In the famous Chinese philosophy writing Great Learning, a chapter

from the Classic of Rites, the correlation between self-cultivation

and social politic has been well deliberated. This applies alike from

the emperor down to the grassroots of the ordinary people, that all

must consider self-cultivation and moral refinement of the person as

the fundamental of everything. The three great Ways of the Great

Learning involves manifesting virtue, loving the people, and abiding by

the utmost good. And the eight means to achieve these great ways

are, in their order: investigate things, extend knowledge, straighten the

thought, rectify the heart, cultivate the persons (to achieve manifesting

virtue); then regulate the families, order well the countries, win high

regard throughout the world (to achieve loving the people); and

ultimately to abiding by the utmost good. Hence, to be a governing

leader, one must work from his own self.

Maybe not everyone could interpret this sort of stylish writing. The

overall teaching is for us to start with exploring our surrounding thus

realising the truth; then we must have a truthful and candid heart;

"cultivate the persons" means to develop our mind and deed in a good

direction. "Regulate the families" includes normalising and harmonising

our family relations. "Order the countries" is to secure obedience of

people under governance and "Win high regard throughout the world"

means earn respect from and command of all nations around.

In nowadays society people care enough about having knowledge

and investigation, but not that much in self-cultivation. Despite

knowledgeable enough, they lack a straight and honest heart to

manifest value; while they cannot regulate their families they attempt to

lead the nations. Needless to say, this sort of leaders can never take

good control of their countries, not to mention commanding the world.

This is such a simple logic which many of us have missed.

In our federal government, Julia Gillard toppled Kevin Rudd to become

the prime minister. Since then she has been under attack and

challenge both from opposition leader Tony Abbott as well as from

colleagues loyal to Kevin Rudd. Maybe in the western culture they

are yet to appreciate and learn from our ancestors in their wisdom

accumulating over the past 5000 years.

The same phenomenon happens in Hong Kong over the past two

weeks regarding Henry Tang the Chief Executive candidate. Following

his confession of his ex-marital affair, his denial of his illegal basement-

built using his wife as scapegoat has made him a man of no integrity

in most public opinions. What a shame to Hong Kong and in the eye

of the people around the world to see someone who cannot refine

himself and cannot regulate his family dare to put up his hand for a

position to govern the country. Yet, in the prevailing election system

confined to a small batch of electorate, he would still be able to get

to the position. Compared to the western culture where the Chinese

culture even does not exist, I am more worried about our Chinese

society where our good heritage and value are indeed unconsciously

shrinking.
