The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, was told she was “possessed by demons” and needed to have cleansing rituals performed when she contacted the man, whom she knew only as “Shanker”, to complain about feel- ing unwell. He also allegedly told her that her family's gold jewellery was cursed and that she should hand it over to him. When she did so, he disappeared. She took out R40 000 in bank loans and handed over R60 000 of family gold. She said she feels “humiliated and hurt” by the experience. “It was stupid to think he was help- ing me but I was desperate,” she said. “I am now totally broke and he has my family’s gold.” She said she has a leaflet adver- tising the services of the “priest” from a local newspaper in June. She said she had been feeling unwell for a few weeks and had been to see her doctor, who was un- able to diagnose an illness. She said despite being hesitant she called the number on the advert in search of advice. “A man calling himself Shanker said I should come and meet him at an outbuilding in Stanger Manor and he would try to find out what was wrong,” she said. “He said I had demons inside me and asked for R3 000 to perform a ritual with fire. “It was very strange, I felt like I was almost under a spell. “He said for R10 000 he would be able to remove the bad energy, so I took out a loan. But I started to feel worse. “He said to wait nine days and come back and when I did he said he needed R25 000 so someone in India could also perform a ritual. “I just wanted the problem solved and to feel better again, so I took out another loan. “Again he said to wait nine days and on the ninth day I started to feel like myself again.” The priest then told her the gold jewellery she was wearing had been cursed with black magic. Last month, he asked her to collect all the gold in her house and take it to him, so he could “cleanse” it. She said: “I took it to him and he said to wait outside for an hour while he performed another ritual. “I had been outside for more than an hour so I went into the house and he was gone. I felt so stu- pid and realised what he had done." Another victim, from Stanger Manor, said she believed someone had bewitched her because of marks that appeared on her body. The woman saw the same advert and contacted a man, again named Shanker. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

ACTING MEC for TransportCommunitySafetyandLiaisonDr Sibongiseni Dhlomo con-
demned the disruptions of taxioperations at the KwaDukuza taxirank by illegal taxi operators, sayinglawlessness will not be tolerated.
Dhlomo’s comment comes in thewake of disruption allegedly by agroup of illegal operators affiliated tothe Maphumulo Taxi Association,whoinvadedthetaxirankandthreat-ened to take over operations.
The incident took place last Mon-day at the KwaDukuza taxi rank, where the KwaDukuza and Maphu-mulo taxi associations operate.
After receiving disturbance re-ports,Dhlomocalledanurgentmeet-ing with the leadership of
sociation’s leaders distanced them-selves from the disruptions and con-demned the incident.
Itemergedthatdisgruntledopera-tors are mobilising illegal operatorsto forcefully operate and invade taxiranks to cause instability.
Dhlomo expressed concerns thatcommuters were affected and couldnotaccess the long-distancetaxirankin KwaDukuza as a result of theseacts.
“We oppose any form of disrup-tions in the taxi industry, mainly be-cause commuters then become thevictims. We convened this meetingwiththeassociationtoensurethatop-erations return to normal and toavoid escalation into violence.”
He said the Department of Trans-
port is also opposed to illegal opera-tors invading the industry becausethis results in conflict and violence.
Themeeting resolved that law en-forcement agencies will be deployedto monitor the situation and thatSouth African National Taxi Councilshouldfacilitate theprocessofengag-ing legal operators underMaphumu-lowhoareworkingwithillegalopera-tors in a bid to achieve unity and sta-bility.
Dhlomo condemned the violentbehaviour bymembers of KwaDuku-za.
“Thiswillnotbeaccepted.Wecan-not succeed in stabilising the situa-tion if people think itworksasan ‘eyefor an eye’. We call on both associa-tions to remain calm and follow theproper channels to achieve abalancein the local industry.”

