Sandton police recently had a success following a drug bust in Bryanston where several kilograms of illegal narcotics worth millions of rands was found.
David Mothapo, communications offi cial of the Sandton Police Station said, “It was a joint operation between the police and the Narcotics Unit under The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation
(DPCI). The police and Narcotics Unit were working on information we received and conducted the operation.
“During the drug bust, two suspects were arrested for allegedly dealing drugs. During the operation, we found 7kg of ephedrine, 2.5kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of R2 million, and R4 250 in cash at an address on Arlington Road in Bryanston.”
The suspects are currently in custody and are yet to appear in court. Investigations continue.
The illegal contraband: 7kg of ephedrine and 2.5kg of cocaine.
The re-energised Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s K9 Narcotics Tactical Unit (K9 NTU) was re-established on 21 November, and a whopping 38 arrests were made in just four days. Here are the fi gures: 18 arrests for dealing in or possession of illicit substances 20 arrests for cases relating to hijacking, robberies, assault, unlicensed fi rearms, fraud and possession of stolen goods 7 hijacked or stolen vehicles recovered 5 unlicensed fi rearms recovered large amounts of cash, watches and electronics were seized and recovered.
The suspects were handed over to the South African Police Service, and the Department of Public Safety will do follow-ups on the cases reported.
“I am highly impressed at the speed and success that K9 NTU is achieving. The unit is taking an unprecedented victory and the city of Johannesburg is now fi nally gaining an upper hand in this war against crime,” said Michael Sun MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg.
Drugs worth an estimated R100 000 were seized. Sun went on to say that some of the successful busts were as a direct result of community involvement and added that the residents of Johannesburg should be proud of this momentous victory. “Whilst we celebrate this early success, we must not be fooled to believe that this is over, there is still much work to be done.
“The community must keep joining in the fi ght against drugs and crime.”
Another case of watch theft has come to light after a man was robbed of his Rolex and iPhone at Woodmead Retail Park.
Constable David Mothapo,
spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station said, “The incident occurred just before 2pm. The victim was getting out of his car in the shopping centre when he was approached by two males, one of whom was armed with a gun.”
Mothapo added that shots were
fi red, but no one was injured. “The suspects took his Rolex
watch and iPhone and fl ed in an Audi A4.”
A manager at the Pro Shop in Woodmead confi rmed the incident took place and that no one was hurt.

All informal money lenders who failed to register their businesses with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) before 11 November are now operating in contravention of the National Credit Act regulations. This was said in a statement by Nthupang Magolego, senior legal adviser of the regulator. The warning follows the Minister of the Department of Trade and Industry Rob Davies’ announcement months ago of the new regulation which requires all credit lenders,
regardless of the threshold of their credit lending, to register their businesses with the NCR.
Previously, only businesses with credit agreements above R500 000 or 100 credits were required to register. Magolego said from the deadline date, everyone ought to have registered, failing which there would be consequences on the lender as they would be operating unlawfully. She urged consumers seeking credit to verify the status of the lenders through the NCR’s website.Details: Lebohang Selibi 011 554 2722; [email protected]; www.ncr.org.za
More details have emerged about the murder of a Lonehill woman, allegedly by a domestic worker for the family, after the suspect was arrested at Florida Lake on 20 November.
According to the Netwerk24 website, Wilma van Tonder was stabbed to death in her home, allegedly by Norma Mudondo, who is believed to have been a domestic worker for the family, in front of Wilma’s fi ve-year-old son who was then left alone with her body for hours.
The article, which quoted Wilma’s brother Wilkus du Toit, said that after witnessing his mother’s murder, the boy then asked the attacker if she was going to kill him as well. The killer fl ed
the scene and the boy was left with his mother’s body for hours until his father, Mario van Tonder, arrived back at the house.
It also said that when the couple’s older son had not been picked up from school by 3pm that afternoon, someone called Mario, who rushed home to discover his wife’s body. The children are currently staying with their grandmother, who lives near the family’s home.
“One sees things like this in the movies, but this was a fi t of rage and it was terrifying,” Du Toit is quoted to have said.
The article claimed that, according to an unnamed source close to the Hawks investigation, Mudondo fl ed to KwaZulu-Natal for a few weeks before she returned to Johannesburg.
It carried on, saying that
according to the source, “We heard she was back in Johannesburg and was planning to hold a party at Florida Lake. Together with the Hawks, we set up a task team to arrest her. That’s when we got her.”
She made a brief appearance at Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 22 November, where bail was denied. She will next appear in court on 27 January.
Wednesday, 23 November would have been Wilma van Tonder’s 43rd birthday.
Her friends and family arranged a sit-down meal to mark the occasion and share memories of their loved one.
Douglasdale Police Station’s communications offi cer, Captain Mpho Kgasoane stated that only one of the children witnessed the brutal murder of their mother at their home.
Ntupang Magolego, senior legal adviser at the National Credit Regulator.
Douglasdale police are looking for three suspects in connection with a house robbery that took place on 9 August at 2.30am at a house in Nietgedacht, Douglasdale.
According to the head of communications at Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Kgaosane, it is alleged that the victim was sleeping and was awakened by three unknown men.
“Two of them were armed with small handguns and demanded cash and cellphones from her. They then took jewellery, a television, a laptop and a sound system, before leaving the house,” Kgaosane said. No shots were fi red and after the suspects left, the victim realised that her kitchen door had been forced open.
“Two of the suspects were described to be between the ages of 25 and 30, both were slender, wearing beanies and both were armed and spoke English. One suspect is reported to be light in complexion, wearing tracksuit pants, while the other, dark in complexion, was wearing a dark tracksuit top,” she said.
Kgaosane urged that if a community member has information regarding these suspects, they should contact, Detective Constable Mthembu on 072 822 3662.

Johannesburg Central police arrested a 28-year-old male for rape at Dell Mansion Court on the corner of De Villiers and Claim streets on 2 November at 7pm.
According to Captain Xoli Mbele, it is alleged that the suspect
raped an 11-year-old mentally challenged girl at the above-mentioned address on the same day he was arrested.
Mbele mentioned that according to the information they received, the suspect normally helps the mother of the victim by carrying her buckets when she boards a taxi.
“The cousin of the victim
[allegedly] found the suspect on top of the victim,” Mbele said.
It is claimed that the suspect threatened to beat the victim if she related her story to anyone. Police were contacted and the suspect was apprehended. Investigations are underway and the suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

