Meet Brigadier Bheki Zondi>> New KwaDukuza station commander promises big changes
MAKHOSANDILE ZULU
ASEASONED station com-mander with 14 years experi-ence at the helm, Brigadier
BhekiZondisaidthattheKwaDukuzapolice force has “capable” and “opti-mistic” members within its ranks.
He said that the co-operative rela-tionship he has established with thegeneral public will ensure that crimeis brought down in the area.
Brigadier Zondi officially took overasstationcommanderatKwaDukuzaSAPS on 1March after a short periodas acting station commander aftercontroversial former commanderBrigadierBongiweSitholewas trans-ferred.
His first appointment as a stationcommander came in 2001 at the Bel-lairpolicestationinDurbanwhereheserved for four years.
In 2004 he was assigned as headof the Hillcrest SAPS where he spentsix years.
Thereafter, he was transferred toUmhlanga where he spent anotherfour years before moving to KwaD-ukuza.
“When the previous station com-mander [Sithole] was made clustercommander in Pinetown Iwas askedbymanagement to fill this post on anacting basis,” he said.
He added that once the post waseventually advertised he applied likeall other eligible candidates, andon1March this year he was officially in-stated as the station commander.
According to Zondi, “A lot still hasto be done in KwaDukuza. Since myarrival there is a lot of problems thathas been identified.”
One of those is murder which is amajor concern for him.
“Other crimes are also a concern, crimes like car hijacking and housebreak-ins,” he said.
Backed by a teamcomprising “ca-pable” and upbeat individuals, thebrigadier is hopeful that they willemerge victorious in the war againstcrime.
“I’m not working alone, I workwith a team and we have strategiesthat we are going to implement,” hesaid.
One of those strategies was set inmotion when the KwaDukuza policevisited local communities.
“We have been out to address thecommunity,” he said.
Theiraimistourgemembersofthepublic to refrain from taking the lawinto their own hands.
For the brigadier this is the mostimportant strategy as it will createclear channels of communication be-
Zondisaidthat theareasthepolicevisitedareNtshawini, Thembeni andLot 14 in Glenhills.
“There are many more places westill have to visit. Wewant to have anequalpartnershipwiththecommuni-ty,” said the brigadier who believesthat the police stand a better chanceat reducing crime if they work handin hand with the public.
Speaking to the Weekly, ClusterCommander Brigadier Derek Cap-tain-Hastibeer said he is looking for-ward to the changes that will comeabout with Zondi at the helm of
KwaDukuza SAPS.“We have been facing ongoing
challenges for a long time and I amquite sure Brigadier Zondi will makea difference in this community.
“Previously the KwaDukuza SAPSwasneglectedand therewasaseverelack of motivation, but I am positivegoing forward we will see a change.
“The community will be happy toknowwenowhaveaworker steeringtheKwaDukuzaSAPSship,”saidCap-tain-Hastibeer

IN this post-modern age it is unor-thodox to believe in astrology.
To believe that such seeminglyarbitrary planetary movementscould manifest in our daily lives, inour beings, seems crazy.
Poet Rudy Fransisco starts off oneof his poems (My honest poem) with"I was born on July 27, I guess thatmakesme a Leo, I have no idea whatthat actually means..."
At that declaration audiences arebeckoned to join in the chuckle re-gardingastrologyasofnoreal impor-tance in one’s identity.
In another comment pop singerPink! says, "Hi I'm Pink! I'm a Virgoand I'mgay. I'mactuallynotbut Iwashoping that 'I'm gay' would have thesame (non) effect as 'I'm a Virgo'".
Without reducing the statement'spolitical importance I would like topoint out again how astrology isdeemed irrelevant.
I amaGemini - the twin sign. ThisshouldmeanIamtwopersons inone,a multifaceted character who canshift and change as the weather orrather, the very day itself.
"Impossible to pigeon hole, she(the Gemini woman) is a will-o-wisp,a changeling, amix of intriguing per-sonalities. One minute demure anddoting, the next ruthlessly sarcastic.
“Gemini can turn from MadameJekyll, dottingherI'sandcrossingherT's with impeccable manners, to MsHyde, wild andunpredictable, but noless fascinating..." reads a descrip-tionbyAnnieHeeseandAdamBanksof Café Astrology.
“The study of astrology examinesthemovementsofdistantcosmicmat-ter that is the stars, planets andmoons and their relation to humanlives.
“This is done by correlating thesemovements with the particular timethat a person is born.
“The information gathered is be-lieved to "shape the person's person-ality, affect their romantic relation-
ships and predict their economic for-tunes, among other divinations”explains astrologer Ed Grabinowski.
Studies are categorised in differ-ent forms and categorised accordingto theiroutcomearemundaneastrol-ogy,interrogatoryastrologyandnatalastrology.
Well, think of it thisway - after ob-serving certain events in daily life forawhile, the first star gazers noticed acorrelationbetweentheseeventsandthe movements of the planets.
Imaybetryingtojustifyaseeming-ly religious inclination here, but ar-en'tallhypothesisscientificallyinves-tigated via the collection of empiricalevidence to either confirm or refutethem.
Now the apparatus used in astrol-ogy may be physically unverifiablebuthey, science inthisenlightenmentage has evolved to such.
Anyway I'mabeliever. And for themost part my horoscope predictionsturn out pretty accurate.
But it is because I believe in it, youargue even after having read thiswhole piece.
I will only add that yes, in fact I amabeliever. I amafearfulbeliever inallthings.
So if nothing else this piece is a re-flection of my appreciation of thosesecret writings in the sky where theLord also sits.
IwillendoffwithaquotefromSim-phiweDana's ‘Howtocomeoutof lifealive’: "We are the manifestation ofGod.Likethesandparticlesthatmakethe beach, unique in shape, but thesame in form and fitting like a puzzleto show the whole picture.
“Do you see the bigger picture? Itis beautiful."