RESIDENTS say taxis are a“law unto themselves” and“authorities turn a blind eye”.
Ballito resident Karen Lategansaid the temporary taxi rank next tothe Sangweni tourism centre is apoor advert for the town.
She said she has noticed peoplesetting upmake-shift food stalls andhair salons, lighting fires and carry-ing automatic weapons at the taxirank, which is “illegal andunaccept-able”.
“The rank is a disgrace. It is attheentrancetoBallito, andrightnextto the tourism centre, which is terri-ble for Ballito as a tourism-driventown,” said Lategan. She said thetaxi security guards carrying weap-ons are also disconcerting, and an“accident waiting to happen”.
“I’ve been told they are affiliatedto the police, but it sets the wrongtone in any case.Amanwaskilled ina shoot out last year. Who is to say itwill not happen again?” said Late-gan.
She added whenever other peo-ple attempt similar activities, theyare immediately shut down.
“My son had a fire on the beach, whichwas safely enclosed, and theywere shut down within a few min-utes. But no one does anythingwhentherearefiresat thetaxirank.”
Lategan said when she ap-proached authorities on the matter,
she was told taxi operators andthose frequenting the rank were“authorised”.
Ward 6 councillor Colin Marshagreed the rank was “out of hand”.
“The taxi problem has plaguedBallito formuch too longand it isdis-couraging to business investment.Something needs to be done.
“There can’t be one set of rulesfor some, and different ones for oth-ers,” said Marsh. “The mayor alsopromisedtoiletsattherank. This hasnotbeen fulfilled.A permanent rankalso needs to be built,” he added.
Dolphin Coast Taxi Association’sDan Maharaj said the food and oth-er stalls had nothing to do with thetaxi operators. “We are running atransport service. The vendors havecomeinoftheirownaccord,”hesaid.
Another member said the asso-ciationhadmetwith themunicipali-ty about the issues three weeks ago,butnothinghadbeendone.“Themu-
year that land near the Shell garagewas earmarked for a permanentpublic transport facility. Inacouncilreport, KDM acting executive direc-tor of technical services SiyabongaKhanyile said the municipality hasan ‘in principle commitment’ fromShell SouthAfricaandprivate sectorgroup IAM Rental Collector (IRC).
The report states Shell will sell
the land to IRC,whowill thendonateabout 5000m2 to the municipality..“As soon as the two parties con-cerned reach an agreement on thetransaction, KDM and IRC will fina-lise the donation agreement,” saidKhanyile.
The municipality had not com-mented on issues at the temporaryrank at the time of going to press.
Residents are ‘fed up’ with the temporary rank in the centre of town.

Author launches book at Luthuli Museum>> Title of the book, The Goodwill Lounge, refers to the first multiracial restaurant that opened in Durban in 1926
JYOTHI LALDAS
WELL-KNOWN author, for-mer journalist and beautypageant organiser Farook
Khan chose to launch his book TheGoodwill Lounge at the LuthuliMuseum last week because of thespecial connection between the
subject and Africa’s first NobelPeace prize winner Chief AlbertLuthuli.
The title of the book, The Good-will Lounge, refers to the first mul-tiracial restaurant that opened inDurban in 1926, which was firstcalled “Peter’s Lounge” and thenlater changed to “The Goodwill
Lomberg.Khan said that the people who
went there all played a part inhelping to bring about change inthe country.
“The book brings alive the char-acters who created legends, someof which are very much alive in ourhearts and minds — men andwomen who used the performingarts, sticks and stones to confrontone of the most sophisticated de-fence forces in Africa – all in thename of liberation,” he said.
At the launch, residents ofGroutville, some of whom also fre-quented the lounge, interacted withKhan asking questions.
A limited number of the book isavailable for sale at the museum.
Anyone interested in purchasinga copy can contact marketing man-ager Heidi Gibson on 032 559 6822or e-mail marketing@luthulimuse-um. org.za.

started by the Naidoofamily – Sreenivasalooand his bride Venkatta-mah - who came toDurban in 1894 fromIndia.
It was situated in theheart of an area of Dur-ban called “the Cas-bah”.

