Happy Thanksgiving this week at least in the US! This month’s issue includes several announcements and recent successes. There are several articles that detail interesting orders and an exciting update about the NASA Goddard James Webb Space Telescope test system. Also note some upcoming webinars and 2016 tradeshows.

Recent Successes and Articles

New DP 901 Six Channel Analyzer Bought by Optical Sciences

The first dP 900 Series order in the US southern region was made by optical Sciences corporation (oSc or optical). optical specifically acquired a 6 channel 901 dynamic Signal Analyzer (dP901-30-6c). oSc’s application use for the 901 is to do building vibration analysis that is necessary to assure the quality and integrity of their r&d, production, test, maintenance and repair operations associated with their optical and sensor technologies used by the U.S. Army.

data Physics was picked primarily because oSc was assuming responsibility for building vibration tests that were formerly done by another contractor, TMc, using the dP Quattro system. After presenting both the Quattro and the 901 solutions to them, it was decided to use the new 901 system so that they would have the latest technology, and be positioned for pos-sible future applications and uses. They had confidence in the dP systems based on the experiences and recommendations of TMc. oSc briefly considered other solutions from others but there was really no significant competition. The presenta-tion and demonstration of the Quattro and 901 systems and the Signalcalc software went well. Information and evidence of our experience and capabilities in making standard and specific (building vibration measurements) helped. reference and recommendation from another dP user (TMc) also contributed.

optical Sciences corporation is an oeM and a contractor that does a lot of work at U.S. Army redstone. oSc manufactures custom sensor test equipment and provides high quality technical and engineering support services to the U.S. Army, NASA, and private aerospace/defense corporations. Since 1989, optical Sciences corporation personnel have been active members in the development and operation of the Hardware-In-the-loop (HWIl) facilities within the Aviation and Mis-sile research, development and engineering center (AMrdec) of the research development and engineering command (rdecoM) at redstone Arsenal. central to this effort has been the development, characterization, operation, and mainte-nance of state-of-the-art dynamic infrared scene projection technologies.

MDOF Technology in Pharmaceuticals Expands Reach of NVT Group

NVT’s new integrated corporate structure has allowed us to work more effectively in delivering MdoF (Multiple-degree-of-Freedom) technology to our combined customer base. This new structure combines the MdoF hardware technology of Team corporation with the control technology of data Physics, applying it to the traditional commercial lansmont markets. This has allowed us to introduce this now integrated technology and secure an order for Team’s 6 doF cube (http://www.teamcorporation.com/The-cUBe) controlled by data Physics’ Signal Star Matrix controller (http://www. dataphysics. com/products-and-solutions/vibration-controllers-signalstar/signalstar-matrix. html) to a traditional lansmont customer in the pharmaceutical industry.

This US based pharmaceutical manufacturer will be using this 6doF system inside a climatic chamber to investigate the effects of transportation vibration in a combined environment (temperature, humidity, and pressure) on their biologics, a relatively new “targeted” therapy approach using delicate, live, engineered enzymes and proteins that is revolutionizing the pharma industry. Much still needs to be learned about the effects of vibration on these evolving therapies and NVT is at the forefront of these real-world study and simulation efforts delivery and employing lansmont’s Field-to-lab methodology (http://www. lansmont. com/support/field-to-lab-professional-services/).

NASA Goddard- James Webb Space Telescope Test System Update

Joel Hoksbergen has been leading a large group of engineers from Team, data Physics and lansmont. The group has been collaborating to integrate and test all of the critical components and assemblies in preparation of final acceptance testing on the Vertical and Horizontal Vibration Test Systems at Goddard Space Flight center. The le-5022-3 shakers have all passed the standard Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) protocols using data Physics test masses. The Horizontal system, including the shaker and slip table, has been tested to full acceptance levels. A special test mass was fabricated to simulate the overturning and yaw moment qualification tests on the T-Film Slip Table system, which has performed per specifica-tions through all of the tests to date. This is a significant step towards final acceptance of this system, with just a few more details to be wrapped up before final acceptance is achieved.

A key milestone was achieved earlier this month with the arrival and installation of the Guided Vertical Head expander System. The customer’s requirements for very low cross-axis response with a need for a very large table proved to be im-possible for any other vibration test equipment manufacturer to offer a viable solution. In the procurement process NASA provided a model of the spacecraft so its dynamic characteristics could be modeled along with the Vertical Head expander. This arrangement allowed for the most comprehensive model of a complex test article so there were no unforeseen engi-neering challenges during test. It has been mentioned many times in the past, but it is worth noting that the James Webb Space Telescope is expected to have a price tag of approximately $8 Billion USd, so it goes without saying the stakes are high in getting the design as close to NASA’s desired specifications as possible. After many iterations, the engineering group at Team, led by doug lund, was able to deliver a design that NASA could be confident would work without risking damage to the test article. We look forward to the final acceptance of both systems and will report back as further signifi-cant progress is achieved.

