Rina Louw, the manager of Her- manus Child Welfare, was alone at the office and as she was about to leave at 17:30, four men entered the premises through the unlocked front door and tried to strangle her. According to Lt Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus SAPS, the four men, who had scarves cov- ering their faces, strangled Louw, and she lost consciousness. She was left lying on the floor. When she re- gained consciousness, the suspects threatened to kill her. September says the suspects stole a cellphone and a laptop and left the scene. Louw, who sustained injuries to her throat and bruises on her arm, was treated by ambulance paramed- ics on the scene, but did not want to be taken to the hospital. September says Louw was severe- ly traumatised by the ordeal. Alastair Lyle, a member of the Hermanus Child Welfare Board, is- sued this statement following the at- tack: “The board and employees of Child Welfare Hermanus would like to express their anger and concern on the vicious and unprovoked at- tack on their manager, Rina Louw, who has been such a dedicated, loyal and long serving manager of Child Welfare Hermanus and been instru- mental in trying to expand its areas of influence in the local community. “What drives people to such cow- ardly acts is incomprehensible and we can only be grateful that Rina sustained no further or permanent injury. “We wish her a speedy recovery and hope such an assault does not deflect her from her child caring work in Hermanus.” Louw is spending time with her sister, who also lives in the Over- strand. Molly Venter, a close friend of Ri- na’s and former chairperson of the Hermanus Child Welfare Board, says Rina was at the Child Welfare office to receive a donation of food, and as she was locking up to leave, she was attacked. Venter says: “Rina has had a hang of a shock and it’s going to take time for her to recover. She is, however, being fortified by her family, friends and church.” The investigating officer, Const Ruehan van Romburgh, says the suspects are still at large. He is looking for anyone who wit- nessed or saw anything that took place at Hermanus Child Welfare on Sunday (1 February) early evening to come forward and contact him at 028 313 7000. A robbery and attempted murder took place at the Child Welfare Hermanus head office based in Mount Pleas- ant on Sunday 1 February. ‘Awareness campaign’ at circus takes a nasty turnJANINE VAN DER RIET

A demonstration against the inclusion ofwild animals in the circus took a nasty turnon Saturday afternoon when the McLarenCircus was about to have their afternoonshow.Toni Brockhoven, national chairperson of

BeautyWithout Cruelty, said in an email onMonday that while he was part of the groupof protestors, he was a victim in an attackby a circus employee.“An unprovoked attack took place in

which a plank with protruding nails wasthrown from across the road, hitting me onmy upper right arm while we were protest-ing.”Ian Mackenzie, working for McLaren Cir-

cus as a car guard, was arrested after Brock-hoven opened a case of assault against him.

David McLaren from the McLaren Circusconfirmed the incident, but said the versionof events differ, as no plank hit anyone.“Ian is employed as a car guard and the

children at the protest showed him the mid-dle finger and intimidated and threw a stoneat him.”According toMcLaren the protest was not

peaceful. “We have video evidence of this. One can clearly hear on the video one of thegirls shouting at our staff member that heneeded a ‘tummy tuck’. One can also hearthem intimidating people in cars, shouting‘boo, youbastard, you coward’ at themwhenturning into the circus field to park.”McLaren emailed photos to theHermanus

Times’ of the protest group.McLaren furtherquestioned the legality of

the protest as, according to him, no law en-forcementwaspresentduringtheseprotests.

“The protest was attended by more than14 people whichmeans they needed a permitas per the Regulation of Gatherings Act.McLaren Circus had to contact law enforce-ment on numerous occasions to assist as theprotestors, once again mainly minors, gotout of hand insulting our clients and staff.”McLaren also aired his concerns regard-

ing the safety of the children standing on thecorner of a narrow pavement.Norah Hudson, organiser of the protest,

said that they held an educational informa-tive awareness campaign.“This campaign was to raise awareness

around the use of wild animals in circusesand was fully supported by the NSPCA. En-thusiastic people and children joined thecampaign and we feel satisfied that weachieved our goal with positive feedback, aswell as planting the seed for future educa-tion.”Shesaid theyareawareof the incident that

took place over the weekend. “A charge waslaid at the SAPS and there is an ongoing in-vestigation.”According to Lieutenant Fadila Septem-

ber, a case of common assault was opened.“A 31-year-old man was arrested, but was

later released on a warning to appear incourt.”

Making lightof load-sheddingoverdinnerKERRY VAN RENSBURG

The customers have a sense of humourwhen it comes to the load-shedding, saysDaniel Lenton, owner of the MilkwoodRestaurant in Onrus.

It seems Eskom has dealt Onrus a doubledose of load-shedding hours and businessesand organisations in the area are having tocope with having no electricity twice a day, three days a week.

And that’s only Eskom’s stage 1 schedule.The friendly woman on Eskom’s customer

care line says: “Someareas aremoreaffectedthan others.”

Although he has adapted the menu andthey cook on gas in the kitchen, Lenton ad-mits that the load-shedding isa“bigburden”.

“Because we have milkwood trees on bothsides of us, and neighbours, we can’t havea generator. And they cost too much.”

