Expensive vehicles targetedAIMEE [email protected]

THE Sandton Police are urging residents who drive expensive cars such as Porches to be vigilant.

Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson of the Sandton police said drivers of these

vehicles were being targeted by criminals based on the assumption the owners were carrying expensive items on them.

“Criminals are following drivers of expensive cars home and robbing them of their valuables in their driveways,” said Cloete.

Four Sandton police offi cers arrested for corruptionAIMEE [email protected]

FOUR offi cers from the Sandton Police Station were arrested in the early hours of 7 September for corruption.

In two separate incidents, members of the Germiston Organised Crime Unit, who were on an undercover operation to root out police corruption, were pulled over by the Sandton offi cers.

In both cases, the Sandton offi cers

accused the undercover crime unit drivers of drunken driving, and solicited bribes in return for not arresting them.

The drivers paid the bribes, and then arrested the Sandton offi cers.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police, the four offi cers appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 9 September.

“They appeared on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

“Two were remanded in custody, while the other two were released on bail,” said Cloete.

Cloete confi rmed that the undercover operation took place in areas of Sandton that have been identifi ed as potential police corruption hotspots.

“We want the public to know that we do not take corruption lightly,” said Cloete.

The investigation is on-going and is being conducted by the Organised Crime Unit directly.

Are the Rolex gang back in action again?AIMEE [email protected]

A MAN has been robbed of his watch and other jewellery by suspects wearing balaclavas.

The robbery took place on 7 September by suspects driving a white Audi Q range car.

“We have noted with concern the fact that the victims watch was stolen, and are investigating all possible angles of the case,” said spokesperson of the Sandton police, Captain Kym Cloete.

It has been reported that the robbery may have possible links to the Rolex gang, or a copycat group, but police could not confi rm that at this stage.

A second man was robbed of his Rolex watch in West Atholl on 9 September by suspects travelling in a white VW Polo.

“We suspect that the Rolex Gang is back,” said Warrant Offi cer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson of the Bramley police.

The man had just parked his Mercedes Benz when a suspect

pointed a gun at him and demanded that he hand over his watch.

“The victim dropped everything and he was forced to go back to his car,” added Maphakela.

The suspect stole a Rolex watch, money, a Mont Blanc fountain pen and a Lenovo laptop from the car.

The Rolex gang has been out of action for some time following the death of its leader, Kelvin Ludidi in a shootout with police, and the sentencing of kingpin, Mandla Dube to 45 years in jail in 2012.

Smash and grab attackADRIAAN [email protected]

KYLE Marias of Caxton Johannesburg North has had a bout of bad luck on William Nicol Drive.

Two months ago Marais’s cellphone was stolen by the smash-and-grab tactic where robbers threaten motorists at gunpoint for valuable items in cars, instead of smashing windows and taking whatever is in sight.

Last week Marais drove right into a similar situation, at the Main Road and William Nicol Drive intersection just after peak-hour traffi c.

Marais said this time the two robbers told him they were going to shoot him unless he handed over his wallet and cellphone.

“I said I didn’t have a cellphone on me, when they continued threatening me,” he said.

“Last time I thought the guy didn’t have a gun, and he did - so this time I didn’t take any chances.

“I explained that I didn’t have any valuables in the car.”

Luckily for Marais a witness behind him saw what happened, which helped him to get away.

Soap star Emmanuel Castis and his friend Kim Hatchel

were behind Marais. They indicated to him to pull

over after the failed robbery attempt.

Castis said, “It’s unfortunate that crime is part of our lives, and we need to be vigilant.”

According to Castis, Marais’s robbers came out of nowhere, and he was unsure of what to do while the robbery was in progress.

“But we cannot just sit and not do anything, we need to stick together to fi ght crime,” the actor said.

Castis also took to social media to warn the public on what he witnessed, asking fellow motorists to be cautious on the roads.

Captain Kym Cloete of Sandton Police Station said the attempted robbery was an isolated incident, and police have been successful in cracking down on smash-and-grab robberies.

“These crimes have calmed down and there weren’t many reports on it the previous two weeks.”

Motorists are reminded to be cautious during peak-hour traffi c when these crimes appear to be prevalent.

Cloete previously warned that victims were targeted because their windows were open.

"AFTER 2 YEARS OF DIVORCE,HE FINALLY CAME BACK TO ME"

I have been married for over 12 years, me and my family have been living a

good and precious life together and we have been blessed by two(2) beautiful

children. However things started changing and we started having endless arguments with my husband, I tried my best to save my family but unfortunately it was too late. He divorced me and took the kids with him to the joy of his friends and relatives that did not want anything to do with me from the start. In an effort to get my family back I visited priests,

gurus, healers for help but they all failed, I wasted a lot of money without results.

Luckily a caring old friend of mine introduced me to MAAMA LUKIA who had saved her son from DRUGS and

ALCOHOL, I paid 300 consultation fee, she perfectly foretold all my problems without me saying a word to her. She

even used a mirror to show me the real faces of people who were trying to make

me suffer.MAAMA LUKIA did special prayers for me, cleansed me from all the curses

and evil and also gave me powerful love crystals plus a special traditional ring to fix my financial woes. Ten(10) days later after prayers my ex husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I forgave him and now we are happy and we got

TREE defender, Nicci Robertson is not impressed by the renovations taking place at Bryanpark Shopping Centre in Bryanston.

The centre is currently undergoing a facelift. Management is also expanding some of the shops at the centre and re-paving the parking lot area for their shoppers. But Robertson was less than impressed when she arrived at the centre and witnessed one of the trees being cut down.

“Management decided to cut down the trees in the parking lot to make way

for more parking bays,” said Robertson. “I’m a proud defender of trees that make this town bearable.

“This is why when I see trees being hacked down for no good reason it makes me livid.”

Operations manager at the Bryanpark Shopping Centre, Nicolas Christodoulou said they had only re-paved the parking lot area and not expanded. “We removed two dead trees that were lifting the paving because the roots were growing out,” explained Christodoulou. “We’re fi xing this place up for the community. I don’t see what the problem is.”

Christodoulou added that the centre would plant more trees in the future.

STRATHAVON resident, Barbra Buys is concerned that the Sandspruit River is losing its natural beauty.

Buys lives nearby the river that runs through Innesfree Park in Strathavon.

She is worried that the City of Johannesburg is no longer looking after the river area like it used to.

“The main reason I moved here was because of the river and the nature that comes with it, but that is slowly withering away now,” said Buys. She complained about building contractors who dumped rubble in the river, and suspected that the buildings under construction in the vicinity of the river were not within the legal building parameters. “Some of these buildings are way too close to the river,” explained Buys. “A building inspector needs to come and evaluate some of these constructions. This can have a very

dangerous outcome. It is not safe to be so close to the river as it can get quite fl ooded if the rainwater does not have a clear pathway, especially with all this building rubble in the way,” she said.

Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water said his department was unaware of the conditions at the river. “We will send a team out to see if Johannesburg Water has a role to play,” he said.

Ward 91 councillor, Andrew Stewart assessed the area and agreed with Buys that a building inspector would need to evaluate whether the buildings were within the legal building parameters. “In all likelihood, the wall will need to be demolished,” said Stewart. “A small wall has been built in an attempt to protect the property and the river bank from further erosion. However, a wall like this would have to be built with the assistance of a qualifi ed engineer and they would need to apply for the necessary way leave.”

Closure objectionsGUGU [email protected]

THE Bryanston Riverclub North Security Association’s request for temporary closures at various points in the Bryanston area has been approved by the Johannesburg Roads Agency.

A resident, Estelle Hoffman is less than pleased by this authorisation.

After seeing the notice of approval in the Sandton Chronicle last week, she is most concerned by the closure of Bellgrave Street/ Brooke Road and Borrowdale Road/ Coleraine Drive.

“I do not believe the majority of the residents in the area are aware of this application, or its implications,” said Hoffman. “I use Belgrave Road several times a day and I certainly was not aware of this application until recently.”

Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp said the application was not new. “They’ve always had closures,” he said. “It’s just that those closures are renewed every two years.” Earp added that the roads agency received the approval of the closures from the residents that lived in the area. “Residents must have been surely warned, because they got an

80 percent approval,” he said. Earp said residents were free to dispute the decision, but they had until 29 September to do so. Anyone who has any comments on the draft terms of the proposed restriction must lodge such comments in writing with the Traffi c Engineering Department.

Hoffman and fellow resident Matt Shelley have agreed to co-ordinate the lodging of objections, which have to be posted or delivered by hand to Sauer Street in Johannesburg. Residents who wish to object can drop their letters of objection at Giovanni Batista Haircare at the Riverside Shopping Centre, or signed letters may be scanned and emailed to [email protected]. Any other queries can also be sent to the email address. The letters of objection will then be delivered to the roads agency’s offi ces in Johannesburg.

Hoffman said, “I understand the need of the Bryanston Riverclub North Security Association to improve the security of the Riverclub area, but this cannot be done at the expense of a large amount of residents who use the Belgrave Road at all times, every day. The security of a small group of residents cannot be achieved at the expense of the vast majority.”

Dunkeld proposal a thorn in the fl esh for residentsGRAEME [email protected]

THE proposed Management District 1D of the Rosebank Urban Development Framework has become a thorn in the fl esh of many Dunkeld residents.

The department of town planning’s plans for the area bounded by Cradock Avenue and Oxford, Bompas and Rosebank roads would include road upgrades, high density housing and selective retail developments (Big change coming, Gazette week ending 30 August).

Ward councillor Gordon Mackay said the issue fi rst reared its head six years ago, when the Rosebank node was fi rst defi ned and stipulations were created for amended land-use rights.

“The expansion of Rosebank over Jellicoe Avenue has been of concern to Dunkeld residents for some time because of the changing spatial layout, the effect on property values and the high volume of traffi c brought to the area,” said Mackay.

In 2007, the Dunkeld Village Association engaged a town planner to draw up a proposed precinct plan, but the department “put it on ice” for a while, as the plan might not tie in with its plans for Rosebank.

Mackay said the association had been told by several estate agents the proposed plans would have a negative effect on property values.

“Issues came to a head when the association submitted an amended precinct plan.

Based on the 2007 plan, it took into account the changes in the area, as well as residents’ concerns.

It called for densifi cation and

commercial land-use on the fringes of the suburb,” said Mackay.

Things became more complicated when developers with their sights on the area submitted a proposed precinct plan “with scant regard for residents” to the city council.

Mackay met with then-MMC for Development Planning, Ruby Mathang, who agreed the city council would have to fi nd a way to integrate the various plans with stronger input from residents.

When the plans proposed by residents and developers were turned down by the council, Mathang suggested the city council develop a new plan.

He said MMC for Development Planning, Ros Greeff, allocated R1 million for a consultant to draw up a new plan that included feedback from public participation meetings held over a six-week period in May 2012.

The residents association had walked out of the last of those meetings, as they felt their concerns weren’t being addressed.

“Key pieces of information including market evaluations and a traffi c impact study weren’t delivered.

“We were left in a situation where residents and the department weren’t talking,” said Mackay.

The department has since published the plan and called for public comment in a short period of time.

Mackay met with Greeff, who he said agreed that offi cials would present the plan to residents at the association’s annual general meeting on 30 September, and that residents would have the opportunity to comment until 4 October.

Metro police offi cers accused of corruptionGUGU [email protected]

RIVONIA Road, William Nicol Drive and Grayston Drive have been identifi ed as bribing hotspots involving motorists and the Metro police.

An alleged victim of bribery and corruption who requested anonymity, has accused the Metro police of harassment and soliciting a bribe. He said about four or fi ve police offi cers allegedly stopped him and requested to see his driver’s licence.

On his way to join the M1 South, from Grayston Drive, on 1 September, one of the police offi cers checked his driver’s licence and told him it was invalid.

He is an Indian national that has been working in South Africa for three years.

“I had to tell them that my foreign licence was valid in South Africa and that I had all the necessary documents to prove it.”

He was allegedly separated from his wife and she was forced to travel with one of the other offi cers while he was transported in the police car.

MIND THE STREET LIGHT: A woman and her child pass by a trench in which a street light is leaning over dangerously on Helen Road, Strathavon in Sandton. Ward 91councillor, Andrew Stewart said the street light is now at a 45 degree angle and he is concerned that it will cause an accident. Stewart has been trying to get Johannesburg Water to rectify the problem after trenches were dug to repair old pipes. “I have still not seen any action on the matter,” he said.

“They said they were taking me to the Magistrate’s Court in Alexandra and that I will have to pay R5 000,” he said.

“It was clear that he wanted big money from me and I was his big fi sh for the day.”

The alleged victim ended up having to empty his wallet before he was released.

“The Johannesburg Metro Police Department will never tolerate corruption,” said Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson of the Metro police.

Minnaar’s colleague, Edna Mamonyane said complainants of police corruption

were advised to contact the Metro police internal affairs department on 011-490-1703 or the corruption line on 0800-203-712.

Mamonyane said after a complaint had been laid with the internal affairs department, a case would be opened and an investigation would take place.

“If the complainant is still dissatisfi ed with the investigation conducted by the internal affairs department, then an offi cial criminal case may be opened with police,” said Mamonyane.

KABELO [email protected]

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Service Matshidiso Mfi koe has condemned recent actions of ‘sabotage’ by striking City Power employees.

This after striking employees allegedly and deliberately caused a power outage in some parts of Johannesburg, in defi ance of the employers’ introduction of new working shifts.

