Additional Memorial Candles
In response to the numerous requests from parishioners, we are pleased to tell
you that we have installed another set of candles near the stat-ue of the Holy Family in the back (25A side) of the church. This new set of candles offers a top row that can be lit for one year and hold a plaque listing the name of the person for whom the candle is lit. The offering for a Memorial Candle is $250. Please stop by the rectory office during normal business hours when our receptionist will be happy to provide you with additional information.
If your preferred date for a Memorial Mass for your loved one is unavailable, consider a memorial donation of altar bread and wine for the week (either Mon-Sat or Mon-Sun) or, the gift of altar flowers. Women’s Scripture Study group starting up again this fall!
All women are welcome to come to an every other week gathering to study and pray with the Scriptures for the
coming Sunday. This group is open to everyone whether you already spend time with Scripture during the week or not. The
basic history behind the readings is given and then we process the meaning for us in prayer and optional sharing.
This is meant to be a pleasant and congenial space to come and journey with each other through our lectionary!

They bear Pope Francis’s motto from Laudato Si’: “Creation is a gift for all,” along with the name of our parish. You can buy one for $13 (or two for $25) at the office or at the upcoming parish Christmas Fair on December 1—look for the Laudato Si’ table. If we each take a simple step towards protecting the world God has given us and called us to care for, we will make a difference together. Come to the Stable, Two by Two
Advent is a time of preparation for the greatest gift of all … God’s intimate embrace of His creation by en-fleshing Himself in our humanity; a gift of salvific redeeming love.
This great act of downward mobility on God’s part allows humanity the possibility of revealing the divinity of God in our own person and in the other before us. [akin to the Hindu word Namaste: in Hinduism, it means "I bow to the divine in you."]
Last year, we as a parish ‘bowed to the divine’ in the truth of a Haitian family in need of a home. As a result of your generosity, $6,000 was raised, and through Cross Catholic Outreach, a home was built to house a needy family. This year, the Pastoral Staff, reflecting on the aspect of the stable, not as a shelter
(home) but as a gathering place for/of animals, suggested that we sponsor Heifer International’s ‘Gift Ark’ project. This project recalls how Noah, at God’s command, took pairs of all the animals on the earth and placed them in the ark he built before the Great Flood came and destroyed the face of the earth - a sign of God’s love to renew the earth. In that same way, Heifer International, creates an ‘Ark of self-reliance’ for needy families in communities in the US and 25 other countries. This ‘Ark’ allows the possibility of improved life, or, at times life itself, for needy families in much the same way as Noah’s ‘Ark of Faith’.
So, from Ark to Stable, to a gift of Love and Life, we wish to encourage you to help us put such a ‘Gift Ark’ afloat this Advent season, so that when Christmas comes, some of the neediest in our world family will be gifted with joy, hope and well-being!
The ‘Gift Ark’ carries a cargo of:
2-Cows, 2-Sheep, 2-Oxen, 2-Water Buffalo, 2-Pigs, 2-Beehives, 2-Goats, 2-Trios of Ducks, 2-Trios of Rabbits, 2-Trios of Guinea Pigs, 2-Flocks of Geese,2-Flocks of Chickens, 2-Llamas, 2-Schools of Fish & 1-Community Animal Vet kit valued at $5,000.
Beginning on the first weekend of Advent (December 1/2), the bulletin will contain specific details about how we will accomplish this goal as a parish family. As in building the house last year, this effort will be interactive and very much family oriented/friendly, and one which I think you will enjoy.

