Blake Albert, GM of the Windsor Hotel says: “It was a very successful season. We have been on the go since late July and have indeed expe- rienced five record months in a row. Occupan- cy rates are up 35% in that period. We did not experience the two-week dip that normally oc- curs in the beginning of December.” He says there was a marked increase in for- eign tourists in this time. “The season shows no signs of letting up un- til the end of April and the forward bookings for next season are extremely positive. “One must say ‘well done’ to the municipali- ty for coping with the influx of tourists to the town and keeping the town clean and safe. And ‘well done’ to the people of Hermanus for making us one of the most popular places to visit. Long may it last.” Celeste Scheepers, manager of the Herma- nus Tourism Bureau, says their accommoda- tion bookings peaked between 26 and 31 De- cember. She says: “This was the period a lot of enquiries came via the tourism bureau and most of the time we could not assist. Scheepers confirms that the self-catering establishments were booked up first, with B&Bs mostly booked out between 24 and 31 December. She says the visitors were “mostly local with some international guests”. There were very few walk-ins at the bureau. Most people booked and confirmed accommo- dation before arrival. Tours, activities and adventure packages that proved most popular included tree-top slides and quad biking, kayaking, shark-cage diving, and hikes, walks and activities for children. Scheepers says accommodation establish- ment owners were “very busy and exhaust- ed”. She says the town definitely looked much busier than last year. “With regards to trends, we are definitely experiencing people booking their accommo- dation on-line via the Internet. Visitors are staying for shorter periods of time and two or more families are enjoying the holiday to- gether. Mary Faure, chairperson of Hermanus Tourism says that these trends confirm that Hermanus is growing as a tourism destina- tion. “We still need to confirm final numbers, trends and prospects with the parties in- volved in tourism promotion and develop- ment, but I believe that we have had a very successful season in Hermanus and the Over- berg in general. We enjoyed superb weather and apart from the expected growth in accom- modation occupancy rates, restaurant covers and business sales, the greater Hermanus in- frastructure and support services coped ad- mirably with the demands of, what could be, a record number of tourists this season. “Our municipal support services must be thanked, especially the traffic department and the water, sanitation, electricity and refuse removal services, our local police and other security and protection services and, of course, our Hermanus residents who all dis- played utmost patience and courtesy during the welcome “siege” by tourists. “The Hermanus Tourism office staff must also be commended for their extra efforts and excellent services that underline our serious- ness in becoming one of the prime tourism destinations for local and foreign tourists to the Western Cape. “We will now evaluate and analyse the tour- ism statistics, successes and constraints of the past season in detail with those concerned. We will, as appropriate, report back to the public, through the Hermanus Times and other me- dia, on these findings and possible recommen- dations,” concludes Faure.

The KukumakrankaChroniclesOn a Sunday evening in DecemberAnina Leegot a call from an excited Frank Woodvine, elder statesman of the Hermanus BotanicalSociety and former curator of the FernkloofNature Reserve, who asked her: “Have youever seen a kukumak-ranka?”

“There are some inflower on the site that’sbeing bulldozed for de-velopment (the new On-cology centre oppositeHuis Lettie Theron).”Frank explained. “I ha-ven’t seen them in fouryearsand that is theonlyspot where they still ex-ist in Greater Herma-nus.”This phone call led to

once read an article inVeld and Flora, but hadnot seen any kukumak-ranka in flower, as theydo so extremely infre-quently and only for three to four days.Frank had also asked a few concerned peo-

ple to meet at the site the next morning to de-cide what to do about these elusive flowers.“Dr Pat Miller (member of the Hermanus

Kasregistersklingel tydensdie feesseisoenJAN-HENDRIK COETZER

sember was “chaos” vertel ’n ander groep watmoes omdraai omdat daar nie “plek vir ’nmuis” was nie.Van die rakke by verskeie supermarkte was

somsbykans leeg soos inkopers hul trollies volgelaai het, voor nuwe voorraad afgelewer enuitgepak kon word.Stephan Pretorius, eienaar van OK Mini-

soms vreeslik lank was, is kliënte baie vinniggehelp.

