range in various skills, they all involve multiple skill sets per team, which Taylor says is one of his favourite parts of the challenges.

email: [email protected] As we approach the end of the month, � shing has picked up in many lakes and anglers are starting to get out. In Campbell River with the recent stocking of trout in Echo Lake the area was full of shore � shermen and people � shing from small boats. Maple Lake is � shing well too using worms � shed from shore or using a small black leech � y. The Quinsam River has � shed well in some of the pools and the water level and clarity has improved. The Oyster River has some nice pools with trout

and the upper regions will see more anglers in weeks to come.

Saltwater � shing has been hit and miss in most areas for salmon

� shed at Shelter Point and the Hump. Larry Stefanyk author and angler was talking to me about using small � ies and thin tippets for catching trout in this area. Larry spends a lot of time � shing the local lakes and � shes the interior lakes. Discovery Pier in Campbell River has seen little � shing action, last year Mel Adams landed a 28 pound salmon on April 20th. The Pier has a � shing culture all on its own with the locals who � sh and the tourists who come here year around. To the north of Campbell River, Roberts Lake will start to � sh well in weeks to come. The north end of the lake can be very good to � sh in mid summer and going deep with small plugs can get you a nice size trout. On Saturday, September 21st, Lorna Duncan will be having free family � shing derby with plenty of prizes being awarded for those who come out.

but there’s also an artistic or performance component,” he says, adding a team strong in math could still be out of its comfort zone with the performance aspect of a challenge and a team of extroverted artists

may struggle with the technical parts.

“So one of the really strong elements of DI that I like so much is that it brings people together who would normally probably not hang out together in a school.

“It sort of breaks down the social clique boundaries and you get a good mix of people working together.”

He also says the program helps hone important skills like “critical thinking, creative

thinking, resilience, collaboration and communication.”

Destination Imagination is a non-profit educational organization which encourages students to use 21st century learning skills.

Plantar fasciitis, which sounds like some obscure tropical disease, is actually an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick fibrous band of tissue in the bottom of the foot that runs from the heel to the base of the toes.

When placed under too much stress, the plantar fascia stretches too far and tears, resulting aggravation of the fascia and the surrounding tissues.

The tears are soon

covered with scar tissue, which is less flexible than the fascia and much more painful to walk on.

Plantar fasciitis is characterized by pain at the base of the heel.

Sometimes it can be severe enough to prevent you from walking.

Often the pain is most severe in the morning when getting out of bed.

The pain may fade for

a few minutes as you start walking, but usually gets worse

again as the day progresses.

Plantar fasciitis can be caused by many different factors.

Tight calf tendons can cause tension and pulling on the plantar fascia.

Overpronation, where the feet rotate too far inward when the foot impacts the ground, can increase the stress on the plantar fascia and cause aggravation.

Poorly fitting, or old shoes, walking all day on hard surfaces, and running too much without proper recovery time, can also contribute to the

development of plantar fasciitis.

In very mild cases the application of ice for 10 minutes every two hours, and resting to allow the plantar fascia to heal properly, may be enough to fix the problem.

One of the best ways to ice the bottom of the foot is to fill a plastic 500 ml bottle with water, and freeze it.

Apply the ice by rolling the bottle under the foot. Just don’t leave the bottle out where someone might drink the water.

More serious

cases are usually more difficult to fix. Generally, a combination of solutions to decrease the stress through the plantar fascia will allow it to heal.

These solutions may include decreasing the amount of time training, or walking on hard surfaces, getting an orthotic to correct foot position, and doing specific stretches and strength exercises to support the plantar fascia.

Taping or bracing can sometimes be used effectively to give the plantar fascia the

support it needs to heal.

A physiotherapist can help you correctly diagnose the cause of your plantar faciitis and give you suggestions to help decrease the stress through the fascia.

About 90 per cent of people with plantar fasciitis improve significantly after two months.

If the plantar fasciitis continues after a few months of conservative treatment, your doctor may inject your heel with steroidal anti-inflammatory

medications (corticosteroid). If the symptoms persist your doctor may prescribe a walking cast or a splint to wear at night.

