If they like it in Paris, Milan, UKand Russia – and it is from Uitenha-ge – you should love it too!
In fact you might change yourmind and start liking winter-time once you’ve experiencedthe warmth, comfort and gentletouch of these mohair blanketsmanufactured in town.
Uitenhage is known for its automo-tive industry, but few locals areaware that it also is home to anotherexceptional industry which is fast be-coming a much sought after brand in-ternationally.
“Hinterveld’s private labellingcomprises 70% of the business withthe majority of our mohair productsbeing exported to clients in Paris, Mi-lan, UK, Germany, Tokyo, Russia andvarious other destinations,” saidJackie Gant, Marketing Manager ofHinterveld, weavers of mohair and
other natural fibres.“But we want to see more local cli-
ents at our factory shop here in Uiten-hage! Products at the factory shop arebranded as Windfall which means ‘astroke of good fortune’.
“We trial different designs for cus-tomers to choose from. Those that areleft over from the range exported arechannelled to our outlet and branded.Additionally we offer a Hinterveldstock supported range which allowscustomers to buy one or 100 of a specif-ic collection and design. Currently
some of the discontinued 2012 stocksupported range is available. Ourfactory shop also offers yarns andmohair socks.”
Hinterveld is part of a biggergroup, the Stucken Group, thatstarted 150 years ago. GrandfatherRudie Stucken came out from Ger-many after WWII and started hiswool trading business in Uitenhage. The Stuckens eventually boughtGubb & Inngs so that they couldwash, process and comb wool andmohair which is exported. A coupleof years ago the Stucken groupbought Mohair Spinners South Af-rica (MSSA). Three years ago theyadded Hinterveld weaving mill(previously Pure Cape Textiles) tothe Group
“Hinterveld also does private la-bour. In other words where clientscan decide on their own design andcolours and have it labelled, whichis ideal for customer or corporategifts.
“At Hinterveld mill, we are smallenough to collaborate with local de-signers, but big enough to competeinternationally,” said Gant.SHinterveld factory shop:Situated in Hendrik van Eck
Drive at the Riverside Industria.Trading hours: Mondays - Thurs-days 08:00-16:30 and Fridays 08:00-15:00.SHinterveld Mill tours:Small groups (10-12 persons). No

There are various drugs being sold inthe neighbourhoods of Uitenhage andDespatch. Communities in these are-
as are requested to assist Families AgainstDrugs support group in building a drug freesociety and to make a meaningful contribu-tion towards the national fight against sub-stance abuse.“Often the addiction occurs not through
an individual’s own choice but, through rea-sons beyond their control,” said SiehaamSa-lie from the Families Against Drugs supportgroup in Uitenhage.FAD has been running meetings in Uiten-
hage since April 2012 and is affiliated withFAD Port Elizabeth which was establishedin 2011.According to Salie the aimof FAD is to cre-
ate a support systemand a fellowship to fam-ilies who are affected by loved ones who un-fortunately became addicted to drugs.“If you have already used drugs and are
scared of becoming dependent, reach out toFAD and get help. Remember that, howevermuch trouble you think that you are goingto be in by asking for help, you will be in alot worse trouble if you do not.”Drugs fall into various categories: Depres-
sants include heroin, mandrax, and alcohol;stimulants include cocaine and ecstasy andhallucinogens such as LSD. These catego-ries of drugs can be smoked, inhaled, snort-ed, swallowed or injected.“Different drugs cause different feelings
and responses in individuals. Drugs can bevery dangerous in any form.
The more drugs an individual uses, themore drugs will be required and that is howthey become addicted.“Individuals require help and support to re-
cover from an addiction. Anybody who needsassistance with addiction is welcome to at-tend our meetings.”FAD Uitenhage meetings are on Tuesdays
19:30 or alternatively contact Gert on 0074257 6155 or Peter 0083 626 5093.
Family support meetingsFAD runs a family support group meeting
every Tuesday in Uitenhage at the Kameshpolice offices at 19:30. On Monday nights, anNA (narcotics anonymous) meeting is held atthe same venue and on Fridays at 18:30 a 12step meeting, convened by Gert.“We would like to thank the Kamesh police
andUitenhageHigh School for assisting FAD.Together we will make a difference in ourcommunity,” said Salie.

day at the C. W. Hendrickse Primary Schoolsports ground to promote drug awareness atprimary schools. Four primary schools (Dal-rose, Vérité, Seagull and C.W. Hendrickse)will compete in a mini-rugby tournament.Contributions towards the sports day will