AN INVITATION TO OUR SECOND ANNUAL
DECEMBER 31ST “GENTLE EVE” ∞∞∞∞∞∞
An old year doesn’t exit quietly, nor does a new year make its entry in silence. Around the world, this holiday we
call New Year’s Eve, this day of making resolu!ons as a blank calendar unfolds before us, announces its presence
with noisy celebra!ons that can include the banging of pots, ligh!ng of fireworks, honking of horns, dancing,
drinking, and watching the ball drop in Times Square.
For many of us, this par!cular celebra!on can be emo!onally challenging, bi#ersweet and not surprisingly,
completely exhaus!ng, especially a$er all the demands of family and friends to enjoy a “perfect” Christmas.
This year, we would like to once again offer an alterna!ve way in which to observe New Year’s Eve and the noise
and pressure that usually accompanies it. Let us gather with one another to celebrate and pray the Mass in
thanksgiving for the year about to end, and offer one another hope for the year about to begin.
Let us share a simple meal together both eucharis!cally and socially; gree!ng each other with “a holy kiss” and
offering a simple toast for peace in the year ahead, allowing us all to safely return to our homes long before the
amateurs take to the roads for their tradi!onal celebra!ons.
Our !me together will begin with Mass at 7 pm, followed by a buffet dinner, conversa!on and dessert, ending
with a final blessing, with the evening drawing to a close by 10pm.
If you are over 18 yrs. of age and interested in taking part in our second annual “Gentle Eve” gathering, please
call the parish office (631.941.4141) and leave your name, address and phone number along with the number of
people a#ending; you may also complete the registra!on form (found on page 8) and return it to the rectory
office at your earliest convenience. We will provide the buffet dinner, soda and sparkling cider along with some
fes!ve decora!ons.
Each a#endee is asked to donate $15 and bring along a favorite dessert to share and invited to bring their own

Ministry to Families with Special Needs
Families who have members with special needs or developmental disabilities often find it difficult to attend weekly Mass
together. We are pleased to provide an opportunity for families to experience and celebrate God’s presence in their lives at a special Mass.
Our last Mass of the Fall 2018 Season will take place on December 15. Be sure to watch this space for the
schedule of Spring Mass dates. The Ministry to Families with Special Needs strives to be inclusive in it’s approach, inviting those with special needs to fill liturgical role such as proclaimer and bringing forward the bread and wine at the offertory procession.
Refreshments and fellowship offered in Smith Hall (church lower level) immediately following Mass.

Although we live in an area that is considered to be “comfortable”, there are many in our midst who do without the daily
necessities. During the upcoming holiday season, please consider helping those less fortunate, through one or more of the following programs organized through our Parish Outreach Office:
¨ It is that time of year again! We are sponsoring the annual Christmas Gift Drive. The tags will be placed on the bulletin boards at all the entrances of the church starting November 10th/11th. Please take a tag and attach it to the outside of the gift. All gifts are to be brought to the sanctuary at the beginning of each mass on the weekend of December 1st and 2nd.
¨ As I am sure all of you know, there are many ways you can give to those in need right here in our own community and the community of Long Island. For instance, with our annual gift drive you will notice tags for St. James Outreach requesting gift cards from Walmart, Target, etc. In this way we are able to assist families not only with gifts that are purchased, as we do for Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, but also with giving them the option to purchase gifts themselves for their own children (we include wrapping paper and tape!) With Stop and Shop gift cards, families can purchase their own Christmas dinner.
¨ We have also been collecting gifts for the children of the Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center (Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church) for many years through our Christmas gift drive. They are always so thankful to all of the support you have always graciously given to this wonderful community located in Wyandanch. Look for the blue tags labeled “Gerald J. Ryan Outreach” when they come out on our bulletin boards.
¨ The Baby Closet has been in full swing for a couple of years now! We receive so many donations of diapers, wipes, etc. throughout the year that not only helps our young families that come to ODB and The Wednesday Pantry, but other parishes in Suffolk County and The Long Island Life Center and Birthright as well! Look for the red tags labeled “The Baby Closet” on the bulletin board.
¨ Every child as well as adult will receive a gift at Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen’s Christmas party thanks to all of you! We will again be collecting for them during our gift drive . Look for the yellow tags marked Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. Thank you in advance!
