Residents of Berghof, Chante- clair and two retirement villages, Onrus Manor and Kidbrooke, had to evacuate in the midnight hours of Thursday 15 January after a fire, that started in Hawston around 15:00 that afternoon, jumped across the road and spread over the moun- tain. First it spread towards Kar- wyderskraal and then later in the evening, fuelled by a gusting north- western, the inferno raged over the mountain to the Onrus side. Flames reportedly shot up as high as 30 metres, destroying all the trees and vegetation in their path. While the helicopter crew was able to water-bomb the flames, they had to stop when the light faded, which saw the ground crews then doing battle. The area was declared a Code Red as the flames, spot fires and thick smoke posed a threat to the lives and homes of these residents. Rudi Fraser, traffic chief, was in charge of the evacuation exercise. Law Enforcement and police offi- cers, and the mayor herself, went from door to door to Berghof resi- dents to tell them to evacuate. Officers, neighbours, friends and family, ambulance services and staff all helped to alert and evacuate residents of the two retirement vil- lages, who were accommodated at the Dutch Reformed Church in On- rus (Onrus Manor residents), and the residents of Kidbrooke at the United Church in Hermanus. News of the fire threat was also shared and spread on social media networks. Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie visited the control room and fire scenes to evaluate the situation, and together with a trau- ma counsellor, also visited the evacuees at both churches between 01:30 and 02:30, showing support, sharing words of comfort and ex- plaining why the decision had been taken to evacuate them, and that they would have to spend the night under the church roofs. “The decision by all the role play- ers was not taken lightly, and was made to safeguard your health and safety, while the fire department teams do their job. We have also called for back-up from the fire- fighting teams from Cape Town and they are on the scene,” the mayor explained. “Although this is not the most comfortable night for you, do get to know and love each other, and share this moment. And be assured, we know we are paraat.” But if it wasn’t for the rain that started falling from 03:00, the mountain fire would have spread towards Hermanus. By 05:00 the fire was under control, leaving a scorched mountain and smouldering patches here and there, and the evacuees could re- turn to their homes by daybreak on Friday. There was no loss of life or damage to property reported, nor were any of the fire fighters in- jured. The cause of the fire is being investigated. RAGING FIRE: Dr Wolf Barth from Chante-clair wants to congratulate all the securityforces who worked excellently and together.“We heard about the measures in the com-munity hall and that was great. They evenhad food, not only for the people, but alsofor dogs and cats. Berghof in first lineof fireOn Thursday 15 January the Emergency Servi-ces of the Overstrand Municipality were put tothe test. As residents of Berghof Estate we werein the front line. When the blaze was noted it wason the far side of the mountain.
A few hours later it was obvious that it wasgoing to be driven by strong northwesterliesacross the crest of the mountain, and the Emer-gency Services started showing a presence.Fire engines, police vehicles, a tree felling
team, and traffic police appearing to knowexactlywhat their roles were.We were warned at about 21:00 that we might
need to evacuate, and to prepare to take out es-sential items and animals. At 23:00 a knock atthe door requested us to evacuate. At all times therewasnopanic, andwe realised
that mock exercises must have been performedseveral times in advance to prepare for the realthing. Eventually thewind direction changed, andrain arrived earlier than expected and starteddousing the flames. We were able to return toour home shortly. Well done, Overstrand Emer-gency Services.

Wat my in besonder opgeval

The relation-ship we have with wineis like a friendship. Themore we put in the morewe get out. And to methe wines most worthy ofprolonged friendship arethose that tell the story ofplace at a point in time, not just the story ofgrape variety.”
Around 250 guests, made up of family friends and cus-tomers, enjoyed the 2013 Pinot Noir and the just re-leased 2014 Chardonnay with local crayfish and homeprepared mushroom risotto and abalone risotto, alongwith a selection of salads and cheeses.