Team and Data Physics Superior Capabilities win Picatinny Order

data Physics was involved in a bid several years back for a control system with the Navy IHeodTd detachment at Picatinny. data Physics did not win the initial project, it went to Spectral dynamics. The controller that the Navy purchased was sup-posed to work with two TeAM cube systems. When the initial acceptance of the cube systems was to be done at Team, it was then determined that the Spectral System was not able to do the required Multi-Shaker Multi-axis test. TeAM was forced to find a system that worked to get the Navy to accept the 2 cube systems so that they could receive pay-ment. Team came to data Physics to rent a system. Team relied on the expertise that Tom reilly and Tom Villano provided to train the Team staff on the system and perform the set up for the acceptance test. The test was completed and the Navy accepted the Team cubes. It then became obvious that the Spectral system was unable to complete the required tests. They tried to work through the issues without success. The navy was forced to wait until funding was available again to get a system that would perform the required tests.

More than 2 years later the funding became available. Working closely with our contact at Picatinny, we were able to es-tablish the capabilities of the data Physics solution. The Navy decided that the data Physics system was what they wanted and needed. The problem was that if the project went out to bid, then they could end up with a different system. The best way for Picatinny to ensure that they got the system that they wanted was to incorporate a required demonstration into the solicitation.

data Physics was able to perform the demonstration systems capabilities with a high success rate where the other groups fell short. data Physics was awarded the project for the 12 output Matrix Systems that have the ability to be expanded in the future. The order was placed in the closing hours of the 2015 budget year for the US government. This big win was a good example of the superior capabilities of the data Physics Matrix system and will only help to amplify our capabilities over competitors in the future.

Aberdeen System Acquisition Enhances Research for Multi-Axis Testing

This was a project that was based on research conducted at the University of Maryland with strong ties to the cAlce group that both Team and data Physics are a part of. one of the graduating Phds was looking to create a Multi-axis test system to prove the greater reliability of test data when performing a multi axis test instead of testing in each direction independently. This research could be a huge asset for strengthening the argument for data Physics and Team corpora-tion systems.

The Purchase was collaboration between Team and data Physics. There was a large Tensor system utilizing data Physics Amplifiers and a Matrix controller. one of the last minute additions to the purchase was a GW-V400 shaker system. It is in-tended to be used for some smaller test articles in vertical orientation as well. There will also be strong collaboration with local universities moving forward, resulting in additional sales. This project will assist in greater visibility to the industry and continue to present the NVT Group as the leaders in Multi-Axis Test.

AIRBUS Defense and Space Reorders Support and Service

Airbus defence and Space recently reordered support and service for the data Physics analyzers and controllers that it owns. Airbus purchased analyzers in 2002 and a controller several years ago. The application is for measurements on mili-tary airplane components and for evaluating flight test vibration data.

Airbus possesses a 256 channel Abacus system (8 chassis). The software used with these chassis includes 256 channel normal mode analysis, 32 channel vibration analysis (Mobilyzer sw), and 64 channel vibration control (controlling an exist-ing ldS shaker). Airbus also has a 4 channel Ace Quattro with dSA Software (recently extended to 64 channels), which is mainly used for acoustic analysis.

Airbus has a support contract with data Physics and orders a yearly extension every year. They seem to be very satisfied with the technical support they received from George Sanchez in France and myself (ludwig liedl in Germany).

Airbus Military is the only military and civic transport and surveillance aircraft builder to develop, vend and support an all inclusive family of aircraft.

Seminars in the Netherlands by ABtronix

ABtronix B.V. recently hosted a full one-day Turbomachinery Vibration Analysis Seminar in Breda, Netherlands. Ad Bastiaanssen, President of ABtronix, kicked off the event with a short introduction of ABtronix vibration testing prod-ucts and service capabilities before turning over the seminar to data Physics presenters rob Bloomquist and Georges Sanchez. Topics covered during the seminar included phase, orbit and shaft centerline, transient, and other analysis techniques for rotating machinery, along with impact hammer testing and transfer function analysis.

The event was attended by rotating machinery experts from major turbomachinery manufacturers such as Sulzer Turbo Services, end-user facility companies, and independent turbomachinery consultants. Given a mix of presentation and live demonstrations, attendees were fully engaged throughout the day, participating with questions and comments. A highlight of the event was live capture and display of vibration data from a rotor demonstration rig using the Signalcalc Turbo application. This data was presented to the group for analysis to identify rotor resonances (Figure 1). Georges Sanchez then performed an impact hammer and transfer function analysis of the same system with the dynamic Signal Analysis application (Figure 2), verifying resonances previously noted as well as identifying additional resonances at higher frequencies.

Shock and vibration testing in the lithium ion battery industry is a business growth oppor-tunity for the NVT Group. lansmont’s eastern Area Manager, Jim Breault, and America’s Sales Manager, Bryan Williams, represented NVT at the lithium Battery Power and Battery Safety conference that took place in Baltimore on No-vember 17 – 19. Several of the Battery Safety conference presentations stressed the im-portance of testing and simulation as well as proper packaging for transportation of lithium ion batteries. Air shipment was a hot topic—both literally and figuratively—that was ad-dressed specifically in presentations by NTSB, IATA, IcAo, U.S. doT, and Fedex. While each of these groups may have a different perspec-tive and focus on what the future of shipping lithium batteries will entail, they all agree that regulated testing is absolutely critical for safe battery design and shipment.