Instead of serving fried fish and chips, when the power is down, he says the grilledhake with potatoes or salad, sells very well.

He says they might have to invest in a gasfryer though.

He adds the local customers cope verywellwith load-shedding, and there are no “ama-teur dramatics”.

Lenton says if this happened at a restau-rant in England, where he is from, the cus-tomers would be very disappointed, so he re-ally appreciates thehumour that his custom-ers display and says they “set the tone”.

“Load-sheddingis,however,reallyimpact-ing on the ice-cream being sold at the BeachCafe/Kiosk. Imay havetogetasmallgenera-tor to keep the ice-cream from melting.”

Lenton says another problem with havingtwo load-shedding slots a day, is that because

businesses are running on capacity power, when the power comes back on, there is apower surge and everything on the streettrips.

He says he had no power for a whole day,and because of the “double whammy”, theelectrical company would not come and fixthe problem until the last power outage forthe day was over.

DommavanderMerwe, manager ofOnrusManor Retirement Village, says they have ahuge generator that kicks in when the elec-tricity goes off so their office block andhealth-care centre can continue runningsmoothly. This includes the lounge, kitch-ens, frail-care and step-down facility.

“Patients on oxygen 24-hours a day are notaffected, and we have gas in the kitchen.”

Residents living in the cottages are at themercy of Eskom. The Village managementdoes however provide cookedmeals for resi-dents who choose to make use of this conve-nience, so no one needs to go hungry whenthe power is off.

VanderMerweadds though that thegener-ator,whichusesdiesel, costsa fortunetorun.

Linda Harris, chairperson of the Kid-brooke Place management committee, saysthey have a generator for their main centre,so their office and computers can keep goingas well as the TV in the lounge. The healthcare centre also has its own generator.

Theyuse gas in thekitchen andmeals, pre-pared by Feedem, are served in the diningroom at lunch time.

Harris says they show a movie for resi-dents on Wednesday nights, and have a gen-erator on standby if the power goes off.

“But, so far,” says Harris, “we have beenvery lucky. And our generation knows howto cope with load-shedding.”

Lionel Pedro, nuweskoolhoof by DieBron Primêr in Stan-ford, het vanjaar dieleisels by Sybill Octo-ber, wat 20 jaar hoofvan dié skool was, oorgeneem.

Voordat hy by DieBron Primêr aange-sluit het, was hy depar-tementshoof by Hoër-skool Concordia inKnysna.Hermanus, oftewel Stanford, is

huis in Fisherhaven.

Pedro verduidelik die skuif naStanford.“Die Bron Primêr was vir my

Ooms, tannies, oumas,

oupas – behoorlik al-mal.”Om gehalte-onderwys

tref, glo Pedro in ’n oop-deur-beleid. “As jy ’nprobleem het, kom praatmet my daaroor.

The handover of library books to ZwelihlePrimary School is a slight deviation from thecompany’s original library project.

In the process of identifying a school in thearea for a container library, the foundationbecame aware of the need for books at Zwelih-

le Primary School – which already had a pur-pose built library and the beginning of an im-pressive collection of books.

Du Plessis says: “The Avbob Foundationdecided on the donation as it strongly be-lieves that the school deserves recognitionfor their performance and accomplish-ments.”

Rademan – who has a holiday home in Her-manus – is confident that the handover of li-brary books will have a big impact on the lit-eracy levels of the learners.

He says: “I have no doubt that the bookswill be well utilised and will facilitate manyother exciting new initiatives, which will in-spire the learners to read and to apply theirnewly acquired knowledge and skills.”

Rademan’s message to the learners is: “Youcan achieve whatever you set your mind to.If you believe in yourself, take the opportuni-ties offered to you, and work hard.”

Botha-Guthrie thanked Avbob for “beingan honourable organisation” because whenshe was at the opening of their Hermanusbranch early last year, they said they wantedto invest in the community.

She told the learners: “When you have abook in your hand, you are never without afriend.”

Left in the dark . . .Trying to establish a pattern for Eskom’snew load-sheddingschedule is like tryingto hold water in your arms. Pointless.

Just when you think you have the time-table in yourareasortedand acopy stuckon the fridge for a quick reference, youdouble check the Eskomwebsite, and theneat schedule from two days ago hascompletely changed.

On Tuesday we had a convenient “lo-cal load-shedding at a glance” scheduleprepared for publication.

By Wednesday this plan went up insmoke as the times given on the Eskomwebsite for our suburbs had completelychanged.

Eskom’s customer services lady saysthe schedule is updated every day.Whichmeans the load-shedding times canchange from one day to the next.

So why give us a schedule then? But a schedule Eskom did give in the

form of a double page advert (see pages14 & 15) with load-shedding time tables.

Only timewill tell whether Eskom sticksto these times, or whether we’ll be left inthe dark when we least expect it.