Wonderful birdlife with water feeder bottlesWith reference to the letter in last week’sissue, “Is Banting for the birds?”In 2006 we saw these bottles for the first
time at the Hospice Care Centre in Hu-mansdorp.Godfried Potgieter started them to keep
the patients busy – doing somethingwhileearning some money as well.We bought a bottle and also got talking
to Pottie. My husband and Pottie startedperfecting these Sunbird Water Feederbottles.Sincethenalovelypieceofartwithwire,
tomato sauce bottle (All Gold), extendedtops, were made by them. When Grootbos had the big veld fires a
couple of years ago, we were contacted tosupply waterbottles as the birds had noway of getting any water.Birds that make use of the water feeder
bottlesare theCapesugarbirds (malewithlong tail) that arrive in our gardens by theendofAugustandstayuntilmiddleFebru-ary in the Hermanus and Overberg areas. Here they have their young ones, andteach them the life skills that birds need. This is the scene with talking, fightingaround the water bottles and banting.
When the youngsters are ready, they alltake to the veld where they come from.Ourlittlesunbirdsaretheonesthatreal-
ly enjoy thewater feeders. They have longbeaks like the Cape sugar birds. The weavers have a ball with the water
– but, with the extension fitted to the top, their beaks are too short. Theywill sip thedrops dripping from the tops. The whiteeyes enjoy the same.We have never seen wagtails drinking
fromthebottles.Again, theirbeaksare tooshort.Butgive themalittlecheeseandyouwill have a visitor for life.Themossies just sit andwatch theworld
go by.The instructions supplied in the bottle
are there for a reason. Follow them, withnot toomuch sugar, sit back and enjoy ourwonderful birdlife in Hermanus.PS. We had a visit from a pea-hen (pou-
wyfie) on Sunday; she never stopped eat-ing, then had a short rest and took to theroad again. Now and then two Egyptian geese will
also comearound toask for a slice of breadand clean up all the wild bird seeds.

Baboons shot and captured near StanfordOn Saturday 10 January a mature lactatingfemale baboonwas found trapped in the Stan-ford area. Nearby were the remains of a fur-ther five baboons. All had been shot. On closeinspection the one skeleton proved to be thatof a juvenile which had been shot in the bodyareawith a shotgun, broken ribs and shot pel-lets testified to this. Also, the animal musthave suffereduntil eventually succumbingasit was found perched on a tree stump whichit must have crawled to before dying. The caged female baboon showed signs of
having been in the cage for many hours, through the heat of the day, in the full sun.The cage was a drop-door of the type farmersuse to catch porcupines. Without a doubt thefarmerwouldhaveshotherwhenheeventual-ly checked his trap.Lawenforcementwascalled inafternumer-
ous unsuccessful attempts to get help to re-leaseher, including calls theHermanusCape-Nature (closed for theweekend and no-one onstandby). But a call to Toitjie of law enforce-ment saw two officers on the scene within 20minutes.Whentheofficersreleasedthebaboonitwas
discovered that therewasababyhiding in thebushes nearby because when the baboon ranoff, she turned, ran back and scooped up a ba-by from under a bush. With the baby clinging
to her, she ran for the trees and mountains.Apparently the case and photos have been
turned over to CapeNature for investigation. If baboons are a problem for wine/fruit
farmersinthearea,surelytheycanhiresome-one to patrol, like the Voëlklip baboon moni-torsdo, tokeepbaboonsawayduring thecriti-cal time before harvest.Baboonsare seldomseen in theStanfordar-
ea and one wonders just how many are leftand how many have already been killed. If the farmer has a permit to cull, then why
is he indiscriminately trapping and killingthe baboons? There is no excuse for cruelty to animals,
whatever the reason, there is always a kindermethod of dealing with a problem.
CONCERNED ANIMAL LOVERSTANFORD
Justin Lawrence, public relations offi-cer for CapeNature, responds: CapeNatureis currently investigating the incident to buildup concrete evidence for a case. People takingthe law into their own hands and indiscrimi-nately shooting baboons will always be of con-cern to CapeNature. It remains illegal to do so,whether or not there are baboon monitors. We encourage communities to report illegal
baboon feeding by members of the public toCapeNature or the Overstrand Municipality.
Some other options forconcerned parentRe: letter “Something must be done about thebullying at school” HT/15 Jan.I feel that the letter is a misrepresentation
of Curro school and its leadership. We, as par-ents, should protect, nurture and teach ourkids toourutmost ability. We trust that teach-ers take their responsibility andduty serious-ly, which they are legally bound to and getpaid for. This is where Unhappy Parent hasto show the same trust and responsibility to-ward her children’s teachers involved.Mysonwas involved inanunfortunate inci-
dent, being a ‘newbie’ at school. I was out-raged when I finally dragged informationabout the incident out of him. I made an ap-pointment with Mr Mentz. He phoned me back and asked if he could
handle it without my involvement. I can hap-pily report that Curro Hermanus has the bestteam effort and success rate for listening tokids, handlingkidsandrestoring their self-es-teem.UnhappyParent, Iwanttoaskthatyoumay-

