WITH millions of South Africans unable topay their monthly financial obligationsmany people are looking at options to re-duce their payments.
Manyof thesepeopleare taking thewisechoice of entering the debit reviewprocessand saving thousands of rands in repay-ments eachmonth. Some of the most com-mon questions are:
How quickly can you help me?As soon as you submit your application
form to a registered debt counsellor theyregister you with the NCR and provide youwithimmediateprotectionforaperiodof60days while they negotiate with your credit-ors.
How much do I pay each month? This will depend on your individual cir-
cumstances, but in most cases payments
are reduced by up to 50% of your existinginstallments.
Will debt review save me money?Your debt counsellor is able to negotiate
lower installments, interest rates andmonthly fees meaning you pay less overalland get you back on the road to financialfreedom.
Will I lose my assets while under debtreview?
No.while you are under the debt reviewprocessyouareprotected fromyourcredit-ors as long as you continue to pay the re-duced installment.

Disappointed by attitude ofcommunity leaders inShakaskraalI AM writing this letter because I believethat the community of Shakaskraalneeds to be made aware of what is happening in our town.
As a local GP, I have found that drugaddiction is a big problem in the community.
Many lives are being lost, many families are being destroyed although they arein a situation that I believe is salvageable.
I took the initiative to contact a worldacclaimed addiction specialist, who isexperienced when it comes to the treatment of addicts as well as educatingtheir families, in order to set up a drugawareness talk that would assist bothyoung people and parents who arecurrently faced with drugrelated problems.
I started in October 2014, trying to secure a venue, where he could talk to the
kraal Primary School. This seemed liked the ideal location as
it is just a stone’s throw from Nkabongo, and people can easily walk there to listento the talk and get the help and assistance they require.
The intention of hosting the drugawareness talk was not only to provideinformation, but also to form supportgroups for families affected by addictionand addicts themselves.
However, when I approachedShakaskraal Primary to make arrangements to hire their hall I encountered numerous challenges.
I experienced extreme disappointment and frustration due to the attitudeof people who appear to have the monopoly on what goes on in town.
I was first told that I must apply inwriting, which I did, but to date I have notreceived a reply.
Then I was told, by Mr Anthony Singh(previous chairperson of governing body)that the hall was booked and if I applyfor another date that the hall would bebooked on that date as well.
This is clearly abuse of his authority.During the phone call, he seemed to havemore political motives at heart, ratherthan community upliftment.
Community members will agree thatthis community needs all the help andsupport it can get to curb the drugrelated
problems within this community. It is sad and disappointing that there
would be such opposition and very littlecooperation from people who shouldhave this community’s best interests aspriority.
After chatting to Singh I begin towonder if political agendas are actuallyholding back this entire community.
It is unfair, that in a community thatneeds so much upliftment, certain“kingpins” are acting in their owninterest to prevent good things from taking place.
It is also not right that the school’sgoverning body is being turned into a political battlefield by its chairperson. Itneeds to be acknowledged that drug addiction is rife in this town.
I cannot sit back and watch things goon the way they are.
If no one acts about the situation inour town, things may even get worse andthe state of Shakaskraal can deteriorateto such an extent that we may have tocontend with gangs, gangrelated violence and drugassociated crime.
Community leaders should actuallysupport initiatives like this drug awarenesscampaign, whichwillultimatelylendsupport to drug addicts as well as theirfamilies.
Instead, I have found the currentcommunity leaders acting in such a wayso as to shut down any communityinitiative which will threaten theirpolitical agenda, and this is very disappointing.
The drug awareness campaign willcontinue, irrespective of the current resistance that is experience.