Be safe and keep xylitolaway from all animalsIt seems that, gauging by the response fromHermanus Times’ readers, and research onthe internet, it is safer to rather stick to nor-mal sugar, instead of xylitol (a sweetener), forall animals – including dogs, cats, mice andbirds.A health shop owner inHermanus says one

of her clients was devastated when the sugarbirds in her garden died after she had addedxylitol to the water.According to studiespublishedon the inter-

net, xylitol is not safe for pets. One commenton the topic reads: “Xylitol has been found tobe toxic indogs for one, andbirdsare farmoresensitive to toxicity than dogs and cats. Donot feed anything with processed sugar in itto birds of any species.“Processed sugar works as a heavy toxin

and will outright kill smaller birds in a shorttime period (within a few minutes). This in-cludes themixes forhummingbirds andothernectar drinkers.”According to the Animal Poison Control

Centre (ASPCA), dogs that have ingestedfoods containing xylitol (greater than 100mil-ligrams of xylitol consumed per kilogram ofbodyweight) have presented with low bloodsugar (hypoglycemia), which can be life-threatening.”Sources: http://www.parrot-and-conure-

Enforce clearing of plotsConcerning the recent fire at Chanteclair towhich our fire and ambulance services for-tunately reacted to very efficiently (forwhich we thank them). As residents of Chanteclair we have writ-

ten on three occasions to the municipalityregarding the clearing of vacant plots nearto us, and further away. Few have beencleared and are definitely a fire hazard. We understand that the municipality re-

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Traffic chaos?Really? ‘Peakhour’ lasts15minutesThe article on the front page this week mademe smile. I have been driving my child fromHemel-en-Aarde Estate to Curro and back formore than two years now. The longest it hasever takenme there or back is maybe 10 min-utes, but even that I doubt. It is normally between 4 and 7 minutes

there, and the same back.Iwould suggest that people use theirwatch-

es before talking about 10 minutes to half-an-hour hold-ups. The whole of the ‘peak hour’takes no more than 15 minutes.

Furthermore, to use the excuse that yourchild gets to school late because of the trafficis lameatbest, andnonsenseatworst. It seemsthe same children (read parents) are alwaysthe ones who arrive late, and some childrenarenever late. If you leave late, yourchildwillbe late. Simple maths.Surely people can work out how long it

takes to get to school, and leave home accord-ingly? It shows a lack of respect for others, and disrupts school.

Chief tells what it takes to be a firefighterJAN-HENDRIK COETZER

Recent fires again highlighted theservicesrenderedbytheOverstrandFire, Rescue and Disaster Manage-ment firefighters. We spoke to Overstrand chief fire

officer, Lester Smith about what ittakes to be a firefighter and theirplans to establish a volunteer re-serve base.Currently there are 30 cadet fire-

fighters, six firefighters, one stationcommander, three divisional com-manders and a chief fire officer. He says it is vital that a firefighter

shouldbeable tohandle stressful sit-uations and be mentally fit.“Each firefighterwill handle each

situation differently. If they feel thattheir emotions are getting the betterpart of them, they can speak to theirofficerwhowill refer themto theem-ployment wellness program. Thechaplain is also called upon fromtime to time.”Firefighters also have to dealwith

the fact that in somesituations thereis nothing more that you can do.“A firefighter will always do their

best to prevent the destruction ofproperty. If your best wasn’t goodenough for an incident, you have toaccept it and move on. Professionalfirefighters will know when theyhavereachedtheir limitandareableto deal with any loss.”Outside the busy fire season it is

important for firefighters to stay fit.“There’s a range of activities

whichare completedwhen there areno incidents. Those range from fireand life safety education, public in-formation education and relations, emergency evacuation drills, fit-ness,aswellasin-houseandexternaltraining. During winter months the

firefighters prep by doing 2,4 kmruns, sit-ups and push-ups to pre-pare for the summer months.“A firefighter must be able to run

2,4 kmwithin12minutes.Firesafetyas well as plot clearing inspectionsare completed daily.“With therecent fire, therainonly

contained the fire, but did not extin-guish it, so the firefighters had to re-main on the scene until the Sundaymorning.”According to Smith a firefighter’s

job is very rewarding – albeit not al-ways a financial reward.“The most rewarding part for a

firefighter is to protect lives andproperty, especially after amajor in-cident like the recent Hawston andOnrus mountain fire. Another re-warding component of this job is asimple thank you from the commu-nity whose property or life was pro-tected.”Smith gives the following advice

to anyone who wants to become afirefighter: “To be a firefighter youmust be able to think on your feet asthe conditions will change withoutany warning.“Keep inmind that youare actual-

ly fightingmother nature, one of themost powerful natural forces.A fire-fighter must also realise that youcannot save all lives and all proper-ties all the time. He or she must beable tomoveonfromsucha loss.Youneed to have discipline, be patientand courageous and have initia-tive.”Overstrand Fire, Rescue and Dis-

asterManagementalsomakesuseofvolunteers. “We use volunteer fire-fighters who are part of the commu-nity. At the moment we only havevolunteers in the Pringle Bay andBetty’s Bay communities. Duringthe winter months we will try to es-tablish a volunteer reserve base forthe Overstrand.”