Willyouplease communicatewith the teachers in-volved, until they understand your concerns, the facts of what’s happening and the kids/culprits involved? Curro unfairly taintedIt is with sadness that I read the letter of aparent lambastingCurroHermanusunfairly.Firstly, Curro is not a “posh” school (Somer-set College is a posh school), it is a privateschool and a good one at that. Secondly, youdo not pay for perfection as there is no suchthing in a school, you pay for a great educa-tion, excellent curriculum, superior facili-ties, small classes, good discipline and Chris-tian ethos, etc.Bullying is found everywhere and I am sor-
ry your child had to suffer. We recently metacouplewhoremovedtheir twochildrenfromthe public school due to bullying and teasing.Curro takes such matters very seriously andthe parents of the offender are called in forjoint disciplinary action andmonitoring. Un-fortunately it sometimes takes time to workthrough. There is adequate supervisionbutno teach-
er can have eyes on every single child at alltimesandbullies inallschoolsknowthat.Try-ingtocreateahypebydrawingintheso-called“other” children leaving the school becauseof bullying is unsubstantiated, the exaggera-tion and timing of publishing is noted.Children leave for various reasons (very
seldom), often financial.AmongstMrMentz’smany qualities, the fact that he loves the chil-dren, stands out above all. Curro is a healthyschool with good growth every year. The say-ing seems to be true, that the highest treesget the most wind.I hope thismatter will be closed now. Letter

scientific approach with electronictagging monitoring their move-
ments and birth control measureswill go a long way to address theproblem in the suburbs.Keeping record of dates, numbers
and position of sightings of adultsand young will further help keepstatistics and future management.

Overstrand nie so‘bloody warm’
Bloedig warm!

Dieantwoord is seker; bloedig is so drie of vier gradebokant baie warm, sê hy.Dit is wanneer die son jou neus velaf brand as jy
dervindhet toe hy in symotor klimenaandie stuur-wiel vat. Toehet diewoordeinaook ’n lelike geword.
A high pressure system is still the cause for hot conditionsin the Overstrand. A high of 30 °C can be expected over theweekend with clouds moving in around Saturday.

Maak seker die persoon of maatskappyaan wie jy jou items verkoop, is gelisensi-
eerd.

’n Voorbeeldhiervanisvoedselpryse.

Barley farming encouraged in CaledonSouth African Breweries (SAB) recentlyintroduced theirBetterBarleyBetterBeerprogramme to invited media in Caledon.
The programme encourages and sup-ports sustainable farming practicesamongSouthAfrica’sbarley farmersbyfo-cusing on water usage reduction, im-proved carbon footprints, soil health andclearing of alien vegetation, as well as theprotection and restoration of ecosystems.
“Better Barley Better Beer (BBBB), inpartnership with the World Wildlife Fundfor Nature of South Africa (WWF-SA), isin its pilot phase in the dry land area oftheSouthernCapeand in the irrigatedbar-ley areas in the Northern Cape, and willrun for about twoyears,” said JanCoetzee, the project extension officer.
Theprogrammeinvolvesa totalof 26bar-ley producers – 15 in the dry land area and11 in irrigation, whohave either voluntari-ly opted to participate or hold importantconservation assets on their properties. These assets include endangered veld, im-portantwater catchmentareasandcriticalspecies.
Through structured engagement and ad-visory support, BBBB is aimed at empow-eringbarley farmers tounderstandandim-plement sustainable farming practices. The programme is an important elementof SAB’s global sustainable developmentframework called Prosper.
Prosper highlights tangible targets to beachieved by SAB over the next five yearsin the areas of responsible alcohol con-sumption, securing water resources, re-ducing waste and carbon emissions, supporting small enterprises, includingemerging farmers, and the support of re-sponsible and sustainable land use forbrewing crops.
Farmers with critical conservation as-sets will be supported in engaging in biodi-versity stewardship to protect and restoreecosystems.
The stewardship concept is a new wayof achieving conservation protection bycreating positive, proactive partnershipswith private landowners and conservationbodies such as WWF-SA.
SAB intends for the BBBB key metricsto be systematised into accepted industrystandards, much like the Barley Passportit introduced in 2005.
The Barley Passport contains detailedinformation on chemicals applied on theproduce and only that which is registered
will be purchased by SAB.BBBBallowsSABtobuildonitsstrategic
business objective to help grow the localbarley industry and secure its futuregrowth and sustainability. This is in linewith South Africa’s strategic plan for sus-tainableagricultureandtheDepartmentofAgriculture’s policy for sustainable devel-opment.
ThroughBBBBandothersustainableag-riculture initiatives, including the con-structionofamulti-millionrandSABMalt-ings plant in Johannesburg and its GoFarmingprogramme,whichisgearedates-tablishing and supporting emerging farm-ers, SAB intends to source more than 90%of its barley requirements from local pro-ducers.
“Having a fully-fledged and sustainablelocal barley sector means SAB can rely oncontractswith local producers for approxi-mately 93% of its brewing requirements, enablingus tohedgeagainst volatile globalcommoditymarketsand, justasimportant-ly, to keep tighter control of quality and en-sure a sustainable barley growing sector,”says Thinus van Schoor, general manager
SAB Maltings.Historically, SAB has played a pioneer-
ing role in the South African barley indus-try. It began growing barley locally morethan three decades ago, a strategic attemptby the company to become self-sufficient.Since those early days, SAB’s support forthe local barley industry has strengthenedconsiderably and the company is today re-garded as a critical role player. The strate-gic industrypartnerships it hasdeveloped,as well as its close working relationshipwith producers, is what has helped to yieldsuccesses and drive further sustainablegrowth.
“Our collaborative approach within theagricultural sector has proven to be themosteffectivemethodincreatingsustaina-ble growth, which is a key objective of anySAB investment. The existing knowledgeand skills within the industry are invalua-ble to success,” says Van Schoor.
About160000 tonsofbarleyarecurrentlygrown in the Southern Cape and a further55 000 t (64 000 t in 2013 and expanding to94 000 tons in 2014) are produced in the irri-gation areas of the Northern Cape. SABhelped establish South Africa’s barleygrowing sector in the 1970s.
The next phase of the BBBB pilot will bethe roll-out of specific guidelines to smallscale and emerging farmers in the Taungarea. These guidelines will be tailored tofocus on training the farmers rather thanauditing them.
The three pro-ducers who arepart of the pilotprogramme arefrom left MGLotter, owner ofKlipfontein, JanCoetzee, projectextension officerof South AfricanBreweries, Rich-ard Kriger, own-er of Boontjies-kraal and Josiasle Roux, ownerof Langhoogte.