The reality of the situation is thatcrime has reached crisis propor-tions.
If one opens a newspaper orlooks at newson television, crime isdominating the news. We can't sayjournalists are just manufacturingthestories.Crimedoesnothaveanyboundaries and it affects us all.

THE IFP calls on all South Africansto fight crime in the same mannerthey fought apartheid after a videofootage showing twomenaccostingSABC crew.
Theparty further calls on thepo-lice to urgently arrest the criminalsinvolved.
Thebattleagainstcrime isa fightthatwemustfightwiththesamevig-our our forefathers used todisman-tle the pillars of apartheid.
I believe we need much harsherpunishment for criminals in thiscountry.
We want those who have com-mittedcrimestobeputfirmlywherethey cannot hurt the society again.
Most people who are accused ofsuch crimes are repeat offendersand the criminal justice system has
not done a good job of putting themost violent criminals behindbars.
To be frank about this, I don’tthink it is fair to continue to ask thepolice togoafter thesameguysoverand over again and put themselvesindangerous situationswhen theseoffences are plead away or dis-missed in the courts.
If we do not support the initia-tives to reform the system, the ver-dict could only be: guilty of wasteand injustice.
Nobody is a criminal from birth. It is theenvironment inwhichhe
growsup thatmakeshimacriminalor a respected man.
Some people turn into criminalsdue to poverty as they are not ableto nourish their families.
Criminals needs punishment,
Let’s fight crime like wefought apartheid
but first one mustlook into the reasonfor the crime andthen punish the cul-prit.
The IFP furtherurgesgovernmenttoconduct a series ofhearings on the rootcauses of crime andto conduct a com-prehensive reviewof all national socialprogrammes, invit-ing the director ofeach programme topresent the evalua-tion data on the pro-gramme’s effective-ness (or lack of it) inreducing crime.