“We need to praise courageous initiatives from public institutions and encourage a high-performance culture in the public sector. It is unacceptable for senior executives to be persecuted for driving a high-performance agenda. Those found guilty of these criminal activities will face the full might of the South African law,” said Mfi koe.

She said the city supported the

implementation of effi ciencies within City Power, to meet service delivery objectives, contribute towards the municipality’s Growth and Development Strategy objectives, adding, “we will support any initiatives that will uproot corruption and ineffi ciencies”.

City Power board chairperson, Reverend Frank Chikane said the shift model implementation was necessary to address employee safety and to comply with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, including ensuring effi cient service delivery.

“We will ensure that the MD and his management team receive the necessary support. While we respect our employee’s right to withhold their labour following the lawful processes, interfering or sabotaging the network is a criminal act that will not be tolerated,” he added.

New Rea Vaya bus route to open soonKABELO [email protected]

THE Rea Vaya route to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park will open on 14 October.

Students, workers and residents will now be able to travel from Soweto to Melville, Auckland Park, Parktown and the Joburg CBD, through Noordegesig, New Canada, Pennyville, Bosmont,

Coronationville, Newclare, Westbury and Westdene.

City spokesperson Virgil James said the new services would use 134 new buses.

“The introduction of the Rea Vaya smart card is another innovation that commuters can use to pay for travel easily and safely,” he said.

James said the implementation of the Rea Vaya would continue with the Phase 1C plan that included the construction of three larger

scale multi-modal interchanges in Sandton, Westgate and Pan Africa in Alexandra.

This will enable passengers to utilise Gautrain, Metro rail, Metrobus, mini bus and metered taxi modes. As the construction of dedicated bus routes continued, James said there would be a signifi cant upgrading of roads and pathways for cycling and walking, especially in Alexandra, Wynberg, Marlboro and the Sandton CBD.

Sanral disappointed about downgradeKABELO [email protected]

THE South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has expressed disappointment at Moody’s Investor Services’ decision to downgrade its credit rating.

“Though it was not unexpected, it still does pain us. When rating agencies perceive any indecisiveness in commitment to the implementation of government policy, this is the result you get,” Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona said.

Mona said the consequence of the downgrade was that borrowing for the national road agency would likely increase.

“Let’s not forget that Sanral is a state-owned entity. In essence, it is an asset owned by the people of South Africa and government is simply the custodian. Therefore, the downgrade of Sanral ultimately has implications for the people of South Africa.”

Mona added the downgrade would affect Sanral’s risk profi le.

“We do raise money from commercial markets in order to

supplement our allocation from the national fi scus to enable us to deliver good quality national roads. The national road that gave rise to this downgrade is one of the best in our toll portfolio and was fi nanced through debt which must be repaid,” he said.

He concluded that the downgrade will not hamper Sanral’s continued operations, especially its non-toll portfolio, which constitutes 84 percent of its road network and is fi nanced through an allocation from the fi scus and therefore is not affected by tolling.

Foundation announces Free Market awardTAMARA ARDEN [email protected]

DR Pauline Dixon, senior lecturer and director of research for International Development and Education at Newcastle University, England, received the third Free Market Foundation Luminary Award on 11 September. The foundation is based in Sandton.

Dixon received the award from economic leader Herman Mashaba for her lifelong dedication to all the people of South Africa and for demonstrating the highest level of integrity. Mashaba, Free Market Award winner for contribution to economic freedom in 2004, introduced Dixon’s presentation on private schooling to overcome poverty.

Mashaba said Dixon was invited to South Africa to promote schooling choices for children in underprivileged areas.

“The priority for children is education.

I want to promote a system I admire,” said Mashaba.

Dixon began her presentation with a video showcasing the research she had undertaken in impoverished areas like India, China and Africa.

“In a slum area, I only see the good.

“I look at the vibrancy and colour of the situation.

“People are not waiting for the government, they are doing it themselves,” said Dixon.

She explained that many shanty towns, slums and rural communities have a selection of low-cost private schooling for the children living in the area.

The majority of these schools are unregistered and unrecognised by the government, but continue to educate to improve the next generation to provide high quality of education.

Dixon also found that privately-taught children were ahead of government institutions as their schooling was more active.

School fees are six to 10 percent of parents’ minimal wage and private teachers earn a quarter of wages to government educators.

However parents are more involved with the curriculum and some teachers who are not certifi ed make up in time and activity. Dixon relies on international aid, thorough research and asking poor areas what they want.

Her book Smiles, miracles and markets can be purchased online and talks about ways to reach out to children.

Luminary.. Herman Mashaba hands Dr Pauline Dixon her unique

award.

Vavi faces drawn daggerDISGRACED Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi was seemingly right about daggers being drawn against him before his sex scandal erupted a month ago.

That much is obvious by the infi ghting for the control of the soul of the labour union federation since Vavi admitted to taking it all off for a junior colleague.

The mudslinging, politicking and the reinstate Vavi campaign, with the National Union of Metal Workers of SA (Numsa) in the forefront, cannot be good for the ANC-led tripartite alliance.

It is not possible that all of a sudden and ignited by a man who owned up to his sins and asked for forgiveness, critics at Numsa and elsewhere have lost confi dence in Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini.

On Tuesday, a court bid

by Numsa to declare Vavi’s suspension unconstitutional and unprecedented was postponed to allow parties to fi le affi davits. There are other Cosatu affi liates wanting to oppose the application.

SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande has come out with guns blazing against leaders who think they are going to take certain affi liates out of Cosatu.

He said they were part of the enemy that wanted to destroy the revolution, and “there can be no problem that is bigger than the unity of Cosatu”.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe also warned: “You have made an assumption that if you decide to leave the ANC, the ANC will become static.

“...you will have an ANC that will grow more and more

conservative and once it is more conservative it will be brutal on the working class.”

The SA Municipal Workers Union joined the fray, describing Vavi’s suspension as a witch-hunt.

Indications are that Cosatu has been slowly bleeding for a while, and Vavi’s infi delity was merely the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The ANC needs a strong and united alliance, as Cosatu brings millions of voters to the ruling party.

Whether Vavi is reinstated or not, at the end of this kindergarten party, Cosatu family matter should never have to be decided by the courts and judge who knows nothing about political games.

Vavi failed to keep his pants zipped, and when he got into the act, a man of his wisdom should have known he had addressed his last workers’ rally.

Barking mad writes:

DOGS barking for hours on end and running loose in the street - that is the pleasure we have of living in President Way in Kelvin.

Our neighbour two houses down, left his gate ajar on 11 September and my mother who walks in the mornings had his two boxer dogs going for her.

Luckily she was unhurt. Most mornings when I leave for

work, there is at least one dog running in President Way or in Sunny Way.

Last year in June, my cat was mauled right outside our perimeter palisade and died at the vet.