NATURE MATTERS: Did youknow ...Spider wasps (familyPompilidae) are wasps that huntspiders to feed their offspring. Thefemale’s toxic sting paralyses thespider, which she then drags toher nest. There she lays a singleegg on the paralysed spider(which stays fresh since it’s stillalive). The egg hatches into a lar-va, which slowly consumes theprotein-rich spider. The larva thenpupates and eventually hatches asan adult wasp. Adult spiderwasps eat pollen.PHOTO: WWW.SCENICSOUTH.CO.ZA

We have again had some beautiful weather,so lots of golfwasbeingplayed.Wedid thoughhave a quick 21 mmof verywelcome rain lastweek, which has turned the course into abright greenparadise. This rain andwinddidhowever coincide with our ladies golf day sowe have no ladies results this week.
Men’s Day: Wednesday saw 150 gents tee-ing up in a better ball stableford format. Com-ingout on topon theEast coursewere the suc-cessful pairing of André Gouws and JohnClifford on a huge 47 points. Winning theSouth course on a respectable 48 points wereHennie Smit and John van der Plas (the les-sonswithTerryWestbrookareobviouslypay-ing off nicely), and showing everyone how toplay this game on 51 points on the Northcoursewere thepairingofFaanPretoriusandagain our secret weapon Reinhard Buhr.
There were nine 2 clubs and the ball poolpaid to 44. The best players of the day, bothon a nett 65, were Faan Pretorius and BrianCain, whom I stillmaintain has the best prac-tice swing in the club.
Saturday: We had absolutely fantasticweather and a field of 175 golfers played analliance competition which is always relax-ing. Winning the East course on +22 were Pe-ter Sulley, Brian Ridley, Rein Kelder and Jo-hann Krog. Taking top honours on the NorthcoursewereJanMulder,GerhardVisage,Hal-feeMareeandGuriVisageonasuper+19, andleading the scoring on the South course withamassive+23was the regular four-ball ofRobGeorge, Brad George, Peter Cawdry and Paulthe “club fiddler” Vorster. Well played guys.
Thanks to my four-ball, we managed a sec-ond placing on the North course and good tosee the ladies also featuring on the leaderboard, achieving a second place on the Southcourse.
Don Slade again shot below his age with agross 78. I think he is getting younger...
Best play of the day: The ever quiet JohnReynell on a nett 65.
Thankstoourgreensstaff forasupercourseanduntil nextweek keep calmand go golfing.
DOGSplay in rather difficult conditionsKleinmond - Individual Sta-bleford (Log) / 4BBB:
Conditions were difficult onTuesday as a pumping South-easterdestroyeda large fieldwhothinkthatgolf is toughenoughal-ready without interference fromthe elements and thereforeshould be played indoors.
On occasions like this, creamnormally rises to the surface, butthereareexceptions toeveryruleand “Dogsbody” scraped in by apoint with an average round byplayingslightly lessbadgolf thanusual.
“Hanging Judge Robinson”perverted the course of justice bybribing two guests to score lessthan him, but he was beaten bythe “Jolly Green Giant”, thusproving that size does matter.
The “Dachshund’sFriend”has
