Party to visit‘butchery’ hospital>> IFP says they arelooking for answers

SIBUSISO BIYELA

THEInkathaFreedomParty (IFP)will conduct an oversight visit attheStangerHospitalafter there-

centreportsofpatientdeathsduetoal-leged negligence.

The oversight visit will be conduct-ed by IFP spokesperson for healthNcamisile Nkwanyana on Thursday,19 February.

Thevisithasbeenpromptedbyare-cent increase of reports of patients dy-ing allegedly at the hands of negligentpractitioners at the hospital.

On Monday, 2 February Them-bekile Mkhize (30) died shortly aftergiving birth.

“This hospital is being called a‘butchery’, where patients are dyingdue to negligence and the IFP want tosee action being taken against anyonefound to be guilty,” said Nkwanyana.

TheWeekly reported lastweek thatMkhizehadfallenseverelyillasaresultofhavingherbowelaccidentallypunc-tured during a caesarian-section pro-cedure. Unconfirmed reports indicatethat Mkhize died shortly after.

In November last year, FikelephiMfeka died after giving birth in a toiletat the hospital.

Sevennurseswerebelievedtobere-sponsible for the negligence that leadtoMfeka’s death andwere apparentlysuspended.

No onehas beenpointed out for therecent death of Mkhize as the depart-

ment has also not responded to ques-tions posed by the Weekly.

Among unanswered questions isthe concernofwhether there is aprev-alenceofsimilar incidentsat thehospi-talwhere apatient’s bowel is perforat-ed during a caesarian-section proce-dure.

It isunclearhowtheStangerHospi-tal stacks up against other KZN hospi-tals when it comes to mother/child fa-talities.

A spokesperson from the KZN De-partment of Health Agiza Hlongwanesaid the department is not allowed todivulge patient information.

When asked other questions re-gardingthehospitalhesaidthathewas

regarding thematter, but also indicat-ed that he will share information thatis in the interest of the public.

“not promising anything” buthe will “get to it” soon as hehas been “very busy”.

Thequestionswere sent tohim last Wednesday (11 Feb-ruary)viaemailwitha follow-up reminder on Mondaymorning.

He claimed he was await-ing a report from the hospital

Matter of fact:

The Stanger Weekly published lastweek (13 February) that theStanger Hospital had not responded to questions posed by theWeekly. However, spokesperson Slindile Mzila had forwarded all questions tothe KZN Department of Health torespond to media questions, andnot the hospital.

Darnallresidents get

answers>> After months of complaining anddemanding answers, iLembe clarifies“dirty” water in Darnall and Zamani

JYOTHI LALDAS

DARNALL and Zamaniresidents have been upin arms due to the “se-

verely poor” quality of water theyhave been forced to use over thepast couple of months.

Theyclaim, despiteanumberofcomplaints to the iLembe DistrictMunicipality, nothing has beendone to correct the discolorationor to allay their concerns.

Speaking to the Weekly, oneresident who chose to remainanonymous,saidthewatersup-ply is “dirty” and “half of thetime we have no water at all”.“Weare expected to drink this

water, cook with this water, bathwiththiswater.Wewill soonerendup

According to the District Munici-pality’swatermanagerforKwaDuku-za and Ndwedwe Elias Bhengu thewater is safe for consumption.

“All other aspects of quality aremet. Compliancy tests are done bi-monthly and submissions are madeto theDepartment ofWater andSani-tation for monitoring,” he said.

Manager of Water Quality foriLembeRaynundGaneshsaid the lat-est sample which was taken on 21January 2015 indicated no chronichealth effect for bothmanganese andiron.

However, from an aesthetic (visu-al) perspective the results exceed thestandard recommended limits fordrinking water.

“Since the last four months (fromOctober 2014), with low water levelsin most areas, the water quality hasdeteriorated with only 42% compli-ance in turbidity which is caused byaesthetic levels in iron exceeding therecommendedlimits (onlycomplying58%),” he said.

iLembe has engaged the DarnallMill, which supplieswater to Zamaniand Darnall on its behalf regardingthe treatment of water.

As possible solutions, the DarnallMillhasraisedtheextractionpointby300mm and this change is beingmonitored. They are also pre-treat-ing water by pre-chlorination andlime-dosing.

AFTER fielding numerous com-plaints about the water supply inBlythedale, the iLembeDistrictMu-nicipality is in the process of fixingageing infrastructure to ensurebet-ter supply.

Water supply in the BlythedaleBeachareahasbeen intermittentoflate due to the aging infrastructureand subsequent breaks in the sup-ply mains.

According to the KwaDukuzaand Ndwedwe Water Manager foriLembe Elias Bhengu, Blythedale isa very sandy area and it is difficultto locate leaks.

