SUPPORT OF THE ARTS: MILESTONE Hermanus FynArts Fund launched Hermanus FynArts, to be held from 5 to 16 June, has reached a new milestone – their newly estab- lished Hermanus FynArts Fund has received its first two contribu- tions. Hermanus Property Management Pty Ltd, represented by Alex van der Sluys, is the first corporate to have pledged its support, and Harvey Ty- son the first contributor in a personal capacity. “I was not keen to agree to broad- cast my contribution, but was per- suaded that it might encourage other people from the Overstrand to con- tribute to the Hermanus FynArts Fund,” says Tyson, a former editor of The Star. “Hermanus FynArts has been growing in stature and will most cer- tainly continue not only to establish Hermanus as a centre celebrating South African art, but also as a vehi- cle to involve the whole community.” “FynArts can stimulate and benefit our unique and growing community, provided there is support from all of us – English, Afrikaans and Xhosa – and provided those of us who can afford to enjoy the festival events help some of those less fortunate to take part.” The long-term aim of Hermanus FynArts is to establish a School of the Arts for the Overstrand in Herma- nus. In the shorter term, the aim is to increase audiences at concerts and at workshops to include people who for socio-economic reasons are not able to take part in the festival. “We are deeply grateful to the bene- factors who have to date assisted in making this possible. But the festival, now in its third year, still has no ma- jor financial backing,” says Festival Director Mary Faure. “We have therefore launched a be- nevolent fund with its own bank ac- count. On top of contributions re- ceived, any surplus in the FynArts account at the end of the 2015 festival will be paid into the benevolent fund in order to promote the relevance and scope of arts education via Her- manus FynArts. sowat 3 000 jaar voor Christus begin.

by die weer aanpas. Volgens my waarne-

ming verander die hele aardse weerpa-

troon elke 49 jaar.

is 49.

    spektrumonsniebeskermteenskadelike

strale nie en word selfs ons kommunika-

    sie- satelliete daardeur geraak.

Tobie beskou Hermanus as baie be-

    voorreg wat die weer betref.

Soos die warm Indiese hoogdruk oor

die Oos-Kaap sirkuleer en n koue Atlan-

tiese laagdruk aan die Weskus ook lug

suidwaarts stuur, vermy die twee basies

    mekaaren isdaaromtrentgeenbeweging

    hitte-toestandeweerskantevanonsener-

vaar die Overstrand dit nie so intens of

    gereeld nie.

Tobie s dis basies onmoontlik om die

    weer heeltemal akkuraat te voorspel,

maar dat Suid-Afrika se weerdienste van

    die beste ter wreld is.

Ek probeer nooit regtig die weer voor-

spel nie. Ek maak wel van grafieke ge-

bruik, maar verder beskryf ek die weer-

patrone soos ek dit van my kinderdae af

    verstaanendopgehouhet.Ekgebruikmy

    lug is onvoorspelbaar soos diewindgedu-

    rig verander.

LETS ZUMBA FOR L2L: To help raise funds for the upcoming Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse

walk, Emilia Knight organised a Zumbathon that took place in the Sandbaai Hall this past

Saturday. Emilia says: A Zumbathon is a 90 minute nonstop Latin inspired aerobic dance

session. Instructors from all over the Western Cape supported me and we raised a jolly

good amount towards L2L. I would like to thank every person who contributed their time

and energy towards this good cause. This is my first L2L and I am blown away by the gen

erosity of our community and friends. PHOTO: KEITH MURRAY

    policework

    The Stanford Community Police

    Forum (CPF) has initiated a

    project that aims to recognise

    and motivate efficient police

work in the different teams, also

called shifts, where much of the

    visible policing is co-ordinated.

Each member of a shift, who has

    performed consistently well over a

    period of three months, receives

Pick n Pay vouchers, the first of

    which was sponsored by Stanford

    Village Properties.

The award, in the form of a

plaque, is displayed at the police

    station.

    Captain JK Africa is sponsoring

a floating trophy that is presented

    to the winning shift.