Alhoewel die weer laasjaar beter was, dink ek daar was vir seker meer vakansiegan-gers hierdie jaar.”Volgens Bertus van Zyl, vloerbestuurder by

selfde gedoen as laasjaar.

Sandbaai’s minitransfer station tobe phased outAt a meeting held last year, the ward com-mittee forWard 7 (Sandbaai andHemel-and-Aarde Estate) unanimously agreed that themini transfer station in Sandbaai should bedismantled and removed in its entirety.Originally instituted for the convenience

of weekenders and occupants of holidayhomeswhohadnoplace to leave theirhouse-hold refuse when departing, the mini trans-fer station never really succeeded in fulfill-ing this purpose and posed several opera-tional challenges.Amongst others, permanent residents

took to dumping builders’ rubble, gardenrefuse and redundant furniture at the site– a practice which is not only illegal but alsoattracts “scavengers” and causes “dump-ers” to be harassed by people looking forhand-outs.Seeing that the ward is being serviced by

a reliable and efficient system to removehousehold refuse and given that the minitransfer station would have to be moved inany case tomake room for a church that willsoon be erected in the vicinity, it was decid-ed that the site should be closed down alto-gether.Residents are reminded that household

refuse should only be placed out for collec-tion on the actual collection day. Those wholet their homes from time to time shouldmake arrangements with a neighbour/ac-quaintance to do so onbehalf of holidaymak-ers/weekenderswho depart prior to the offi-cial refuse collection day.Residents are reminded that only one bag

of garden refuse is allowed per householdper collection day. All excess garden refuseand other “abnormal waste” such as build-ers’ rubble, unused furniture, hazardousmaterials and discarded electronic equip-mentmust be transported to themain trans-fer station in Mbeki Street, the new parallelroad that runs betweenMount Pleasant andZwelihle, by the residents themselves.Any enquiries with regards to the closure

of the mini transfer station can be directedto Don Kearney, area manager, HermanusAdministration on 028 313 8112.

The mini transfer station in Sandbaai isgoing to be dismantled and removed.

Fireworks – fun for people, not so for animalsDid I see and hear right? Just beforemid-night on the eve of the New Year, eNewsbroadcast an interview on televisionwith a policeman in Gauteng. He, the po-liceman, made the statement that it wasokay for the public to let off fireworksfor an hour before and after midnight tosee in the new year.He also stated this was now legal but

that at any other time you would needa permit to either buy or sell fireworksand if you do not comply you could befined up to R1 500 for the first offence.I don’t care if it is a local, newly insti-

tutedby-law inGauteng, but tobroadcastit on national television, shows the mor-al disregard that some of our media areresponsible for.I do not condone any fireworks other

than professional pyrotechnics in astrictly controlled environment awayfrom animals.Amateurs who think that they are spe-

cialists in the art of pyrotechnics shouldbe heavily fined and the sale and settingoff of fireworks to the public, totallybanned and heavy penalties institutedfor those who break the laws.I do believe that Hermanus and its en-

virons have had a ban on amateur pyro-technics for a number of years, althoughit is difficult to control when there is aninflux of holiday makers and visitorsduring the festive season.Maybe there should be warnings post-

ed throughout the town and district dur-ing peak holiday season reminding andwarningvisitors that it is illegal to igniteand possess fireworks and that they willbe fined if they break the law with thepossibility of jail time if they harm otherpersons or animals. My staffie, Stan, is so traumatised by

fireworks that he will attack and even

chew through a door just to get awayfrom the noise of fireworks, and this isall thanks to Kimberley Municipality’sown celebratory fireworks display a fewyears ago where no warning was givento the public.Alas, this happened again on New

Year’s Eve here in our new home herein the Overstrand. As midnight approached there were

fireworks going off (some as loud as amortar bomb) all over Onrus and Ver-mont, especially near Davies pool andthe campground. The cacophony created by the barking

and other sounds of animals in distresswas alarming. After phoning the local police, who ac-

knowledged that fireworks and the set-ting off thereof was illegal and that theyhad had numerous complaints, did theyconfirm that they had sent out some oftheir units to investigate.Only at about 01:00 did the fireworks

stop, unfortunately too late for many oftheanimalsupsetall overourareawhoseowners had gone out celebrating. As midnight approached, we had to se-

date and lock both our dogs away fromthe noise and mayhem created by thenoise.Speaking to our vet this week, it seems

that the fireworks problem is a yearlyoccurrence and extremely difficult to en-force and control even with the threatof being fined.I thereforappeal toanyonewhoconsid-

ers setting off fireworks to realise theconsequences of their action and remem-ber, that any animal that you have trau-matised by your actionmay turn on you,and whose fault will that be?