The neighbours who own the killer dogs just said they were sorry. Did that bring back my cat that was like my child? Furthermore, they refused to pay the vet's bill.

The reason for the majority of people in President Way having dogs escapes me.

Do they go and choose a dog, chuck it in their yards, put a bowl of water and some food down, rub their hands together and say, "Right, now I have a guard dog." Then forget that they do.

These guard dog owners don't even hear their dogs barking. If a guard dog is barking - day or night - get up and go and see why. If it is barking inanely at fairies

and ghosts, tell it to be quiet. Why should the rest of us have

OUR peace and quiet and sleep disturbed because of bored dogs barking for hours? It is illegal for dogs to be out on the road unless they are on a leash and accompanied by the owner or walker.

And stop all the barking. If you don't love animals

and can't be responsible about owning one, then don't get one.

And it is not the dogs faults - it is their owners to blame.

Please dog owners in President Way, take control of your dogs and be more responsible.

Illegal dumping is endemicR M Meldrum writes:

IN response to, Residents have their fi ll of illegal dumping, week ending 13 September:

Illegal dumping is endemic in all areas, but Kelvin and its immediate environs are being heavily affected.

I have to disagree with councillor Kekena that the culprits are local residents.

It is plain to see by the size of the heaps and mass of the items, that the materials dumped in the Kelvin area are from 10-ton type tipper trucks used on major construction sites.

These sites are in operation in a radius of perhaps only some 10 or 12km away.

The penny-pinching developers are blatantly fouling the environment with impunity, as the fi nes are minor and few are ever caught anyway, and they save a considerable amount of money.

It is costing the taxpayer many thousands of rand, to just clear one road or area.

If measures were put in place by the responsible departments of the city council to block access

to the open areas and police the activities of developers, this activity could be curtailed and public money saved.

Trucks actually caught, should be impounded and owners charged.

In addition to fi nes, a six fi gure sum in release fees should be added so that city council can recover some of the wasted expenditure being incurred.

Action has been taken by the Business Community of Eastgate/ Kelvin View.

On the 28 August a petition to the mayor and city council to stop illegal dumping was submitted.

This is now scheduled for consideration by the Petitions Committee of the city council. Meetings have also been held with Region E representatives.

If members of the public witness illegal dumping taking place, the Metro police’s 24-hour control room should be called, and details of the location, truck, ownership licence plates and a photograph should be taken for evidence.

The Metro police’s 24-hour control room number is 011-758-9622.

Had enough of City PowerAnother customer fed up with City Power writes:

ON 24 June, I visited the Sandton offi ce of City Power and asked to have my electricity meter moved to the outside wall from the inside of my kitchen. The meter is too high for me to read it.

I paid R4 560 immediately. To date, after many calls still

nothing has been done.I am a 72-year-old pensioner and

don’t drive, so getting anywhere is diffi cult.

Now the worst is that one struggles to get hold of City Power on the phone.

When you do get through, nobody is ever available for your area.

I am continuously told “you have to come in as this is a call centre”.

All I want to know is what is happening to my application.

City Power, I want my money back with interest.

Keep neighbourhood’s barking dogs quiet

A bunch of vrot onions to call centreMargaret Graff writes:

ON 3 September at 3am robbers entered the property of my daughter on Krom Road in Bryanston.

Luckily her domestic worker woke up and managed to alert the family using her cellphone after locking herself in her bathroom. My grandson promptly dialled 10111 and after asking for help, the person taking the call cut him off. Great help when you most need it.

The family then phoned the cell

numbers supplied by the Randburg police which supposedly are the numbers of the Sector 5 patrol van and the resident policeman in charge of Sector 5 community policing.

Not one of the cellphones was answered. They then in desperation phoned the Randburg charge offi ce, who reacted swiftly and sent out help. They arrived about seven minutes after the call.

Apparently, their house was one of several in the area that had been burgled that night.

First of all a bouquet of roses to

the charge offi ce in Randburg for their prompt assistance. It is very frightening to have intruders in your house and worse if their is no help from an emergency number.

So, to the holders of the cellphones and the 10111 emergency service - I emphasise ‘service’ as the police are their to serve us, not to put the phone down in an emergency - a large bunch of vrot, stinking onions. That is what you deserve.

I hope your commissioner investigates this lack of service to the community.

Marc Harel writes:

IN RESPONSE to, Red Alert for Smash and Grabs, week ending 24 August 2013.

I am an owner of a small window tinting business in Fourways and would like to respond to your article.

There has been a huge increase in smash and grab attacks since the beginning of June this year.

There are a number of reasons for this and very specifi c areas that the criminals are using based on certain surroundings.

The biggest misconception is that fi tting an anti-smash and grab safety fi lm to your vehicle is expensive and a luxury which is not the case.

However, due to the large demand for smash and grab tinting almost all motor dealerships have increased their prices by 100 percent to 300 percent as it is an easy sell.

Smash and grab tinting can cost anywhere between R2

850 excluding vat to R6 500 depending on the dealer and the make and model of vehicle.

If you have smash and grab safety fi tted by a proper fi tment centre, the cost ranges between R950 to R1 750 per vehicle, which is very affordable.

Most importantly there are also different levels or grades of safety fi lm which the consumer is never told about.

This is because for the price a dealer would charge for an entry level 100 micron smash and grab fi lm, you could fi t the highest grade German manufactured bullet resistant 375 micron fi lm.

Fitting a safety fi lm to your vehicle will also help and prevent many other issues the consumer is not aware of.

Many people are also under the impression that by fi tting a smash and grab fi lm to their vehicle, their windows cannot be broken which is not the case, and consumers need to be aware of this too.

Reaching new heights for animalsTAMARA [email protected]

ALL 25 Sandton SPCA Kilimanjaro expedition members reached the mountain’s summit on 7 September.

The mountaineers aim was to raise money and awareness for the Sandton SPCA as the organisation does not receive government funding.

The team had exceeded their fundraising goal of R500 000 by the time they set off for the climb. They were led by Sean Disney of Adventure Dynamics, who is well-known in mountaineering circles for having conquered the Seven Summits.

“Climbing for a cause has become more popular over the last few years and I am sure the animals of the SPCA appreciate this,” said Disney. “Adventure Dynamics is proud to be associated with the Sandton SPCA.

“The team members were fi t and strong and had been preparing for nine months under the watchful eye of Sandton SPCA Chairperson,

Brenton Booth. Their efforts paid off.”

Tanzanite, the Sandton SPCA’s adorable mutt, accompanied the group to the summit. He represented the importance of animals in people’s lives and the obligation of society to reach out and protect animals.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro for the Sandton and Metro SPCA was a challenging and rewarding experience and was in many respects, life changing,” said expedition member, Mike Brandon.

“The actual climb with a group of like-minded people for this worthy cause was truly humbling.”