In very rare cases, surgery is necessary to release the plantar fascia and relieve the pain.

Have you ever left a concert with a buzzing sensation or ringing in your head?

Many of us experience some form of ringing in the ears occasionally, particularly after exposure to loud noises. Usually, the effect wears off quickly and painlessly. For some people, however, this ringing occurs often, without noticeable provocation and for prolonged periods – and it can be incredibly irritating.

Tinnitus, from the Latin word for ringing, is the term used for the sound a person hears when no external sound is in fact present. This phantom noise can be constant or fluctuating, mild or severe and may vary from a low roar to a high-pitched whistle. Depending

on the person, it can also take the form of buzzing, gurgling, chirping or even music or other strange sounds.

Tinnitus is a condition rather than a disease, and its causes are numerous and varied. Excessive noise exposure, hearing loss, stress, lack of sleep, heavy

smoking, use of certain medications, too much caffeine, too much salt and head injuries are some of the more common sources.

Tinnitus itself can cause a number of secondary symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, anxiety, stress, inability to concentrate and insomnia.

Unfortunately, these symptoms can often stimulate the tinnitus even more, leading to a vicious

cycle.An estimated 90

per cent of people with diminished hearing experience tinnitus, and I’ve seen many clients about this issue. Even mild hearing loss, from which many people don’t know they suffer, can cause tinnitus. If you’re experiencing ringing or other “internal” noises, a hearing test with a trained professional is a good place to start. He or she will have the experience and knowledge to help assess your particular condition and will offer advice on how to gain partial or complete relief from this frustrating condition.

Answer: There are several ways to address crooked front teeth, but it depends on the degree of crowding. Severe crowding is often best treated with orthodontics (braces) to straighten the teeth. Moderate to mild crowding can also be treated with Invisalign, which utilizes clear trays that are custom made and move teeth gradually and gently. This can be done at your family dental offi ce.Another way to change the appearance of teeth is with composites. These are tooth-coloured resin fi llings that are bonded to repair decayed, chipped, fractured, or discoloured teeth. They can also be used to close spaces between teeth, make teeth look longer, or change the shape or colour of teeth. They usually last several years, depend on how much bonding was done and oral/biting habits.Other options include porcelain veneers and crowns. These are thin layers of porcelain that are placed and bonded to prepared teeth. They can be used in situations where one wishes to change the shape, colour, or overall appearance of his or her teeth. PORT HARDY— Charter members of a cooking outreach program jointly administered by three local social services organizations were rewarded for their dedication to the program last week when they were presented with gifts of cookware and utensils in a pre-dinner celebration at the Salvation Army’s Lighthouse Resource Centre.

The five recipients

of the full sets of cookware and utensils — Bernice Simms, Gary Coon, Aaron King, Cameron McLean and Chris Naharnie — are the “core” members of Carol’s Kitchen, a program named for the late Carol Humchitt, who helped promote the concept.

a rehab worker with Vancouver Island Health Authority. “These are our core members, but anyone who wants to come and help can sit down and eat.”

Both elegant and simple, the Carol’s Kitchen model incorporates VIHA’s community health outreach, the Salvation Army’s Lighthouse Resource Centre and the local Harvest Food Bank to ensure the community’s most needy have not only regular meals, but the means by which to prepare and enjoy them.

Participants “self-select” for the program, based on their need, said Sean Junglas, director of the Lighthouse Resource

Centre, which provides the kitchen and dining facilities.

“This fits perfectly with our mandate, since we focus on providing resources,” said Junglas. “And this is about developing life skills. We like to find ways to partner with other programs, and this is one of the ways we can do so.”

The Lighthouse Centre is actually the third home for what had been a somewhat nomadic program from its inception in late 2011. Holden directed Carol’s Kitchen first at the Sacred Wolf Friendship Centre in Thunderbird Mall, then at the VIHA-run Family Place before finding a permanent home at the Lighthouse Centre.

After he and Junglas coordinated its move to the

Lighthouse Resource Centre, the program was completed with the addition of the third member of the triumvirate, Harvest Food Bank, which went from simply a source of donated food to part of the life skills training program.