“At timesweaugment the supplyvia theKwaDukuzaCBDsupply.Weonly do thatwhen there is lowpres-sure as a result of water leaks,” hesaid.

iLembe is currently busy withpipe replacement projects inBlythedale as well as in StangerManor and Zinkwazi.

Hesaidthepurposeoftheproject

is to replace and upgrade ageingwater reticulation infrastructurewhich is in poor condition and toprovide a safe and reliable waternetwork to KwaDukuza.

Existing pipes will be replacedwith PVC pipes (50mm – 350mm)with installation of new pipe fittingandspecials includingPRV’s, isolat-ing valves, air valves, scour valves, chambers, valve markers and firehydrants.

Meter audits will be undertakenaswellasrelocationofwatermetersto property boundaries.

The Blythedale contract wasawarded to Mvumisi Projects on 4June2014with constructionbegin-ning on 1 September 2014. Con-structionisexpectedtoendon5Maythis year.

“There will be planned shut-downsduring theproject andas thedistrictwewill try to keep thewaterinterruptions to at least a fewhoursandnotdays.Weaskforyourunder-standing and co-operation in thisregard,” said Bhengu.

Responding to thecomplaints, iLembe is-sued a press statementsaying due to high man-ganese and iron contentin the Darnall Dam, cus-tomers inDarnallandZa-mani have had to endureaesthetically displeasingwater.

How can we teachmorals without religion?

IHAVE often wondered how atheists andsecular people go through life withoutGod.I have asked myself what hope you have

for the future without a supernatural beingin your corner looking out for you, and I havewondered even more what morals mean tosomeone who is Godless (Godfree?).

The first decade of my life was quite turbulent as my family consisting of at leastfour children at a time and my mother neverreally stayed in one place for more than ayear or two. In this way, I do not rememberthat we settled and subscribed to anychurch as a result.

I really got exposed to the life of church

much later in the decade and only then wasI smart enough to ask myself some questions.

If memory serves, I think I was nine andsuffering the pain of my first (of many) wisdom tooth. I asked myself, who is God?

From what I had seen at the time I concluded that God was there to keep humanbeings in order and to try to keep them fromkilling each other.

Satisfied with my answer, I reasonedthat since I was a good person at the timethat I did not need God and that I did notneed religion.

As time went by and as I listened topriests from all denominations of church, Istarted to realise that all the stuff they weresaying from that ‘black book’ made a lot ofsense.

In fact, I thought that all the good thingsthe book said such as "do not steal", "do notkill another human being", etc, were so obvious that I thought it a bit redundant to attend church.

But, I continued to attend since, by virtueof my mother, I did not have much choicein the matter.

As time passed and I slept under thebenches at "crossnight" (overnight churchservices) and I noticed that every time thepreacher said these things, he promised thegrown ups and the other kids that we wouldgo to heaven if we did these good things asGod demanded.

This confused me quite a bit (existentialism can get very interesting for an adoles

cent).I mean, is it not obvious that we should

do unto others as we would like to be doneunto us?

Whythepromiseofblisstoaddtoit?Andwhy perpetuate the promise of being branded a child of Satan if I am naughty?

I have always kept a cynical view of religion for these reasons.

Anyway, when I first learned of atheism,I had this idea that atheists were devilworshipping freaks, despite my own skepticismabout God and religion.

How can you seriously be a good personwithout having God guide you?

Through pop culture that I had witnessed from my morethanfair share oftelevision, I saw good deeds from peoplewho did not acknowledge God in any of theirworks and trying this out myself I realisedhow much more pure it was to do good without the promise of heaven or prosperity.

Now, do not get me wrong, I am notgoodietwoshoes (this phrase always confused me), I have just been lucky enough tonot get in a lot of trouble (relatively speaking), but I think I have a good grasp of whatmakes a good person good.

So, how do you live without God? Howdo you dissuade your children from evil without sending them to Sunday school?

I think that you can be a good person byloving those close to you (and everyoneelse) and remembering to do to others whatyou wish to be done to you.

I don't think you need the Bible for that.

A MOST definite YES, based on my firsthand experience on the afternoon of 10 January.

I am a man in my early 40s and for thefirst time in my life I experienced unbearablechest pains that had me doubled over allof this within a space of an hour in the comfort of my lounge.

I asked my son to urgently drive me toStanger Hospital casualty, whilst ringing atthe back of my head were the followingwords, “Are you really going to Stanger Hospital? You do know that you are not goingback home once this is over right.” But thesevere pain quickly wiped away thesethoughts as I entered the Stanger Hospital.

