Col Francois de Wet, acting sta- tion commander at the Hermanus Police station, said on Monday that their members kicked off Op- eration Combat by visiting schools in the Overstrand. “What is alarming to us, is that there are signs of gangsterism at many schools, ranging from gangster tattoos and markings to known gangster graffiti on some of the school walls, and even drawn on some of the learners’ school cases, indicating an in- volvement with gangs. Most of the learners who have these gang- ster related tattoos or markings reside in the Hawston area.” The sector managers of the Hermanus Police started visiting schools, primary and high schools, in Hermanus, Mount Pleasant, Zwelihle and Hawston last Wednesday. At some of these schools, even at a primary school, they found gang-signs tattooed and/or drawn on the children’s arms, in- dicating they are members of a gang. Hermanus and Stanford Police are issuing a stern warning to gang members, and especially to those who use learners in their gang related activities. “These gang members are known to us and have been moni- tored for a long period. They are continuously involved in ongo- ing crimes such as drug traffick- ing, dealing in stolen goods and abalone smuggling, etc,” said Sgt. RJ Gouws of Stanford Police. “They are repeat offenders who have records of cases reported against them, showing their in- volvement in criminal activities. Our aim is to prove their involve- ment in organised crime syndi- cates and gangs and to charge them under the POCA (Preven- tion of Organised Crime Act). “This means that if found guilty, their assets (moveable or unmovable) can be forfeited to the state. It also means that when it comes to sentencing, a maximum sentence can be expected in ac- cordance with the act.” De Wet stated on Monday that the operation’s success is not only dependent on police members, but all the role players, including child welfare, social services, the justice department, churches, schools, teachers, parents and anyone who can assist in combat- ing gangsterism in the Over- strand. “By law, parents can be prose- cuted if found that their child has not gone to school or just dropped out. The same goes for the teach- ers of the school if they have not reported these absences to the de- partment of education. A docket will be opened and investigated under the children protection act: Abandoning of Children,” said De Wet. Article continues on page 14. Whata rigmarole toreplacea treeMany of you would have noticedthat one of the newly-plantedtreesonthemedianof theprovin-cial main road (the R43) oppositeGateway Shopping Centre, haddied several months ago.

The Hermanus Ratepayers’ Asso-ciation and Business Chamber de-cided to partner to replace the deadtree and it proved more interestingthan first thought, regalesBobStan-way, chairman: Hermanus Rate-payers. “We had to find out who’stree it was that had died, who couldgive permission to replace it, andwhere to acquire a white pear treeto match the rest of the trees.“Inquiries began with the Over-

Bendedeelname is amper soos dwelm

gebruik.

Kids taught it’s okay to keep what is not theirs

Dear parent(s), shame on you!Ifyourchildbringshomeanitemofclothing

or anything that is not hers/his from school,be the responsible adult and return it. If youkeepwhat is not your child’s own items, whatare you teaching that little soul? To grow upand be a thief? That it’s okay to take what isnot yours?

I’msurea lot ofparentswill agree that thereis nothing as annoying as having your childforget something at school and not finding itwhen you go to school and look for it, becauseof some parents who won’t think twice abouthelping themselves to an item belonging tosomeone else’s child.

My five-year-oldwill occasionallybringun-familiar items home and I will always returnthem.Yes, kids forget their shoes, clothes, etc.But schools have a lost-and-found box just forthat purpose.

AweekagomydaughterwenttoschoolwithbrandnewwhiteT-barwalkmates. She forgotthemat the playground and only realised that

when we got home. The following day welooked for them and to my surprise they hadgrown legs and found a new home on someinnocent child’s feet.

Let me say this to that parent, you are notfit to be a parent and I wonder how you takeprideseeingyour littlegirl inmychild’s shoesevery time. It’s not the first time this hap-pened – in 2012my firstborn lost a pair ofNewBalance takkies and the same happened.

Yes, it’s not just the value of the items thatis the issue, what saddensme themost iswhatwill happen to your childwhohas been raisedto dress up in stolen items.

Clearly this is theft and one day that childwill be an adult and may steal even biggerthings. Who’s fault will that be? I pray thatGod saves kidswhoare exposed to such abusefrom their parent(s), because no matter howyou look at it, this is another form of abuse.