COMMUNITIES are urged to attendall public meetings scheduled byiLembe and KwaDukuzaMunicipali-ties.
More than 2490 petition weresigned and acknowledged by iLembeagainst the rise in tariffs.
Overall increase in the currentbudget2014/2015was10%plus costreflective tariff of 17%.
Therefore, the total increase was27%.
Added to that for the first timewasa 70% sewer tariff based on waterconsumption plus a R120 basiccharge. Your voice and input is vital
before a final determination is madein the new budget for 2015/2016.
There is anger in the communityregarding the affordability of thesemunicipal services. Guidelines clear-ly state a phased-in approach shouldbe considered or simply revert to theoldsystemwheresewerchargeswerebased on value of property.
With the high cost of living, cou-pled with inflation the increases arebeyond one’s ability to pay for theseservices. It is important for iLembe togo back to the drawing board and ex-plore all possible solutions to adheretothecriesofthecommunity.Servicesat all times must be affordable andsustainable.

Automatic parentalcontrol on TVmaddeningWHY is it that most of the movies and excellent serieson DStv (albeit old ones), for instance Sopranos, haveparental control automatically on when it comes toswearing.
I am a big girl and get ticked off when conversations are littered with “bleep” every time someoneopens their mouth, on top of which there is a big “dot”over their mouth so you can’t actually lip read the language. How stupid.

Government must provide alternatives to soften shock of rising electricity tariffs
CONGRESS of the People (Cope) is con-cerned about the impact of the rising costof electricity on already strained house-
hold budgets.Withwinterapproaching,poorpeople inour
country are going to have a dismal time. All ofus, whateveroursituation, aregoing to
have to pay for the shambolic chaos at Eskom.Ourburdenisexacerbatedbythepolitical in-
terferenceof theANCintherunningof thepara-statals.Eachfailureof theZumaadministrationis a further direct cost to every South African.
Thegovernmentmusthelp toameliorate thesituation by vigorously pursuing the extensiveinstallation of solar geysers and not let up as itis doing. All homes should have variousschemesfor installingsolargeysers throughex-tended payment schemes. This is not an optionanylonger. It isarequirement foreconomicsur-vival.
Cope also urges government to adopt anabove-the-waist andbelow-the-waist supply ofelectricitytohomes.Wewishtoseeall lightsandelectronic appliancesusingdirect current, sup-plied through affordable solar panels on roofsand batteries in the house. This is the directionin which the world is going and we cannot beleftbehind.Thisonce-offcost,whichcanbemetby extended payments to meet all circumstan-ces, will allow homes to reduce their electricitycost. This will constitute the “above-the-waist”
supply of electricity. Those who are very poormust receive a basic solar lighting system fromgovernment at a highly subsidised rate or forfree.
Government must do more to dissuadepeople fromusingkeroseneorcandles for light-ingpurposes. Itmust offer incentives forpeopleto adopt a sustainable and better solution - usesolar energy and LED lamps.
Below-the-waist electricity will come from
Eskomas is currently used to power householdappliances such as washing machines, ovensand stoves.
Governmentmust also enable consumers tohave the option of cheaper off-peak rates atnight, as is happening now in Johannesburg sothat affordability for electricity is possible forthose who use electricity at night to do theirwashing, cooking and baking.
If energy efficiency programmes are imple-
mented, households and the economy willbenefit andEskomwill not have to use asmuchdiesel as it is currently doing.
Every little bit will help stressed consumers.Government cannotnowsit backandexpect
people to go on absorbing the rising costs forelectricity seeing that the government has con-tributed its share by poor decision-making andmisguided policies.

