According to the latest poll, just three months into power Abbott s Liberal government popularity is lagging the opposition Labor Party. People reckon that his honeymoon governance period is over not because of any major issue in fault but just people are not happy with the lack of transparency in his boatpeople handling.

In overall, he is still coping well in his position given that his party is still holding the majority vote in the Senate and public poll is still not too bad on him. But the recent swing in public support is putting pressure on him to improve his dialogue with the public with a view to maintaining his popularity.

I think this indeed illustrates the value of democracy. With a mandate from the people through public voting which allows him to hold the majority control in the Senate, he has a peace of mind to keep governing even as when Australian economy or his public poll comes across a downturn over the next few years. So long as his governance can bring upon some welcoming improvement on people s living over the next few years, he could still win another term. He should be fine if he could pacify the grumblers by softening his rough profile. Even for the ex-PM Julia Gillard who just managed to form a minority government with the support from some independent members, she was able to pass through many Senate policies despite for public opposition simply because a democratically elected government carries the mandate to legitimate its policy plan. Whether it was Gillard s or it is Abbott s government, the government will stay safely to rule throughout the term.

In Hong Kong however Chief Execut ive CY Leung, who was elected through a minority circle, has been facing harsh opposition parties thus resorting to his high profile governance. The problem is his policies, while in implementation, have been subjected to criticisms even from some Chinese officials; this reflects very badly on the principle of one country two systems . The strong opposition from within the Hong Kong society certainly has been making hardship on the policy implementation and causing social disturbance.

Austral ian pol i t ics always gives me an impression of insufficient efficiency without a vision plan. Yet we are delighted to have a democratic system in place which has offered this country and the Australian people a promising foundation and ample room for the government to implement strategic policies.