Despite the recent heavy rains, large parts of the country are still facing water shortages as a result of a crippling drought.
Spokesperson for Budget Insurance, Graham Craggs weighed in on the topic. “Residents are not only being asked to be frugal with water, but Joburgers will be charged a tariff if their monthly water consumption exceeds 20 kilolitres of water,” Craggs said.
He added that the water restrictions imposed by various municipalities still applied and community members were urged to use this precious resource sparingly, and to cut their water usage by 15 per cent.
Craggs said homeowners would pay 10 per cent extra on consumption between 20 000 litres and 30 000 litres per month, 20 per cent extra on consumption between 30 000 litres and 40 000 litres per month, and 30 per cent extra for consumption above 40 000 litres. “This is a signifi cant amount of money to add to your monthly bills. This, plus the fact that the country is in a water crisis, should motivate consumers to be frugal with their water usage.”
As a starting point, he suggested community members adhere to level 2 water restrictions if they have been imposed in their municipality. This means residents may not water or irrigate their gardens between 6am and 6pm (this is because water just evaporates), use municipal water to fi ll their pools, or use hosepipes to wash cars or hose down paved areas.Craggs advised on some day-to-day water-consumption tips to ensure better water usage, and to prevent extra tariffs: Fix faults in plumbing throughout your property. A leaking tap can waste thousands of litres of water each year. Put a brick in your toilet and leave it to mellow. Toilets use more water than is necessary, and fl ushing can be unnecessary. A brick will substantially reduce water use. Don’t fl ush the toilet unnecessarily, and rather dispose of items such as tissues and cotton wool in the rubbish bin. Save electricity. Eskom uses three per cent of South Africa’s water, so saving electricity will ease that burden on the environment. Shower instead of bathing, and shorten showers and teeth brushing. Get your children to shower together instead of separately. Turn off the tap while brushing teeth. After brushing your teeth, use a glass of water to rinse your mouth. Do not refi ll the swimming pool, rather use a pool cover to prevent evaporation.
Drought still on
The ducks at the feature dam in Fourways Mall, seen in this puddle, have been observed by the public swimming in dirty water.
The ducks that have made their home near the Adventure Golf course in Fourways Mall have been moved to a new home at the Indaba Hotel after residents expressed concern at their welfare during the mall’s renovation.
In a Facebook post by Fourways resident, Jennifer Came on the ‘I Love Fourways’ page, public attention was drawn to the fact that the ducks living on the landscape feature dam were doing so in dirty water, which is surrounded by construction as the mall is being renovated.
There was also a concern that an Environmental Management Plan voluntarily undertaken by Accelerate Properties, the company responsible for the mall’s redevelopment, found that the water in the dam had an e-coli content 3 300 times higher than the Department of Water and Sanitation’s standard, as a result of a leaking sewer pipe underneath the dam.
Others quickly agreed that the duck’s well-being might be at risk, and that’s when the Fourways Improvement District Initiative stepped in.
“What the Fourways Initiative does is look after the community,” explained co-founder Nic Papas. “I was online [a few days ago] and I saw a post discussing the ducks at
the mall. I then took it upon myself to
approach Accelerate Properties and ask if they would be willing to let the ducks be resettled. I also approached the Indaba Hotel with the hope that they would let [the ducks] be moved there.”
Sharon Hunink, marketing and sales manager of the Indaba Hotel, said they quickly agreed for the birds to be relocated to a site on the property, a move that she hopes will happen about 12 December when the hotel is quiet enough for the animals to settle well.
“We have two dams on the property,” she explained. “And we are more than willing to adopt them.
“Our chef even offered to rush out and buy duck food this morning,” Hunink laughed.
Margi Brocklehurst of the Friends of Free Wildlife, a non-profi t organisation in Kyalami, has been approached by the Indaba management to help with the rehoming. While she is eager to help out, Brocklehurst did express concern that the animals may not necessarily be successfully rehomed. “We must remember that these animals are able to remove themselves – they can fl y. The issue with rehoming any wild animal, but particularly with bird species, is that they might just decide to head back to where they think of as ‘home’,” she said. “It is also extremely diffi cult to catch
and move animals if they are not used to human interaction.”
In the meantime, Accelerate Properies has vowed to undertake the repair of the dam to halt such a dangerous leak, and has stated that the ducks have access to fresh water in the form of other dams on the William Nicol Drive side of the property. Head of marketing at Fourways Mall, Zoe van Onselen, said, “As our local community knows, Fourways Mall is undergoing a major redevelopment. The development and expansion of the existing Mall does not require any environmental authorizations from the authorities, as it is taking place within the existing development foot print. Even though the revamp does not require an environmental approval, the Developer has voluntarily chosen to implement an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the works in order to monitor and correct any environmental incidences. As part of the monitoring, the Developer chose to sample the water quality of the Fourways Mall landscape feature dam. The results of the sample showed a high e-coli
count in the dam, 3300 times higher than the Department of Water and Sanitation standard.”
van Onselen further added, “The ducks on site, do currently have fresh water available to them adjacent to the adventure golf area, and on William Nicol.”
Ward 102 councillor, David Potter would like to keep residents in the loop with regards to the progress and problems in his ward.
“My workload has increased substantially, as residents who had lost hope with the previous administration have now raised their hands and made contact about their unresolved issues and ideas.
“The Mayor [Herman Mashaba] and his executive have been working hard over the past few weeks, understanding the City, the issues at hand, which projects to keep and which to dispose of, the way forward as well as implementing a ton of much-needed forensic audits.”
According to Potter, there is a
call from residents for immediate service delivery and there is a great need for change in numerous sectors.
He believes that an adjustment of budgets is required, as well as a clear look at the Service Delivery Charter and Service Level Agreements. “We need a change in City offi cials’ attitudes and an increase in staff numbers and resource availability, just to name a few.”
Potter highlighted a few of the top issues that he believes the City has to deal with.
He believes that the metered services contract that was not renewed, has posed numerous problems.
He is distressed by a lack of attention to the maintenance at public facilities such as
sports complexes, libraries and community centres as a result of maintenance contracts that have not been signed for several months.
“Another issue is the lack of street light poles due to a supply contract of such not having been signed for over a year.
The Randburg Walk-in Centre upgrade, having started months and months ago, but not having been completed for unknown reasons. The delayed response to electrical outages due to the promised decentralisation of the City Power stores which never happened.”
He concluded that residents need to please bear with the City as change takes place. “Please continue to Look and Log your issues via the existing channels available to you.”Details: www.lookandlog.co.za