At the entrance of the casualty ward Iwas met by a porter who immediately understood my circumstance and quickly assisted me out of the car, into a wheelchairand took me speedily into casualty wardwhilst I was bent over clutching at my chest.

This was when I met the people whobrought me back from the dead, Dr Jay Matthew and his team.

This team of six or seven people gatheredaround me and had me hooked up to different types of drips whilst Dr Matthew stayedat my side talking me through what washappening to me and what he and his team

were going to be doing. He also brought in humour trying to keep

me as calm as he possibly could.Although he was about to end his shift,

he promised that I need not worry and thathe will be at my side all the way and beyondhis normal shift.

It was 15 minutes later whilst they werebusy working on me that I went into cardiacarrest (flat lined).

This team with Dr Matthew’s guidancebrought me back and five minutes later I flatlined, again.

Eventually when I did come around DrMatthew was still at my side explainingwhat had happened and updating me on mycurrent status whilst verifying my responses.

He stabilised me and continued telephonic discussions with the senior cardiospecialist at Chief Albert Luthuli Hospitalwho advised on the medications that I further required and requested that I be forwarded to Luthuli at the soonest.

That same evening arrangements weremade to have me transported to Luthulihospital and Kenny and his team (our localparamedics) ensured that I was takenspeedily and safely to Luthuli hospital andduring the course of the journey ensured

that I was comfortable and as stable ascould be.

I was completely stabilised at Luthulihospital and am now a well recovering heartbypass patient.

In a nutshell and based on my personalexperience, using the governmental systemwas a first for me and will forever be a partof my memoryofexcellent servicewithdedicated, committed people who went beyondthe call of duty to ensure that I had a secondchance at life.

I am truly indebted, grateful and greatlyappreciative of this new lease on life thatI have been granted and more so to thesegreat people who assisted me all the waythrough.

My heart felt commendation (no punintended) to Dr Matthew and his team forbringing me back from the dead and keepingme alive. I now have a completely new perspective on life. I had the wonderful opportunity after my ordeal to personally thankall the individuals concerned and this wastruly a humbling experience for me.

Thank you and may your team growfrom strength to strength in dedicatingthemselves selflessly to the health needs ofour community. Great job Stanger Hospital!

Anon

Commendable, the Stanger Hospital?

I WAS mortified and greatly disillusioned having watched the fiasco thaterupted during the State of the Nation(SONA) on 12 February.

The disruption and disturbancefrom the EFF comes as no surprise tothe entire nation, but what was reallydisconcerting and totally disgracefulwas the tactless and boorish mannerin which the ruling party (ANC) handled the entire matter.

From the jamming of the transmission signals, to the SAPS being calledinto parliament chambers – this partyblundered their way through the SONAbeing completely undiplomatic and injudicious andcommitting agrossviolation of the constitution.

The very same constitution thatmany fought for, even to the point ofdeath, to ensure that it becomes thefoundation of our democracy.

A democracy that seems to bebrushed off and trampled upon by theANC.

SONA took us back to the days ofthe oppressive apartheid regime whenthe government of the day oppressedand controlled everything and tightlyheld the reins over what was broadcasted and what the people had access to.

The brute force that was used inthe removal of the EFF MPs was redolent of the apartheid security forces violently removing protestors in an effort to silence their cries for liberation.

The evasiveness of the speaker ofthe house in answering simple questions viz, “Was the SAPS called into thechambers?” was indicative of her bias

and incompetence in functioning as aneutral speaker of the house.

She, however, chose to act as thepresident’s personal bodyguard andspokesperson. It’s time to sanction anew competent speaker of the house.

FortoolongtheANChasbeengivencarte blanche in ruling this country, butno more.

It is time for truth and accountability. The ruling party has been enforcinglaws on others yet think of themselvesas above the law.

The reaction of President Jacob Zuma to the debacle that unravelled inparliament was completely improperand unbecoming for a leader of a nation.

Tomerelylaughoffamatterwithoutso much as some words of explanationto placate the situation or even anapology to the nation and the entireworld that was watching was unacceptable and very suggestive of the inept and unproficient leader that he is.It most certainly doesn’t augur well forhim as the leader of this nation.

I don’t foresee a favourable andprosperous future for our country if thisis the calibre of leadership that theANC is producing to rule in our land.

This ANCruled government needsto be more accountable and transparent to the citizens whom they serveand to stop hiding behind their bullyingtactics.

But then again honesty, accountability and truth are not qualities thatthey can identify with.

SONA has made it lucid and crystalclear that the ANC doesn’t have whatit takes to rule South Africa with wisdom, integrity, accountabilityandhonesty. So, ANC your time is up!

Over the years we have learnt that correct diagnosisof vehicle faults together with quality workmanship eliminates unnecessary costs.