Bright women in business>> Top female leader recounts the changing face of women in theworkplace over the past 30 years
SHANNON HOPKINS
THE Women in BusinessForum selected its steeringcommittee last Wednesday.
Executive committee repre-sentative Jane Wiltshire took thefloor first, addressing the audi-ence on the role of the forum formodern women. Wiltshire is arole model for women in busi-ness, having been a teacher, clerk, metallurgical chemist, cor-porate executive for a large com-pany, and an entrepreneur whostarted and successfully runs sev-eral companies. She has also beena corporate financier.
She is currently adding to thelist and launched into the mar-ket of assessing the valuations ofunlisted companies.
She has a BSc, teaching diplo-ma, MBA and is completing herdoctorate in corporate finance onthe topic of “valuation of unlistedcompanies”.
Wiltshire is passionate aboutsaving rhinos from extinction,
saving the top soil of South Africa, and developing entrepreneurs.
She has served as the chiefjudge in the Entrepreneurs com-petition for the past three yearsand is a member of the executivecommittee of the iLembe Chamber.
She explains that while lotshas changed for women in busi-ness over the years, the forum wasstill a necessary means of sup-port.
“As a married female teacher,I was paid 25% less than themen. I was not allowed on themedical aid, I was not allowed onthe pension fund and I was notallowed to get a housing loan.
“I was also on 24 hours’notice. I was required to do the
work of head of department, butwas not allowed to be appointedto the position. “Even when I wasthe most senior woman executivein the Tongaat- Hulett Group, Iwas not allowed to belong tothe medical aid because I wasmarried.”
She added that things havechanged and South Africa hasone of the most liberal constitu-tions in the world, replying towhether a Women in Business Fo-rum is needed.
“MEC of Economic Affairs
Mike Mabuyakhulu had a goal for50% representation of women onboards in KwaZulu-Natal by 2005.
“He pointed out that he wasvery unhappy that we had fallenso badly short of this. Partly, itis our own fault as women.
“It is easier to retreat into our‘cocoon of comfort’ rather thanpush ourselves out there and takeon the challenges which thatmeans.
“It’s a scary place for us com-peting with all comers.
“But we should know that it is
not purely a woman’s issue, mentoo are scared.
“However, many of them pushthemselves upwards anyway. Weneed to ask ourselves how muchof the ‘glass ceiling’ is constructedby us as women,” said Wiltshire.
“I would like to challenge theiLembe Chamber Women inBusiness Forum to make a differ-ence to the economy and thelives of women in this area, andchoose a big, hairy, audaciousgoal (Bhag) in trying to changesome of these issues,” she said.

WEEKLY
DEAR Thuthukile Zuma,
I hope this letter finds you well, and that you are settling comfortablyinto your position of chief-of-staff inthe Ministry of Telecommunicationsand Postal Services.
Imust say,by way of introduction, that both your story and your photo-graph remind me of an old adage. The apple, they say, doesn’t fall far
from the tree, and you have bothyour dad’s dashing good looks andwhat increasingly seems like hissavvy ability to use any given situa-tion to his advantage.
Beingamemberof theZumafami-ly must be tough at times.
You hardly ever get to see your be-loveddad,andwhen you find asweetnew job, the first thing people do isquestion your ability because of yoursurname.
It surprises me that your degreein anthropology convinced Siyabon-ga Cele that you were a suitable in-cumbent for the position with whichyou have been blessed.
Also, I notice that the five to tenyears of experience that applicantsfor such positions are generally ex-pected to have did not apply to you.
However, with that said, PublicService and Administration MinisterCollins Chabane has assured us thatyour appointment has everything todowith your abilities, and nothing todo with your lineage.
Given the calibre of public serviceadministered to the average SouthAfrican, nobody should feel inclinedto doubt what Chabane has to say –no, not at all.
A position like yours did not need
to be advertised, no matter whatthoseguysoverattheMailandGuard-ian say.
Why waste good money advertis-ing a position, when Our EsteemedPresident was perhaps able to pointChabane in the direction of theperfect candidate?
Who needs an understanding oftechnology, a grasp of human re-sourcesissuesoranunderstandingofthe technologies which allow com-munication, when you have anthro-pology?
Remember, Thuthukile, new jobscan be overwhelming, and you mayhave some days when you feel thatyou’re just not coping.
When that happens, just remem-ber that no South African really ex-pects the post office to be competent.
Ever. They have insurance on any and
every item which they place in yourcare, so don’t you worry about athing, pretty lady.
While I’mwriting toyou, I’d love toask you a couple of questions aboutyour dad’s house, as I presume thattaxpayers such as myself (and your-self of course) must be paying foryou to travel there for a weekendevery so often.
Your dad would never allow youto work very hard without having abreak – he’d be worried about you
going…postal. As was well documented in the
media over the past year or so, thenew and improved Nkandla offersyou, your sisters, your mother andyour step-mothers protection fromrapists, robbers and the dregs ofSouth African society.
What is it like to feel safe?Is the firepool really worth themil-
lions that it supposedly cost? Finally, I wish to congratulate you
on jumping so early and so success-fully into the role of a high-poweredcivil servant.
As your dad will tell you, anHonours degree is infinitely morethan you will ever need to succeed, even in the highest office of our land.
Where to from tele-communica-tions, Thuts?
I’d love to hear back from you.I’d ask you to email me, but given