Sandton SPCA is a self-sustained, non-profi t organisation responsible for its own fundraising. A substantial portion of the money it raises goes towards its on-going efforts in Alexandra for animal sterilisation, healthcare and education.

The Sandton SPCA also house, feed and provide medical care for an average of 350 vulnerable animals every month.

Tour SA on a motorbikeGUGU ZWANE [email protected]

HENRY Cole, the presenter of the World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides, has brought his show to South Africa.

The Harley Davidson Shop in Morningside was the ideal place to offi cially launch the show’s fi rst South African series. The media was invited to premiere parts of the series at the shop on 10 September. The show will document Cole’s eccentric tour of

South Africa from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

“I wanted to experience the real South Africa on a motorbike,” said Cole.

“I stayed away from the tourist routes to experience South Africa in a different way.”

The series was shot in a month and it will be aired in fi ve episodes on DStv’s Travel Channel, from 30 September. “It is all about freedom,” he added.

“This was really a dream come true for me. I met some amazing

people while I was on the road.” Cole said he enjoyed some

spectacular local hospitality, including his ride with a chapter of female riders in Soweto.

He said he was especially amazed by the beauty of the Kalahari desert at sunrise. “That was where I really got to gather my thoughts and took it all in,” he added.

The entire show will be broadcast in more than 130 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacifi c.

United in leather… The Harley Davidson bikers in Morningside give Henry Cole a warm welcome. All smiles… Lyn Leader, Richard Pelczarski and Henry Cole smile for the camera.

Storyteller… Henry Cole tells the crowd about his journey.

Scuba diver shares his passionGUGU [email protected]

DIVE enthusiast Gordon Patterson believes that scuba diving saved his life.

Patterson had many successful years in the advertising and marketing industry, but he longed for a sense of purpose - and he found it when he started scuba diving in 1998.

“I was lost in business,” he said. “I was on an escalator that was going one way. I realised that advertising is the fi rst part of my life. It’s not my entire life.”

Patterson was fi rst introduced to scuba diving by his sky diving instructor. He then combined his fi rst love for wildlife with his new found love for scuba diving and embarked on underwater photography.

“Under the water everything is perfect - everything is in harmony,” he explained. “Photography has allowed me to share my experiences with others.”

More than anything, 52-year-old Patterson wants to share his life-changing experience with everyone. As a master instructor with PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), Patterson wants other people to experience the joy he gets from diving.

“It is the most amazing feeling

Fanatic… Gordon Patterson wanted everyone to join him underwater at the Dive Rally at Miracle Waters on 14 September.

Library receives upgrade

Books to sell... Keith Elliot of Friends of the Library is surrounded by crates of books for sale.

THE Sandton library has been refurbished with the help of the city council.

The library received R1 million for the project.

Keith Elliot, chairperson of Friends Of The Library said the structure of the building was strengthened.

The spiral staircase tiles had been replaced and the pine fl oors were re-polished.

Plumbing was seen to in the bathrooms and the roof was cleared of leaks and dirt.

“The library is fortunate to have daylight to lighten the space up.

“I am very happy with everything here, even with the power cuts,” said Elliot.

Thembelihle Radebe of Group Issues Management for City of Joburg said, “The City has a maintenance plan linked to all its facilities for repairs and maintenance when the need arises.”

Elliot added that The Friends of Sandton Library were looking for donations of books.

to see someone dive for the fi rst time,” he said. “They come out a totally different person. I truly get a kick from teaching people how to dive.”

Patterson joined the rest of PADI at the Dive Rally at Miracle Waters, Brits, on 14 September. The day promised to be fi lled with fun activities for everyone, live entertainment and exhibitors. The main aim of the rally was to gather the entire diving industry and to create hype around scuba diving.

HOW SHERRY CHANGEDMY LIFE!

Between 1997-2001, I went from being a successful business man for 20 years to nearly

being destitute and homeless. I lost 4 houses and 2 business property’s were repossessed by the

bank. My marriage also fell apart. I turned to my area newspaper where I found Sherry and I called her. She understood that I was totally broke and accepted to read and fix my long list of problems

which included bad luck and many more. She worked wonders with a special magic ring and a

lucky stick that changed my entire world and helped me reunite with my wife. I recommended Sherry to over 50 of my family members and all

their testimonies are up-lifting.

Duster in a C-segment dust-upThe arrival of the new Renault Clio barely

six months ago helped breathe some healthy sales into the French brand. How-

ever, Renault hasn’t stopped there and has now launched its top-selling vehicle globally in South Africa.

The Renault Duster is a hugely spacious SUV and we know the locals love their big cars, but what this brand has done right was keenly price the Duster in line with many C-segment sedans in the hope of trying to steal sales from the likes of the Ford Focus and even the Chevrolet Cruze.

We saw Renault’s strong price positioning with the Clio 4. Starting at under R160 000, it left many of its competitors scratching their heads. Now, Renault will surely do it again as it introduces the entry-level Duster for R194 900.

It’s certainly a competitive price for a competent vehicle. We got to drive it not only on some fantastic long, sweeping tar roads, but also got dusty as we

headed down some less-than-savoury dirt roads in the 4x4 derivative.

Admittedly, this car isn’t going to be a hardcore adventurer’s dream vehicle, but it is more capable than most SUVs off-road.

From a styling perspective, it has got a sense of ruggedness about it thanks to its wide wheel arches and aggressive ground clearance. Of course being rugged doesn’t always mean you are blessed with the most adoring face and front-on the Duster does look slightly outdated and old, particularly when you look at how beautifully sculpted the rest of the Renault line-up is (bar the Fluence).

As you move to the rear of the 4 320mm long vehicle, looks improve dramatically as the ag-gressiveness is embodied in the tail lights and bumper.

Moving inside the Duster, Renault has once again comprehensively specced it. Available in two guises, the base-level Expression has a CD/MP3 player with Aux and USB ports, along with Bluetooth connectivity and rear parking sensors among the other creature comforts you

STUART MOIR would usually expect. In the upper-grade Dynamique, you get a naviga-

tion system operated via an 18cm touch screen. On the outside, the Dynamique boasts a chrome

touch to the door handles, roof bars, side sills and skid plates. Both models run on 16-inch alloy wheels.

The interior space is noticeable with a 475-litre boot, into which you can load just about anything. Made of hard plastics, the dashboard is built to last and seems basic.

The engines, on the other hand, aren’t. Two powertrains are available in the Duster: a 1.6-litre 16-valve petrol engine that produces 75kW and 145Nm of torque, which translates to a claimed fuel consumption of 7.5 litres/100km.

The 1.5 dCi turbo-diesel is the newcomer to the Renault stable and has 80kW of power and a handy 240Nm of torque.

Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, Renault claims 5.5 litres/100km in the 4x2 and an emis-sions rating of 143g/km, while the 4x4 will sip 5.3 litres/100km and just 137g/km of Co2.