Mydogalmostbecameowl food

Walking on the cliff path with my dog isone of my favourite things to do in Herma-nus. Dog owners and their well-behavedfour-legged friends on leashes are wellequipped with pooh bags and water beforethey stroll on the paths, meeting otherfriendly dogs and watching rock rabbitswho seem to be not afraid of them, knowingthey are under control on lead or very welltrained.OnFriday 5December at 19:00 on the path

leading down to the little bay covered inpebbles andmostly grey round stones rightnext to the one leading to the tidal pool infront of the Marine Hotel, Kompas and Iwere walking down the stairs....and sud-denly I heard a swooosh sound from the skyand something swooped down on Kompasmaking a “barking” wack-wack-wacksound and flew up to the rocks where it set-tled next to a bigger owl.I was sure we were walking too close to

theirnest and lookedaround to see if I couldspot an owl’s nest. When I could not see any nest, we contin-

ued walking down the stairs “promising”the owl couple we don’t intend harmingthem. After 30 seconds the swoosh noise came

again from behind and the owl attackedKompas again. This time I sawmydog’s hair flyingwhen

the owl tried to grab him behind his neck. The owl flew to the opposite cliff staring

at us from a rock ledge.I grabbed Kompas in my arms while beg-

ging the owl to leave us and tried to coverKompas with my torso while turning andrunning upstairs to get away.Lo and behold for a third time the owl

attacked Kompas while I held him tight tomy body.I screamed, waving my arm and the owl

flew to his companion.Being a tough little Border Terrier, Kom-

pas not once cried and was not hurt, butto me it was a very scary experience, al-though we both knew it was awesome to bepart of nature.Kompas weighs 7,5kg and could well be

seen as prey for the Cape Vulture Owl withhis coat colour being the same as that ofrock rabbits, as well as his size similar tothe fully grown ones.

Mostly sunny conditions are expected for the weekend with a chanceof light rain passing through from next week. With the current highpressure conditions we can also expect very dry conditions togetherwith heatwaves which are ideal for the development and spread ofveld fires.

To theyoungsterswhomisbehaved - shameonyou!

To those young people who invaded OnrusRiver Village this holiday season and abusedour hospitality – shame on you!

When the holiday season approaches theCouncil and the Ratepayers Associationspend a lot of time sprucing up Onrus River. The sidewalks are mown, the grass at thebeach is regularly watered – often by hand– and arrangements are made to removewaste from the public bins more often thanusual. Then we wait to welcome visitors.

What a disaster! We were swamped by ahorde of young people who seemingly did notknow how to behave. You vandalised proper-ty, breaking off street names, overturningconcrete street names and breaking downsign posts. You broke the concrete trash binsby rolling them into the streets or down theparking area at the beach.

Who do you think pays for these repairs? You roam the streets in packs throughout

the night, using loud, foul language, openlydrinking in the streets and throwing bottles

over fences onto sidewalks. Do the conse-quences of broken glass where children walknot bother you?

Residents are too afraid to confront thesemisbehaving youngsters in fear of retalia-tion.

To the parents of these youngsters: “Didyou not teach your children to respect prop-erty, public or private? Is it acceptable to youthat your children are such an absolute nui-sance and a disgrace to the towns where theycome from? Please keep your children athome until they have grown up.

“Do not rent a home under the false preten-ces that you will be staying there and thenallow 18 youngsters in there!”

We the residents, love the vibe of the holi-day season in Onrus, where families cometo have a great time. Children are safe hereand it is a wonderful place. If you can’t showrespect, then rather stay at home and destroyyour own towns and homes.