This letter will only offend parents who arebusy raising thieves and frankly I don’t care.

Where does the buck stop with dog attacks?Whenmywifewent forhercustomaryear-lymorning exercisewalk inSandbaai thisweek, shewas attacked by a largeGermanShepherd/Alsation dog and bitten on herarm. The dog had leapt with ease over agarden wall. The attack came withoutwarning and was not provoked. The inci-dent occurred at about 07:50 on Monday8 September.

When I called at the house, the domesticinformed me that the owners were awayon holiday. After having the wound treat-edbyourdoctor, theincidentwasformallylogged at the municipal law enforcementoffice. The investigating officer had al-ready responded promptly to my earliertelephonic complaint and I have no doubtthat thedog’sownerwillbetracedandcon-tacted without delay and that correctivemeasures will be put in place.

My great concern now is that my wifehas been traumatised by this unpleasantattack,whichwillmakehermorningexer-cise walks a less-than-pleasant experi-

ence. We see daily occurrences of dogs be-ing allowed to run in the road or on ourbeach without their leashes.

Invariably the owners, if confronted, will indignantly defend their positionwith a “my dog doesn’t bite” response.Ironically, while IwasonthephonetoLawEnforcement immediately after the inci-dent, I watched a young mother pushingher pram past our home, while her twoblack- and-white dogs were running looseon the road around her.

One hundred metres ahead of her, thesame large Alsation might have been get-ting ready to jump the wall again. Whatif ...?

I sincerely believe that what happenedto my wife is an experience that not eventhe most irresponsible of dog ownerswouldwishonanyone, butwheredoesonedraw the line with regard to tolerance?

Raised funds for thenext three years!

Angie and I returned recently after a whirl-wind40-day trip toEngland,Holland,Switzer-land and Sweden to go and create an aware-ness of the good news stories of changed livesof youngpeople from theOverstrand,whoaregrabbingtheiropportunitiesandturbocharg-ing forward towards a better future!

In 2013, we helped two students to go to uni-versity to study further. This year we havehelped tenstudents to study furtheratuniver-sityandotherplacesof furtherstudy, andnextyearwewill have to help twenty that we havealready identified to assist.

During our trip wemanaged to raise all thenecessary funds for the next three years, tohelp the studentswhoare currently studying,as well as the new ones to register for theircourses and accommodation as well as sup-port throughout the year. Once in, we helpthem arrange for bursaries and loans andwhatever it takes to get them through theirchosen courses.

From Sweden there will be cultural tourstoZwelihle tocomeandexperienceXhosahos-pitality, food and lifestyle vibe. They will behosted by students of Francois Barnard fromHarbour Rock’s Hospitality/Lifeskills Initia-tive.

FromHolland there are bursary opportuni-ties as well as mentorship by very prominentbusiness people. There is even a bread calledSparklekids. It is bread sold by a bakery inRotterdam and one euro is given to Sparklek-ids for every bread sold. How is that for cool!

From England we received the bulk of thefinance. The donor is a family who does notwant to be named, but who loves Hermanusand often comes and visits here.

Rotary Hermanus also allocated a substan-tial amount of money to Sparklekids, as havedear friends locally, who may well heave asigh of relief that they are now a little off thehook.

Thankyouagain to our friends (theVanZylSmit family) who paid for our return ticketsas well as the people who put us up every sin-gle night of the trip overseas, especially Jokeand Daan from Dutchies at Grotto Beach.

Thank you also to Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthriewhohasgonewaybeyondherofficialrole and has become a friend and supporter.

Mandy’sunexpecteddeathahuge loss forHermanusRainbowTrust

By Dave WrefordIt is with great sadness that I share

the devastating news of Mandy’s (Man-disa Mamane) unexpected passingaway on Saturday morning after ashort stay in hospital.

Our sincere condolences go out to allher family and friends, and everyonewho knew her. She was truly an amaz-ing person and she will be sadly missedby everyone who knew her.

It is especially sad as she was soyoung and vibrant and was makingsuch a difference in so many children’slives and had so much to offer our com-munities.

