Advanced Techniques for Turbomachinery Vibration Analysis on Tuesday, June 9

Robert Bloomquist, Product Manager, SignalCalc Turbo, will present. A comprehensive vibration data set captured on a large rotating machine still needs “smart” input from the user before results can be presented in the best format for analysis. In this webinar, you will learn about techniques needed to extract the most value from the vibration measure-ments you make on turbomachinery.

In this session, we will cover best practices and applications of:

• Slow Roll Vector and Waveform Compensation• DC Gap Reference• Shaft Average Centerline analysis• Shaft Absolute computation• Full Spectrum analysis• Mode shape identification• High-spot and heavy spot relationships• Rotor unbalance response measurements

Packaging Company of America Purchases SignalCalc for Peace of mind

Packaging Company of America (PCA), a box manufacturer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, acquired two 4 channel Quattro systems and additional DSA capabilities for Quattro and Mobilyzer. PCA was very familiar with Data Physics as they already have Mobilyzer and Quattro systems. PCA needed similar systems so they came back to DP due to their sat-isfaction with the products. No competition was involved in this order.

In terms of product applications, PCA uses Data Physics analyzers for maintenance and diagnostics of their manufac-turing systems by doing standard vibration measurements and RPM-based measurement with Mobilyzer and Quattro hardware, and SignalCalc software.

Their internal service and support team has been using the Data Physics systems since 2011 in order to keep their manu-facturing systems running smoothly with minimal down time. They use SignalCalc capabilities to monitor and diagnose problems with their machines so that they can be quickly remedied and or repaired.

PCA is one of the largest producers of containerboard and corrugated packaging products in the U.S. They have over 120 facilities — including five containerboard mills and 94 manufacturing locations across the U.S.

Automotive Parts maker Yachiyo Replaces EmIC Controllers with SignalStar Vector

Data Physics vibration control software products are continually evolving to incorporate customer feedback for both product enhancements as well as product maintenance. With each new major release, new functionality is added to the product. This article focuses on a few of the enhancements incorporated in the latest release of SignalStar Controller Version 2.5.

The Yachiyo R&D Center in Columbus, Ohio was established in July 2008 to design, test and research sunroofs and fuel tanks manufactured at their North American plants. They are a major supplier to Honda in the USA and overseas.

Their goal was to improve R&D efficiency by enhancing cooperation and coordination with manufacturing of domestic and overseas automobile manufacturers and quickly respond to their needs.

When the facility was built, two EMIC vibration tests systems were installed to duplicate the systems used in Japan. One is under an environmental chamber for gas tanks and one is an ambient three axis system for sun roofs. This is a very typical scenario for Japanese parts manufacturers setting up business in the USA. EMIC is a large Japanese shaker manufacturer but offers limited support capabilities in North America. Technicians from Japan were brought in annu-ally at a high cost to calibrate the controllers and sensors at Yachiyo. The local rep, RDP, had proposed for years that new domestic controllers and sensors would pay for themselves very quickly, but the culture was resistant to change.

When one of the controller computers died in late February, the repair quote from EMIC was very high to replace the hardware and software. The new Lab Manager felt the time was right to make a change and avoid the high calibration costs. He contacted RDP again and we arranged for an on-site demonstration.

Prior to the visit, we asked the customer to supply us with the test profiles. As a result we were up and running their tests very quickly after arriving. This step is worth the extra effort prior to giving a controller demo, especially when running a prospect’s shaker.

Although most of the vibration testing is basic random, sine and replication, some special requirements were needed. These tests run for long durations, so test sequencing to stack up multiple profiles was required. This is a standard op-tion with DP760-43 Remote Operation via Active X Communication. For the Sun Roof shaker, remote control of the sine sweep was needed while standing next to the shaker to listen for BSR (buzz, squeak & rattle). Senior Applications Engi-neer, Tom Villano, came up with a simple solution to use a remote wireless keyboard connected to the host PC. The F11 and F12 function keys allow changes to the sweep frequency up or down with the Hz increment set in the software.

Lastly, our re-calibration software allows Yachiyo to calibrate the controller in-house or at a local lab at a fraction of the cost to calibrate the EMIC controller.

A week after the demo, an order was replaced for the SignalStar Vector 4C controller to replace the one on the Gas Tank test stand. A second order is expected soon to replace the controller on the Sun Roof test stand with the same Vector system.

Providing additional support and demonstrations proved beneficial in forging a solid relationship with this customer.

Yachiyo has plants in Japan, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam, India, China, Indonesia, England and Germany.

New orleans Acquires a Complete Shaker System for testing Small Flexible Structures

The University of New Orleans, located predictably in New Orleans, Louisiana, bought a SignalForce V20 shaker system with with Monobase Slip Table Assembly and Head Plate, and a SignalStar Vector Controller. The products are being used for mechanical engineering and various types of research at the university.

Data Physics was selected because we can provide a com-plete solution for testing small flexible structures. Although LabWorks competed for the order, ultimately Data Physics won it due to our existing relationship that involved lots of education and consultation with the customer. DP and our Rep (T&M Instruments) provided education and consulting for their understanding of vibration test systems and capa-bilities, etc. The sales process resulting in the order took over a year. This demonstrates the value in building long term cus-tomer relationships.

Why Do I Need a Drive Adapter for this Slip table System?A drive adapter is basically what its name states: an adapter that connects the shaker to the slip plate. The drive adapter provides a transition from the shaker’s armature pattern to the slip plate. The typical drive adapter provided by Data Physics is either a welded construct or cast part. Both configurations are manufactured from magnesium so that they are as light as possible; rigid as possible; and damped as much as possible. All three of these characteristics, weight, rigidity, and damping are critical when conducting vibration testing.

Data Physics drive adapters attach to the shaker’s entire armature pattern so that the maximum amount of the shaker’s force is transmitted to the slip plate. By design, the force of the LE shaker is transmitted from the coil of the armature and that is located on the outer bolt circle. This is why it is so important that the outer bolt circle is included in the attachment of a drive adapter, as well as head expanders, fixtures, etc.

The objective of the drive adapter is to transmit the force of the shaker to the slip plate. The slip plate holds the test article in position so that it may be vibrated. If the connection from the shaker to the slip plate is inadequate, this will cause transmis-sibility issues. Transmissibility issues are a nightmare because the shaker has to work harder than normal to vibrate the test article. Transmissibility issues can also be very difficult to control. Therefore, to reduce the chances of having a transmissibil-ity issue, due to an inadequate connection between the slip plate and the shaker, drive adapters are utilized.
