Everyday, we go through strict security checks in the Metro — first, you’re frisked, next, your luggage scanned, and any gadgets – batteries and the like in your bag, seen with suspicion and checked and re-checked manually to make you feel like a terrorist. The situation is almost the same in our offices, with the CCTVs and IT tabs. We can’t take pictures of most places in our own city; you will be asked hundreds of questions the moment a flash comes on. And it’s hard to believe that our civilised society advocates not trusting your neighbours, your co- travellers, and keeping miles away from strangers. It takes a lot from us … this behaviour is slow poison for our social values, and it is in this context that Talking to Terrorists by BBC’s investigative reporter, Peter Taylor, helps us think differently. The root of terrorism has to be addressed; strict security is not enough to resolve the conflict, according to the book. Taylor, through his journey of 40 years — from the ‘Bloody Sunday’ -1972 to 9/11 — slowly uncovers the lethal phenomenon from the eyes of not an outsider, but an insider. IRA to Al Qaeda, he comes face to face with the ‘enemy’ and tries to grasp their motivation to explore why individuals are prepared to kill for a cause, and why suicide bombers are prepared to kill themselves too. This book touches a very sensitive subject – or subjectivity, of the word ‘terrorist’. Who should be called a terrorist, and what really makes or unmakes one? There are a lot of examples in history to testify that some ‘terrorists’ go on to become Presidents - transformation of terrorists into statesmen. And no, this doesn’t deserve to be gunned down.
