Nature3 seasons shape the ways we invest energy, time, and resourcesfor daily living. Sacred seasons likewise shape how we invest energy, time, and resources for our spilitual lives. Advent is the season ofpreparation, of being attentive. We remember Jesus' coming in histoly;we work actively for his coming in our hearts; we eagerly ariticipate hiscoming at the end of time.

Celebrating Advent gives us an opportunityto invite the sacred intoour lives. lt3 a chance to make time, make an agenda, and make spacein our lives for a deepel more intimate relationship with God. ltb notabout piling more daily tasks onto our Chf stmas to-do list. ltt aboutgiving ourselves and others permission to loveGod in a renewed way.

Jyll^Iv f ,u* @* J nEEn frnuOne way to focus attention on the coming of Jesus duringAdvent is to assemb le a J egg" fr"u.Jesse was the father of King David, from whom Jesus wasdescended. The custom comes from a quote from lsaiah:"But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse and fromhis roots, a bud shallblossom"(lsaiah 11:1).

The "tree" is ornamented with symbols representing theevents ofsalvation history and the ancestors ofJesus. You can use an undecorated artificial tree or a largehouseplant or draw a tree on poster board or a large sheetof paper.

With the following scripture readings as your guide, choose a symbol each day to draw yourself, or cut out froma magazine or catalog. You can also use three-dimensionalitems borrowed from your household possessions to hang

ffisAs the newliturgicalyearbegins to unfoldwe are toldbythe prophets

to "take off your robe of mourning and misery" to "shout for joy"

and "be glad and exult." This year especially, Advent reminds us of

God's promise that, with the sending of the Messiah, things change.

This Advent season has the power to speak to each and every one

of us, especially if we present ourselves honestly before God.

It is true that our life situations may not necessarily change during

this Advent. What we are asked to do is to bring our joys and

sorrows, our mourning and elation, into the celebration of the

liturgy week after week, in order that God may work through these

situations to change our hearts.