In addition to their cooking skills development, Carol’s Kitchen participants also contribute time at the food bank, where they learn about food security while giving back to the community.

“Garth said, ‘We want to start a cooking program. Can you donate any food?’” said Cheryl Elliott of Harvest Food Bank. “We said, ‘Sure, we’ll donate.’ And then (program participants) come and donate time on Friday’s at the food bank. It’s really

a win-win. It’s been awesome.”

Last week’s presentation of cookware was sprung on the core members as a surprise when they came to prepare one of their meals on cooking night at the Lighthouse Resource Centre. The gifts were given, appropriately, in the kitchen, with the smell of well-seasoned soup wafting through the room.

“It’s one of my favourite days of the week,” Holden said with a smile.

“It’s a great community partnership between three groups,” added Junglas, who handled the shopping for a procuring of the cookware. “We’re all trying to help the community, and this is our little contribution.”

comic relief on the job, why not try decapitating your boss?

A. Where the optic nerve exits the eyeball is a gap in light-sensitive retinal cells, creating a “blind spot.” You can locate your own spot by marking two X’s side by side on

a sheet of paper about three inches apart, then closing your right eye and viewing the X on the right with your left eye. Start with the paper about a foot and a half from your face, then bring it slowly toward you. At some critical distance (which you may need to “hunt” for), the left X will fall entirely on your blind spot and disappear. What good is all this? In 1996, Bello, a two-year-old Nigerian boy, was found after being abandoned at age six months and spending a year and a half with chimpanzees. “He walked by bending his legs and dragging his arms on the ground and leaped about throwing objects. So far, he has learned some human language and social behavior but still makes chimpanzee noises amid his speech.” John Ssebunya, abandoned as a two-year-old in the jungle of Uganda, was adopted by a colony of African green ververt monkeys for three years. In 1991, when a tribe took the naked boy to an orphanage, he was more adept at climbing trees than walking and chattered

like the monkeys; more recently, he has picked up some human language and now enjoys singing in a church choir. One of the best documented early cases was in 1920 when Kamala, age eight, and Amala, 18 months, were discovered in a wolves’ den in India. Both walked on all fours, ate only raw meat and kept nocturnal hours. Amala died after a year without learning any human language or gait; Kamala lived eight years, picked up a few words and learned to walk upright, though she reverted to all fours when in a hurry. When human children are found living among animals, their “foster parents” invariably try to prevent their removal.

The Needle & Arts Centre in Campbell River has arranged a special treat for Fibre Fest: a Maggie Jackson Fashion Show!

A trunk full of Maggie Jackson’s incredible garments will be modeled by customers, friends and staff from the Needle & Arts Centre at the Fibre Fest on Saturday, May 4 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Maggie Jackson is an internationally-acclaimed Irish fashion

designer and fibre artist. Jackson began creating her own patterns and designs at the age of 12.

Her entrepreneurial skills won her early notice and the coveted title of Northern Ireland’s Young Business and Professional Woman of the Year. This was followed by the Guinness Special Award for Design Excellence, and she won second place in the International

Mohair Association Competition for the most innovative ladies garments.

The Needle & Arts Centre will have Jackson’s pattern books and complete kits in the Vendor’s Mall, so these uniquely Maggie designs and patterns will be available.

The Vancouver Island Fibre Fest comes to Campbell River May 3, 4 and 5. The very full weekend starts with Friday workshops

in the afternoon, the Vendor’s Mall and an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m.

At the reception, people will have the opportunity to peek at the amazing fibre art that will be on display at the People’s Choice Gallery.

Artists will show their work and briefly tell the story of how the item came to be.

Also during the evening, students from the Sewing for Fun

program will show some of the wonderful items they have made throughout the year.

There will be time for mingling and chatting, with yummy appies courtesy of the Cooking Basics program.

Admission to the reception is by donation

Another highlight of the Fibre Fest weekend will be the demonstration mall – where a variety of non-

profit organizations showcasing their art and ongoing demonstrations every hour throughout the weekend.

Everything from quilting, weaving, spinning, knitting, Zentangle, sock knitting, needle arts and a Spin In will take place here!

Workshops are filling up so call and register now.