Letter
AFTER reading Ms Naidoo’s letter in last week’s pa-per, I suspect there are gaps in her educationregarding science, history and Theology.
Catholic priest Georges LeMaitre was the first topropose the Big Bang in 1927.Since then the Vatican and most European main-stream Christian churches seem to have acceptedthis as the Beginning.
Alfred Wallace was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist – acontemporary of Charles Darwin who came tosimilar conclusions at the same time.Darwin got all of the glory for his “Theory of Evolu-tion”, however. Neither of these scientists seemedto have a racist agenda and since their discoveryevolution is accepted as a fact (just as the earth isround and orbits the sun) again by the Vatican andmainstream churches.
History shows that Darwin was distressed bythe fact that evolution conflicted with some of hisbeliefs; he was after all a Church of England curateand I suspect there was much friction with hisdevout wife over the subject. On the subject of allreligions believing in an almighty God, I recommendMs Naidoo study some Eastern belief systems likeBuddhism and Taoism which do not have theAbrahamic concept of a supreme being.
Further reading will reveal that Greek philoso-phers mention the idea of evolution around 2500years ago. Although slavery was established inGreece and most other states at the time thereseems to be no racial agenda behind these discus-sions.
If Ms Naidoo wants evidence of racism andslavery she will find plenty of examples in the Bibleand the Koran. Many slavers justified their way oflife by quoting scriptures. Secular thinkers likeThomas Paine opened the eyes of Western societyto the cruelties of this culture. Unfortunately thishas yet to happen in Islamic states.

INVITATION TO THE RESIDENTS OF KWADUKUZA TO THE PALESTINIAN SOLIDARITY MARCH
Fellow residents of KwaDukuza
We greet you in the name of KwaDukuza Municipal Council, the Stanger Muslim Association and the progressive forces who are struggling for the creation of a betterworld.
The situation in the Gaza Strip is such that none of us can ignore it. Since the outbreak of that crisis our government has expressed serious concern at the escalatingnumber of casualties many of whom are women, children and the infirm. To this end the South African government has appealed for calm and a speedy ceasefire aswell as the opening of a humanitarian corridor to enable aid to get through to the needy.
Since the advent of our democracy, which we attained with the support of the international solidarity campaign against apartheid, among others, our government hasbeen engaged in the call for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestine question. In engaging in this call government has maintained the principled position of a two-state solution with an economically viable Palestinian State existing side by side and in peace with Israel, within mutually agreed and internationally recognised bordersbased on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The reason for my correspondence is to appeal to you to join millions across the globe who are raising their voices against the atrocities that are perpetrated against thevulnerable people in both territories resulting from continued rocket attacks. As South African citizens we know too well how international solidarity helped us achieveour hard won freedom.
It is against this background that we invite you to join the Palestinian Solidarity March which will be organized as follows:
DATE : FRIDAY, 8TH AUGUST 2014TIME : 13H00VENUE : RECREATION GROUNDS
Marchers will march through the streets of the town and proceed to the Municipal gardens where a memorandum will be handed for onward transmission to the pro-vincial and national spheres of government.
As Tata Madiba once said, “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians”Your participation in this solidarity campaign, in the quest for an equitable, just and humane world order will be appreciated.Yours in human solidarity