During a divorce, there are typically heated arguments over who gets what and these disputes can often lead to heartache and disappointment.
Battles over the custody of children, houses, cars or holiday homes are quite ordinary. However, who gets the beloved family dog or the gorgeous cat and kittens, which both parties have grown fond of? Can this lead to a custody battle over pets?
Attorney Claire Waldeck, who looked deeper into the matter said, “Custody battles over pets are not completely abnormal. Britney Spears and her ex-husband, Kevin Federline battled over their dogs during their divorce. Drew Barrymore demanded custody of her labrador, Flossie. American television star, Jon Gosselin lost custody of his two
German shepherds to his ex-wife,” explained Waldeck.
She cited one divorce case in South Africa, where a couple was on the brink of settling and parting ways. However, the matter fell apart as an agreement could not be reached over the custody of their Staffordshire terrier.
Waldeck highlighted that pets are assets and the owners would need to consider who bought the pet as that spouse would technically be the owner. “It is a matter which could be dealt with by drawing up an [prenuptial agreement] to regulate it up front, which is what people should do. The downside is, pets may not outlast the marriage,” she said.
It is important to note that if this agreement, made by a couple before they marry concerning the ownership of their assets should the marriage fail, is not drawn up, the matter becomes more complex and would not be regulated if a
divorce occurs. “During a divorce, the courts
always consider what is in the best interests of the child or children born of the marriage. Similarly, we are of the view that the court will give due consideration to what is in the best interests of the animals,” she added.
“For example, if the pet in question is an older dog with a severe limp, the owner who has a house with no stairs and has time to nurse and care for the frail animal, will take preference over the other owner,” she said.
Although Waldeck has not personally dealt with any matters of this nature, she concluded, “It must be heartbreaking to lose custody of a beloved pet that is often closer than a family member. Perhaps couples could even agree on visitation schedules to resolve the matter and ensure that both parties can enjoy the company of the pet,” she suggested.
The wedding season is here and more and more couples are getting married.
John Manyike, head of Financial Education at Old Mutual, offered advice on how to stay within budget and still have that dream wedding.
He stated, “[When planning a wedding] it’s important not to get so carried away that you end up forgetting to stay within your fi nancial means and forgetting to make responsible preparations for your fi nancial future together. Before taking this big step, every couple needs to ensure that they tick, not only all the boxes on their wedding plan, but also all the boxes on a fi nancial plan.”
In terms of the types of marriages and their fi nancial implications, he offered advice for couples who are drafting a prenuptial agreement. “Marriage in community of property (Cop)... means all the assets and liabilities that you each had before the marriage become jointly owned when you get married. Marriage under customary law is regarded as being in community of property.”
He supplied details on getting married out of community of property which can be slightly more complex.
A couple can get married in community of property with or
without an accrual. “An antenuptial contract
(ANC) without accrual... must be drawn up by a lawyer and there are costs involved.
The contract states that your assets and liabilities are kept separate. In the event of a divorce or death, each party leaves with whatever they brought into the marriage plus what they accumulated in their personal capacity during the marriage.
“This contract is appropriate for couples who have been married before and who may have children from previous relationships or where one of the parties is in business or acquired excessive debts prior to the marriage. It is also used to protect assets where one or both of you may become personally liable for the debts of a business venture.”
Antenuptial with the accrual system work differently.
With this option, assets and liabilities are also kept separate, however, if a party to the marriage acquired less growth in his or her estate than his or her spouse during the marriage, he or she will be entitled to receive half of the difference in growth of your two estates.
“The type of marriage system you choose determines how credit providers will assess your future credit applications such as buying a house, a car or your access to credit in general.”
Custody battle over petsCustody battles during a divorce may also involve the family pets.
Following a two-year process of deliberations, investigation and research, prompted by the Medical Innovation Bill, an announcement was made on 23 November in Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Health that the Department of Health will soon regulate access to medicinal cannabis for prescribed health conditions.
This is a victory for every South African unnecessarily suffering because of HIV/Aids, severe chronic pain, severe muscle spasms, vomiting or wasting arising from cancer, or severe seizures resulting from epileptic conditions where other treatment options have failed or have intolerable side effects.
IFP Chief Whip in Parliament, Narend Singh, lauded this announcement as a victory for his late colleague, Dr Mario Oriani-Ambrosini, who introduced the Medical Innovation Bill (MIB) in the midst of his own fi ght with terminal cancer. Following his death in 2014, Singh reintroduced the MIB to ensure that this vital issue would stay on the table.
Speaking after the announcement by the Medicines Control Council and the Department of Health in Committee on 23 November,
Singh said, "This heralds a great step forward for public access and research into the use of medicinal cannabis. I feel a great sense of relief.
"I must thank the department for taking up this issue with such passionate concern for our people. What matters now is that the department ensures that access to medicinal cannabis will not be restricted to the rich, but that anyone who needs it will be able to afford it, and get it."
The Department has indicated that the new regulatory framework could be available as early as the end of January 2017 for stakeholder comment, and could be implemented as soon as April 2017. Clearly inspired by the sense of unity within the committee, Singh said, "Today I saw MPs across the political spectrum join together for the common good of all South Africans. The introduction of Dr Oriani-Ambrosini's Bill in 2014 galvanised a concerted effort by all stakeholders, the result being that we will shortly have a working blueprint and regulatory framework for access to medicinal cannabis in South Africa. We look forward to seeing that happen."
MEC for the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo has rubbished suggestions that the provincial government is disposing of assets to raise funds.
"Gauteng government is not broke, these assets are disposed of because they have been identifi ed to not be at the core business of government," Mamabolo explained.
The MEC hosted a media briefi ng where it was revealed that 17 immovable assets owned by the provincial government would go on auction. According to the MEC, the identifi ed properties were not contributing to the generation of revenue for the province and would be put to better use if they were sold to the public or interested entities.
The fi rst public auction will offi cially open on 5 December and close on 12 December. Mamabolo also announced that the method of disposal would not be the traditional live auction where potential buyers were gathered under one roof and the property was auctioned in a matter of minutes.
"The province has opted for an online auction disposal methodology," he said. "This includes provision for an Internet-based platform for a pre-determined period of time with each lot sequentially closing at a given time. We are convinced that
‘Legal’ dagga Government properties on auction
MEC for the Department of Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo says he wants the provincial properties to be disposed of in the most transparent manner.
the online auction will provide for a transparent, auditable, convenient and competitive asset disposal process."
He also highlighted that the properties identifi ed for disposal would be sold in their current condition on a voetstoots basis, meaning that the province would not undertake any improvements on the identifi ed properties.
Potential buyers were encouraged to register on the auctioneer's website – www.tirhani.co.za – before the offi cial opening of the auction.
The offi cial residence of the Premier of Gauteng Province, situated in Bryanston will also be auctioned during this period. Potential buyers are encouraged to contact the auctioneer to view the property or obtain further details.
Mamabolo assured the public that the disposal process would be done in a transparent, accountable and fair manner. "We will make sure that the process does not favour any one person over another," Mamabolo said, adding that politicians and provincial government employees would not be allowed to purchase any of those properties.
As some properties were occupied by tenants, the MEC said his department was taking steps to ensure that the occupants were given a fair opportunity to participate in the process. He mentioned that tenants who have expressed an interest in purchasing would not have to participate in the auctions, but will be given the right of fi rst refusal to either buy the properties they are currently occupying outright for the sworn open market valuation value, or to match the price of the highest bidder at the close of the auction.
Tirhani Mabunda, the appointed auctioneer, highlighted that online auctions were nothing new. He said his company had been running a number of online auctions, including those of government departments. He said they would give assistance to all prospective bidders. Details: www.tirhani.co.za
After the fl ash fl oods that Joburg experienced a few weeks ago, something amazing happened.
While the devastation the fl oods left behind them was tragic, to say the least, and while so many lost so much, Joburgers really pulled together as a community to help those affected.
While we sometimes have the reputation of being unfriendly, uncaring and not community orientated, we truly proved to the world that when it counts, we are there for one another.
The news of the little girl who slipped from her father's grip in Alex and fell into the raging Jukskei River was heartbreaking, but watching the Alex community comfort her parents in their time of need and hearing about the rescue teams who left no stone unturned in their search for her, gave me a sense of hope.
A young couple, whose dog ran away during the fl oods, also felt the magic of our beautiful community uniting to help them in their ongoing bid to fi nd their beloved Toboe, a white pit bull terrier. The fl oods and the havoc that followed was not a happy time for our community, but
my faith in humanity and in the beautiful people who live in our city is stronger than ever. There have been donations of food to those in need as well as to those emergency staff members who assisted the community in their time of need.
My call on the community is to not lose their compassion and willingness to help others. While the water may have subsided, there are still so many people who are in need – emotionally and physically.
As we all start planning our December holidays, please think of those people who have not returned home for years because they cannot afford it. Think of those who are not sure where their next meal is going to come from, never mind the fact that they will most likely be alone and cold on Christmas day.
I am not trying to make anyone feel guilty about taking a holiday, or saying you should hand over your hard-earned money to those less fortunate. My suggestion is simple, think about these people and do what you can, when you can ... even if your support is a simple good morning smile.

