ABSTRACT
Dian Anggraini. C0312020. An Analysis of Translation Techniques and Translation Quality of Economic Terms in The Warren Buffett Portfolio: Mastering the Power of the Focus Investment Strategy Book. Undergraduate Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Sebelas Maret University. Surakarta. 2017
This research focuses on two issues, they are: 1) the categories of economic terms found in The Warren Buffett Portfolio: Mastering the Power of the Focus Investment Strategy book and the translation techniques applied in translating them, and (2) the impact of translation techniques toward the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability and readability.
This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The sampling technique in this research is purposive sampling. The data in this research are economic terms in the form of words and phrases, and information from raters and respondents. The data sources of this research are an economic book, its translation in Bahasa Indonesia, the raters and the respondents. The data were collected through content analysis, questionnaire distribution, interview, and focus group discussion.
The result of this research demonstrates that there are 190 data identified as economic terms in the book. Eight categories of economic terms found in the book are economic agent (24 data), economic activity (22 data), economic condition (16 data), economic indicator (70 data), types of market (6 data), investment (21 data), economic good (23 data), and economic theory (8 data). There are 10 techniques applied in translating economic terms, they are 152 data of established equivalent (80.0%), 12 data of borrowing (6.31%), 13 data of couplets (6.84%), 4 data of generalization (2.10%), 2 data of modulation (1.05%), 1 datum of triplets (0.52%), 3 data of literal translation (1.57%), 1 datum of amplification (0.52%), 1 datum of through translation (0.52%), and 1 datum of reduction (0.52%). The result shows that most of the data belong to accurate, acceptable, and readable translations, they are 175 data of accurate (92.1%), 12 data of less accurate (6.31%), 3 data of inaccurate (1.57%), 160 data of acceptable (84.21%), 27 data of less acceptable (14.21%), 3 data of unacceptable (1.57%), 137 data of readable (72.1%), 20 data of less readable (10.52%), 33 data of unreadable (17.36%).
The application of established equivalent and amplification techniques tend to produce qualified translation since the translations have the same concept in Bahasa Indonesia. By giving more details in target text also tends to produce qualified translation. Meanwhile, the application of borrowing, literal translation and modulation techniques tend to produce low quality translation since the use of equivalent meaning in TT is not common in the TL.
Keywords: economic terms, translation technique, translation quality, accuracy, acceptability, readability.