Child’s miracle survival>> North Coast business woman tells of her daughter’s struggle with a cyst on her brain
WHENKerryRitsonbecameamother she had no ideawhat shewas lettingherself
in for.Doctors told Ritson her daughter
Kiera-nowfive-hadsufferedastrokein the womb, and as a result had aporencephalic cyst one her brain, which caused hydrocephalus and re-sultedin70%oftherightbrainnotde-veloping.
However, after numerous surger-ies, the last and biggest of whichwasin May last year, Kiera is a cheeky, bouncy, beautiful little girl today.
“I am so grateful Kiera that hasbeenblessedwitha relativelynormallifeafterallshehasbeenthrough.Theleft side of her body is weaker, al-though it is not easily noticeable. With lots of therapy, we are hopefulshe will get better and better,” saidRitson.
Ritson said motherhood has notbeen easy.
At the latter stage of her pregnan-cy, shewent for a scanwhere shewastold of Kiera’s problem. Shewas alsotold that she had to “have her” rightaway.
Thereafter Kiera had to have MRIscans every threemonths to check tosee if the cyst was growing. It waswhen shewas about ninemonths oldthat she got really sick.
“Kierawas a happy baby, but sud-denly she started crying a lot andvomiting. Doctors told us she wasfine, but I didn’t believe it.We got an-other opinion and the doctor told usshe required surgery immediately as
the cyst was producing toomuch flu-id, creating enormous pressure onher brain,” said Ritson.
Ritson and her husband Brad, aformer professional soccer player, were told if Kiera was fine in sixweeks, theywere in the clear. But justbefore this milestone, she becamereally uncomfortable again followinga cold.
Although doctors said it was dan-gerous togivegeneral anaesthetic foranMRI to a sick child, her discomfortwas so bad they were forced to. Thepressure on her brain was terrific, andagainshehadtohaveemergencysurgery.
Shehadsomuchfluidonherbrainthat the remaining left side waspressed into almost a third of hercranium.
On her first birthday Kiera had tohave a shunt placed in her brain todrain the fluid into her abdomenwhere the body would re-absorb it.
At six months it became apparentKeirahadhemiplegia, a formof cere-bralpalsy,andat18monthsshestart-ed having epileptic fits. The seizurescould last as long as 30 or 40minutesand the familywere inandoutofhos-pitals with Keira every couple ofweeks.
“Doctors told us later that shewasin fact having continuous fits due tothecyst.Aftergoing fromspecialist tospecialist, who all told us differentthings, a neurologist told us about DrJamesButlerandDrRogerMelvilleatConstantiaberg Mediclinic, special-ists in epilepsy, who could performvarious surgeries to remove seizure-
trigger factors and stop the fits.“I cannot tell you how amazing
these two doctors are and how ad-vanced their knowledge is.We foundout they are among the best in theworld in their fields, and would likeotherparents inoursituationtoknowabout them,” said Ritson.
InthemeantimeKierahadbeenona strict Ketogenic diet, monitored byDr Tuschka Reynders, which cut outsugar and other substances thatcause fits and Keira hasnothadase-rious seizure for a year.
Ritson, who had sold her pavingbusinesstolookafterherchild,pains-takingly prepared Kiera’s gram-by-grammeals and gavehermedicationfourtimesaday.Bradalsogaveuphissoccer career, which tookhimawaya
lot, to be near his family.Dr Butler advised them Kiera
needed a right functional hemi-spherectomyandwereadvisedof thebenefits and risks of the surgery, butdue toKeira’spoorqualityof life, theydecided to go ahead.
She was in theatre from 8am tonearly 4pm.
After a harrowing day, Ritson andBrad found Keira stable and able tomove normally, although it was twomonths before the swelling wentdown and Keira was no longer inpain.
“After surgery Keira didn’t wantanyone who looked like a doctor ornurse near her – I was the only oneshe’d let get close. She still gets con-cerned when told people are sick, so
she has been traumatised by her or-deal,” said Ritson.
Ritson said she didn’t realise howstressed she herself was until Keirawas better.
“Youareemotionalallthetime, butsomehow you just cope because youdon’thaveanalternative.Wealsohadamazingsupport fromour familyandfriends, and worked hard at keepingour relationship strong.
“Butnowwe’reaveryhappy fami-ly with a huge success story.”
Keira is now at Rainbow Roo pre-school and, with the help of physioand speech therapists, her cognitiveability is fast catchingup toherpeers.
