“Thanksgiving Day: We Give You Thanks, O Lord!

I guess I have reached that age when the past is becoming more and more part of what I choose to remember when the holidays are being celebrated. Ah yes, that stroll down Memory Lane. This is true for me as this year’s celebration of Thanksgiving Day approaches.

Every Thanksgiving Day in my childhood was celebrated with my maternal grandparents. It wasn’t a long trip to their home. They lived on the third floor of the tenement building where I was raised in New York City. Since we lived on the fourth floor it was simply a matter of climbing down that one flight “. . .to grandmother’s home we go!”

My aunt and two cousins lived on the second floor of that same apartment building so they had to “climb” that one flight of stairs to the third floor. Another aunt and uncle would travel from Brooklyn, then from Staten Island in later years, to join us for this wonderful family gathering. Unfortunately, another aunt and uncle with their three children lived mostly in Michigan so they were never with is physically but always in our hearts when we gathered that day.

I think that most families of Italian heritage served all of the usual “American” dishes of the day. However, no celebration would be complete without its Italian flare. So, before the turkey we enjoyed the typical meatball soup followed by lasagna. Then came the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and glazed sweet potatoes. After all that good eating the assortment of nuts, fruit and Italian pastries were served. Come on cannolis, napoleons and sfogliatella!

While the meal was always superb, the real reason for the gathering was to celebrate FAMILY and the gratitude we had for all that the Lord had given to us. My grandparents, who came from Sicily many years before, were always delighted that their dream had come to true. They left Italy in search of the American Dream. As they looked around the table they knew with certainty that with God’s help they had ARRIVED.

I pray that your Thanksgiving meal will be a wonderful gathering with an equally sumptuous meal. Most of all I pray that as you will look around your table that you will have a similar sense of gratitude for all that God has given to you!

“INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES FOR THANKSGIVING DAY” A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue but the parent of all the others.” -Cicero “Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our Thanksgiving.” -W.T. Purkier “Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in t he hearts of honest men (and women); but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.” -E.P Powell “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” -John F. Kennedy “Thanksgiving is a time to count your blessings, one by one, as each relative goes home.” -Melanie White

“Give thanks!”

What’s happening in

Faith Formation? Our Level 7-8 Confirmation prep students are committed to learning more about their

faith and one way they fulfill these requirements is by doing service. Jesus came to serve

others and our Confirmandi become His hands and feet as they in turn serve our

community. We ask them to find something that interests them and use that to help them

serve others. This could be as simple as helping to coach younger kids in a sport they

already play, or tutor someone. It could be running or participating in a fundraiser or baking

for a bake sale. We also ask them to do something with in the parish so that they can learn

about what we do, they can join our choir or the PB&J gang, become an altar server, or

help at a parish event. The most important part is the fun they have.

Question of the Week? What is my Talent/Gift and how can I

multiply it? There are no Classes Nov. 21st, 22nd or 24th so that our families can

prepare for and enjoy Thanksgiving. Classes will resume on Nov 27th.

Prayer that can be said as Grace for Thanksgiving:

Today we give thanks for our many blessings as we pray for those in need. We give thanks

for our family and friends as we pray for those who are lonely. We give thanks for our free-

doms as we pray for those who are oppressed. We give thanks for our good health as we

pray for those who are ill. We give thanks for our comfort and prosperity as we share our

blessings with others. On this day of Thanksgiving, may the love of God enfold us, the

peace of God dwell within us, and the joy of God uplift us. Amen.

A Very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all from

the Office of Faith Formation.