I had the privilege of working withMandy over the last two years and wascontinually motivated by her total ded-ication and commitment to the amaz-ing work she was doing in Zwelihle.

Shesuccessfullymanagedthe“Spon-sor a Child” programme for manyyears through difficult circumstances, always making sure that she cared forthem like a mother.

She knew all the “Sponsor a Child”children personally, and visited theirhomes regularly, had discussions with

the parents, siblings, guardi-ans, friends and teachers.

She purchased their month-ly toiletries and food parcels, made sure they got new uni-forms and would always en-sure they had warm clothesand blankets.

Her reporting was done pro-fessionally and always ontime, highlighting issues andareas that needed attention.

She was particularly com-mitted to keeping the childrenbusy with after school activities so thatthey would not be exposed to the gangs.

She managed and coached the chil-dren’s’ choirsandthe juniorhockeyac-tivities, was involved in a children’ssupport group after hours and was al-ways available to help out in the office.

Shewasrecentlypromotedtoa“com-munity development assistant” andwas making a huge contribution to thesuccess of the Parenting Worx pro-gramme.

Despite her demanding schedule, she was also busy with a three-yearbusiness administration course, hav-

ing obtained distinc-tions in many of themodules last year.

Mandy: thank you foreverything you did forall of us, we will neverforgetyou, mayyourestin peace.

Stayalert people!

I have experienced three dis-appointments in the last fewweeks.

The first one involves alarge sum of money placed intwo Stanlib money market ac-counts. Like most people Ihaveuptorecentlyconsideredsuch monies to be absolutelysecure. Alas, Stanlib hadplaced some of my funds in Ab-il accounts. When the Abilbubble burst Stanlib debited4,6% to my two investments.I have been assured by Stanlibthat the missing funds will berefunded at some stage in thefuture together with interestthat will have accrued but no-body can tell me when thatwould be. Two accountantfriends independently of eachother have told me to kiss thelost money goodbye.

I would have thought that insociety Stanlib should ratherhave utilised their own fundsto settle their debts, possiblypartly at the expense of their

senior staff who might notthen qualify for an annual bo-nus, but I am sure this willnever happen.

My second disappointmentwas with a large local super-market. A weekend advertise-menthadofferedaverypalata-ble wine at a very low price, but even accepting that therehad been a mistake in thewording of the advert, the cor-rected version still offered thewine at a very low price. I havebeen back to the shop repeat-edly but the promised winenever seemed to arrive at all.

My third disappointmentinvolved a local funeral par-lour. Placing a death noticethrough it in a newspaper costme R490. Subsequent enquiryrevealed that the same advertcould have been placed by my-self for only R69.

I trust the above will alertsome people.

‘Punished to fullextent of the law’JANINE VAN DER RIET

From page 1:In some schools some of the learners

claimed they have to pay “protection money”to other learners in order to be safe.

The police will investigate these allegationsfurther. De Wet said gang members mustknow that they can be punished to the full ex-tent of the law should they recruit childrenfor their criminal activities.

The aim of both police stations is to targetthe new and upcoming youth gangs that wantto associate themselves with establishedgangs and organised crime entities.

“Gang members usually get involved incriminal activities at a young age, hangingaround with criminals who belong to gangsand organised crime syndicates.

“At a young age kids pick up these bad hab-its and before they know it they are suckedup in crime syndicates,” Gouws said.

Operation Combat requires input from thewhole community and any person with infor-mation on any criminal activity concerninggang related incidents can contact De Wet on028 313 5300 at the Hermanus Police Stationor Gouws on 028 341 0601 in Stanford.

SPECIAL REPORT

CapeTownSupercarClub launchFRANS LE ROUX

It does not happen very oftenthat I amat a loss forwords. Forthat exact reason I decided topursue a career in journalism.

