Voice Recording and Playback Feature

Voice Recording, available in Data Physics’ SignalCalc Dynamic Signal Analyzer and SignalStar Vibration Controller soft-ware as part of throughput to disk analysis, allows the user to utilize an input channel to record voice as a commentary during the test.

High profile tests often require customers to monitor key events that happen during the test. There are a variety of pos-sible events. Some examples are a resonance of a component in a satellite, a bearing problem on a turbo compressor, and a gear mesh situation in a rotating machine. Monitoring an event involves taking a lot of notes during testing such as the type of event, time it happened, and length of the event. The notes will help the user identify the event during post analysis. Not only is the process time consuming, but it poses the risk of misplacing the documentation at a later time.

An alternative approach to manual book keeping is to use an external tape recorder to record voice data. However, it adds unnecessary complexity and increases the amount of time needed for testing.

The voice annotations of the Voice Recording feature provide a good solution to this problem. The annotations are syn-chronized in time with the data collected across all channels. During playback, the voice recording may be used as a cue channel to identify significant events guiding the playback analysis process.

SignalCalc turbo – Synergies with other types of Products

One challenge many representatives and distributors face is how to effectively manage sales of multiple product lines across their customer base. Sometimes, sales efforts must be directed to multiple groups of target customers because of differences in applications. For example, test engineers performing environmental testing in a lab environment have somewhat different instrumentation needs than do rotating machinery experts balancing turbines in a power plant.

There are many synergies within target customer groups, however, which bring several different types of product ap-plications into play simultaneously. The ability to deliver a comprehensive solution leveraging different product lines, and also the ability to offer solutions for multiple user groups with a single customer organization, is of obvious benefit - to both the end-user and seller. SignalCalc Turbo shares a number of notable synergies with other products targeting the rotating machinery market, most notably with rotating machinery manufacturers, industrial end-user experts, and universities.

Rotating machinery manufacturers

The rotating machinery manufacturer target customer group presents the greatest number of potential product syn-ergies with SignalCalc Turbo. A large manufacturing facility for turbines, compressors, pumps, or electric motors, for example, will usually have multiple requirements for testing of their machines and components. These tests may of-ten be performed by completely different departments, though in the same facility. One group of personnel may be performing high-speed rotor dynamics validation and factory acceptance testing on rotor systems in one area of the factory, while another group may be performing vibration and modal testing of individual machine components, such as turbine blades in a different part of the facility.

Collectively, these two sub-groups have diverse test and measurement needs including:

• Turbomachinery vibration analyzers (SignalCalc Turbo) • Dynamic signal analyzers • Shakers• Controllers• Modal analysis software• Environmental chambers • Transducers

With these potential synergies in mind, sales efforts at these facilities can yield multiple sets of contacts, and hence sales opportunities for a variety of applications.

Industrial End-Users and Consultants

“In-house” rotating machinery experts at industrial end-user companies in the power generation and oil and gas indus-tries, as well as independent consultants serving these industries, also have diverse testing and instrumentation needs that highlight a number of product synergies. Complex troubleshooting projects in the industrial plant environment often require integration of several testing applications before a thorough understanding of rotating machine vibration problems can be reached. One such application, which SignalCalc Turbo supports, is startup and shutdown (transient) vibration analysis.

In addition to a vibration analyzer, many vibration experts carry an assortment of temporary-mount transducers in their toolbox to supplement permanently installed transducers or to instrument machines without any permanent monitor-ing. On such a complex project, impact testing and modal analysis of the supporting structure may also play a central role in understanding the dynamics of the combined rotor-structure system and troubleshooting problems.

Altogether, instrumentation needs of rotating machinery experts in the field may include:

• Turbomachinery vibration analyzer (SignalCalc Turbo)• Dynamic signal analyzers• Modal analysis software• Transducers

technical Universities

Finally, many potential product synergies with SignalCalc Turbo exist at technical universities. While many university test labs focus on structural and modal testing, some universities offer rotor dynamics courses as part of their Mechani-cal Engineering curriculum. These universities often run test labs with rotating machinery test rigs fitted with transduc-ers for making dynamic measurements on rotors to validate computer model simulations. Given different engineering departments may be involved in test and measurement, customer contacts for these applications may be found in different groups.

Overall, potential test and measurement product synergies in the university environment may include:

• Turbomachinery vibration analyzer (SignalCalc Turbo)• Dynamic signal analyzers• Shakers• Controllers• Modal analysis software• Transducers

GoGo Selects Data Physics Vibration test System for In-flight Inter-net hardware Development

Commissioning and training was recently completed on a GW-V400LT shaker system with a 20” slip table and Scalar vibration controller at GoGo Inc. in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. GoGo is the leading provider of an inflight broadband internet service found on many commercial aircrafts today. Using their network and service, passengers with laptops and other Wi-Fi devices can get online after take-off.

The company began as a provider of voice communication for private aircraft in North America. Originally called Aircell, it then expanded and began offering Gogo Inflight Internet in 2008.

The technology requires both Air-to Ground and Satellite networks and is continuously evolving. Part of the system requires Wi-Fi routers much like those found in a restaurant or your home. The key difference is these electronic compo-nents are subjected to vibration and shock during takeoff, touchdown and turbulence during the flight process. They must also fit in a designated space in the aircraft electronics bay. The Reliability Teams at GoGo had been using a local test lab to perform vibration and temperature testing according to DO-160 and RTCA standards. Cost and delays began to build and they contacted Data Physics a year ago to investigate buying their own shaker.

After evaluating numerous configurations and vendors, the GW-V400LT on a monobase with Scalar controller was or-dered. Data Physics was chosen for several reasons including:

1. The rented facility had limited space and utilities for a large shaker but they needed a system of handling the 12” deep ARINC tray which holds the routers.

2. Our large 13” diameter armature table is unique in the industry for a 1000 lbf shaker. Most all competitors are half this size.

3. They could not penetrate the roof with the blower ducting and had other tenants next door. Noise was a con-cern. Our blower is small and relatively quiet.

4. We were able to meet their limited budget with a small system capable of running all their vibration profiles.

5. This was their first shaker and a significant effort was made by the local rep, Regional Manager, and Applica-tion Engineering Support to assist them with the process.

6. Even though GoGo initially wanted a VR controller due to previous experience, the total solution from Data Physics, including the Scalar controller, proved to be optimal.

7. Data Physics guided slip table is unique in this size range and beneficial to minimize cross axial motion. Data Physics competition has no table guidance and no edge guards to prevent debris from getting in the oil.

8. They had previous experience with LE and our Service Department.

Data Physics manufactures the broadest line of shakers in the Industry. Data Physics has the most models with different size armatures and amplifiers to suit any requirement or budget.