Fourways Review asked Joburg residents what they thought about 'Pastor Doom', also known as Lethebo Rabalago, who is a self-proclaimed 'prophet' who sprays Doom insect killer to cure his congregants of illnesses. Here's what residents had to say…
Joburg residents have their say
HARVEST MUGOVHANI: People no longer believe in God. They lack faith in God and are looking for anything to help them through desperate times.
UNATHI MYEKI: To be honest, what he’s doing to people is wrong. Doom is for killing insects not spraying on people. That pastor deserves to be investigated and questioned.
THEODORE MOYANE: The situation in our country has left people feeling hopeless. And these pastors who have suddenly shown up, use religion as a means to give people false hope. It’s ridiculous. They’re turning religion into a business and having their way with others.
BABALWA THAKATSHANA: I just think people are hungry for the word of God. They’ve become desperate and he’s [pastor] being very opportunistic. I don’t think people are truly reading the word of God. Doom is supposed to kill insects. It’s causing so much damage.
DUSTIN VAN WYK: As funny as it initially appears, it’s always sad to see people’s vulnerability and desperation being exploited in public spaces. If we can educate people on the dangers of online scams, surely we can create public awareness about the dangers of false pastors.

With just a few days left of Movember, executive director of 21st Century – a remuneration and reward consultancy, Bryden Morton shared his take on the global movement.
Morton explained that it was more than growing moustaches – it was an opportunity for the company to give back to the community, raise awareness and funds as well as pull together for a good cause.
"Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer. A few of us participated in Movember for the fi rst time in 2014 to raise funds. Last year, we got on board for just one day and managed to raise R2 500, so this year, we decided that we needed to up the ante," Morton said.
The team from 21st Century, which is based in Rosebank, pledged to raise R4 000, the team is already on R4 403 and have upped their target to R5 000.
Morton added that the chief
executive offi cer, Chris Blair was also on board and has donated R1 000 to the cause, while the directors of the company have donated a further R1 000. "By raising funds through a company, we can remind each other every single day what we are doing and why we are doing it.
"It is so important to know that
you work in a place where people care."
Morton further stated that so far, Movember has been a gratifying experience for his entire team as they compete with companies around the country to bring in the funds. "The question is, who will have the best the moustache by November 30th?"
Movember is a global movement that sees 30 days of action to bring about men’s health awareness.

Week 49 29 November 2016
Toyota CH-R joins crossover partyI’M IN Spain, more specifically its capital
Madrid. It’s an amazing city, full of stunning old buildings, historic architecture and rich with
heritage. There is however a vast uprising of modern
buildings and a new technological wave of improvement rushing over the city. This then makes it the perfect setting for Toyota to introduce its all-new C-HR, a car it claims rates as one of its most important yet.
C-HR stands for Coupe High Rider and it is Toyota’s answer to the Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3 and others in the compact crossover segment. It is also a segment that Toyota has ignored for quite some time, so has the wait been worth it?
grabs the attention of just about everyone that glances at it. Driving around the city, it’s clear to see how people actually stop and look at the car, albeit with a confused look on their faces. Confused because having such a stylish body wear a Toyota badge is a bit out of the ordinary.
The C-HR looks striking from just about every
angle. It features many, prominent character lines, strong features and distinctive styling elements which all blend together to create a modern, aggressive yet unique looking vehicle.
The front end is rounded and the face of the car is unmistakable. LED day-time running lights resemble that found on the new RAV4.
which gives this car a styling advantage over its competitors.
At the rear, I particularly like the steeply raked
there is a slight resemblance to Honda Civic with regards to the tail lights. I really thought that the design would be too cluttered, too busy but it’s not. Every element compliments the other, it is sporty and attractive at the same time.
The interior has been designed around the philosophy of what Toyota calls Sensual Tech. This new design combines high-tech functionality with fashionable style.
It embodies a driver focused area within an airy, expansive cabin space. The dashboard is split by a stylish detailing line which on higher spec models
compliment this feature.
The overall feel of the interior is of quality with very little buttons which reduces confusion and clutter. Just about everything can be controlled from the large dashboard mounted screen. I also like the neatly designed multifunction steering wheel.
The C-HR is built on the same platform as the latest iteration of the Prius. Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform (TNGA) utilises the brands new engineering approach, which sees the engine positioned lower in the bay, giving a better centre of gravity, better body rigidity and lower overall vehicle height. This frees up space inside too. Rear passengers won’t feel cramped and the boot space is decent.
At the international launch, I got the opportunity

Out on the rather narrow Spanish country roads,
inspired DNA as it is really fun to drive. Performance is not mind blowing, however,
the little turbo motor is eager. As for ride and handling, Toyota engineers spent many months in
out just what exactly they want from a car. Much attention was then given to the steering and suspension aspects of the car which result in a sharp and engaging drive.
After spending two days in Spain with the Toyota C-HR, I am excited to see how it will be received by the South African public. Word is that dealer-ships already have a waiting list for this car.
As is the norm and due to pricing, our cars will differ from these that I have driven regarding