Dubbeleaftrekkingopdebietkaart bykettingwinkel

First aidkit at businesses shouldbe compulsoryIn the time I have been privileged to live inthe Overstrand, I have seen the transforma-tion and developments that have changed ourspace from a sleepy but cuddly village to athriving small town.

I feel the next logical step is to make surethat all businesses that have direct dealingswith the public have one person on duty withsome first aid skills.

At the moment we are getting some strangereactions. Taking offence that anyone has theaudacity to be taken ill or ignore the injuredor ill person in the hope they may disappearin a puff of smoke. A first aid kit at each busi-ness should also be made compulsory. Wherethere are people there is always the risk oflittle mishaps. Let’s not ignore it.

Focuson the serious ‘accommodation’problemsatour court, not on thewhistleblowers!

Your continued reportage on the court’sproblems are appreciated as this seems to,finally, get some ministerial mandarin’s at-tentions.

But a false attribution to me in the head-line (“Local lawyer deems SAPS and Courtillegal,”HT, 18 December), may be seriouslyembarrassing to my professional reputa-tion. I never said or wrote that the policestation or court had illegal structures.

I gave the Times’ copies of letters fromOverstrand Municipality to two govern-ment departments relating to illegal struc-tures, on the court premises.

The focus should be on the serious ‘’ac-commodation’’ problems at our court, noton the whistle blowers!

As regional representative of the Law So-ciety and as the appointed lawyer who at-tends the Case Flow Management meetings(between the SAPS, Correctional Services,Court, NPA, Judiciary and Social Services)I am acutely aware of the daily struggle by

good men and women who render their ser-vices to the public in woefully inadequatestructures.

The fact that various government depart-ments are not rising to the challenges (aftermore than a decade of pleading to them) –or are funnelling budgeted money for ourcourt to other purposes, is what we, con-cerned attorneys, are addressing.

The report should not focus on what I be-lieve, that it is “scandalously inadequate”,but the lack of response from the two depart-ments concerned, and what steps were tak-en to get their responses.

We have succeeded in getting a monthlyRegional Civil Court presence here.

We have succeeded in getting a SmallClaims Court for Hermanus. (We used to fallunder Caledon).

We will, with all citizens and media sup-port, get a new court!

But after a routine check they werepleasantly surprised when friendly staffmembers of the Hangklip-KleinmondTourism Bureau handed them a welcomegift pack and invited them to take part ina social media photo campaign.

It took some persuasion to get some ofthe visitors out of their cars to come andpose next to local icon, Pikkie the Pen-guin, for a photo taken with their owncellphone or camera.

NATURE MATTERS: Abalone, or perlemoen, are molluscs, as are clams, scallops, sea slugs, octopuses andsquid. Molluscs have a soft bodysurrounded by a mantle, a head anda large muscular foot. The spiralstructure, so common in snail shells,is flattened in the abalone shell. It isshaped like an ear, with a row ofbreathing pores down one side.Shells are prized because of their inner, iridescent layer, called mother ofpearl. Abalone are a delicacy in thefar east and high prices are paid forthem, leading to successful abalonefarming, as well as illegal harvestingof abalone.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

11938M/E

The Western Cape Government Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning has embarked on a process of listing Public Launch Sites in the Western Cape in termsof section 2(1) of the Public Launch Site Regulations, promulgated on 27 June 2014. In terms of the regulations, members of the public may only launch a vessel from an official site. The regulations exclude privately used launch sites. A vessel excludes non-motorisedwaterborne craft which do not require a vehicle or any other equipment to launch into the water.

The first gathering of the merged organis-ing team was held at the end of last monthand they have mapped out an entirely differ-ent kind of feel for the golf day in March.

Formal proceedings will be replaced withan energy-induced day with various kinds of

activities.An“old fashioned”tombola table,anadven-

turous chipping competition and a mouth-gaping event on the driving range has the po-tential to cause players to book a tee-off timesooner rather than later.

As in previous years, a morning and after-noon field will be played, but this year bothfields are a four ball alliance format.

The competition fee in the morning is R250per player, and R2 000 per four ball for corpo-rate play in the afternoon.

The participants will be treated with an ar-ray of food and drink.

A colourful variety of music and vibey en-tertainment will end the day.