The upper-trim Dynamique is offered with both

engines, the latter being available in both 4x2 and 4x4 guises. The Expression model is only available with the 1.6-litre petrol.

Consistent with safety, the Duster houses ABS with EBD and emergency brake assist along with front and passenger airbags.

Despite the Duster’s long features list and loads of space, Renault could have a battle on its hands with the recent launch of the better-looking Ford EcoSport, which retails only for a few bucks more. Luckily this macho man knows how to get tough.

As is the case across Renault’s entire product range, the new Renault Duster comes stand-ard with a 5-year/150 000km warranty. All Duster variants will also come standard with a 3-year/45 000km service plan.

New Sentra is big enough for a baby•ad

GERHARD HORN

I RECENTLY found out that in eight short months I’m going to be a father. Words cannot describe the elation I felt when I got the news, but unfortunately this elation soon turned into annoyance.

You see, about an hour after fi nding out, I pur-chased a book called What to expect when you’re expecting and it turns out I’m not of much use during the baby growing phase. The book says I have to offer love and support, but as that’s part and parcel of being a husband in the fi rst place, not much seems to have to change on my side.

Not wanting to waste too much time on self-pity, I set myself the task of fi nding the perfect family car for the three of us. I thought it wouldn’t be that hard, as a baby hardly needs any space at all. The largest baby ever recorded weighed a mere 10.8kg and you really don’t need an MPV to carry that.

I changed my mind as soon as we went window-shopping for a few baby items. Do you have any idea how much junk you have to carry around when you become a parent? Those of you who are parents are probably grinning at that question, but for those of you who aren’t, allow me to explain.

When you travel with a baby you have to pack a stroller, pram, diapers, blankets, portable crib, bibs, wipes, baby food, sun hat and naturally a baby seat. I’m surprised most parents don’t own articulated trucks.

This brings me neatly to the new Sentra. I’ve wondered for the longest time why anyone would need such a big car, but now I know why. To parents, size matters and the Sentra has loads of it.

With its acres of interior space, it’s easy to see why. Its generous proportions hide an interior that has more than enough space for a baby. Or two. The 510-litre boot can easily swallow all of the above junk while still having enough space left over so

that you, the parents, can bring something along for the journey as well.

The second thing parents look for in a car is safety and in this department the Sentra fares equally well. This family oriented Nissan has a Safety Shield, which is basically a collection of safety related features including ABS, EBD, BAS, six airbags and Isofi x child-seat achors. All of the above makes me think that whoever designed the Sentra was a family man himself and he did a pretty good job.

What about the rest of the car? Well, it’s not the fastest thing on four wheels, but its 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol does a perfectly adequate job of moving the Sentra around. It delivers 85kW and 154Nm and can be mated to a fi ve-speed manual or an effi cient CVT automatic transmission. As is said, it’s not the most powerful engine out there, but it is silky smooth and light on the juice. For the record, Nissan claims a combined fuel consumption of 6.6 litres/100km.

Then we get to what I consider to be the best attribute of the new Sentra: the ride quality. The Sentra aims to be comforting at all times, which works perfectly with the low NVH levels. Couple that with a set of deeply relaxing seats at the front and a comfy bench at the back and you have yourself the perfect long-distance cruiser.

Specifi cation levels are generous as well, with central locking, adjustable steering wheel, trip computer, Bluetooth connectivity, folding rear seats, air conditioning, electric windows all-round and a radio/CD player with MP3/USB/iPod and Aux integration included as standard. The only feature I actually missed was cruise control, which really should be standard on any car costing more than R180 000.

For R230 900 (R253 600 for the CVT option), you get a lot of metal. It may not be the most interesting car in the C-segment, but it has space in abundance and a relaxing ride. Include the generous specifi ca-

tion and impressive safety features and you have a car that makes a lot of sense to the average family man. Plus, it’s a Sentra, and that name means a lot to loyal Nissan buyers in South Africa.

The all-new Sentra range is available as stand-ard with a 3-year/90 000km service plan and a 3-year/100 000km warranty. Service intervals a re set at 15 000km.

BMW recently launched the i8, the second car in its new i line-up. We’ve been waiting for the produc-tion model of this car for ages and now it’s fi nally made its debut in Frankfurt.

We’ve always been under the impression that the production model will have massive issues with regards to styling. The concept was way out there, so much so that it featured as an advanced spy car in a Mission Impossible movie. It simply wasn’t possible for a production model to be as stunning as the concept it was based on. As a general rule, production models are watered-down versions of the beautiful machinery fi rst displayed in concept format.

Not so with the i8. Sure, it doesn’t look as far out as the concept, but it’s still a beautiful design piece. It features all the BMW cues we know and

BMW i8 a s nging green stunner

love in a modern interpretation of a wedge-shaped supercar. And let’s not forget those Lamborghini Diablo-like doors. We’re glad the accountants signed off on those.

The i8 is a 2+2 seater with a passenger cell made from carbon-fi bre reinforced plastic. The result is a kerb weight of 1 490kg and a very low centre of gravity. The engineers also spent a lot of time making the i8 as slippery as possible, resulting in an extremely aerodynamic vehicle.

This is very good news for hypermilers. The i8 has a plug-in hybrid system, which is the latest development stage of BMW’s famed Effi cient-Dynamics programme. An impressive combined consumption fi gure of 2.5 litres/100km is claimed with emissions fi gures well below the norm of a sports car.

But then it wouldn’t be a proper BMW if it didn’t perform like one. At the core of the powertrain is a 1.5-litre petrol engine with TwinPower turbo technology. It has an output of 170kW and 320Nm of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. It doesn’t sound like enough for a BMW sports car, but then it also has an electric motor with outputs of 96kW and 250Nm of torque. This power is sent to the front wheels via a two-stage automatic ’box.

The combined power output is 266kW and 570Nm of torque. Combine that with the slim bodywork and aerodynamics and you have a car that will accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. Not bad for a hybrid.

The driver can choose between different driving modes. A comfort mode offers optimum balance

between dynamics and effi ciency, while a sport mode gives the driver an ultra-intense boost func-tion provided by the electric motor. The car can also be switched between all-electric - with a range of 35km - to hybrid mode with a range of 500km.

On the inside there’s an extensive range of stan-dard equipment, which includes navigation with a proactive drive system for all-electric driving, fully digital instrument display, BMW iDrive with free-standing control display and leather sports seats. The list further includes park distance control, cruise control with braking function, rain sensor and Intelligent Emergency Call. The i8 also comes standard with a BMW iWallbox for convenient battery charging at home.

The i8 is expected to reach South Africa late in 2014. - Motoring Staff •ad

IMPACT BIGGER THAN WE THINK

Dear Editor,

This past week, another 22 souls departed South Africa violently and probably scores more maimed beyond further social functionality, again at the hands of a heavy vehicle.