SHAKASKRAALisasmall townthathasabus-tling business hub.
Within the community is a large mosque, grocery stores, medical practices, hardwareand clothing stores that service the communi-ty.
Besides the population of about 3 000 thatis allocated to Shakaskraal, there is a largedrainageareathatsurroundsthiscommunity.
People from Glendale, Nkobongo, Shaya-moya, Etete and even people from as far asTongaat and Maphumulo, visit the town totrade.
Residents from Ballito also frequently visitthistown togetmedicalservicesatreasonablerates andwith the samestandardof quality asin any other areas.
Inanutshell, Shakaskraalhasmorepoten-tial for growth, especially if we can capitaliseon the informal traders thatare tradingon theroadside. We have potential for a touristindustry, considering that places like Ballitoare just a few minutes away.
We can even attract tourists that visit RainFarm, etc.
Goodbusiness iswelcomein thecommuni-ty as it will lift the standards of business andtrade in the area.
Personally, I am glad that a KFC franchisehas opened up in the town.
A business like that not only helps boosttrade for the town, but considering the socio-economics of the areas, one person employedmeans that an entire family can besustained.
Soagoodbusiness like that canboost tradeaswellashelpsustainfamilieswhosometimesdepend on a single income to survive.
I believe that Shakaskraal has much moreuntappedpotentialwhenitcomestotradeandbusiness, apotential, which if tappedinto, willbenefit many.

Warriors Sportadvance to final>> Matchwinning performance by dominant team
WEEKLY REPORTER
WARRIORS Sport clawedtheir way from a setdown to edge out Rand-
sons Volleyball Club (2-1) onThursday night and booked theirplace in the finalof theCaminamixServices-sponsored EasterKnockout Cup (hosted by Kwa-Dukuza Volleyball Association).
Randsons were overwhelmingfavourites to advance to the final, but left the courts licking theirwounds after a below-par per-formance.
Randsons took a narrow 10-7lead after a scrappy performanceupfront. The Shakaskraal-based
Warriors outfit took advantage ofthe catalogue of errors from theRandsons rearguard to level thescores at 11-11.
Lennox Dayi restored Rand-sons lead (13-12) with a classicsecond-ball dump that left theWarriors lads dumbstruck.Sandhir “Tinboy” Jugmohan setthe courts ablaze with a thunder-ous bazooka to extend Randsonslead (14-12).
Daniel John kept Warriors inthe hunt for honours with somebrilliant winners from power, togive his side a narrow 17-16 leadfor the first time in the match.Randsons manager, Aslam Ran-deree immediately summoned a
timeout and regained the serveafter a lethargic no-pass bySherwin Adyappa.
Jugmohan and Dayi combinedsuperbly to give Randsons a com-manding 21-17 and despite thelate fight-back by Warriors, or-chestrated by Nolan Govender,Randsonswent on to clinch the set(25-20).
Randsons were caught flat-footedatthestartof thesecondset, trailing 2-7 before taking an earlytimeout. But their woes continuedafter a series of atrocious, way-ward attacking coupledwith a netfault by new signing NashlinMoodley.
Randsons’ “body language”
throughout the second set speltdoom and gloom for Randeree’scharges anddespite the solo effortof Dayi,Warriorswent on to claimthe second set (25-18) to level thescores at 1-1.
Warriors have proved to be aperennial thorn in the flesh of theRandsons outfit in knockout com-petitions in 2014 and the thoughtof making an exit from the EasterKO Cup began to haunt them(Randsons).
Randsons battled to string to-gether three decent passes andfound themselves staring at thebarrelofdefeatafter trailing2-6inthe final set.
Instead of pressing home theadvantage, Warriors pressed the“self-destructmode”button,mak-ing horrendous unforced errorswhich saw their lead vanish intothe dark clouds.
With the scores locked at 6-6,Migeshan Govender scored abeautyfromthecentrefollowedbya“pan-cake” fromDayi to retrievethe ball that gave Randsons a cru-cial8-6 leadat thechangeof sides.
The Warriors trio, Daniels,Govender and Adyappa, matchedtheir more experienced oppo-nents point-for-point andwith thescores lockedat13-13, theatmos-phere was tense.
Adyappa took Warriors tomatch-point (14-13) with a defttouch that caught the Randsonsfront-line flat-footed before Jug-mohan blasted the ball way out ofthecourtstohandvictorytoWarri-ors (15-13) on a golden platter.
In the second semi-final, lead-ing contenders for the player-of-the tournament award, VinnieSinghandCyprinTulsiramguidedGrove End into the final with acomfortable straight-set victory(2-0) against Darnall United.
