Two articles we published in Issue 278 had aroused feedback from our readers. In this same column Campell Newman was addressed as not being a Senator indeed as a reader pointed out member of parliament should be the appropriate title as in Queensland there is only Legislative Assembly but no Senate. I am glad to have the feedback with a view to the betterment of our publication quality. In the same issue there was a report on an interview with Victorian Premier Baillieu where we discussed about the quality standard of ethnic media with our cited examples to illustrate how sub-standard reporting could impact on our professional image in the eyes of the mainstream society.

The sheer volume of Chinese community bodies and their frequent activities have given the media industry much difficulty if every press release was to be verified in details. Many organisations would contract some writers/reporters to produce publicity materials on their activities held; with their writing style and the paid publicity job in mind some of those minor community activities could have been played up not according to the actual state of affairs. While the hosting organisations might be more than happy to accept some readers could have been misled. Under normal circumstances this is no big issue as many readers could make their acute judgement.

However there are occasions where the publication of exaggerated reports on some government or commercial activities could lead to some consequences. Earlier I had received a 3000-word press release where a trading association was reported to have been invited by the State Premier to join an official delegation to China. The press release was not published firstly because it was too long and secondly I was cautious of the content. I thought it was unusual for the government just to single out one organisation for such a purpose and I was wondering whether this organisation was just promoting its intention to participate in an open invitation to join the delegation. Eventually when this press release went public through other press media the disparity as claimed had attracted queries from many other organisations.

These days owing to the migration policy in this country many ethnic media have turned into businesses for business or entreprise migrants and we now have a multifarious state of Chinese community publication media. Yet media has a social responsibility in dealing with the quality and integrity of all publications going to the public.