We have become so complacent on the matter that I doubt whether many of us will recall this devastation within the next two weeks. Let us do some maths (this is done with the utmost respect for those whom have perished).

It was 7pm when this accident happened, so we can be quite certain that most of the victims were on their way home from work. Now given our current socio-economic challenges, we can safely assume that these people were sole breadwin-ners heading to families of between four and eight dependants.

In some cases, the head of the family will now be a child. Education will be sacrifi ced and should this child be fortunate enough to fi nd work, they will do this walking on a path paved with shat-tered dreams.

It can also be said that, if dependants cannot fi nd a way of supporting their families in the normal manner, the chances of them taking a darker path are strong. The loss of 30 economi-cally active people will negatively impact directly on 180 people and further negative impact from there onwards could be infi nite.

Why? It is because of our attitude toward ourselves and others. Few South African truck drivers brag about their jobs to friends at parties because they will be conscious of brothers, sisters or cousins that are doctors and lawyers. Let me tell you right now that yours is not a job, it is a profession. A surgeon only takes responsibility for one life in an operating room and you take responsibility for dozens of lives every time you start the motor.

Our authorities are aware of the shortcomings with regards to professional driver training and have even endeavored to rectify the situation recently by addressing the standards. It’s to no avail though, because they conceded defeat after a brief public disapproval of the plan.

So it seems we are the authors of our own novels.

My opinions are not directed at the driver concerned in the recent incident, since the investigation is not concluded yet. This incident, however, serves to refresh my memory of many others similar in nature.

S Sadler

Dear Editor,

Having viewed the video clip regarding the hor-rifi c Pinetown crash, I sincerely sympathise with all families who have lost their loved ones to that accident. I would like to share some experience with other road users.

We all have noticed that people do not respect traffi c laws anymore. Let’s use intersections with

BEING RIGHT WON’T SAVE YOUR LIFE

Dear Editor,

I found myself disagreeing with Stuart Moir’s opinion piece Those times they a-changin’ in week 37’s issue.

I felt that you spoke on behalf of those people who can afford the luxuries of life. While others bask in the glories of affording fancy mechanics or fancy cars that come with a full service every three months, I live in a community where seeing a man under his car every weekend is nothing but the highlight of his life.

As more and more woman drivers emerge, the work of the ‘father’ has multiplied. Every weekend we have oil-stained dads parading our streets after a job well done at fi xing Mom’s car and to top it off, he didn’t even have to spend a penny on it. The men in our community pride themselves in being able to do just that one task women can’t do, therefore they will not belittle themselves by taking their cars to a garage when they can fi x it themselves.

Personally, I have found that taking your car to fancy dressed mechanics is just a delay in fi nding the real problem. You take your car for a service and when they drop it off, there is a can of oil and a small part that they claim was removed from your car. How can you as a man be satisfi ed with another man’s hard work? The habit of taking Wifey’s car for a service has also cut down the romance in relationships. Try changing your wife’s fl at tyre and she will make your day.

Sarah Petersen

PROUD HOME MECHANICS robots as an example. We see on a daily basis people driving through red traffi c lights at intersections. My advice to you: please check both your left- and right-hand sides before crossing intersections, regardless of the robot being green or not. Let us cross intersections only if we have checked and it is safe to do so. Let’s not assume that because the traffi c light is green, we have ‘right of way.’ I have witnessed a few accidents at an intersection where people were injured and even killed, but had right of way. An ‘I am right attitude’ is not going to save your life.

Let’s also take into consideration those drivers with fake licences, because they are out there, but unfortunately we cannot identify them by the type of vehicles they drive. There are a lot of loopholes for people to obtain driver’s licences. Our authorities are failing us. So sad.

Just think about the major causes of road ac-cidents in South Africa: unroadworthy vehicles, drunk driving, lack of concentration because of a cell phone or some other gizmo, bad driving habits, excessive speed, driving while tired and just being plain idiotic and reckless. All of the above causes for an accident that can be completely removed if the driver took a second to ask themselves two questions: is this legal and am I placing other road users in harm’s way as a result of this? See, it’s actually not that hard.

The two things we can blame G overnment for are lack of law enforcement and setting a bad example. Too much emphasis is placed on speed trapping and not enough is done to curb other bad habits that cause more accidents. Yes, we need to nab speedsters, but we also need to remove other bad habits from the road, not to mention the issues with corrupt offi cials. We maintain our bad habits simply because we know there won’t be any real consequences. Bribe an offi cial and be on your merry way.

The bad-example part is what really gets me. The presidency says it’s shocked, but how can it be when its own MECs have this nasty habit of turning their blue lights on and running people over? How does Government expect the rest of us to behave in a courteous manner when this is the example that’s being set for us? What really angers me about this blue-light conundrum is the fact that it’s so easily avoidable. In most cases, a person was run down because the VIP in the rear seat was late for a meeting. Here’s an idea Mr VIP: leave a bit earlier for the meeting.

This lack of respect for the law and each other is the most important road-safety issue. Almost every other road-death-related concern stems directly from it.

The families of those 27 people and the 10 girls who died in an accident the week before deserve action. Otherwise we’ll move on to the next thing the week after. These 37 people deserve more than that.

GERHARD HORN

•adThe remains of one of the vehicles involved in the tragic Field’s Hill accident. Photo: ER24

By the time you read this, the brouhaha sur-rounding the Field’s Hill crash in KwaZulu-Natal will be a thing of the past. The few people whose comments matter when it comes to road safety would have sent their condolences to the families of the dearly departed, while the rest of us would have already had our obligatory moan around the braai. Life goes on, but it shouldn’t.

I think one of the main reasons crashes like these keep on happening is because we forget so easily. We latch onto the next horror story and forget all about the problem we were whimpering about the week before. It’s a never-ending circle of death that simply doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

A prime example is the presidency’s reaction to the Field’s Hill accident in which 27 people lost their lives. A spokesperson said acting president Jeff Radebe was shocked at the news.

Really? Shocked? In a country where around 35 people are killed on the roads every day? Shock implies that you weren’t expecting the news. I can think of around fi ve similar accidents that took place over the past year.

The only thing that’s shocking about this ac-cident is the high death count. One second, 27 people were on their way to their families. A second later they were mangled and strewn across

a busy blood-soaked intersection. Who’s to blame? I’ve read all the reports and

user comments on various news websites and it appears as if the driver is the culprit. News reports suggest he had been using his phone at the time, but, in all honesty, nobody knows what the truth is. His arrest the following day suggests he’s at fault, but until the court case happens he remains an innocent man.

My heart goes out to everyone who lost a loved one, but I can’t help but feel sorry for the man be-hind the wheel. Don’t get me wrong, though. If he’s guilty, he deserves to be punished so the grieving families can get the closure they so deserve, but I can’t help but feel that he’s inadvertently ended up as the face of a problem that’s far bigger than this one single incident.

