WEEKLY HOMILY / HOMILÍA SEMANAL

Second Sunday OT/Segundo Domingo del TO

John saw Jesus coming towards him and said: “This is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Here, John is a witness of Christ. According to the Hebrew tradition, God alone can forgive or take away sins. But why is this word so important for us today? God is making an important call to us today, an invitation to meditate on the events of our lives, to see if we can say as did John the Baptist about Jesus. God is calling us to be witnesses. But we can only be witnesses of something if we have experienced it, if we have touched it, if we had been part, or involved in the action. For instance, if we had seen or been part of an accident, then we could be called to testify about it. Since St. John the Baptist has been a witness of the actions and of the life of Christ and since he saw Jesus passing by, he can give testimony of Jesus to everyone, for he has seen the Holy Spirit coming down upon Him, as it has been revealed by God. For us today, it is a little bit more complicated. It is true that we have received this same spirit in baptism and the command to be an apostles and priests, but how many times have we been witnesses of Christ before our families, friends, co-workers, etc.? We have all received the Holy Spirit, which brings us to Christ and makes us see His actions in our lives. That is why before being a witness; we need to have an experienced for Christ in our lives. In this way we can show him to the others, as St. Paul does in the second reading or today: “Paul, called to be an apostle, witness, of Christ Jesus by the will of God…” Let us all, then, ask the Lord to receive this grace today, to be witnesses of Christ, so that all those put by God around us, may know him and experience the love God has for them. May God bless you and your families and friends always.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We have the wedding at Cana at the heart of today’s liturgy because this story of Jesus’ first miracle of water turned into wine was originally part of the Epiphany feast. Wedding celebrations always require some savvy planning, and a people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. The mother of Jesus has been recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arises, she does what she can to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress! Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebration was held in public view. From this practice came a prayer called the “Nuptial Blessing,” one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. All of this gives married couples good reason to celebrate this day as a mini-anniversary, especially with the clinking of glasses filled with good wine. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