Our progress:2005/6Our company’s base has now expanded. We increased our

staff compliment to support the increase in work load.2007The motor industry has advanced technologically at an as

tronomical rate. To remain competitive and abreast of thistechnology, Stanger Motor World has invested in "High Tech"equipment.

The introduction of diagnostic equipment has helped usdiagnose and repair faults much more efficiently, thus increasing our company’s service delivery capability. Environmentalstudies have shown that the carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere are increasing drastically. Management decided to introduce a modern "four gas analyser" to our existing array ofequipment. With this analyser, we can check and adjust exhaust gases to the required specifications, thus ensuring

Your presence will be highly appreciated

It seems like yesterday many memories in our mindssome we laugh, some we cry. The times we shared

and the laughter we had are things we miss, when wethink of you. You had a special way that warmed the

hearts of everyone who knew you.

Sadly missed by your Dad, Mum, Brother,Sister, and a host of family and friends.

In Loving Memoryof the late

RAKESH(DEO)DHANI

You told me you were coming home to me, and while waiting I fell into slumber.Dreaming you were standing at the front door, I awoke to news of horror, thatyou were gone.I couldn’t believe the love of my life would just leave me like that.It was impossible, I had to see for myself. There you lay, with a smile on your face, in deep sleep. It felt like this was one of your many pranks. But no my love, you truly had left me. Alone to face this world. How could yougo so soon.We had so much to do together. So many unfulfilled dreams and promises. All I can ask is Why?Family and friends gathered in their numbers to say goodbye.I still feel like this is all a bad dream, and that you will come back home to me.Your body may be gone as Ash to Ash, Dust to Dust, But your love lives herewithin my heart and will, forever. My days grow shorter, and my nights seem darker now.I breathe because of your love and will continue to do so, until we meet again.

Will the Proteasbloom or wither?>> Local coach says it’s South Africa’s time to shineWEEKLY REPORTER

WILL theProteasbloomin the2015 ICCCricketWorldCupor wither away in the quar-

Narendra Singh (a die-hard support-eroftheProteas)said:“It’stimefortheProteastobloom.It is timeSouthAfri-ca wipe out memories of previousWorld Cups and concentratesolely on the job at hand.

“I believe that the Pro-teas squad is a well bal-anced side that can go alltheway. Proven batsmenlike AB de Villiers andHashim Amla can pileon the runs and a solidplatform for the likes ofRilee Rossouw, Jean-PaulDuminy, David Miller, Fafdu Plessis, Quinton deKock and FarhaanBehardien to

“We have all thestars and in think it’sour time to shine, ‘KeNako’. I sincerelyhope that the Proteascan bloom and thistime come home as abunch of winners”.

So where will

theProteas fall short? Will theybeex-posed yet again in the quarter-finalsor semi-finalsof the ICCWorldCuporwill they finally overcome thehoodooin the knockout stages of the tourna-ment and go all the way to clinch thecoveted title that have eluded them?

When the quartet of young strokemakerQuintondeKock, Amla, ABdeVilliers, Faf du Plessis battle to keepthe score-board ticking, who canSouth Africa depend upon to takethemout of theirmisery? They lack agenuine world-class all rounder(gone are the days of LanceKlusener,Shaun Pollock and Jacques Kallis).

Yet, tournament favourites Aus-tralia boast a depth in batting whichinclude all-rounder James Faulknerand Glen Maxwell together with thebowling pedigree of Mitch Marsh.

They have justified their favourit-ism at the top of the leader-boards,having lost Warner (22), Watson (0),Smith (5) cheaply, but went on from70/3 in the 10th over to amass 342/9intheirallotted50-oversagainstEng-land on Saturday before going on tocrush their rivals by 111 runs in theopening fixtureof the2015ICCWorldCup.

In the dying minutes of the firsthalf, City’s central defender, thelanky Thabani Mthiyane was fortu-nate to get away with a yellow card(instead of a red one) after a robustchallenge on Makhathini.

Tigers came close to doublingtheir advantage barely minutes intothe 2nd half after Palouse Nale shotway over the crossbar with only theCity keeper to beat. Minutes later hehad an opportunity to redeem him-self, but this time the City keepermade a brilliant save, diving to hisleft to deny Nale.

Midway into the second half theCity keeper made yet another acro-batic save to deny Magubane. With

less than 20minutes remaining andholding onto a slender 1-0 lead, Ti-gersbroughton13-year-oldSidudu-zo Langeni for striker MpumeleliMkhwanazi.

Five minutes later Langenishouldhavesealedthefateoftheirri-vals after receiving a precision-timed cross from Magubane on theright flank. In the dying minutes of