So far, two awards have been

made, the first for the third quarter

    of 2014 (July to September).

This shift was led by Sergeant

    Lungiswa Ndzambo, the other

    members being Constable Hloni-

    phile Sukwana, Constable Christi-

    anoArizan, Constable AndiswaDi-

    la andReserveConstableFernando

Damon. This shift arrested a man

    for housebreaking, within two

hours after he had attempted to es-

    cape by swimming across theKlein

    River.

The second award, for the fourth

    quarter (October to December

2014), went to the shift who made

    themost arrests, including 17 drug-

    related crimes in the three-month

    period.

The shift was led by Constable

    Anele Sigwili, with good support

    from Constable Ashley Prins, Con-

    stable Thamsanqa Cekiso and Con-

    stable Burnerd Arendse.

    voucher to Constable Ashley Prins.

WHAT WAS THE CRANE LIFTING?: No, its not a safe being

hoisted as some readers thought when they saw a huge crane lift

ing and depositing a large container at the municipal building.

This Liebherr 220 ton crane with a reach of 75 metres was used

to remove an old roofmounted airconditioner from the municipal

auditorium last Friday and to replace it with a new one. The old

and damaged airconditioner was originally installed when the

building was constructed about 12 years ago. According to Don

Kearney, senior manager, administration at Overstrand Municipali

ty, the old airconditioner had been repaired on a few occasions,

but finally packed up late in 2013. Without the airconditioner,

the auditorium became uncomfortable during the summer months.

As the roof of the auditorium is surrounded by huge trees and

other buildings, a mobile crane with a long reach had to be

hired. This magnificent crane is a rare sight in any town and

drew many onlookers. PHOTO: JANHENDRIK COETZER

    Overstrand Brandweer en brand-

    weermanne van sover as Moor-

    reesburg, Stellenbosch en Kaap-

stad moes tussen 28 Februarie en

8 Maart bontstaan om nie minder

nie as 29 brande in verskillende

    areas te beveg.

    Volgens n verslag wat uitgereik

is deur Overstrand Brand- en Red-

    dingsdienste was Bettysbaai,

    Pringlebaai, Vogelvalley, Platbos

en Heidehof onder die areas wat

die ergste deurgeloop het. In die

    meeste van hierdie areas moes

    daar ook van helikopters gebruik

    gemaak word.

Die brand in Bettysbaai, wat by

    Dawidskraal ontstaan het, was die

ergste, met inwoners wat hul wo-

nings moes ontruim en baie van

die huise wat skade gely het.

    VolgensRiekieNel, inwonervan

    Bettysbaai,moeshulle indievroe

    hul woning ontruim.

    Behalwe die rookskade het die

    dak,geuteenallehoutwerkaandie

huis erg skade gely. Ons hele tuin

is ook totaal verwoes. Ons het ons

hond, n Husky, gegryp en by die

    Crusalla-saal, wat mense vir die

    nag gehuisves het, gaan oornag.

Die area lyk maar sleg, kompleet

    soos n maanlandskap.

daar twee keer mense by ons ge-

    VolgensOverstrandBrandweer-

hoof, Lester Smith, moet daar nog

    bepaal word presies hoeveel eien-

dom en wonings skade gely het

asook die omvang van die areas

    wat gebrand het.

Die hoof van Brand- en Rampbe-

    stuur by Overberg Distriksmuni-

    sipaliteit, Reinard Geldenhuys, s

al die brande is tans geblus, maar

dat hulle nog nie die omvang kan

    bepaal nie.

Ons beplan om teen vroeg vol-

    gendeweekoordiearea tevliegom

    te bepaal presies hoeveel hektaar

    gebrand het.

    By navraag het Fadila Septem-

    ber, polisiewoordvoerder, ges die

ondersoek na die brande wat in

    Hawston ontstaan het, het veran-

    der. Die aanvanklike saak van

    brandstigting het nou verander na

    kwaadwillige beskadiging van ei-

endom. Ons het nog nie n deur-

    braakgemaaknie endie saakduur

    steeds voort.