IT’S NOT often that vehicle manufacturers choose one media event to launch two completely different models.
Recently though, Volkswagen took advantage of a busy year-end to launch the diesel version of its superb Passat, while also allowing the motoring media to have a go in the refreshed up! city car.
The little up! in my opinion at least, is a great little car, but the problem was that when VW launched it at the beginning of 2015, it was a two-door model which drastically reduced its appeal amongst those who wanted a small yet practical vehicle.
Later in 2015 a four-door up! was revealed along with a crossover version which seemed to bolster sales, resulting in around 4 800 models occupying local roads.
VW has facelifted this micro-model which now has new headlights complete with daytime running LEDs, a reshaped bumper and bonnet, new wheel options, side mirrors with integrated indicators like its Polo sibling as well as redesigned rear lights and rear diffuser.
Inside, the changes include printed dashboard styling panels, optional ambient lighting and leather clad multi-function steering wheel and gear knob for the more expensive models in the range.
The same three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine with 55kW/95Nm is retained for all models. Up at altitude, if you’ll excuse the pun, the little car does struggle a bit, however the fuel returns are

The motoring media has been impressed with
of the Year competition for 2017 so the addition of a diesel derivative can only make the range stronger.
The 2.0-litre turbodiesel now fitted to the Passat is an all-new powerplant which develops 130kW/ 350Nm and is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox.
This is certainly my new pick within the range,
it simply suits the Passat so well, there’s ample torque for overtaking and enough power to keep

In an attempt to simplify the Passat range, VW has condensed the options available on these models while making some standard. There are now two trim levels, Luxury and Executive.
The Luxury gets LED headlights, tri-zone Climatronic air conditioner and heated Vienna Leather seats. The top-of-the-range Executive has App Connect, Nappa leather seats as well as cornering LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and the R-Line Styling Package that adds a new front grille, side skirt and 18-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of optional features, there are now packages available such as; The Tow Package (towbar, trailer assist and park assist); Safety Package (Adaptive Cruise Control and Head-up display); Park Package (Keyless access, automatic boot, rear view camera and park assist); Park Package with Area View (Area view, keyless

DROP CAR PRICE TO AVOID PROMOS
Dear Editor
I have just been reading my weekly Autodealer. I note with interest and some amusement that just about all the dealers of new vehicles are able to give thousands of Rands in various special offers to encourage me to buy a new car; R85 000 off this, R20 000 plus a free scooter or trailer off that, R40 000 free holidays, ‘’have it today, pay nothing for months’’ deals. The list is endless!
The reason for this, I suppose, is because sales of new vehicles have been really bad in recent months due to our drastic economy. But if things
are so bad and they have not been making any money, how come they are suddenly able to give cash away like this now?
Perhaps if they weren’t charging such ridiculous

TEAMWORK NEEDED TO MAKE OUR ROADS SAFER
Dear Editor
The Department of Transport is still determined to send strong messages to all road users to change their behaviour.
People must ensure their own safety and the safety of others on our roads. There is nothing peculiar with all the public roads. Let us get out of this mentality of naming and blaming roads such as Death Road, Ghost Road or Do or Die Road. We are to blame ourselves.
The road does not move or swerve, it is only

IN THE EYE OF THE STORM
Dear Editor
Expats don’t know what they are missing! One of the things my kids in New Zealand hanker after the most, are our summer storms.
Driving from Hartbeespoort Dam on the big storm day last week, it was like being in the centre of a surround sound with a movie playing. First the clouds rolled in over Hekpoort with the sun glistening though the distant sheets of rain in the most spectacular fashion.
As we turned south, the closer we got to Johannesburg, the greater the pyrotechnics became. What a privilege it was to drive towards the panorama in front of us as great forks of summer lightning tore the atmosphere apart in a positive blitzkrieg of electrical splendour.
When the hail came we couldn’t hear ourselves scream in the thrilling din. In seconds everything was white as we inched along with hazard lights
to stop dead.

BMW 7-series gets the plug

STILL VERY much a new concept in South Africa albeit one slowly gaining in momentum, BMW South Africa used the backdrop of the Mother City to unveil the latest addition to its range of plug-in hybrid vehicles, the new 740e.
Slotting in between the 740i and 750i in the 7-series range, the 740e, which originally premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year, joins the recently launched X5 xDrive 40e as the second version of BMW’s iPerformance sub-brand and the fourth electric or hybrid model after the i3 and i8.

As with the standard model, the 740e can

Connected to an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox, BMW claims the 740e will sprint from rest to 100 km/h in 5.4 secs and on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h. More crucially though, the 740e can travel 48 km on a single charge at speeds up to 140km/h with the combined fuel consumption being rated at a rather optimistic 2.1 litres/100 km and emissions at 45 g/km.
In addition to being fully charged in just under three hours using BMW’s i Wallbox, or just over four by means of a normal 220 volt socket, the 740e also boasts four driving modes allowing for

Of course this can be changed by virtue of the system’s four modes; ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT ADAPTIVE, that adjust throttle response, the ride, gear changes and steering response depending on preference.

750i it might be, the “little” 2.0-litre four-pot, does a remarkable job of hauling the 740e along, with the instant 250Nm torque boost from the electric motor dispelling any notion of it being a luxo-barge with very little go.
Where things start to become tricky though is the 740e’s price. At R1 431 500 for the standard model, it comes in at R25 000 more than the 730d and a whopping R52 500 dearer than the 740i.
Yes, its introduction based on the local success of the i3 and i8 will no doubt please buyers looking to go green in style and comfort, but for now, there is no getting away from the fact that a fully loaded examples of the 740i and 730d makes for a more compelling buy.