9WHETHER crime is on the increase or decrease and presumably under control doesnot give our South African community anysense of comfort.
I see no point in finding excuses or researching the cause associated with crimewhether it is due to the high rate of unemployment, socioeconomic conditions orplain greed. Brutal crime is now a realitywhich is experienced throughout the country in places such as commercial, industrialand residential areas.
It is a mammoth task to curb, eradicateor control crime at the moment unless factors such as strengthening our border controls, corruption and strict laws are appliedin the issuing of firearm licences. These areto be addressed on an ongoing basis. I amof the opinion that most of the highly sophisticated weapons are acquired at a pittance from our neighbouring countries andbrought into our country.
Speak to some of the people who comefrom outside the country such as from Mozambique or Zimbabwe and they will tellyou that you do not require a passport to getin and out of SA because there are lots oftaxis which use side roads to bypass the SAborders posts which taxis operate on a regular basis.
Brazen criminals are now parading ourcities, towns and residential suburbs withhighly sophisticated weapons. I do not believe that most of our SAPS officers who areon patrol are suitably equipped to match
these perpetrators of crime. In some situations the SAPS officers may
need to call for backup which may come intoo late.
Brazen criminals appear to be wellplanned and organised operating mainly ingangs.
They already have their back up on thescene. No matter how good or brave our police officer is it would prove foolish for him/her to place their life on the line. Experiencedcriminals with their sophisticated fire powerare fully aware of the police’s shortcomingsand that is why many of them get away.
These are merely a reflection of mythoughts which I believe you are aware of,or have heard many times before.
Locally and especially in our suburbs wehave recently experienced severe brutalcrime inflicted by armed criminals/gangs.
Armed perpetrators of crime have no racial divide. Whilst certain parties have beentargeted for reasons unknown, criminals arealso concentrating on residential propertiesfor personal gain.
In the process extreme force is used causing injury, perhaps loss of life, are being inflicted on our community robbing them oftheir hard earned possessions.
Hijacking and robberies are being experienced regularly mainly during the daytimewhen most of the people are at work or goneshopping.
Elderly people and domestic help are often left at the mercy of criminals. One would
consider this happening generally as criminals attacking/taking advantage of softtargets.
My concern is that if this trend continuesthere will come a time when the communitywill become unruly and feel that enough isenough and retaliate.
Vigilantism will come into force andthere may be severe repercussions.
People will become suspicious of one another. Anyone unknown in the vicinity willbe viewed as a criminal. Law and orderwould become null and void. Innocent people will become victims in the process. Jobseekers will not be entertained.
Most property owners have made a sacrifice in engaging the service of private security companies at a high premium to protecttheir family and possessions.
These companies are presently doing agood job however their scope is limited. I realise that our SAPS have severe personneland financial constraints and are not ableto be zone patrolling everywhere at thesame time trying to protect the community.
I would suggest that a strongly motivated appeal be made to the relative SAPS department to consider setting up a satellitepolice station in Stanger Manor with a number of officers on duty.
This would perhaps act as a deterrent towould be criminals and also provide someform of comfort to the community.
Concerned resident
Can we have a satellite policestation in Stanger Manor?
THOUSANDS of locals and holi-daymakersvisit theWildCoast ca-sino regularly and until newman-agement took over, it was alwaysa worthwhile venture. Slot ma-chines usually paid out approxi-mately 26% but lately payouts arelimited to about five percent.

WEEKLY REPORTER
ROCKY Park United and NandiShooting Stars shared the spoils(11) in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local
Football Association Premier League(stream two) stalemate played at theRecreation Ground on Saturday.
Log leaders United, boasting sevenwins and a solitary loss since the start ofthe 2014/2015 season arrived at the Recreation Ground in high spirits, anticipating to bag all three points against thefourthplaced Stars outfit in the hope ofextending their lead at the summit of thelog table.
But, they were in for a rude awakening
after a dismal performance and were fortunate to return home with a point. TheNtshawinibased Stars outfit squandered a golden opportunity of breakingthe deadlock as early as the fifth minuteafter Samkelo Maphumulo was involvedin a oneonone with the United keeper, but he fluffed his shot, kicking wide.
Ten minutes later Bongani Xulu beatthe United central defender with ease, but blasted the ball over the crossbar.Midway into the first half, the United twinstrikers, Rishel and Rishal Singh wreakedhavocupfront, butfailedtobeattheStarskeeper, Cebo Mthethwa who made somebrilliant saves.
In the 25th minute, Tyrell Canary play

Early in the second half, SiyabongaKhuzwayo latched onto a cross from Xulu, but headed the ball over the bar.
On the stroke of the hour mark, Unitedwereawardedafreekickfromjustoutsidethe box after a horrendous tackle by ZayaMthembu. Riaz William’s brilliantly executed curling free kick beat the keeperand went into the top left hand corner ofthe net to give United a 10 lead.

With less than 10 minutes remainingStarswereawarded afree kick just metresoutside the box. Muh Khathi’s freekickwas a replica of Williams, beating theUnited keeper Thobelani Mthembu tosnatch a vital equaliser (11).
Minutes later Khuzwayo could havesealed all three points for Stars. He received a perfect through ball from Khathi, but instead of shooting at goal, he passedthe ball to the far right flank.
With less than three minutes remaining Stars hero, Khathi received a secondyellow card after a reckless challenge andreferee Thabo Pheko had no choice butto flash the red card and give Khathimarching orders.