Die polisie het op Maandag 2

Maart n besoek by Hawston Pri-

mr afgel het, nadat dit aandie lig

    gekom het dat dit vermoedelik

leerders van di skool was wat die

    brand begin het.

n Bron by die skool bevestig dat

daar nog nie uitsluitsel is nie.

Ons het opMaandag 9 Maart n

    wyksraadsvergadering gehou

    waar die kwessie weer aange-

spreek is. Daar is net ges die poli-

Barbara, the middle daughter, gave a brief

overview of her moms life: Albertine was

born in Holland on 7March 1915. On her wed-

Albertine told her family: Thank you for

coming all the way. Its marvellous to see us

all together. Onrust is a magical world, I am

very sentimental about it. SA is the best coun-

    country.

    Briewe

    Letters

    Let art and nature

    nurture and unite us

Hermanus is renowned for its scenic

    beauty, environmental wealth and

    heritage, award-winning wines, and

    asamecca for theperformingandvisu-

    al arts.

Yes, this town and its surrounding

    areasabound increative, inspiredpeo-

ple who add a dynamic dimension to

the rich cultural life we enjoy.

Be it those classical music concerts

regularly brought to us, the number of

artists and art galleries in the Over-

strand, the First Fridays Artwalk, the

    Kalfiefees, or the increasingly popular

    annual Hermanus FynArts Festival,

there is always something on offer de-

    signed to feed the soul.

    With Hermanus FynArts establish-

ing a fund to make their programme

of events accessible to a broader audi-

ence, with an emphasis on education,

our cultural development as a society

    is in good hands.

In the same way, making the art

world and the experience of its great

    diversity available to people who

would never otherwise have had the

    opportunity, has great community-

    building potential.

Its lovely to enjoy all this culture

and fine living around us, but unless

we are all willing to share this privi-

lege with one another, we will remain

    divided and separate.

Dont give up there is hope

Hi all you compassionate people of Herma-

    nus.

Today my wife, son and I want to share

our story in order to give people in need

hope and the assurance that in your town

Hermanus there is help and assistance if

you are experiencing hardship. All youve

    got to do is ask.

This is our story of how life can knock

    youdownandstrangerscanpickyouupand

put you back on your feet.

My name is Fanie de Klerk, mechanic by

trade. I livedwithmywife and son in Boks-

burg and was employed at a company as

working foreman, when things turned for

the worse when the company was declared

bankrupt. We moved to Hermanus where

I got a temporary job as mechanic.

Again things turned bad when we had to

vacate the flatwherewe stayedwith a fami-

ly member, because the rent was behind.

We had nowhere to go. No money, no

friends to ask forhelp andwewere sleeping

in my car. Unemployed and about to give

up on everything, I posted on a Facebook

    pagecalledHermanusStaanSaam/Herma-

    nusStandTogetherandsharedmydilemma

in a desperate attempt to get my wife and

learning disabled son (19) out of the streets

in dark nights, sleeping very uncomforta-

bly. Soon after the post, I was contacted by

Tronel Meintjies of Hermanus Stand To-

gether and she asked me where we were,

what we needed and if she may come to us.

She arrived with a hot cooked meal, toilet-

    ries and cooldrink.

She asked if we could hang in there for

awhile longerwhile shewould try and sort

out what they can do to get us out of this

predicament. In two days time, Tronel and

the members of Hermanus Stand Together

organised enough money for fuel and food

    totakeustoPretoria.Whileorganisingthis,

they took good care of us, making sure we

    were fed and safe.

Dont you think this is anawesomegroup

    ofpeoplethatreallyputsothersbeforethem-

selves? I want to ask people who are in a

bind in life, to reach out.

I am a very proud person and learned

sometimes in life its worth it to put aside

    yourpridesothatGodcanshowyoutheway

forward. Also, I want to ask those who are

not less fortunate, to support Hermanus

    StandTogether. It is agreat causewithawe-

some people doing good. We love you all.

    May God bless you.