TAKING over from where your predecessor left off isn't the easiest thing in the world to do, especially if he or she has built up a solid reputation many found hard to fault… take our new Public Protector for example.
In pretty much the same vein, the Toyota Auris faced an uphill battle when it replaced the RunX as the brand’s compact family hatch some ten years ago.
Despite being based on the same underpinnings as the E150 generation Corolla, as well as being bigger and offering more grunt than the RunX, the Auris, its name being derived from the Latin word aurum meaning gold, somehow never got close to matching its forbearer’s popularity, with the introduction of an extensive facelift in 2010 seemingly doing little.
Now into its second generation and following a mid-life refreshment last year, the Auris had the chance to show why it deserves to follow in the wheel tracks of theRunx when a rather striking Metallic Blue 1.6 Xi recently arrived for a few days.
The bane of many a motoring scribe has been the touchy subject of Toyota’s often conservative
interesting touches compared to some of its rivals. As part of the facelift, the Auris received a
bonnet meeting a much thinner grille embossed with a chrome Toyota badge, new headlights, a slightly revised front bumper and clear lens rear taillight clusters.
Being the second tier model in the Auris range above the entry-level 1.3 X, the Xi also receives extensive colour coding on the door handles,
bumpers and mirrors, a boot spoiler, sporty 16-inch alloy wheels and indicators integrated into the mirrors.
While hardly a design classic, the somewhat disapproving drop snout appearance is a world away from the previous model’s bland facade, although it
of the new Renault Mégane or the understated classiness of the Volkswagen Golf.
Step inside, the Xi interior resonates more on the functional side with easy to make out switches and good quality plastics used on the dash. However,
the use of faux carbon inserts on the passenger side could have been substituted with more durable plastics.
Although some buyers adverse to the trend of touchscreen infotainment displays would appreciate the Xi’s touch button setup with a rather cool looking blue backlighting hue, they are likely to be less than impressed with space in the rear.
Popping the driver’s seat into my preferred position, very little in the way of legroom remained to accommodate my 1.84 m frame in comfort despite acceptable levels of head room. No complaints were however attributed to space in the front with boot space also being commendable at 360 litres.
In addition, the storing of valuables is taken care of by means of a cubby underneath the HVAC controls, deep door pockets with a bottle holder each, a compartment between the front seats which doubles up as an armrest, and two cupholders on the centre console.
Expected to be the volume seller in the Auris range, standard spec is somewhat on the spartan side compared to rivals from Honda or Opel, but nonetheless includes a four-speaker sound system with Bluetooth, Aux and USB, leather wrapped
steering wheel with volume controls, electric windows all around, height adjustable steering wheel, electric mirrors, auto lock / unlock doors, six airbags and ABS with EBD.
the Auris aesthetically, where it really should have made a bigger impact is underneath the bonnet. Instead of the 1.2 litre turbocharged engine used in Europe, the Xi uses Toyota’s stalwart normally aspirated 1.6 developing 97 kW and 160 Nm of torque.
It might sound strong on paper compared to the Ford Focus 1.0 litre EcoBoost’s 92 kW and the Mazda3 1.6’s 77 kW, but at altitude at least, it simply feels underpowered and has to be revved to maintain forward momentum.
This means constant shifting of the six-speed
manual box which, despite featuring a slick action, is hampered by a much too high clutch bite point, resulting in the Auris being easy to stall on pull away or at the lights.
As part of the refresh, Toyota have also fettled with the Auris’ suspension and mapping of the electric power steering for enhanced levels of feedback. The end result is a comfortable and well dampened ride with good levels of feedback through the wheel.
of “doing exactly what it says on the tin”, the Auris 1.6 Xi makes for a competent and honest package
reservations on the lack of power remains, it is unlikely to face the greater percentage of buyers who value simplicity over the complexity of small displacement turbo engines.

Toyota Auris goes straight to the point >> CCHARL BOSCH
THE KIA Cerato has become a familiar sight on South Africa roads. From the sedan to the popular hatch and even the Koup, this model has offered no frills motoring to the public since 2004. I recently had a chance to drive the updated version through Johannesburg and Pretoria.
WHAT’S NEW?The Korean-built third generation Cerato has
been with us since 2013 and as is customary within the automotive realm, the vehicle has received a few upgrades to both modernise and help it better compete within its segment, while simultaneously implementing changes as a response to customer feedback.
In terms of exterior changes, keen observers will note that all models get a black or gloss black trim for the so called ‘tiger-nose’ grille, while there are also new headlamps, a new front bumper and foglights in addition to a reshaped bonnet. The sedan gets new rear bumper and taillight design as well as new alloy wheels.
Inside, there have also been changes with an emphasis on a more premium look and feel. There are new materials used on the dashboard, door trims, centre fascia and console hood with a silver and piano black theme throughout the cabin.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT CHANGESFor those who opt for the automatic version,
there is now a Drive Mode Select (DMS) system with Normal, Sport and Comfort driving modes which changes steering feel. These front-wheel drive models are still available with the same range of 1.6 and 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engines, albeit with more emphasis placed on the smaller motor as per market demand.
As such, the 1.6 produces 95 kW while the 2.0 has 118 kW on tap. Model-wise, the 1.6 is available in base EX trim with the option of hatch or sedan bodystyles, as well as a manual or automatic gearbox, while the previous 2.0 SX makes way for a 1.6 SX with the sedan being auto only and the hatch equipped exclusively with the manual gearbox.
Only available in EX trim now, the 2.0 mirrors its 1.6 equivalent with the option of a sedan or hatch body, and a manual or automatic gearbox.
WHAT DOES THE BADGE MEAN?If you’re like me, the words EX and SX mean
nothing. So I’ll try and sum up the range like so; the 1.6 EX is more basic with features such as air-conditioning, automatic light control, Bluetooth connectivity / MP3 / iPod / USB, steering wheel-mounted controls for audio and cruise control, front
and rear electric windows and LED daytime running lights. The 2.0 SX gets the same equipment but adds an upgraded instrument cluster and leather upholstery.
The range-topping 1.6 SX, in addition to the features on the EX, gets HID xenon headlamps, reverse camera, smart key with stop / start button, a smart welcome lighting system, front and rear park distance control, a TFT LCD cluster and automatic dual-zone air-conditioning.
DRIVING IMPRESSIONThe third generation Cerato has always been
a solid product and the facelift builds upon that
commendable on freeways, the engines have reasonable fuel returns and the overall quality in
this segment. It won’t exactly set your pants on
reasonable comfort. WARRANTY AND SERVICE

It’s always good to know the history behind the things that we ride and drive on a daily basis. So I decided to have a look at the illustrious history of BMW Motorrad since I’ve been using the trusty F 800 R to complete my daily commute for the past month or so.
Before I get in to the history of this marque, allow me to delve in to some of my experiences with the F 800 R, particularly in terms of fuel consumption as I’ve been riding this bike to work instead of using my Subaru WRX STI.
Now I know what you’re thinking, commuting by
however, even when compared to a budget car, the bike stacks up favourably.
I have put R500 worth of fuel into the bike and have covered around 700km, and I still have fuel left as I write this. But as I said a few weeks back, if you’re considering a motorcycle as a means of transportation, remember the pros and cons and think about it very carefully before taking the plunge.
For those who aren’t aware of the BMW brand’s
shop as an aircraft engine manufacturer, with production commencing before the advent of the First World War.
Yet their new-found business was soon stopped as the Treaty of Versailles banned not only the German Air Force, but also the manufacturing of
the aircraft engines, BMW instead turned their focus to producing air brakes, industrial engines,