About two weeks ago I receivedan email which invited me to joina certain inaugural supercar clublaunch. I first had to check that themail was not scam and after glan-cingatmycalendar I could see thatwe have indeed passed the monthof April. After some research I found that

this ‘fantasy’ event will be takingplace and that by some stroke ofluckmynamewasadded to theme-dia list.On a beautiful Sundaymorning,

more than 50 supercar-owners de-scendedon the stunningTableBayHotel in Cape Town’s picturesqueWaterfront. Scared pedestriansand angry residents were awaken-ed to the sounds of pure motoringbliss as some of the enthusiasticownersdecided tomake theirpres-ence know - as if arriving in a Fer-rari is not enough.Afteraquickintroductionbytel-

evision’s Ignition GT presenterMariusRoberts, the inaugural IBVCapeTownSupercarClubwasoffi-cially launched.About tenmembers of themedia

were then told to pick a supercarinwhichtheywouldthenbedrivento the breakfast destination in theheart of the Boland.Being the petrolhead that I am,

I was pretty sure which of the carsI would most likely want to be apassenger in. After letting the oddAudi or BMW pass, I eagerly rantowards a British icon. Before mestood a blackAstonMartinRapideS. For those in the know, it is in-

deedanAstonMartin sedanwhichseats four and has a decent-sizedboot. After I greetedmy two pilots, off wewent to beautiful Paarl. Ourbreakfast would be served at theVal de Vie Polo estate.Try and imagine what othermo-

torists might have gone throughwhen 50 supercars just casuallydrove past them on the N1.Safelycosseted in thebackofour

AstonMartin, I slowly began to re-

alisewhytheseexoticsaren’tmoreaffordable. The leather, for exam-ple, gets sourced from the sameherd of cattle. This provides thesame quality of leather, which isthenhand-stitched throughout theentire cabin. Wonderfully suppor-tive seats are standard. You reallyneed themonce the loud-pedal getsstomped on.This Aston Martin Rapide S is

powered by a behemoth of an en-

gine. A 6,0 litre V12 which pushesout 411 kW and 630 Nm. This ena-bles the grand saloon to shoot past100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. Fora car weighing just below two tonsand measuring five metres, this isan impressive feat. The handlinginspires confidence and the sheersize of the car feels less intimidat-ing when the driver arrives at acorner. After a brilliant drive overthemajesticDuToistkloofPass,we

arrived at our breakfast destina-tion.My day does not end there

though. Later that afternoon I wasgiven the chance to drive aFerrariCalifornia. This was one of thethings I had onmy so-called ‘buck-et-list’.Myheartwaspoundingandmy palms sweaty, but I decided tonot let the opportunity passme by.The California was introducedback in 2009 as the first ever Ferra-ri to feature a front mounted en-gine. The 4,3 litre V8 produced338 kW and 485 Nm. All this in abeautiful cabriolet grand tourer.Fromthemomentyou fireup the

engine, yourhearing is altered for-ever. That signature high-pitchV8growl engulfs its audience. That isthe unmistakable sound a petrol-head such asmyself will never for-get. With my whole body coveredin goosebumps I slowly exited thecramped parking lot. My drive on-ly lasted about 10 minutes but theemotions I felt, are something thatI will take to the grave.Aswewereabout toboardamin-

ibus back to Cape Town, I had an-other chance to drive the Califor-nia. The next 60 minutes of my lifewas close to perfect. Driving theCalifornia whilst the sun is shin-ing, on a beautiful motorway withthe roof down, is stuff that dreamsare made off.Later that afternoon I dropped

the car off at the hotel and strug-gled to hand over the keys.As I walked back to my own car,

I was amazed at the day I had. Allsupercar owners were friendlyand accommodating, and the en-tire event was well organised byVivid Luxury and IBV SupercarClub. Hopefully in the near futureIwillgetanotherchancetoshortenmy bucket-list.

More than 50 supercars were present at the inaugural IBV Supercar club’s Cape Town launch. Here themutlimillion rand parade is seen at the top of Du Toitskloof Pass. PHOTO: FRANS LE ROUX

Anxious counting for DOGSThe DOGS played an Individual Stableford(log) on 9 September in Kleinmond.

Just like London buses, you wait for everand then two come along at once. And sureenough, Mr Countback defeated his arch-ri-val by a comfortable two points to make ita double-decker (counting this and lastweek).

There was some anxious counting on thelower deck too with no less than six playerswithin 2points of ignominy – andnot theusu-al suspects either.

In the end itwasTrichiVichiwhosnatcheddefeat from the jaws of victory leaving theStar of David to twinkle for another day.