The user comments on the internet offer some ideas on the subject. There seems to be great support for the banning of trucks and buses from suburbia and restricting the times these vehicles are allowed on the road. A few people also point their fi ngers at the local government that doesn’t even seem to have a grip on a faulty traffi c-light issue, while a select few blame corrupt police offi cials.

I love blaming issues on corrupt offi cials, but in this case the problem is bigger still. The prob-lem, I think, is one we’ve discussed endlessly in this paper. In South Africa, we have little to no respect for the laws of the road and for the lives of our fellow road users. It’s an intense rat race where there’s no room for compassion and no time to think about the consequences of your actions.

Beware of opportunistic criminals. JOHANNESBURG – Leading estate agents have urged prospective sellers to exercise caution when putting their houses up for show to prevent opportunistic criminals from targeting their most prized possessions.

Regional sales manager for the Rawson Property Group in the Western Cape, Nancy Todd, says while criminals targeting show houses is by no means a new phenomenon, there has been a spike in incidents over the past two or three years.

Todd says the criminal activity tends to occur in waves with either one person or more targeting show houses. There have been incidents of an individual distracting an agent while accomplices help themselves to small, easily conveyable items.

“In some cases they have used colleagues to distract the attention of house sitters or agents and have even managed

to remove fairly big items, such as paintings and garden hoses,” she says. In a rather bizarre move, Todd says a so-called prospective buyer helped himself to a beer in a fridge while other items which are commonly stolen are jewellery, perfume and make-up.

Security measures

This has obliged estate agents to put extra precautions in place like hiring security companies, asking for the identity documents of prospective buyers and only allowing access to limited parties at any given time.

She adds that in some instances security companies are alerted to the fact that ‘show days’ are being held and a panic button is assigned to an agent in the event of an emergency.

Todd says prospective buyers should not be offended when agents insist on identifi cation or limit the number of viewers to the property at any given time but should rather see it as the estate agency protecting the interests of the seller.

Manager for Pam Golding’s Atlantic Seaboard and city

bowl area in Cape Town, Basil Moriaitis says common sense should prevail when sellers put their houses on show: “Lock your valuables or whatever is necessary away as if you are moving out and renting your home to someone for a (specifi c) period of time. Put away your sentimental stuff.”

Moriaitis says incidents of criminality in this particular area are minuscule. “It does happen where personal items have gone missing but the number is small and infrequent. We feel strongly that open days are a fundamental way to sell in our market. It works.”

Todd also stresses that sellers should not be put off by this crime phenomenon as show houses often attract buyers who would otherwise not have shown any interest in the property. “It generates unexpected buyers,” and remains an important part of the selling process.”

The suburbs SA’s richest call home

Sandton is SA’s banking and wealth centre - WealthInsight. Most of Joburg’s wealthiest live in Sandhurst, according to a London-based consultancy WealthInsight report.

With 36 multimillionaires, Sandhurst accounts for the largest proportion of Johannesburg’s ultra high net worth individuals (UHNWIs). In second place is Bryanston.

It quotes the report as saying Sandton, including Sandhurst, Sandown, Morningside, Hyde Park, Melrose, Atholl and a number of other suburbs, is home to over half of Johannesburg’s UHNWIs.

The report states that a number of companies, particularly the JSE, moved their head offi ces to Sandton, following increased crime between 1990 and 2000in Johannesburg’s city centre.

Sandton continued to grow strongly between 2000 and 2011 and “is considered to be the banking and wealth centre of South Africa.”

Amla achieves cricketing gloryTAMARA [email protected]

PROTEA batsman, Hashim Amla won South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year award at the Cricket South Africa Awards held at Sandton Convention Centre.

This is the second time Amla has claimed the title and joins Makhaya Ntini (2005 and 2006) and Jacques Kallis (2004 and 2011) as two-time winners.

According to Cricket South Africa’s website, Amla was nominated in fi ve categories and won four of them, which included the Sunfoil Test Cricketer of the Year and SA Fans’ Cricketer of the Year. His historic treble century in The Oval Test against England won him the KFC So Good

award. AB de Villiers picked up his second award as the SA Players’ Player of the Year and Dale Steyn won the title of KFC T20 International Player of the Year.

Kallis went home with the Ram Slam delivery of the year award by dismissing his old rival, Ricky Ponting of Australia, in the second Test match at the Adelaide Oval.

Marizanne Kapp was awarded South African Women’s Cricketer of the Year and Kyle Abbott was named SA Newcomer of the Year. Cricket SA’s CEO Haroon Lorgat said it had been another amazing year for the country’s top players.

“It is not easy to keep fi nding special words to speak about Hashim,” he said. “He has set SA record Test scores since

unity against both England and Australia and he is the fi rst player to score a Test treble century for our country.

As if that is not remarkable enough he is also the number one rated player on the ICC rankings for Test and ODI players.”

In the domestic professional category the top awards went to Geoffrey Toyana for Coach of the Year, Kyle Abbott for Domestic Players’ Player of the Year, Johann Louw for Sunfoil Series cricketer of the season and Richard Levi for Momentum One-Day Cup cricketer of the season. Quinton de Kock won the Ram Slam cricketer of the season and the Khaya Majola Lifetime Achievement Award went to Hoosain Ayob for services to the game as player and coach.

Cricketer of the year award... Hashim Alma receives the Cricketer of the Year trophy for the second time at the Cricket South Africa awards.

Cubs enjoy cycle day and achieving full pontentialCHRONICLE [email protected]

CUB Scouts of the Sandton District, along with their families, participated in a cycle day outing at Northern Farms.

About 73 members of the fi rst Bryanston, Morningside, Parkmore, Peter Place and River Trail groups took part.

Two basic routes of six and 12km were provided, while for the more skilled riders there was a 20km course.

Event organiser, Craig Hudson said, “It provides an opportunity for parents to have fun with their children while experiencing the wonderful network of cycling trails that have been laid out on the farm.” After the ride there was also an opportunity for the Cubs to complete their cycling badges. To earn this badge, Cubs had to clean and oil their bicycles, mend a puncture correctly and demonstrate profi ciency in riding a bicycle.

The Cub programme caters for boys and girls in the seven to 11 year age group, and provides adventurous outdoor based activities aimed at developing character and self confi dence. Once a Cub turns 11 years of age, they join a Scout troop where a more advanced programme of leadership development is provided to help young people to achieve their full potential.

Details: www.gautengscouts.co.za, or 011-440-6491. Ride it... Two boys enjoy the Cycle Day at Northern Farms.

Raz has participated in marathons in London, New York,

Paris, and next is Jerusalem. “I enjoy the experience of running for a cause and being part of the magic. Training as a group is an amazing experience,” said Raz.