Social side of summerJoburg is no stranger to tapas-style dining ... but it’s safe to say that molecular gastronomy master chef Marthinus Ferreira and his right-hand woman, Jess McKinnon, have given new meaning to this way of eating at The Grazing Room with the introduction of their summer menu. Light dishes like lemon and courgette arancini balls, tom yum calamari with coconut, peanuts and spring onion, and beer-battered prawns with red pepper chutney and avocado mousse are perfect for celebrating the social side of the season, while the cool and creamy Eton mess with papaya, passion fruit and orange blossom chantilly is so distinctly delicate that you certainly won’t want to share! Pair these perfectly prepared dishes with a glass (or bottle) of one of the fi ne wines the restaurant has on off er, and you’re in for the ultimate social meal – best enjoyed with that special someone! The art of wineNormandie Est. 1693 is one of only 29 original French Huguenot-settled farms in the famous Franschhoek Valley of the Cape Winelands. It recently introduced an innovative new collection of wines ... one that uniquely marries the art of winemaking with the love of art. The Clarington collection consists of six varietals ... a Merlot, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Blend, a Chardonnay, a Chenin Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Rosé. We’ve tried (and thoroughly enjoyed!) these really pleasing wines. And we’re raving about the gorgeous packaging – the high gloss, organic ink coating, infl uenced by traditional colour-blocking, is deceptively simple, carefully considered and beautifully crafted. At less than R100 a bottle, it’s aff ordable enough for everyday drinking, and special enough to impress your guests! Details: www.normandie1693.com
Food and festivitiesDish after dish that comes out of the kitchen at the classically opulent Mauritian restaurant, Parc Fermé, is simply fl awless. On the new menu there’s the pan-fried seared scallops gratinated in a lemon and cheese sauce, steamed line fi sh with ginger, lemon grass and sesame oil, and, of course, our favourite, the seafood tagine for two – a feast of clams, mussels, prawns, calamari and fi sh cooked in a light tomato gravy. To end the meal on a sweet note, make sure you tuck into the chocolate fondant with a molten middle or the caramel and toff ee crunch cheesecake topped with chopped nuts and chocolate ice cream. Totally delish! If you’re still looking for a place to go for Christmas lunch, you’ll be delighted to know that the restaurant is off ering a special set lunch menu on the day at R495 an adult and R120 a child under 12, that boasts traditional smoked gammon and roast turkey, chocolate and egg-nog mousse cake and other festive favourites. Bruno’s back!Yes, you read that right. If you love jamming to Bruno Mars and his cool tunes (honestly, who doesn’t?), then you’ll love his latest album, 24K Magic. First off , we have to say that, to us, it sounds like he had a lot of fun making the album ... especially on the title track! 24K Magic has a great beat, it’s catchy and you can’t help wanting to dance to it. Don’t forget to check out the music video too (those dance moves of his are killer!). Another track we like is Versace on the Floor – this song is much slower and has an old-school R&B vibe to it ... needless to say, we love it! If you’re expecting something distinctive from Mr Mars, but still in line with his usual, smooth style, you’ll fi nd it here! Available on iTunes.

Unity College hosted its annual extravaganza of talent.
This year’s theme was a Splash of Colour and the audience was entertained under a starlit sky by the schoolchildren.
From dance to hip-hop to poetry to rap – the variety was as colourful as the theme.
Parents and guests all agree that this year’s show turned out to be one to remember.
Congratulations to all the participants and the staff who contributed to this great evening.
Daniel Kelly looks amazing in his court jester costume.
FRESHNESS: Schoolchildren of ReShomile Primary School in Diepsloot and Dainfern College Junior Prep pick spinach from the vegetable garden at the college and enjoyed a healthy lunch. After spending a lovely time in the vegetable garden, the little ones took spinach back to their school and families.
Unity College celebrated its 26th birthday at its annual Unity Market on 29 October.
Senior phase schoolchildren provided guests with plenty of food and drink to enjoy, including gourmet burgers and sweet treats.
Also on sale at the market were items of handmade jewellery, pot plants and even a showroom car wash.
All the stalls available on the day were planned and run by the senior phase, as the practical application of a being an entrepreneurship is taught as part of the
curriculum. There was plenty of entertainment for
family members as well, with visiting dads and sons being treated to a self-defence demonstration, while moms and daughters were taught the basics of classical belly dancing.
Toyota stepped up and hosted games for families, and parents and children alike got to dress up as their favourite fantasy characters at the Magic Photo Booth.
One of the best highlights of the day was when attendants were shown the college’s new pool.
A bonsai auction also took place before the birthday celebrations came to a close.
The cost of invalid National Senior Certifi cates is wasting billions of rand on fi rst-year dropouts that have received Bachelor passes.
This according to Jacques de Villiers, CEO of Growth Institute that said in 2013 the matric pass rate peaked at 78 per cent and a total of 171 755 qualifi ed for Bachelor studies at higher education institutions.
Last year, the number of students with Bachelor passes was 166 263. The minimum requirement to gain entry for a Bachelor’s degree is that a student must obtain 50 per cent in four designated subjects, 30 per cent in two others and proof of the school-based assessment in the remaining subject.
Statistics on Post-School Education and Training in South Africa: 2014, as published by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DoHET) in March this year, states that the total number of places that were fi lled by fi rst time-time students at one of the resident public universities was only recroded as
69 589 and 41 109 fi lled spaces at Unisa. De Villiers said that with the 171 755
students who are competing with those who did not get accepted in a previous year, the 114 848 available full-time and part-time places becomes inadequate.
He stated that if a situation like this is allowed to continue for fi ve years, at the start of the sixth year there will be 445 000 students competing for the 115 000 places available, which means that only 25 per cent of those who obtained a Bachelor’s pass will get into university.
Dr Andre van Zyl, an expert in the fi eld of fi rst-year successes stated, “Forty-one percent of students who enter university drop out, and up to 60 per cent of those who drop out, do so in their fi rst year. This means that 7 380 of the 30 000 Grade 12s who will make it to university next year will not survive the 2017 academic year. We can deduce from these statistics that the NSC certifi cate with a Bachelor pass does not prepare the recipient adequately for university.”
“The total wastage on fi rst-year dropouts is more than the entire 2016/17 NSFAS treasury allocation of R14.6 Billion,” De Villiers concluded.

The Gauteng Vaulting Championships ended on a high note after the championship recently took place at the Kyalami Equidome.
The beautiful sport of equestrian vaulting is a small equestrian discipline where athletes perform gymnastic routines on the back of a lunged, walking or cantering horse.
Michelle Blaauw from Gauteng Vaulting said, “The relationship between horse to lunger to vaulter is paramount and the performance is rather alluring whilst choreographed to theme and music. The sport is fi ghting hard to become a new Olympic discipline given its huge spectator appeal, although one of the last remaining hurdles is that not enough countries currently compete.”
Blaauw said that great inroads have been made in South Africa in bringing this sport to the disadvantaged with several vaulting programmes underway in Diepsloot and Soweto.
Mark White Nissan came on board this year and kindly pledged sponsorship for the Gauteng Vaulting Championships and subsequently followed up with
the sponsorship of the fi nal Gauteng 2016 show that was held recently at the stunning Kyalami Equidome.
“Without such support, the sport would not be able to thrive as it is currently, and we are proud to be hosting several competitors that have an opportunity to qualify for next year’s Junior World Championships in Austria,” said Blaauw.
“The standard of vaulting was high and evidenced by the number of athletes competing at the more advanced levels for juniors.
“Furthermore, two squads were down to compete, [it’s] a pity the IVLA Squad withdrew, leaving the highest award going to the well-executed performance of the Riba Junior Squad on Riba’s Rebel Hill,” said Blaauw.
The Canter Pairs class (known as Pas de Deux) was won by the very clean and creative routine of Erin Muller and Asea Pozniakow on Riba’s seasoned Riverdance.
“At the individual level, top awards were received across the male athletes from the IVLA Shumbashaba development vaulters, again such a privilege to see young and aspiring young men coming through the ranks from Diepsloot,” said Blaauw.
C-grade female winner, Jenna Blaauw on Riba Livewire.
Fourteen athletes from Fourways Martial Arts Academy were honoured at the Gauteng Karate Federation Awards dinner at Gold Reef City’s movie theatre.
The prestigious event was an opportunity to award the athletes, who were selected to represent the federation’s team at the national trials held in Johannesburg, as well as those who represented South Africa abroad.
When asked to describe the event and the athletes who were commended for all their hard work throughout last year and this year, academy instructor, sensei Stef Biagioni said, “Excellence, prestige, commitment. I am so happy that our students were honoured for all the hard work they put in this season,” he said, beaming. Biagioni added that his students did a great job at bringing back more than 25 trophies from the Karate South Africa Nationals. “Not only did my students achieve Gauteng colours and medal positions at the Karate South Africa Nationals earlier this year, but they also represented the country abroad at the various World Karate Federation events,” he said. These events were the Zone 6 Championships in Zimbabwe, World Karate Federation Training Camp and Youth Cup in Croatia.
“A special congratulations to two of our academy students, Justin Baynes and
Alessandro Biagioni,” added Biagioni. “Both Justin and Alessandro are also
ranked number one in kumite, kata and team kata for 2015/2016 in their divisions. This is an incredible achievement considering that Gauteng is the strongest province in the country and all the above accolades come from one dojo which is arguably the best dojo in the country, which according to me is Fourways Martial Arts Academy.”The students who were awarded were: Angela Tsita for best kata Zoë Duffi eld for best kata Claudia Dobson for best kata Nicholas Dobson for best kumite and best team kata Reece Baynes for best kumite and best team kata Justin Baynes for best kumite, kata, team kata and best overall cadet athlete 14 to 17 years Emma Wentzel for best presidents awards Cheyenne Barros for best kumite Aimee Grefen for best kata Khardan Ruocchio for best kata and team kata Alessandro Biagioni for best kumite, kata, team kata and best overall child athlete eight to 13 years Silvio Biagioni for best kata and team kata Stef Biagioni for best kata and team kata and Jacqui Baynes for the best manager of the year.
Four players of Dainfern Lions Football Club were selected for regional teams which participated in the South African Football Association Tournament.
Regional teams consisting of about 150 players from around the country participated in the three-day tournament.
Two of the club’s U10 star players who were selected for the regional team were striker, Keanin Louw and goalkeeper, Colby Sinclair. The other two players selected were
Rio Stilwell who played in the U11 division and Sikuyo Makhaye in the U15s.
Dainfern Lions Football club’s chairperson, Nic Papas said, “We as a team would like to thank the sponsors for their generous sponsorships which among other things allowed 40 disadvantaged children from Diepsloot to participate in the senior teams at the football club.
“Without these sponsorships the children would defi nitely be in the streets and seeing that this year’s season has ended, the registration for next year will open on 1 December,” Pappas concluded.
Dainfern Lions Football Club players, Colby Sinclair and Keanin Louw are part of the eight U10 teams from around the country who participated in the South African Football Association Tournament.

The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge celebrated it’s 20th year on 20 November and more than 30 000 cyclists took part in what is seen as Johannesburg’s biggest cycle challenge.
The cycle challenge kicked off at Century Property’s Riversands Commercial Park with enthusiastic cyclists taking to allocated routes, as they meandered through the streets of Johannesburg from Summit Road around the city on the M1, Jan Smuts Avenue and Witkoppen Road.
The route brought them back via Cedar Road, through Steyn City Boulevard and back up to
the fi nish line along Riversands Boulevard.
There was a heavy Metro police presence.
Necessary precautions were put in place to keep all the cyclists safe.
Certain roads were closed by Johannesburg Roads Agency and the City of Joburg, in a bid to ensure a safe and swift cycle challenge.
The top three fi nishers of the men’s leg of the cycle challenge were Brandon Davids, Eddie van Heerden and Morrie van Niekerk respectively.
In the women’s race, fi rst to cross the fi nish line was Charlotte Becker, Mavi Garcia came in second followed by Lisa Olivier in third place.
The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge’s 20th edition sees 30 000 cyclists take part at Riversands Commercial Park.
Over 5 000 men and women who were dressed in pink fl ooded the streets of Fourways in a fi rm protest against women and child abuse.
This was thanks to the 11th annual 1st for Women Sisters with Blisters walk with Jacaranda FM which took place at Montecasino on 26 November.
With a stern aim to raise awareness against the increase of abuse in the country, the campaign saw R350 000 being raised on the day for two organisations namely Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) and the Centre for Community Justice and Development (CCJD).
Casey Rousseau, spokesperson
for 1st for Women Insurance and the 1st for Women Foundation said, “It is an honour and a privilege to be involved in such a phenomenal movement – one that states that we, as South Africans, will not tolerate abuse in any shape or form.”
She added that, so far, 1st for Women Insurance and the 1st for Women Foundation have raised over R49 million to fi ght violence against women.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for stepping out, speaking out and making their voices heard.
“Woman and child abuse is everybody’s concern – it is an issue that, while not abating in occurrence, is increasing in awareness.”
Rousseau added that through
Sisters with Blisters they are making a positive and practical difference by inspiring victims of abuse to change their lives for the better.
Kevin Fine, general manager of Jacaranda FM stated that Jacaranda FM has taken a stand against women and child abuse for over a decade through the 1st for Women Sisters with Blisters event.
“Each year we make our voices heard in the hope that abused women have the courage to take a stand and change their circumstances positively; in some cases for themselves as well as their children,” Fine said.
“With thanks to our headline sponsors, 1st for Women, together we are able to galvanise support and effect a positive change within our communities.”
Sisters and misters stand fi rm against abuse at this year’s 1st for Women Sisters with Blisters walk with Jacaranda FM.
